SALLY BROMPTON WEEKLY HOROSCOPE
Your Weekly Horoscope By Sally Brompton
June 6th-12th
IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK:
A new moon in your birthday week promises exciting times ahead, especially if you
are the sort of Gemini who is not afraid to follow your instincts. Forget about trying
to make up for the past – the only thing that matters is what you make of the future.
ARIES (March 21-April 20)
You won’t lack for ideas this week but you
must be selective in what you choose to
spend your time and energy on. One particular insight or inspiration will stand out
from the rest and that is the one you must
focus on. It could make you famous.
LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23):
If you feel that you have been in one place
too long and would do better in a different environment then by all means just
get up and go. This week’s new moon will
point you in the right direction. Don’t think
about it, just get moving.
TAURUS (April 21 -May 21):
You appear to have missed something
important and must now go back and find
out what it is. Don’t think you can just forget about it because it will only return to
torment you twice as badly later on. Get
on top of it right away.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22):
This week’s new moon means it is time to
get serious about what you own and earn
and what you possess. Think long-term
and don’t let your frivolous friends influence you. Just because they throw their
cash around does not mean you have to
as well.
GEMINI (May 22-June 21):
The new moon in your sign means you
are supremely confident in your abilities
– you believe there is nothing you cannot
do. But don’t forget that you are human
and have limits like everyone else. Know
what they are and work with them.
CANCER (June 22-July 23):
It may be tempting to give up on a plan or
project you once had high hopes for but
don’t be too hasty. Something will happen early in the week that reignites your
interest and one big push could be all it
takes to get moving again.
LEO (July 24-Aug. 23):
You can quite easily turn what looks
like a setback into a huge success this
week, simply by staying calm and getting
friends and family members to help you
out. Ask them for their suggestions and
don’t be afraid to admit that they know
better than you.
VIRGO (Aug. 24-Sept. 23):
On the one hand you need to get things
moving, but on the other you need to be
cautious. That might sound contradictory
but you can have it both ways. Be ambitious by all means but make sure you
know what you are letting yourself in for.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21):
You may be a nice guy by nature but over
the next 24 hours you will realize that you
need to get tough with certain people.
It seems that friendly warnings have not
done the trick, so now you must lay down
the law – and mean it.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20):
If a job is worth doing it is worth getting
paid for and with this week’s new moon
taking place in the work area of your
chart you should be charging top dollar.
Perfection, which is what you are offering,
comes cheap whatever the price.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19):
A little bit of extra effort now could bring
amazing rewards later in the month, so
forget about trivial things and devote
yourself to whatever creative or artistic
activity means the most to you. Don’t just
be good at it – be brilliant.
PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20):
Play it cool this week and don’t worry
about what your friends are doing. It is
always a mistake to compare yourself
to others and it would be even more of
a mistake now that the moon is new. Be
yourself – it’s who you were meant to be.

Compost, the Recycling of Food
A great way to reduce your waste is to compost your kitchen
scraps (no meat). If you are vegetarian, this option is fantastic,
especially if you self haul your trash. By putting all your kitchen
scraps (add an equal amount of brown leaves) into a compost
bin, your trash becomes very light and non smelly. Now your
trash does not attract mice and bugs, so it can be stored longer
so you can cut down on those trips to the dump. Infinity sells good
compost bins at cost! Your garden will appreciate the compost,
too. If you recycle and compost, and practice
reduction and reuse, your waste will probably be
reduced by 75%!

Learn Something New Every Day: not a
bad mantra to live by. Yesterday, the lesson was particularly rewarding as I visited
the Waterfowl Building in Easton to view
the exhibit of paintings by Ruth Starr Rose
(1887-1965) entitled “Revelations of African American Life in Maryland and the
World.”
Ms. Rose, daughter of a wealthy landholding family, grew up in Talbot County
at a plantation called Hope House. Nearby
was the plantation on which Frederick
Douglass spent his childhood. Two such
disparate upbringings on the Eastern
Shore could hardly be imagined to lead
to such similar beliefs in the dignity of all
human beings and the complementary expressions of those lives in writing, art, and
everyday living.
The portraits that greet you on entering the
exhibit are so strong and vibrant that you
almost expect them to climb out of their
frames and offer you a welcome. These
are the faces of people Ms. Rose knew
well - the people with whom she lived
and worked and worshiped. Not only did
she attend DeShields United Methodist
Church in Copperville with her mother, but
also taught Sunday School there.
From that congregation she learned the
African American spirituals that became
the focus of a series of lithographs depicting her understanding of those beautiful
songs as interpreted to her by her friends
in that church. I still find it incredible and
wonderful that two white women at the
turn of the 20th century on the segregated
Eastern Shore would have been so intimately involved with an A.M.E. church as
equals in their worship life.
Walking though the exhibit is a bit disorienting. The respectful representation of
African Americans at work in crab houses
and sail lofts, enjoying a moment of leisure
in their segregated communities of Copperville and Unionville, or attending a local
circus might lead some to imagine that the
artist was a member of that community
herself. When Ms. Rose’s work was exhibited at Howard University in 1956, the students assumed that the artist was black.
What a wonderful endorsement that was!
It is no surprise that the Starr family had a
“keen, progressive social conscience”, to
quote the biographical information provided by the exhibition. Throughout her life,
Ruth not only supported the Civil Rights
movement, but also black artists, and
numbered among her friends performers
such as Lead Belly and Paul Robeson. Her
social circle also included famous writers and actors who regularly visited her at
Hope House.
One of the families featured in her paintings was the Moany’s. (In fact, my favorite
painting in the exhibit is entitled “Moany
Boy On The Stairs.”) At the entrance to
the exhibit there is a photograph of the
extended Moany family taken when they
visited the White House in 1957 as guests
of President and Mrs. Eisenhower. The
President and First Lady are surrounded
by these Eastern Shore natives, so honored because George Moany was an aide
to Dwight Eisenhower, dating from his service in WWII, through his presidency, and
on into retirement until his death. Moany’s
wife served in a similar capacity to Mrs.
Eisenhower from the White House years to
Gettysburg and on until her death.
The exhibit brochure states, “Racial injustice was the central problem Rose grappled with throughout her life...She created
racial equality in her art by giving honest
visual presence to a largely marginalized
population.” She did that - and so much
more. By painting her subjects with the
dignity they were often denied in society,
she gave them the self-esteem to rise
above the ‘slings and arrows’ of a cruel
and oppressive social structure, while giving us the gift of her vision.
The show runs through June 19th. I’ll be
going back, and I hope to see you there.

Kent County Doctors are Top
Sponsors of Golf Tournament to
Benefit UM Shore Medical Center
Gerard S. O’Connor, MD, a boardcertified general surgeon practicing
at UM Shore Medical Center at
Chestertown, and Mark Zwanger, MD,
a former Chestertown Emergency
Department physician, along with his
husband, Malcolm Kram, DVM, have
stepped up in a big way to become the
top sponsors of the UM Chester River
Health Foundation’s 22nd annual golf
Gerald O’Connor, MD Mark Zwanger, MD
tournament fundraiser.
This year’s tournament will raise funds to purchase critical equipment for the
Surgical Services Department including all-new, state-of-the-art, high definition,
white light digital colonoscopes and endoscopes. This equipment will help identify
and treat colorectal cancers and other digestive system disorders at the earliest
possible stage and thus, save lives.
“The new equipment is critically important in our efforts to provide the highest
quality cancer screenings for our community,” O’Connor says. “It is my honor to
demonstrate my continued support of our hospital in Chestertown and the people
we serve, and I hope the community will rally behind me and the Chester River
Health Foundation in this and future fundraising efforts.”
Drs. Zwanger and Kram have been major sponsors of the golf tournament for
seven years. “We think it is very important to generously support our community’s
hospital because it is a vital institution for our community,” Zwanger explains.
The Chester River Health Foundation’s signature fundraising event will tee off
on Friday, June 3rd at the Chester River Yacht & Country Club just outside of
Chestertown. To make a donation in support of this event or to make a donation
to help purchase this vital equipment for the patients served by UM Shore Medical
Center at Chestertown, please contact Maryann Ruehrmund, CFRE, executive
director, 410-810-5660.

For over 30 years, Saint Martin’s Ministries (SMM) has been providing food, clothing and
shelter to local working families, elderly and veterans who need help. SMM provides
transitional housing residence for women and their children, emergency food and
eviction prevention assistance, and a thrift store. Poverty in rural areas is particularly
problematic due to lack of available resources. All programs at SMM support our
neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake (BBBSGC) is the oldest and largest
mentoring organization in the region, having served the Eastern Shore since 1982. BBBSGC
is committed to helping children reach their fullest potential through professionally supported
youth programs with measurable impacts. Our programs are tailored to the needs of children
and include educational and social activities that they would otherwise never experience.

Have you ever met someone and immediately felt like you knew them your whole life?
That is how we feel about our beautiful friend FAITH KING. Her smile can light up a room.
Over the past year, FAITH was feeling poorly and visited the doctor often to try and get
to the bottom of the problem. FAITH ended up spending 15 days in JOHNS HOPKINS
before the diagnosis of HODGKINS LYMPHOMA WAS MADE. What a crushing blow!
Especially for someone who had been so full of energy, vibrant and enthusiastic about life,
someone who was planning the wedding of their dreams. The fun filled wedding has now
taken a back seat to her fight for recovery. Trips across the bridge for CHEMOTHERAPY,
followed by days of NAUSEA AND FATIGUE are now her normal routine.
Through it all, FAITH’S mother and fiance are by her side, and HER SMILE IS
UNWAVERING. Things we take for granted; our hair, the taste of food, energy to
do everyday tasks are now A PAINFUL LUXURY FOR FAITH. The joys of
looking for her first home has been replaced by the stress of medical bills.
We are hoping to help alleviate the expense of the bills and ALL OF THE OTHER
EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH THE SITUATION. WE HOPE THAT WE CAN
COUNT ON YOU TO HELP OUT. – Karen Willis, Jen Teat, Terri Garvey, Kelly Rush

Moon Air Helps a Disabled
Senior Citizen in Chestertown
One of the employees at Moon Air
visited a gentleman to discuss some
air conditioner options. During
his conversation he determined
that the gentleman was a disabled
senior citizen. His house had his
window air conditioners stolen
several times. He is on a limited
budget and wanted to know if
we had any options for him. This
employee was so impressed with
this gentleman’s good spirits and
personality that he just wanted to
do something special. This was
brought to the attention to the
owner of the company and after
hearing the story he said “Let’s
donate a central air conditioning
system to him”. This house is
not even set up for central air
conditioning. This was no simple
project, but it was the right thing
to do. Learning more about the
gentleman, we found that he is

Claws for a Cause Crab Feast Benefits
UM Shore Emergency Center on July 14th
Sponsors are signing up for
University of Maryland Shore
Regional
Health’s
upcoming
“Claws for a Cause” crab feast,
proceeds from which will help
fund the purchase of new, state of
the art telemedicine equipment
for UM Shore Emergency Center
in Queenstown. Set for Thursday,
July 14th from 6pm to 9pm at the
Fisherman’s Inn Crab Deck in
Grasonville, Claws for a Cause will
include all-you-can-eat steamed
crabs as well as a buffet of fried

assorted sides.
Telemedicine technology will

technologies

help save lives in critical care
and emergency situations. Staff
members at the Queenstown
emergency center anticipate that
once it is purchased and installed
the new technology will especially
enhance treatment capabilities for
behavioral health, vascular and
pediatric patients. “We are on pace
to see 15,500 patients this year,”
says Mary Alice Vanhoy, manager,
UM Shore Emergency Center at
Queenstown. “With assistance from
the community, our team works to
provide the highest quality care
and resources to our patients and
their families. Telemedicine will
provide a needed resource at our
emergency center and we are very
excited about this new technology
as we continue to strive for safe
practice and safe care.”

The American Legion began in 1919 as a patriotic
veterans’ organization focused on service to
veterans, service members and communities.
Parker-White Post 143 helps support veterans,
their families and other organizations that benefit
veterans. The American Legion Post 143 is the first
Post in Kent County started by African-Americans.
We are looking for new members. Interested persons
can go to the National American Legion website,
www.legion.org, for membership requirements. The
future of any volunteer organization is dependent on
recruiting new members and those members taking on an active role in the
management of the group they are working with. The post will pay the first
year’s membership fee for all active duty military members.

FLAG FACTS
The United States Flag, adopted on June 14, 1777, is the fourth oldest
national flag in the world. Denmark’s flag, adopted in 1219, is the oldest.
•A flag expert is called a “vexillologist.”
•The blue field on the U.S. Flag is called the “union.”
•On Memorial Day (the last Monday in May), to honor all who died
in battle, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only,
then raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day.
•Since 1834, the U.S. Flag has flown continuously next to the
grave of the Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette,
near Paris, France.
•June 14 was proclaimed Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson
in 1916. While Flag Day was a popular celebration in scores of
communities for many years after Wilson’s proclamation, it didn’t
receive its official Congressional designation until 1949.
The United States Flag should always be treated with the utmost care
and respect. Remember, the flag represents a living country, and as
such, is considered a living thing.
•Always display the flag with the blue union field up – never
display the flag upside down, except as a distress signal.
•Always hold the flag carefully – never let it touch anything
beneath it: the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.
• Always keep the flag aloft and free – never carry it flat or
horizontally.
•Always keep the flag clean and safe – never let it become torn,
soiled or damaged.
•Always dispose of a flag properly, preferably through veterans’
organizations.
•Always treat the flag with respect. Never use it for advertising
purposes. Never embroider it on household items or pieces of
clothing. Never use it as part of a costume or athletic uniform.
However, it is proper to attach a flag patch to the uniform of military
personnel, fire fighters, police officers and members of other
patriotic organizations – provided the patch is properly affixed.

Dear Dr. Truth:
My father’s friend came onto me. I am a
healthy good looking 21 year old. I got
a boob job for my 21st birthday and he
said he just couldn’t resist. I do put them
out there but not for sick old men. The
girls have changed my life! I am getting
ten times more attention then I ever
expected. I am having a blast! My mother
was against it and says I need to tone it
down. I am 21 and can do what I want. I
just need my father’s sick friends to leave
me alone. It’s causing trouble between
my parents. What should I do? DD
Dear DD,
If you are 21 and can do what you want,
know there may be consequences for
your actions. It is great that your boob
job has boosted your self esteem and at
least you know your parents are having
conflicts and why. The question is are you
mature enough to do something about
it?…AND THAT’S THE TRUTH!

Vendors Sought for Rock Hall’s
4th of July Holiday Celebration

The Chuck Redd Quartet: “Vibes:
A Tribute” at The Mainstay June 4th
The Chuck Redd Quartet brings “Vibes: A Tribute to Lionel
Hampton, Milt Jackson and Terry Gibbs” to the Mainstay in
Rock Hall on Saturday, June 4th at 8:00pm.
Chuck Redd and his quartet featuring his brother Robert Redd
on piano, bassist Romeir Mendez and Wesley Anderson on
drums, pay tribute to three iconic jazz vibraphone players
that have had a profound influence on Chuck and probably
every other vibraphone player on the planet: Lionel Hampton,
Milt Jackson and Terry Gibbs. The Quartet will perform music
closely associated with all three of these jazz vibes virtuosos,
Chuck Redd
an evening of swing, ballads, a little be bop and some American
Popular Song classics.
Along with brother Robert Redd is pleased to present two young musicians: the
Baltimore based bassist Romeir Mendez who performs at major jazz venues in
DC and Baltimore and has toured internationally with Warren Wolf and Donald
Harrison and drummer Wesley Anderson from Los Angeles who recently began
working with The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, the premier Army touring jazz
big band.
Lionel Hampton introduced the world to the Vibraphone when he became
a member of the Benny Goodman Quartet. Milt Jackson transcended the
possibilities of the instrument with his ability to “sing” through the instrument
when playing ballads and blues. The legendary Terry Gibbs, is a bebop and
swing master who became a household name when he was musical director for
the Steve Allen and Regis Philbin television shows. Redd is honored to call Gibbs
a good friend – at age 92, Terry Gibbs is still very active, energetic and witty.
Chuck Redd is well known internationally as a performer on drums and vibraphone.
He began recording and touring the globe when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio at
the age of 21 and was a member of the Great Guitars (Barney Kessel, Byrd and
Herb Ellis.) To his credit are 25 European tours and six tours of Japan. He served
as Artist-In-Residence at The Smithsonian Jazz Café in Washington, DC from
2004-2008. Chuck Redd was featured vibraphonist with the Mel Torme All-Star
Jazz Quintet from 1991 until 1996. Redd is featured on over 75 recordings. He
can also be heard on the sound track to the popular television series, “The Great
Chefs”, and the NPR broadcast “Jazz Smithsonian.”
Redd frequently performs in New York City and tours nationally at festivals and
clubs. He is on the faculty at The University of Maryland School of Music and
presents master classes, workshops and lectures around the country.
Admission is $20. For information and reservations call 410-639-9133. Information
is also available at the Mainstay’s website www.mainstayrockhall.org.

CDC’S Response to Zika
Zika: The Basics of the Virus
and How to Protect Against It
About Zika
Zika virus spreads to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and
Ae. albopictus). People can also get Zika through sex with a man infected with Zika and it can be spread from a
pregnant woman to her fetus. People can protect themselves from mosquito bites and getting Zika through sex.
This fact sheet explains who’s most affected and why, symptoms and treatment, and how to protect against Zika.
Current
Zika Outbreak
Zika outbreaks are currently
happening in many countries and
territories. The mosquitoes that can
become infected with and spread
Zika live in many parts of the world,
including parts of the United States.
Specific areas where Zika virus is
spreading are often difficult to
determine and are likely to change
over time. If traveling, please visit the
CDC Travelers’ Health website for
the most recent travel information.
How Zika Spreads
The mosquitoes that carry Zika are aggressive daytime biters, but they can also bite at night.
A mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person already infected with Zika. That mosquito can
then spread the virus by biting more people. Zika virus can also spread:
• During sex with a man infected with Zika.
• From a pregnant woman to her fetus during pregnancy or around the time of birth.
• Through blood transfusion (likely but not confirmed).
Zika Symptoms
Many people infected with Zika won’t have symptoms or will only have mild
symptoms. The most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain, or red
eyes. Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache.
Symptoms can last for several days to a week. People usually don’t get
sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika.
Once a person has been infected with Zika, they are likely to be
protected from future infections.
Conjunctivitis
Fever
Joint pain
Rash
Why Zika is Risky for Some People
Zika infection during pregnancy can cause fetuses to have a birth defect of the brain called microcephaly.
Other problems have been detected among fetuses and infants infected with Zika virus before birth, such as
defects of the eye, hearing deficits, and impaired growth. There have also been increased reports of
Guillain-Barré syndrome, an uncommon sickness of the nervous system, in areas affected by Zika.
Microcephaly
How to Prevent Zika
There is no vaccine to prevent Zika. The best way to prevent diseases spread by mosquitoes is to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites.
Here’s how:
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
• Stay in places with air conditioning and window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
• Take steps to control mosquitoes inside and outside your home.
• Treat your clothing and gear with permethrin or buy pre-treated items.
• Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents. Always follow the product label instructions.
»» When used as directed, these insect repellents are proven safe and effective even for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
»» Do not use insect repellents on babies younger than 2 months old.
»» Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol on children younger than 3 years old.
• Mosquito netting can be used to cover babies younger than 2 months old in carriers, strollers, or cribs
to protect them from mosquito bites.
• Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened rooms are not available or if sleeping outdoors.
• Prevent sexual transmission of Zika by using condoms or not having sex.
What to do if You Have Zika
Repellent
www.cdc.gov/zika
There is no specific medicine to treat Zika.
Treat the symptoms:
• Get plenty of rest.
• Drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
• Take medicine such as acetaminophen to reduce fever and pain.
• Do not take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
• If you are taking medicine for another medical condition, talk to your healthcare provider before taking
additional medication. To help prevent others from getting sick, strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito
bites during the first week of illness.
