President’s Message
Dear friends:
Summer is the time for play but for us it’s the busiest time of year. Besides
working very hard on the placement and adoption of the numerous stray cats
and kittens we took in the past few months (since spring/summer is the
KITTEN SEASON), we have also been very busy preparing for the Starlight
Soiree, a fund raising gala.
The gala was held on July 19. It was very successful and close to 200 people
attended. For details and pictures please go to Page 7.
Now that the gala is over, we have to go on to another big fund raising event THE PET FEST & WALKATHON! It will be held on September 14 at the Port
Credit Memorial Park. The poster and pledge forms are now available from our
website. This is the biggest event of our society and your participation is most
important. Please start collecting pledges to help our animals. Let’s break the
record!

SANDY
LIL PUMPKIN
by Ron and Deb Wanda
Even though over the years we were quite familiar with the MHS and had made periodic donations, surprisingly enough it
wasn't until late 2008/early 2009 that we became familiar with the Society’s foster program and adoption process. The
wonderful foster parents who take care of the rescued pets until they are adopted do such a great job. Prior to that, we
had dogs, however, they were usually acquired by us as puppies or quite young in the process of us having them become
part of our family. Most will know that MHS is a real rescue group and they rescue regardless. Many of the dogs they
rescue and eventually put up for adoption are generally, but not always, older and some have medical/behaviour issues.
No doubt that is a deterrent for some, but there are always people who want to give a home to these dogs who are
always passed by. One day, when we were reviewing the dogs up for adoption on the MHS website, we spotted this
unique little creature with the tongue hanging outside of the side of her mouth. She was a little Maltese that was
nicknamed "LIL PUMPKIN". We made an inquiry and before long, we were introduced to her foster parent, Sue Gaskell.
When we saw this little dog in Sues home, we knew she was going to be part of our family. We were the only ones that
inquired about her. That was in March/2009 and the rest is history. Her adoption was kind of fortuitous in that our Bichon
Frise "Beckie” sadly passed away of congestive heart failure in November of 2009.
It wasn't too long after that we heard from Sue about another dog she had, a Shitzu named SANDY who needed a home.
However, upon visiting for the first time we saw that SANDY could be much more of a challenge in that only Sue could
handle her without her growling. Fortunately, as it turned out, we also met ZORA, a "slightly" overweight miniature
pinscher who was extremely friendly and also needed a home. To make a long story short, we ended adopting BOTH
of them in January/2010!. Sandy had some ongoing health issues and it took a few months of patience for her to fit in
with all the others and get rid of her shyness, however, it did eventually happen and she worked out just fine.
Unfortunately, with all older animals, despite Sandy's lung issues which we were medically able to control, in early July of
2011, we were broadsided by her having complete kidney failure and she passed away. Only a year and a half with us,
but. Although much too short in time, Sue reassured us that she couldn't have had a better home during that period and
we should be proud. During that summer, "LIL PUMPKIN " had also spent some time in the hospital. As she was already
an older dog when we adopted her, her health had been deteriorating. Once again, fate took a hand in that we spotted
on the MHS website SALLY, another Maltese, who was 80-90% deaf. She was being fostered by Tom Hodgins, an all
time record MHS foster parent. We went to visit her and brought her home the same day! She was essentially a
muounger version of "LIL PUMPKIN". Sadly and ironically, three days later after adopting SALLY, "LIL PUMPKIN"
passed away quietly in her bed at home. We lost two MHS adoptees within two months. Luckily, till this day, although
getting older and losing her eyesight, ZORA (our "not so miniature pinscher") is still with us.
A few months later, Sue asked if we were interested in another wonderful little girl, a Shitzu s named "SNOW WHITE"
aka "SNOWY". Sue indicated there were some medical issues that needed some ongoing treatment and, with spaying, it
would be a few months before she became available for adoption. During all this time Sue had become quite attached to
SNOWY and she was concerned about her adjustment in her adoptive home. In Dec 2012 we officially adopted her. It
took only a short time for Snowy to fit in and she has turned out to be a wonderful friendly and loving companion and an
integral part of our canine family.
We have adopted 5 older dogs from MHS in this relatively short time of four and half years. This journey has been both
happy and sad. However, it has been extremely rewarding, knowing that we were able to give them all a good home.

“The soiree evening last Friday was super!! - good food, wine, entertainment, video,
prizes & people!! I had a great time & enjoyed myself meddling in a bidding war …”
“With the kind of success you have experienced, I can see this as an event that will grow
into a full-blown gala dinner evening…”
Our 2013 Starlight Soiree was held on July 19 at the Fuzion Banquet Hall and everyone had a great time! It’s a beautiful place
and delicious
dsavegetarian food, wine, dessert and coffee/tea were served. Close to 200 people attended. After a presentation
of awards for outstanding volunteers, a video was shown on some special MHS pets. The NATIONAZ, a band played by some
12-14 kids, was the highlight of the event. The fabulous prizes at the Silent Auction and Raffle tables attracted a big crowd
and there were many happy winners. We are pleased to report that a total of over $8,000 was raised. We would like to
thank Le-Anh Ngo & Cassie Bryans for organising the event. A big THANK YOU to all of our guests, donors and volunteers.
Special thanks to ELECTROLUX for the generous donations of many electric appliances. We hope to see you again next year!

SCHOOL VISITS
Pheasant Junior School
Three students of Pheasant Junior School (about 10 yrs old) who called themselves the CANINE CREW had
a fund raising month for our animals. On April 4 Sue Gaskell, our Director, brought Lewie her dog (of course
adopted from MHS!) and visited all the classrooms to thank the students! Besides a lot of pet items, almost $200 $200
was raised by the school kids. Thanks very much the Pheasant junior CANINE CREW!
Erin Mills Middle School
On April 17th Sue Gaskell also visited Erin Mills Middle School and provided an information session to students
about being socially responsible people, volunteering with and 'giving back' to the community where they live.
ADOP-A-THONS
During the months of April to June two PET Adopt-a-thons took place, one at
PETSMART and one at GLOBAL PET FOODS. A couple of Cat Adopt-a-thons were
also held at PET VALU (Creditview and Britannia).
Pictured here are Mom Sue & Lily (humans!) and Meeko, Domino, Coco and Roscoe the
doggies at GLOBAL PET FOODS, 1170 Burnhamthorpe Rd (Creditview).
Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped out at the various adopt-a-thons.
BOOK SIGNING & FUND RAISING
On June 1 Sue Gaskell and Lewie her dog asoattended a book signing event hosted by the author of the
children’s book Dear Doxie Dollars – The Magicial Cave Adventure. The event was held at PET VALU in
Alderwood Plaza . A total of $185 was also raised for our Society.

BEING CAUTIOUS
Is COOL this summer
by Nomi Berger
Picture yourself on a summer day in a long winter coat.
Are you hot? Itchy? Thirsty? Are you desperately looking for shade?
Now picture your pets on that same summer day. And you’ll know how THEY feel.
To keep them safe this season, here are some suggestions:
-Have a professional groomer give your dog a short summer haircut.
-Guard against sunburn by applying either a children’s SPF 45 sun block or a special
animal sunscreen to your dog’s ears, nose and belly.
-Create a makeshift canopy using a blanket draped across two chair tops.
-Limit your dog’s outdoor exercise. Walk early in the morning or at sunset. If the day’s
particularly hot and humid, skip your walks altogether.
-As a light activity, turn on a garden sprinkler and let your dog run through it.
-Set out a small wading for him to lie in while you monitor him closely.
-Keep his water bowl filled, cool and free of floating debris.
-Avoid hot asphalt, which can quickly burn the pads of your dog’s paws, walk on the
grass instead.
-Never leave your dog unattended in the car. Whether in the shade with the windows
cracked or with the air conditioning on, your car’s a potential deathtrap.
Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like exaggerated panting, excessive salivation, a
vacant expression, restlessness or listlessness, trembling, or skin that’s hot to the touch.
If your dog’s exhibiting any of these signs, get him into the shade immediately. Give him
cool water to drink and either hose him down, cover him with cool, damp cloths or put
him in a bathtub filled with cool water. If his condition worsens, seek immediate
medical attention.
Remember: being a responsible pet owner is being an informed one. The list of safety
rules may seem long, but the hot days of summer are longer.

“EMPTY THE TANK”
End Dolphin and Whale Captivity Everywhere
From Hawaii to Hong Kong…
Saturday, July 27, 2013 marked the
first time in history that opponents
of
marine
mammal
captivity
protested outside aquariums and
other facilities in 11 countries
around the world, simultaneously.
The international campaign, called
“Empty the Tanks,” could become an
annual ritual amid growing public
opposition
to
keeping
whales,
dolphins, and other animals in
swimming pools.

A doctor and a crocodile
A Zoo worker stood in front of a cave
of a crocodile. The jaw of the crocodile
is widely open. A visitor comes up to
a worker and asked:
- What has happened to the crocodile?
- I don’t know yet. The doctor went there
an hour ago and has not returned yet
to all of those who contributed articles to this issue.
A big vote of thanks to all of our volunteers, foster parents & donors.
