from the principal
Dear Parents,
this issue
November is the last month of Ordinary Time. It begins with a double feast in remembrance
of those who have died. The feast of All Saints is celebrated on November 1. On that day
we celebrate all the known and unknown saints and martyrs of the Christian faith. Many
members of our own families have died and are now with God. We prayed for them on
November 2, All Souls Day. On both of these days we use Prayer to remind us of all who
have lived as faithful Christians. Our Christian faith tells us that one day, we will all be
reunited with God in heaven, because we share in the resurrection of Jesus. All through the
month, we offer prayers to remember the dead and to thank God for their lives.

Dear Parents,
Our HSC students have finished their examinations and we certainly hope that they have put in the effort needed to ensure
that they achieve the marks they deserve. We as a College are preparing for Year 9 and 10 exams beginning this Friday 8
November and our Year 7 and 8 students will begin on the Monday 18 November. All students have been issued with an
examination timetable and study guides, this will assist in the planning and preparation for this time of the year.
Last Friday, 1st November, our 2014 College Prefects spent the day in a Leadership Forum coordinated by Miss Michaela
Launerts and Ms Julie Hearn. The day started with a breakfast followed by Mass with St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and
then a day of discussion and discernment. Many thanks to these young men for their engagement with the day; their
articulation of thoughts and ideas showed a level of maturity beyond a standard high school student.
Next week our senior students head off on Retreat for three days led by Ms Julie Hearn and the Year 11 team. Retreats are
a time of reflection and a change to have an honest conversation with oneself. As a Catholic school this time is valuable in
ensuring that our young men understand what it means to be a member of a catholic community and how their lives maybe
enriched by the motto of the College - PRIMA PRIMUM – First Things First – and it is a challenge to all to properly arrange
life's priorities.
Our seniors are indeed busy at the moment. They have all received a copy of their assessment handbook, which outlines
the rules and guidelines and dates for assessment tasks. These handbooks should be used for planning ahead so that
assessments are finished on time and are completed to the best of their ability.
Recently there has been discussion at the College in regards to Interstate and Overseas tours. As a College it has been
determined that we will endeavour to hold one Social Justice Tour and one Cultural and/or Sporting Tour each year. In 2014
we are holding a Social Justice tour to Cambodia and a Cultural tour to the USA. In 2015 we are investigating to the
possibility of a Social Justice tour of Indigenous Australia and a sporting and cultural tour to the United Kingdom and Franc e.
Details about the 2015 tours will be available toward the middle of next year.

St Paul’s Uniform
In 2014 there will be some slight variations to our uniform policy;



Year 7 to Year 10 students will be required to wear long navy trousers during Term 2 and Term 3 as part of the winter
uniform.
Students will have a choice of socks to wear with the college uniform throughout the year. School crew socks will be
introduced, however, students may continue to wear their normal long grey socks. Both are accepted as part of the
college uniform.
The original red and black spray jacket is not to be worn.. The black College jacket introduced in 2013 replaces the
spray jacket.
If any of the above needs clarifying please contact Mr Mark Baker, Principal.
The new College uniform, order form and special Pickles opening times for St Paul’s College from now until Christmas can be
found here.
Obsolete College Jacket
As the St Paul’s red & black College spray jacket becomes obsolete at the end of 2013, we are suggesting that parents
donate their son’s old spray jacket to the College where we will be giving them to charity (hopefully overseas). If you would
like to buy or sell any current College uniform items please look at http://www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au.

St Vincent de Paul Bushfire Appeal
On behalf of the College we would like to thank the many generous
students and staff who supported the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal over the
last few weeks. The school raised $2000 to help families in need and Mr
Brian Gregan accepted the cheque on behalf of the St Vincent de Paul
Society. Although the weather conditions have eased, for many who
have lost everything, the process to rebuild their lives can take years.
We Remember Liturgy
The month of November is traditionally associated in the Catholic
Church with remembrance of the dead. Throughout this week’s classes
we remembered lost loved ones and friends in a ‘We Remember Liturgy’
held in the Edmund Rice Cottage. Our students remembered cherished
family and friends, offering up prayers and reflections for each one.
Australian Catholic Youth Festival Pilgrims
Over the next few weeks selected students from Year 9 and 10 will be participating in prayer and formation in the lead up to
the inaugural Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Melbourne. Please keep the following students in your prayers: Tom
Barcham, Ben Ford, Aidan Biasi, Curtis Wright, Julian Jansz, Ivica Covic, Tom Walmsley, Lucas Charley and Liam Hilton-Butt
as they represent our College and journey along with 180 students from across the Broken Bay Diocese.

Fundraising for the Social Justice Immersion Tour 2014
Last week students raised $600 for the Social Justice Tour to Cambodia. This can buy almost half a house! Thank you to
Ben Ford and Aidan Biasi for running the canteen on the evening. You can change the way a family lives by joining the
Social justice tour of 2014. Deposits are currently being received for the Social Justice Immersion Tour of Cambodia 2014.
The tour will be our fourth tour to Cambodia for Year 11 and 12 students. The all-inclusive cost of the tour will be
approximately $2600 and each student is required to raise $1500 for the house they will build. Please note that a minimum
of 12 students are required to make the tour viable in 2014. It is not too late to join the tour. Could you please register your

Catechesis classes at Harbord Public School
This week Year 11 boys Justin Press, Harrison Wright and Thomas Frisina assisted the
Catechist at Harbord Public School in furthering the their spiritual development. The students
were preparing for their upcoming play recounting the birth of Jesus Christ; they were supported
in rehearsal and the planning of the stage backdrops as the lesson progressed. Our boys return
to Harbord Public School in two weeks to continue working with the children and their play.

study skills news
November Tip - How do you study for a test or exam?
A common form of assessment in secondary school is a test or examination. Unfortunately many students don’t really know
how to study properly for a test. They just read their notes over and over and hope that the content will stay in their head.
This is the slowest and most ineffective way of studying. Some students manage to get through on natural ability for a
while, but in the end it is necessary to learn how to study effectively so students can achieve their personal best in an as
efficient manner as possible.
So here is the short version of how you study for a test:
Make study notes
Learn the notes by testing yourself on them
Do lots of questions as practice
To read the full version of ‘How to study for a test in High School’ click here. In light of the upcoming exams and recent
study preparation sessions, we advise parents and students to visit this website using our College subscription details
below to discover more in-depth study tips.

Author Visit: Will Kostakis
Last term, all of Year 11 had the opportunity to listen to popular Australian author deliver a workshop on the creative writing
process. Having just had his second novel, The First Third, published to universally positive reviews, at only 23, Will was well
placed to speak to our boys about writing. Over the course of an hour, he spoke about where he gets his ideas and what to
do in the creative writing section of the English Higher School Certificate examination. This was great for our boys to hear as
not only did he reiterate a lot of the advice Year 11 students currently receive from their English teachers but he also help ed
the boys to consider how they could turn their own life experiences into suitable material for stories.
After a very entertaining and informative hour with Year 11, Will then spoke to one Year 8 English class 8Y and with this
smaller group of students spoke to them about how to write engaging short stories, and how much fun creative writing can
be.
I first heard Will speak at an English Teachers’ Conference a number of years ago. At that time, he had just been awarded
the Sydney Morning Herald’s Young Writer of the Year after writing a short story about a teenager’s romantic attempts to woo
using social media. After entering the story on the advice of his English teacher, he won the state-wide competition and
shortly thereafter published his first novel. When asked how he was able to write such a clever and engaging story, his
response was lots of practice!

in the media
A few weeks ago, a group of our Year 10 and Year 11 boys swapped the classroom for a confronting tour of Royal North
Shore Hospital to see first hand the shocking reality of what happens if they drink, take drugs or text while driving.
The P.A.R.T.Y (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) program aims to cut the number of young lives needlessly
lost to reckless and risky behaviour. In the past five years, 1638 young people aged between 15 and 25 were killed on NSW
roads without ever making it to hospital.
Our students were the first in the State to take part in the one-day course and witnessed the stark and painful reality of the
emergency, intensive care, burns, spinal, neurosurgical and rehabilitation wards. They also met with accident survivors who
were left paralysed and wheelchair bound after making the wrong decision by hoping in a car.
All of the students agreed the program was confronting and a must for every student of driving age. “Nothing was sugar
coated that’s for sure” said College Captain, Connor Barham.
RNSH Head of Trauma Dr Tony Joseph said it was hoped every senior NSW student will have the opportunity to take part in
this program.

Now that Joshua has finished all studies I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everybody at St Pauls.
As everybody knows it is a very hard decision where to send your son to high school.
I gave Josh the choice and he and I chose St Pauls.
Josh has enjoyed and grown into a very likable engaging man. This does not come with the parents alone as the time spent
at school over the 6 years is huge.
I would like to thank all the teachers and office staff who had my numerous calls on a monthly basis.
In the earlier years Josh has grown and learnt how to behave and respect everybody thanks to the schools teachings.
The last 2 years of study has been intense but thankfully help is always there for him in his studies.
Thanks to all the teachers for preparing him for the HSC as he believes that he was well prepared for the exams.
We will be highly recommending the school to anybody with boys for future education.

Volleyball
Our St Paul’s Catholic College volley ball team took part in the BBSSSA volleyball competition down at manly beach last
Tuesday. This was our second year competing in this competition and our students did themselves proud.
We played five games and ended up winning three out of the five, which placed us in third position. St Edwards College East
Gosford ended up winning the day.
A great day had by all and was very well organised by Fiona Stuart, Sports Coordinator.

Year 8 Rugby Union
At the end of term 3, St Paul’s Under 14’s rugby union team contested the final of the Peninsula Cup Rugby Union
competition at Pittwater Rugby Park. Having finished the regular season undefeated, St Pauls entered the final full of
confidence. However, to their credit, Barrenjoey High School out enthused St Paul’s and managed to secure a 35-19 victory.
Lead by captain James Roach, during the season St Pauls were the form team of the competition. Game 2 against eventual
premiers Barrenjoey was our closest game of the season, winning 20-12. During the season St Pauls accounted for Masada,
Oxford Falls Grammar, Mater Maria and NBCS, only to meet Mater in the semi final at Warriewood. For the first 15 minutes,
Mater Maria threw all they had at the St Paul’s team, only to finish the first half 15-0 behind. The second half was not as
close, with St Paul’s racing away to a 42-0 lead. Mater Maria fought hard late in the second half to bring the score closer than
it may have been.
After the Year 7 team won their final in the preceding game, the under 14’s were full of confidence starting the final.
Unfortunately, so were Barrenjoey, who skipped away to a 19-0 lead in quick time. Down 19-10 at half time saw St Paul’s still
in the game, with the next points scorer likely to win. After defending our line for 10 minutes, Barrenjoey managed to score
the first try of the second half, creating an insurmountable lead.
Congratulations to all players on the way they represented the College this season. In the forwards, Oli Brown, Max Nyssen
and James Roach were excellent all season. Well done also to Tyson Holmes at fullback who was the leading point scorer for
the under 14’s this season.

BBSSSA Tennis Competition
On Tuesday October 22nd St Paul’s Tennis team participated in the BBSSSA Tennis Competition at the Australian Tennis
Academy. The Under 13’s team was captained by Oliver Davies, with Josh Wheen and Lachlan Brinkman supporting. The
boys had an impressive debut in the tournament, beating St Leo’s in the semi-finals to qualify for the Grand Final. After
winning the first set, the boys were unable to keep their lead, and lost the following two sets to St Edwards and finished the
tournament in 2nd place. Great effort boys! The Under 15’s team was captained by Brendan Vestergaard and supported by
Jesse Ball and Jesse Welsh with Archie Smith in reserve. The boys played some terrific sets, and ended their day in a 1-2
semi-final match against St Leo’s. The St Paul’s Opens Team was captained by Year 8 student Ben O’Connell, and supported by Ben Murace and Josh Cotton. Facing much older boys in the tournament did not intimate our young team, as they
breezed through the qualifying matches, winning each game. The Grand Final against St Edwards was a nail biter. Ben
O’Connell and Ben Murace won the first set, but again were unable to hold on to their lead. The boys lost the final two sets
and placed 2nd overall. Next year they will be looking to win it all!

14.6km surf ski paddle, a 2.1km run, a 2.5km Swim, another 962m run, a
6.1km board paddle and finishing with a 7.1km run in a time of 3 hours 34 min

Senpai Kohai Cup winners!
This week marked the 10th year of the Senpai Kohai Cup, our school’s Japanese Interview speech Contest. Year 9 students
are paired up with Year 11 students of Japanese who coach the boys for the contest. On the day, it was an extremely tight
result with the teachers having to turn to the video reply to make a final decision.
The winners overall were :
1st : Ivica Covic coached by Coleton Annett
2nd : Cooper Snel coached by Ben McVean
3rd : Dante Simonetta coached by Tom Newcombe.
A special commendation goes to Euan MCDonald, Theo Guichon and Ty Zochling though who also put in stand out
performances on the day. The high level of the boys on the day bodes well for our school as we head into the Manly Council
Tokimeki Speech Contest next year. Well done year 9!
Thanks to Mrs Kibby who made a guest appearance as a judge on the day. She will be returning from maternity leave at the
beginning of next year and I am sure the boys will welcome her back into their classes. Thanks also to Miss Lee who has
done a fantastic job running the practice sessions at recess and organising the event on the day.
Year 10 & 11 Talk with Mitch Garth
Year 10 and 11 enjoyed a visit from former school captain and dux, Mitch Garth who spoke to the boys about his experience
of learning Japanese and studying law and finance at university. Mitch was inspiring as he talked of meeting with heads of
corporations such as banks, Facebook and twitter due to his knowledge of Japanese and experience in Japanese culture.
His advice was for all boys to try to look towards the future and how they plan to stand out against thousands of other
applicants who all have the same degrees. It is great to see not only how successful Mitch has been in his studies and
career so far, but also how generous he still is with his time to help boys at his old school.
Japan Tour
The boys in Year 10 and 11 who plan on attending the Japanese Tour to Japan in January 2015, please ensure you have

Year 12 Food Technology
On Thursday 31st October, Year 12 Food Technology students took a trip out to Leppington Pastoral Company (LPC),
which is a dairy farm on the Northern Road Bringelly. This large dairy farm operates 24 / 7 and milks 2000 head of cattle
three times a day. LPC produces A2 milk to large Sydney milk manufacturers as well as boutique cheese makers.
The boys are currently studying the various sectors of the Australian Food Industry. This excursion covered the Agricultural
Sector of the Australian Food Industry and formed the basis of their first HSC Assessment Task. They thoroughly enjoyed
watching the automated milking process from the factory floor, watching baby calves only minutes old, trying to get to their
feet and patting the older calves in the nursery.

To benefit research for Friedreich’s Ataxia
Fifteen year old, Jai Maurice currently studying at St Paul’s in Manly is one of the of the 30,000 Australian’s who have
Friedreich Ataxia, a genetic neurological degenerative condition that gradually affects a person’s coordination, mobility,
speech and heart function.
Generally the symptoms are gradual and progressive and usually start around about the age of 12. Jai’s mother, Kaija said,
“It was as if my son had two left feet. Just walking around the house was like an obstacle course for Jai, 13. When he was
younger we’d laughed it off as clumsiness”.
But now as he reached his teenage years, it seemed to be getting worse. Jai also had a heart condition,
hypotrophiccardiomyopathy, that he was diagnosed with at age seven. It meant he couldn’t be as active as other kids his
age in case he overexerted his heart.
Jai has since discovered there’s no cure for Friedreich’s ataxia or even a treatment and he’s dedicated himself to trying to
help other kids like him.
Proceeds from the third annual summer sessions shopping party will benefit the research to find a cure for this rare
disease.

FA (Friedreich’s Ataxia) is a degenerative, genetic, neurological disease that appears predominantly in children and
teenagers, usually first diagnosed between the ages of 5 and 15. FA causes difficulty walking, talking and performing
everyday functions, soon leaving sufferers wheelchair bound.
FA is a progressive condition and in time causes weakening of the limbs and in turn complete incapacitation. It does not
affect intellectual capacity. It’s associated with vision, hearing and speech failure, combined with severe heart disease,
scoliosis and diabetes.
