HILLSBOROUGH SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
35 YEARS OF GIVING
Presidents’ and Executive Director’s Message
Dear Fellow Hillsborough Schools Supporters:
Thirty-five years ago a small group of forward-thinking parents and community
members responded to the budget reductions Proposition 13 created by raising
$200,000 for our schools. This fundraising effort was the beginning of a unique
private-public partnership. Thanks to the efforts of our founders in 1980 and to
the leaders and donors who followed in their footsteps, the Hillsborough Schools
Foundation (HSF) has allocated over $50 million dollars to help close the gap
between shrinking government funding and the high quality education that we in
Hillsborough have come to expect for our children.
Left to right: Leslie Ragsdale, President, 2015-2016
Laurel Miranda, President, 2014-2015
Cynthia Foster, Executive Director
The 2014-2015 school year has been tremendous for our district, our schools and the
Foundation. We have carried on the HSF tradition of collecting the essential dollars
that have become a reliable cornerstone – currently 15% – of the school district’s
operating budget.
A greater investment in education has significantly raised property values in our town,
which in turn generates more funding for our schools. The impact of these additional
funds for our children is real:
• Our district continues to be ranked among the top
serving a record number of students – 1,546.

86
•O
ur 4 schools combined have received
awards, including 7 National Blue
Ribbon Awards, 26 California Distinguished Schools Awards, 29 Kent Awards
for Innovative Programs, as well as California’s Gold Ribbon Award presented to
Crocker Middle School this year for its signature practices.
It is exciting to be part of a school district with a 35 year tradition of giving back to the
community while paying it forward. Our children benefit, as does the next generation.
We thank you for being a part of this culture of giving and ask you to renew your
support to help us reach our goal of 100% community participation in our Annual
Giving Campaign.

35 YEARS OF GIVING
BUILDING THE FOUNDATION
Your gift has a powerful impact. The funds raised through the Hillsborough Schools
Foundation support the Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education:
“
The power of a positive
education lasts a lifetime. We chose
Hillsborough because of the passion
for education among the parents,
students, and teachers. It is one of the
best decisions we’ve ever made.
”

success in high school and beyond.
l Differentiated learning allows children to develop at their own pace through
key stages of math curriculum, with opportunities for math enrichment in
elementary school and accelerated math trajectories in middle school
l Reading specialists work with elementary students individually or in small
groups
l Content-rich libraries with a dedicated librarian at each school foster the joy
of discovery through reading and support classroom teachers with a wonderful

CIENCE In the Innovation Labs (iLabs) at each elementary school, specialists
encourage students to collaborate and solve design problems; in middle school,
students have the opportunity to further develop their understanding of science
concepts by competing in three standards-based STEM competitions – Science
Olympiad, the Tech Museum’s Tech Challenge, and Math Club
l MUSIC Choral Music builds confidence and performance skills; Instrumental
Music gives students the opportunity to read music and master an instrument
while performing with peers, culminating in an annual Symphonic Band
concert at Disneyland
l WORLD LANGUAGE With Spanish and world cultures introduced in
elementary school and Spanish and Mandarin taught in middle school,
Hillsborough students are poised for success in our increasingly
interconnected world
l MEDIA Hillsborough Educational Television (HTV) provides the opportunity
for students from all schools to create TV programming for the Hillsborough
schools and broader community; in middle school, students produce live daily
lunchtime radio shows and newscasts in a state-of-the-art television studio
l EXPLORATION Teacher-led trips, from Yosemite to Washington, D.C.,
extend and deepen learning, helping students appreciate our environment,
history and government
Student Council, South School

LEGACY OF GIVING BACK
AND PAYING IT FORWARD
Maintaining our school district’s Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education requires
your continued participation to reach our private funding goals each year.

We invite you to renew your annual support on or before Pledge Day, October 28th,
2015 through one of the following giving options:
l Make a pledge or tax-deductible donation by:
•single payment
•installment plan
•use enclosed envelope

and heartfelt contribution.
HSF Pledge Day, West School
l Consider a planned gift. Ask your attorney to include HSF in your
Estate Plan.
“
Because of HSF, our middle
school students each have a
Chromebook. This enabled us to
complete state-mandated testing in
days instead of weeks.
”
Modell Marlow Andersen, Director of Educational
Services, Hillsborough City School District
4
l Contribute to Fund-A-Need in the Spring. Donations in the 2014 - 2015
school year directly supported Traffic and Safety enhancements at each
school site and at the District Office.
Donate by May 1st, 2016 to be recognized in our next Annual Report.
Play Ball!
To encourage 100% participation in
HSF’s Annual Giving Campaign, we rolled
out a new incentive program. When school
families reached 60% participation districtwide last March, all four schools received
lime green playground balls as a thank
you gift! Then as each school reached new
participation milestones, teachers and
students were overjoyed to receive new
basketballs, soccer balls and footballs. Many
thanks to our district families for keeping the
ball rolling all year long!!!

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our donors! The HSF
donor list recognizes individuals and businesses
who donated to our 2014 – 2015 campaign as of
June 30, 2015. We have made every effort to list each
name correctly, and we apologize for any errors or
omissions. Please email [email protected] or call the
HSF office at 650-344-6685 with any questions or
corrections. Again, we extend our sincere gratitude
to all our donors for their continued support of
excellence in public education.

A COMMUNITY HONORING TRADITION
Hillsborough – small town, big heart
Hillsborough is a small town of only 3,700 households; we do not have a business district, or even sidewalks. But what our town
does have is residents with high standards and big hearts. Grandparents, parents and neighbors show their support for our awardwinning public schools all year long. This is a tradition that spans generations. Our community is committed to paying it forward
and ensuring that future Hillsborough generations receive an excellent education.
The Associated Parents’ Group (APG) of Hillsborough
Schools honors individuals who have made significant
contributions to our community and to the lives of
our children. Congratulations to the 2015 winners:
Community Care Award, Ron Frankel (left) and Citizen
of the Year, Lilli Rey (right).
The Lester Chun Band Room was unveiled at a
community event recognizing and honoring the
remarkable contributions of former Band Director
Lester Chun. Upon his retirement, we welcomed
Tana Barnett as Crocker Middle School’s Concert
and Symphonic Band Director.
The Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance, the longest running
Classic Car Show in the world, celebrated its 60th year
this past summer. Bringing our community together, the
Hillsborough Concours delights and wows grandparents
and children alike, while continuing its long-standing
tradition of benefiting our award-winning public schools.
“
The Citizen of the Year and
Community Care Award celebration
showcases Hillsborough’s
passionate commitment to
volunteerism and the exceptional
education of our children.
”
Congresswoman Jackie Speier
The Dick Villa Turkey Trot tradition is alive and well at Crocker Middle School! Over 70 Crocker graduates,
spanning more than 30 years, participated in the First Annual Alumni Race.

YOUR 2014–2015 Celebrating HSF
“
The Hillsborough Schools Foundation has a tradition of enhancing the educational program of our community
whether it’s science, technology, math or the arts. It also enhances our schools’ ability to develop future leaders.

HAVING FUN WHILE DOING GOOD
Because of you, we achieved record attendance at this year’s Hillsborough Schools Foundation events. Whether
it was on the tennis court, at a sit-down luncheon and fashion show, on the dance floor, or at the starting line, your
participation and support made a difference and we thank you!

“
I volunteer because I genuinely care and am passionate about the community. When my kids
acknowledge and appreciate the time and effort I put in, it is the best feeling in the world!

HILLSBOROUGH SCHOOLS
FOUNDATION
2015 - 2016
A LOT HAS CHANGED IN THE PAST 35 YEARS…
But Today’s Students Need Your Consistent and Continued Support More Than Ever!
“
In the 1980’s, our children’s
grandparents were very involved in the
newly formed Hillsborough Schools
Foundation. So when our sons started
school, it was natural for us to support
HSF. It’s the best way we’ve found
to ensure that the next generation
continues to receive an amazing
education.
