In particular, ice and aquatic centres are energy intensive buildings. While most sustainable features do not require any further attention after the construction completion, there are features that require continuous effort from management and operation staff to ensure the functionality and efficiency anticipated during the design process. The focus of this presentation will be on sustainable features applicable to recreation facilities and how the LEED scoring system is applied. A49's Kent Event Centre (2008) in Washington, USA was the first LEED Gold spectator facility in North America and the Activa Sportsplex project (2008) in Kitchener, Ontario was the first LEED Gold Recreation Centre in Canada. Trends in Recreation Facilities Presented By Architecture 49 The presentation will focus on new trends in recreation and community facility design, along with examples of recently designed facilities from across the country. Architecture49 will share the experience from the Kin Centre project awarded the 2013 RFABC Bill Woycik Award for Outstanding Recreational Facility and St. Catharines Meridian Centre awarded the 2015 Brownie Award for the revitalization of a Brownfield site from the Canadian Urban Institute.
