WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE ARTS IN HASTINGS
Upfront
Our local tourism
industry received a
major boost recently
with the screening
of Masterchef here
in
the
Hastings
District.
Filmed at Elephant Hill Winery,
the Masterchef contestants also
visited the Hastings Farmers’
Market where they sourced
ingredients for their dishes.
The Masterclass was filmed at
Black Barn Bistro where guest
chef Terry Lowe was joined by
two of the judges to cook three
stunning dishes featuring local
lamb.
quality produce and fine dining
venues that are located in the
District and reinforced why we
are known as the fruit bowl of
New Zealand.
The producers of the show
were high in their praise for
fruit and vegetables - and also
described the cheeses and
olive oil as amazing - while the
television footage showed the
contestants as having a great
time running around the market
collecting the produce. This type
of programme can only have a
positive spin-off for tourism in
Hastings.
This television exposure was
absolutely priceless for the local
tourism industry and showed
Hastings District at its very best.
Get creative in Hastings
If you’re a local artist and
want to show your art,
why not approach Creative
Hastings?
A hub for local artists to exhibit
their work (Creative Hastings
operates the Community Art Centre
Gallery). It is open 9.30am to
4pm weekdays and 10am to 2pm
Saturdays to peruse art at your
leisure.
Adjacent to the Westerman’s
Building on Russell Street, Creative
Hastings was established in the
MasterChef doesn’t often visit
regions around New Zealand to
film so to come to Hastings was
an enormous thumbs-up for the
our food producers. Promotion
of this type is invaluable as we
try to encourage more visitors to
come to the region. MasterChef
certainly highlighted the high-
1950s. Its original gatherings
and meetings were held in church
and school halls, and later in the
Hastings
Community
Cultural
Centre (now the Hastings City Art
Gallery). It moved to its present
premises and opened its own
Gallery in 1991.
In the last year the Gallery hosted
more than 40 exhibitions from over
100 local artists.
Come in and check out the annual

condition, although preliminary
investigations have shown that
some restoration work is required
since the last treatment.”
The Gallery is also a key partner

emerging artist each yea. The Art
Centre is also available for social
functions, gatherings and small
performances.
A space for professional artists
to display their work, Maree
hasturned the Gallery into a
place that excites, challenges and
extends visitors’ experiences.
Each year the Art Gallery features
around 12 exhibitions across
three spaces, with the extremely
popular. Multiply: Reinvigorating
Repetition currently on display in
the main gallery.
Maree has an extensive career
in the arts and education. She
has published on ‘Contemporary
Maori Women’s New Media Art
Practice’ and has also taught
video production and experimental
video practice at the University of
Waikato.
Conservation work is to
begin on the famous Peter
McIntyre mural in the Hall
of Memories at the Hastings
War Memorial Library.
“The Hall of Memories and Civic
Square entrance to the library will
be closed while the conservation
work is being done,” Paula Murdoch
says.
And during Christmas time you’ll
see the six-week - long annual
‘Christmas Sales’ featuring work
from more than 110 local art and
craft workers.

Paula Murdoch, district library
manager says, “The painted mural

forces on sea, land and air and last

and experienced artists.
An inspirational woman, Maree’s
around to stay with big plans for
future exhibitions at the Gallery.
The art gallery is open 7 days,
10am – 4.30pm and entry is free.
Go on, be inspired!
The conservation treatment will
include cleaning of the overall paint
surface along with retouching and
repairs to areas where colour loss
has occurred.
The mural is located in the library’s
Hall of Memories and was designed
by New Zealand War Artist Peter
McIntyre, when the decision to
build a war memorial library on
Civic Square was reached in 1952.
There are 358 people living
in Hawke’s Bay that work
for us. This month we talked
to Hastings City Art Gallery
Director, Maree Mills, whose
passion for the arts has
bought some top artists to
our District.
“The day we secured Rita (Angus),
I was so happy’’ exclaims Maree
who secures exhibitions for the Art
Gallery, along with her team, up to
18 months in advance.
“Hastings residents could have
travelled to Te Papa in Wellington
to see the exhibition, but we just
had to bring the selected works
here for everyone to see’’.
With an infectious personality,
and a passion for all things
art - especially film making and
exploring contemporary Maori
women’s art - Maree breathed new
life into the Art Gallery when she
moved from the Waikato to the
Hastings District in 2008.
Living by the coast in Haumoana,
Maree loves living in the Hastings
District.
“There are so many excellent
artists who live here and are
inspired by the region; it’s a real

Seven years ago, Wai
Marshall came to Swansea
Village in Flaxmere and
she’s never looked back.
A stone’s throw away from Flaxmere
Village, the library, swimming pools
and with parking on-site, Swansea
Village has 64 flats all offering open
plan living.
From $86 a week, Hastings residents
60-and-over can apply to live in
council’s housing which is safe and
warm. You can even make a friend
or two.
“My neighbours are both really
friendly’’, says Wai whose walls are
lined with family photos of her five
children and nine grandchildren.
“I love doing my garden’’, and it
shows. Wai spends hours in her
small garden, but not before she’s
finished the word puzzles in the local
newspaper!
Council’s Housing Officer, Kath
Nicholas, works tirelessly to
ensure each council house is well
maintained and serviced.
“We encourage all people over
the age of 60 and who can live
