he Adult Education Committee is pleased to
announce our Fall series for 2006. This year's
program, to be presented on four consecutive Mondays
in November, will focus on two timely and thoughtprovoking topics.
WHAT IS GOD?
Using two panels of clergy over
two evenings presenting diverse
points of view from both the
Jewish and non-Jewish worlds,
we'll explore how different traditions explain the concept
of God. How should we view God? How does God playa
role in our everyday lives?

Our new prayer books present numerous opportunities
for our congregation. On November 6 and November 27
Rabbis Lipper and Werber will lead us through an
exploration of the new siddur and discuss ways for
congregant participation in services.
All programs in the Fall series are free and are scheduled
from 7-9 p.m. in the Temple Social Hall.

in the book of Leviticus (23:42-5):

in booths, in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite
people live in booths when I brought
them out of the land of Egypt. I am the
Lord your God."
According to the Talmudic Rabbis, a
sukkah has to have at least three walls
(though the third need not be a complete wall) and a covering.

MICHAEL NEUMANN
he fmal weeks of summer can be traditionally a
slower time at Temple IsraeL However, we
concluded the summer with two significant first time events
that included many of our congregants' involvement. The first
of these landmark activities was our initial Jewish Festival. This
premier event was far beyond our expectations. The outpouring
of Temple volunteers to support this undertaking was fabulous.
The number of people attending this event from the community was also much larger than expected. The e-mails and telephone calls received from temple members as well as people
attending the event were overwhelming. The Fundraising
Committee, under the leadership of Jeannine Marks, was
looking for an event that would bring hundred( s) of Temple
volunteers together and attract hundred( s) of people from the
community to an event they would look forward to each year.
We succeeded in achieving both of our goals. The Jewish Festival has the potential to be an enjoyable annual event, as well a
major fundraiser. Congratulations to all! See you next year!
August. This process took over two years to complete and
involved many focus groups that met with a majority of Temple
members in an attempt to receive as many opinions from as
many congregants concerning our strengths and weaknesses. The
Long Range Plan's mission statement reads: "Temple Israel is ' .
the heart of Reform Jewish Life. Temple Israel is the home for
Reform Jewish worship, Beit T efilah, the home for gathering, ,
Beit Knesset, and a home for study, Beit Midrash." This mission
statement can be found in the four components of the Plan
which are Program, Facility, Finance, and Governance. Every
member of Temple will receive this plan.
The second major activity was the unanimous approval of our
Long Range Plan in a special Board meeting held in late

It has to be at least 4 square cubits in
size, but this does not necessarily mean
that it has to have a square or oblong
shape. A circular sukkah, for instance, is
valid provided it covers an area of at least
4 square cubits (a cubit is approximately
18 inches). The covering must be of
things that grow from the soil (e.g. straw
or leaves of trees), but it must be
detached from the soil, so that it is not
valid to use the leaves of a tree still
growing from the soil as a sukkah
covering. The covering has to have more
shade than light; that is, there must be
more covered than uncovered space. The
covering can be quite thick, although it is
customary to make the covering sufficiently sparse for the stars to be seen
through it. The sukkah has to be outdoors. A sukkah under a roof is not a
valid sukkah, nor is it valid to have a
sukkah underneath, say, the overhang
of a balcony.
For me, Sukkot represents the fragility
of life. I remember my first Sukkot in
Milwaukee when after a very heavy wet
snowfall, the sukkah at the Temple
crumbled into a pile of splintered wood.
This year is shaping up to be a wonderfUl year for Temple.
Our committee leadership remains strong, and we are positioned
to meet the challenges of our congregation and the community
as well. Temple Israel will continue to grow as we reflect on
where we have been and where we would like to go in this
New Year!
Many times in Texas, I had to bolster
my sukkah against the strong winds that
sometimes buffeted the neighborhood.
Each year, as I assemble my sukkah, I
hope and pray that all the pieces fit
together and that the structure remains
upright. With temperatures dropping
and winter's gloom not a great distance
away, our sukkah-dwelling is indeed a
quiet but powerful statement: Weare
secure because our ultimate protection,
as a people if not necessarily as individuals, is assured. It is protection provided us by God. So far, my prayers have
been answered.
Also, a vision of universal brotherhood
is reflected in the sukkah, whose door
and roof are open to all. The sukkah,
in turn, evokes a vision of God's sukkah
as a house of prayer for all nations. In
that future, God will spread a suUat
sbalom--a sheltering cover made of peace
and harmony.
In Akron, there used to be a "Tour of
Sukkot" each year so that we could
see the sukkahs of our neighbors. I
encourage you to take the time with your
children and build a sukkah this year.
Build it for the reasons that I have said,
to remind you of the fragility of life and
to celebrate the openness we want in our
society. Invite some friends over and
raise a glass of wine or juice and celebrate the last moments before the long
winter enters our lives. Most of all,
remember our past and the long journey
upon which we traveL

Sisterhood had a successful "Meet
and Greet" for the flIst day of
Religious School. Women who
signed up for membership for the
new year were given a free mum
plant. Sisterhood also gave out 4
raffle prizes, just for stopping by
the table. The winners were

Abigail Edgell and Sue Pollak. Pictured above are Beth

the Sisterhood greeters for the morning.
On September 17, Sisterhood's flIst program, "Blessings,
Bagels, and Bunco" was attended by a nice group of women
who had an enjoyable morning getting to know each other
while eating and playing bunco. A short program on the
"Miracles of Marbles" was presented. Here is a short synopsis
of that program:
Marbles are created using bits oj old glass no longer serviceable in its
original form. Each marble is unique, special, and
-~~. beautiful. Wben looking at a marble, think oj the
different swirls and colors as ((blessings" that you
have shared with other people in your life. We as
women are caregivers whether as daughters, wives,
lovers, mothers,friends, or volunteers. Think about the miracle and the
blessing oj care giving, of being either the person who gives care or the
person who receives the care. Both parties, in essence, share the same
blessing. Think oj the many miracles and blessings a larger caring
community shares. Wben you look at this marble,focus on the blessings
ojyour life. Recognize the many blessings you have shared with others,
and others with you.

MEET OUR HEBREW TEACHERS
Computer Center jYouth Lounge: Weare very
excited to open the Computer Center and Youth
Lounge this year. This Lounge will provide a space
for our students to hang out, do homework, use
the computer, do class work and class projects. In
. ....~5 addition, classes will use this Lounge for video
presentations and special projects. It is thrilling to be able to
provide computer access for all of our students. Our faculty
will also use the computer for lesson planning. B' nai Mitzvah
students can use special software to practice their chanting.
Students will use the latest software to help them learn Hebrew.
It is imperative that each family read and review the rules.
Students and parents must sign the agreement form. A special
thank you to Lenny Winer and Farrel Helfer for all the hours
of hard work they have put into making this a safe learning tool
for our students.
Dress Code: Please remember that Temple Israel Religious
School has a dress code. It can be reviewed in the Parent Handbook. On Sundays, children should dress appropriately for
entering the Sanctuary and participating in class activities. This
means no jeans, no sweatpants/sweat suits, no mini skirts or
tank tops. Also, no t-shirts with objectionable sayings. Each
child sets an example for the next. Dressing nicely for Sunday
School shows respect as we come together to pray and learn.
During mid-week, students can come in clothes that they would
wear to their public or private schooL
Learning Covenant: Please review the Learning Covenant with
your child. This Covenant outlines the responsibilities of
students, parents and faculty of Temple IsraeL Everyone is
responsible for its goals, principles and consequences. Everyone
involved with the school has duties and rights outlined in this
Covenant and should fully understand the consequences for
disruptive behavior at Temple. Our teachers will be referring to
it throughout the year.

I would like to welcome you and your children to our combined
Hebrew 3 rd and 4th grade class.
First let me introduce myself. My name is Mina Ronen, and I
have been teaching Hebrew for quite a few years. I started to
teach Hebrew at Temple Israel under Cantor Gedaliah Gertz,
after which I taught at Beth EI and Lippman. Now I am full
circle back at Temple.
STACY I. SHULAN
I am returning to Temple Israel as a 2 nd year teacher, teaching
6'h grade. I worked with this same group of students last year
and enjoyed my experience. I am also an intervention specialist
(special education teacher) at Fairlawn Elementary School in
Akron. I enjoy using a variety of strategies to reach my students
and plan to apply some of these SalTIe strategies to my students
at Temple IsraeL In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with
my husband John and two pugs, Lucy and Sweet Pea.
Another Successful
Day of Betman Camp
For the first day of Sunday School,
the seven groups comprised of
students in all of the grades rotated
to different rooms to play Jeopardy, Hebrew Bingo, Hebrew
Concentration and Hebrew Twister. They sang Israeli songs,
decorated book bags and jumped into Israeli dancing. Snacks,
provided by Sisterhood, enhanced the day.

Do You Like College
Basketball?
Thanks to Our Ushers
Brotherhood's ushers work hard all year
long for Temple Israel. We see them at
the Sanctuary doors at every Shabbat
Service. During the High Holy Days we
count on them to assist with prayer
books and with seating. At the recent
Jewish Festival, they were stationed all
around the building helping with inside
traffic control. To properly thank them
for their dedication to Temple Israel,
there will be an Usher Appreciation
Brunch on Sunday, October IS at
11:00 a.m. at Rosemont Country Club.
Annual Interfaith Dinner
This year it is Temple Israel's tum to
host the folks from St. Paul's Episcopal
Church at the Annuallnterfaith Dinner .
It will be held Thursday, November 9 at
6:00 p.m. All are invited to attend at a

More than 3000 people came to Temple Israel on August 27 to participate in
the Jewish Festival! The Jewish foods brought in the crowds: Matzah Ball
Soup, Latkes, Stuffed Cabbage, Bagel & Lox, Mandel Bread, Challah and
Rugelach. Popular activities included learning from the Rabbis, watching
demonstrations on making challah and gefJte fish, hearing Jewish music.
Artisans displayed their wares, and there were numerous activities for kids.
