‘Together We Journey with God.’
SUNDAY
This Sunday the Church will celebrate the solemnity of The Holy Trinity. This Sunday especially
emphasises that there are three different aspects of our one God- the Father, the Son and the
Holy Spirit. Over the last few Sundays the Easter season reached its conclusion with the
celebrations of The Ascension and Pentecost Sunday. Over the next few Sundays the Church
celebrates a series of important solemnities. A solemnity in the Church is a very important or
dignified event. After these important Sundays the Church season reverts back to Ordinary Time
where the priest wears green robes and the banners hanging in the Church will be green.

Fr Dan has been on a short holiday and resumed work in the parish on Tuesday. Welcome back

THOSE WHO ARE SICK
We continue to ask you to pray for people who are sick or who need the help we provide with
our prayers. One of the things Catholics have always done is to pray for the sick in the
community. Many are people we don’t know but we pray that they will be comforted and made
well.
DROP OFF TIMES
We have had some children dropped off exceedingly early over the last few days. One student
was sitting at school when the first staff member arrived at school. This is not safe. Many people
that we do not know cut through our school grounds first thing in the morning on their way to
buses and trains. Please think safe and do not drop your child or children off unaccompanied
before 8:10 am. Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) is open every morning from 6:30 am for
students who need to be dropped off early by their parents.
LEARN 2 LEARN
Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown is holding an ‘Earn 2 Learn’ campaign. This campaign continues
until Friday 19 June. If you shop at Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown you may like to collect the
dockets from the participating retailers and drop them into the collection boxes outside
Woolworths and Coles. Each week a school could win an iPad and the school that ends with the
highest total of points (averaged to make it fair for smaller schools) on 19 June wins $4000 cash.
THANK YOU
Yesterday we held Maroon or Blue Day to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.
$600.00 was raised and will be presented to the St Vincent de Paul Society shortly.
CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS SUPERHERO DAY
Each year we hold a Cancer Council Fundraising event. This year we have decided to hold
‘Captain Courageous Day’. This is a day to help raise funds for Bone Marrow Transplant
research. This area receives almost no government funding. This will be held on Friday 5 June
and students can come to school on that day dressed as a Super Hero. We would like them to
bring in a Gold Coin donation on that day and this money would go to support the Bone Marrow
Transplant Foundation.
PUBLIC HOLIDAY - QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY
Monday 8 June is the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday. The school will be closed on this day. It
will reopen on Tuesday 9 June at 8:30 am.
UPDATE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS
At times students can become quite ill very suddenly at school and it becomes very important to be able to contact their
parents quickly. Recently we have several parents that have been very hard to contact when their child has been sick at
school as they have changed phone numbers but have not informed us of those new numbers. If you have changed your
phone number; email address or home address it is very important that you inform the school.

As previously advertised Qkr is an easy to use mobile app for iPhones and Android smartphones that will
make ordering and payment for tuckshop a breeze. It is a cashless system supported by Mastercard,
Commonwealth Bank and the school’s bank Archdiocesan Development Fund.
We have run a pilot with a number of families and the system is working well. The information to set up Qkr
is now available to all families this can be obtained from the office or on the school app.

Remember …
All parents helping out in the school are required to sign in and out at the office and wear a “PARENT HELPER BADGE”.
All grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. MUST have a Blue Card (from the Commission for Children and Young People and
Child Guardian. Forms can be obtained from the school office). All volunteer / parent helpers MUST have completed
the Student Protection Workshop on the school website and submitted the forms to the office.

SCHOOL SPORT
Term 2 is always a very busy time for school sport. Our Cross Country team is participating in Catholic Zone competition
today at St Bernadine’s Regents Park. A big thanks to Mrs Dempsey for all the training and expertise coaching she has
provided the team with. We wish them all the best!
Good luck to the girls participating in the QC Cup netball competition on Monday. Thanks to Miss Dale and Mrs
Dempsey for preparing the children for this competition.
TECHNOLOGY
Teachers and students are reporting that the increased access to technology has been a very worthwhile project.
Access to technology such as interactive whiteboards, laptop computers, iPads and Apple TV allow our staff to plan and

implement 21 century learning opportunities for your children. The dramatic increase in technology would not have
been possible without the support of the Parents and Friends Association.
RESILIENCE
Below is some basic information about resilience. Resilience is something that is talked about in all school communities.
I will be regularly writing about social and emotional development and resilience is a great place to start.
What is resilience?
Resilience is the ability to ‘bounce back’ after a tough situation or difficult time and then get back to feeling just about
as good as you felt before. It’s also the ability to adapt to difficult circumstances that you can’t change, and keep on
thriving.
When you’re resilient, you can learn from difficult or challenging situations and get stronger.

LONE PINE (by Scarlett Mercado 1Blue)
At Lone Pine we saw animals. I liked the koalas best because they have fur. I liked
feeding the kangaroos. At first I was scared and then I wasn't. I liked Lone
Pine because we saw animals.
LONE PINE EXCURSION (by 1Red)
On Friday 15 May we went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to look
at all the Australian animals. First we fed the kangaroos. Next we
walked around and got to see animals like koalas, platypus, a
cassowary and Tasmanian devils. Then we had a special lesson about the
animals and we got to pat a koala, snake and hold chickens. We had the
best day.

On Friday we went on an excursion to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. First I
had some lunch and the bush turkeys were trying to eat my lunch. Next
we fed the kangaroos, then I saw the wombats. My favourite thing on
the excursion was seeing the show.

TRINITY SUNDAY
Trinity Sunday is celebrated a week after Pentecost Sunday in honour of the most fundamental of
Christian beliefs—belief in the Holy Trinity. We can never fully understand the mystery of the
Trinity, but we can sum it up in the following formula: God is three Persons in one Nature. The
three Persons of God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—are all equally God, and they cannot be
divided. Year 5 Red will focus on The Trinity during their prayer assembly on Monday afternoon.
RECONCILIATION WEEK
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May
and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—
the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. National Reconciliation Week is
a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us
can join the national reconciliation effort. The theme for NRW 2015 is It’s time to change it up.
Date Claimer- Catholic Education Week (26 Jul - 1 Aug) and Grandparents’ Day Friday 31 July
Catholic Education Week 2015 will be held from Sunday 26 July - Saturday 1 August and will focus on the theme:
Engaging Minds. Igniting Hearts. Serving Others.
The scriptural reference “Let your light shine” (Matthew 5:16) will also be incorporated into the artistic concept and
messaging.
We will be doing a number of things to celebrate Catholic Education Week. One such event will be Grandparents’ Day
which will take place on Friday 31 July. We will have a prayer assembly beginning at 8:45am followed by open
classrooms and morning tea.

 Grace Sewell known professionally as “Grace” has the No 1 record in
Australia with “You Don’t Own Me”.
 Conrad Sewell toured recently supporting Ed Sheeran and his song “Hold
Me Up” is doing well on the Australian charts.
Cooper Cronk (Queenslander) scored the first try and kicked the winning Field goal
in the first State of Origin Game for 2015.

QC CUP NETBALL
20 Netballers were all dressed and ready to go to QC Cup (Netball) this week but were disappointed to hear that the
Carnival had been postponed due to wet conditions at the courts. At this stage, the Carnival is scheduled
for Monday
1 June. Girls MUST be at school at 7.20am.
We will have one last training Friday 29 May 7.30am.
ATHLETICS TRAININGS
Our Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday, 25 June. The age group that a child competes in, is the age they turn
this year, i.e. a child born 2005 competes as a 10 yr old.
PREP, YEAR 1 AND YEAR 2 (7 YEAR OLDS): The focus at the Carnival for these children is to have fun and ‘have a go’ at
a variety of fun activities including a Sprint race. Preparation for this event will occur in PE lessons leading up to the
event.
YEAR 2 (8 YEAR OLDS) TO SENIORS: Preparation for the Carnival has been the focus of PE lessons this term. Events
children compete in at the Carnival are:
 8 years: 60m sprint, Shot Put, Long Jump and Ball Games.
 9 years: 80m sprint, Shot Put, Long Jump and Ball Games. 200m and 800m are optional.
 10-12 years: 100m sprint, Shot Put, Long Jump and Ball Games. 10-12 years must do either 200m or
800m. Some children may be allowed to do both and this will determined during PE lesson.
Starting 2 June there will also be non-compulsory trainings designed to further prepare children turning 8 - 12
years. This list of times will also be displayed on the door to Ms Dempsey’s classroom.

TWILIGHT MARKET - THANK YOU
Thank you to everyone who came and supported the Twilight Market on the
weekend. By all accounts, everyone had a fantastic afternoon, there was a diverse
display of quality goods available, scrumptious food, brilliant prizes and a fun Fashion
Parade put on by In Style Boutique and Intimo Clothing. We raised $1,300 for our school and cemented
friendships with businesses in our community.
A big thank you to De Bertoli Wines for donating all the Champagne for the Twilight Market. They have
been loyal supporters of our school for a very long time and have provided us with the Champagne for
each Twilight Market. Again a big thank you to them, we are extremely grateful and appreciative of their
support. We must also send a big thank you to the following mums who did a brilliant job of modeling in
our fashion parade, they were: Leanne Lambert, Kate Murphy, Sara Andriani, Katherine Bruback, Nicole
Brooks and Andreia Wigan.
I would also like to thank the following people for helping out on the day, we couldn’t have done it without your help:
They are Mark Badke, Tara Martin, Rebecca Patane, Carol Atme, Sherryn Jones, Gaye Buckle and Renae Miles. Also a
big thank you to Carmel Graham, Christine Anthony, Leanne Lambert, Kate Murphy, Andreia Wigan, Carol Atme, Karen

scrumptious food. Everyone was so impressed with the quality, taste and variety of food available. When we receive
help in this area we are able to keep our costs down so we have higher profits that go back into our school to help in the
areas that need it most so thank you again ladies! I hope we haven’t left anyone out. A final thank you to Andrea
Mercier, Mary Anne Hiscutt and Karen Tignani for all their tireless organizing behind the scenes, who without their
vision the Twilight Market wouldn’t go ahead.

Community News …
PARENTS BOOK CLUB This month we read The Children Act by Ian McEwan, and The Women in Black by Madeleine St.
John. Both fairly short novels, and our members really enjoyed them both. The Children Act particularly,
beautifully written, a story of a High Court Judge on the one hand faced with the collapse of her marriage
and on the other dealing with a case where the decision means life or death for a youth with leukemia.
The Women in Black is a charming and witty novel set in Sydney in the 1950s, the main characters are the
sales ladies in a department store modelled on David Jones. We highly recommend these books, well
worth reading. The Children Act gets 4 out of 5 stars and The Women in Black we rated 3.5.
Our next meeting will be Monday 1 June at Cafe di Luna, Sunnybank at 7.30pm, we will be discussing I, Robot by Isaac
Asimov.
