Founders’ Day 21 May
1
Out Of The Hat
A warm welcome to our new Grade 8
Housemother, Lynne Lawrence, who
started this term. Her beautiful smile
has brought a ray of light to Tully
Hall.
Some events that have taken place
in boarding over the last few weeks
were:
THEME EVENINGS
This term we have had two different
theme evenings. The first evening
we joined up with the day girls for an
evening of day girl/boarder “Olympic
events” where the girls enjoyed an
evening with supper at Rosies (build
a burger) then activities on the top
field.
The second evening SCA
asked us to join them in their bonfire
evening which was a great success.
We also say goodbye to Michele
Segal and Charlie Schoerie who
have assisted us with Boarder Assistant duties. Wendy Dlamini and Carmen Brand will be joining us.
WATER
We’re nearly half way through the
year and boarding has survived all
the water shortages. Thank you to
all those parents who sent their
daughters back with extra water and
hand sanitizer; it has been a great
help. To put your minds at ease, the
girls have been fantastic in coping
with the water cuts. Thank you to the
day girls’ parents, aunts and grandmothers who have taken a number of
our girls home for a quick shower.
Water cuts have become a regular
occurance for Pietermaritzburg so
we have made sure that the kitchen
has extra drinking water in stock.
The water tanks in the ceilings of the
boarding establishment have been re
-instated for emergency water and a
Jojo tank placed at the LHC. This
does give us a bit of relief. Thank
you also to Theunis Ferreira and
Barry Moig who have willingly arranged numerous buckets of water
for boarding during this trying time;
this water is used for toilet flushing
etc.
ETIQUETTE TRAINING
Brenda Horner from Gap Academy
gave a brief talk on general etiquette
and social graces around the table.
HYGIENE TALK
Boarding arranged for the Grade 8
girls to be given a general hygiene
talk during their LO lesson. With
having so many girls living together
we find that a reminder to the girls on
general hygiene is always welcome.
DINNERS WITH MRS
KOLLER AND THE
HEADS OF HALLS
The junior girls love to dress up!
They arrived “turned out” all dressed
up and ready to have fun. The
‘dance off’ was greatly enjoyed!
We had a far calmer Grade 9 dinner.
We started the evening with two ice
breakers and true to form Melissa
Duarte kept us entertained with her
antics. Skittles for pudding was a hit!
WEEKEND OUTINGS
To add to a number of other outings
this last term, the junior boarders
together with a couple of the Grade 8
and 9 girls went hiking at Cumberland.
GRADES 8 & 9 SOCIAL
WITH ST CHARLES
COLLEGE
Last weekend the Grade 8 & 9 girls
enjoyed a games evening with the
Grade 8 & 9 boys from St Charles.
When the boys arrived, the girls
were rather shy but in no time there
was lots of chatting and exchanging
of stories. Even a dance or two were
welcomed.
EXAM TIME
To end on a serious note, exams
have started and boarding takes on
a quieter atmosphere. The girls
knuckle down to prep each evening
and often ask for a little extra time for
learning, which we grant them. For
those of you who are not aware, the
Grade 10 & 11 girls have the privilege of going home during the week
if they do not have an exam the next
day.
Good luck to all the girls writing exams and know that if you work hard,
the holidays will be better appreciated.
Gill Koller - Boarding Co-ordinator
BOARDER CHAPELS
The girls have enjoyed the more frequent morning chapels which now
start later, giving them an easier
Sunday morning wake-up time. We
have had a number of guest speakers and the girls always relate well to
the “Youth Teams” who entertain the
girls with wonderful praise and worship and entertaining messages.

Junior School
PRE-PRIMARY
MUSIC HOUR
Last week, I had the privilege and joy
of accompanying the Junior School
Band on their overnight tour to
Underberg. It was an opportunity to
interact with the girls in a different
environment. I had forgotten just how
loud the talking and singing on a bus
can get – especially with 33 musicians!
Our overnight stay at Ashtonvale
was comfortable, with some girls
getting more sleep than others! We
performed at three very diverse
schools on Friday and I was reminded of the following: that our girls are
privileged to have the opportunity to
learn to play a musical instrument; to
have dedicated and passionate music teachers; the opportunity to play
in a band, and tour sharing their talents with others. I am very grateful to
Mrs Aldum for organising the tour
and am in awe of Ms Theron for her
wonderful skill as band conductor.
Next year we hope to include the
choir on a tour.
Our annual Pre-Primary music morning was attended by a number of
local Pre-Schools. Our Grade RR – 3
girls were involved in a variety of
musical items.
Playing outdoors at Faithway School.
Mrs Mustard, Mrs du Plessis and
Mrs Duffy put together a wonderful
programme that was enjoyed by all.
Playing at Noah’s Ark Pre-Primary School.
Mrs Duffy encouraging audience involvement.
Playing at Underberg School.
3
Grade 5’s trip to Durban.
O
ur Grade 5 girls and
teachers went on their first
overnight stay to Durban.
They enjoyed a busy and rewarding
educational programme, visiting the
following places: The Sharks Board,
The Science Centre, Mini Town, The
Maritime Museum and Treasure
Beach.
FOUNDERS’
DAY
On this celebratory day, the staff vs
1st hockey team was a fiercely contested match where the staff, to the
astonishment of the spectators, outplayed the girls.
EARLY MORNING
CROSS-COUNTRY
U11 hockey girls love playing the game!
GRADE 2 VISIT TO
BUTTERFLIES FOR AFRICA
W
ith three weeks left of
a very busy term, we
have a number of
functions and activities to look forward to: the school play “Adventures
of Alice”; the Grade 6s have their
overnight beach hike from Port Edward to Margate; the Cordwalles
Choir evening; the Black Tie Music
Evening at the City Hall and the Junior Primary Mini-Comrades Marathon.
