Chamber of commerce working to revive tartan banner project
Maxville is a hub of Scottish heritage, and
visitors can see it reflected in street names, family names, and the name of the town itself – as
it happens, even the telephone poles along Maxville’s Main Street are no exception.
With the tartan banner project, led by the
Maxville and District Chamber of Commerce,
banners are displayed on telephone poles around
town, displaying a family name and tartan,
along with the name of the village.
The tartan banner project began in 2003,
says Katherine MacDonald, who is now in
charge of the project for the chamber of commerce. There were once 62 banners lining the
streets, but in the past few years, as people
moved away or did not renew their membership, that number dipped down to 48.
MacDonald says the chamber is working to
increase the number of banners again.
She says the project is a perfect fit for Maxville. “It really just shows what Maxville is all
about,” she says. “It’s a really beautiful project,
and that’s why we would really like to see the
numbers go back up. It really fills the streets of
Maxville.”
To help promote the project, the chamber
of commerce recently applied for and received a
$1,200 community grant from North Glengarry Township.
The banner project wouldn’t work everywhere, but MacDonald said many, even most,
people in Maxville have a family tartan and
know what it is. “There’s a lot of pride,” she said.
The banner project is a way to show that pride,
especially during the highland games, she said,
when many people have family visit from afar.
While most of the tartans on display are
those of common Glengarry names, like Graham, Kennedy, and McGillivray, says MacDonald, some are more unique, like the Glengarry
Highland Games banner or the Chamber of
Commerce’s own banner.

Glengarry Curling Club raising funds for new playing surface
The entire community came out to support the Glengarry Curling Club, in Maxville, on April 16, for a sold-out
“Paint Nite” fundraiser that attracted 102 participants.
“The instructor walked you through your different
stages of the painting and there were lots of drinks and
snacks to keep the evening light. I’m not an artist, but it
was lots of fun,” said Glengarry Curling Club secretary Jennifer Fraser.
The event was organized by club members Audrey
MacQueen and Joan McKay, and it raised more than
$3,500 to support the replacement of the club’s ice pad.
“It’s going to cost about $250,000 to suck out the old
sand and to put in new concrete (the base for the ice pad).
The entire community is rallying around to help,” said Fraser.
In order to finance the project, the curling club has applied to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for grants and
they are seeking sponsorships from local businesses.
The curling club aims to have the new ice pad installed
by late September so that it is ready to lay ice next season.
The Glengarry Curling Club currently has 82 regular
members and 24 junior members, between the ages of four
and 14.
The junior program is run by Mike Finnerty and
Mary-Ellen Schellenberg, who are in the process of completing additional teaching certifications so that they can
grow the program and compete in more bonspiels.
“We have always had a junior program, but over the last
couple of years it has really taken off. I think it’s because
curling is becoming more popular on television, which enables more children to see it and want to participate,” said
Fraser.
The junior curling program runs from mid-October to
early April. The cost to join is $55 per child. Classes are
held every Sunday, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Children
can also participate in a number of bonspiels and friendly
tournaments between local clubs.

Curling volunteers of the year
SOMETHING OLD AND something new. The “Maxville Messenger” that you hold
in your hand began as a conversation about getting the word out to everyone in Maxville about the fun Music Festival that takes place in town every May. That conversation
grew to include Maxville’s 125th anniversary and other community information. The
idea of publishing a special news sheet just for Maxville residents, emerged. We decided
to call it the Maxville Messenger, borrowing the name of a newspaper published long
ago right here in Maxville. (Thanks to James Joyce for this suggestion.) And so: something old and something new. Watch for the Maxville Messenger inside a free copy of
The Review in your mailbox during the month of April.

possible. And take note of all that volunteers are doing in your community. Events,
markets, concerts and more are organized for you to take in and enjoy. When you live
