Dear Friends,
It’s now almost 4 years since I began work as Priest-in-Charge of the Parish
of Burham & Wouldham.
I came here as someone whose experience of parish work was mainly in
urban areas, so I had lots to learn, though it was helped by the warm
welcome I received and people’s continuing kindness which I am truly
grateful for.
On Sunday September 25th at the 10.30 Service of Holy Communion I will
be made Rector of the Parish. The Archdeacon of Tonbridge, The Ven.
Clive Mansell will be there to install me, and there will be refreshments
afterwards in church. All are welcome on this day, and the school car park
will be open.
I am looking forward to continuing with priestly ministry here in this time
of change for the area as we seek to welcome new neighbours in Peters
Village.
I enjoy leading worship Sunday by Sunday in All Saints Wouldham every
week and on 2 Sundays in the month at Burham Community Centre which
is a perfect setting for Messy Church and also a beautiful space for worship.
I also enjoy and feel very privileged to conduct baptisms, weddings and
funerals, and to take part in worship in schools, and to share in social events
in the parish
I feel immensely privileged to be leading a church community which is
outward-looking, welcoming, pastorally-minded and inclusive.
Don’t just take my word for the above statement! Recent comments in the
visitors book in church include: ‘lovely church, very welcoming and very
friendly people’, ‘it feels warm and very friendly’ ‘wonderful, peaceful feel’
and from a younger visitor ‘nice and kind because they give snacks’!
I ask for your prayers at this time.
In peace, Mike

ELEGANT SCULPTURE TO STAND IN
WELCOME TO PETERS VILLAGE
Peters Village – the Medway Valley’s newest community – will give visitors an
impressive welcome with an elegant public sculpture on the roundabout at the
entrance to the development.
Work is already under way for the design – an archway reflecting the industrial
and natural heritage of the area – following planning permission by Tonbridge &
Malling Borough Council. Chris Hall, Director for Peters Village developer
Trenport, said: “This landmark will welcome everyone to Peters Village –visitors
and residents alike – and be a monument to major objectives we have adhered to.
“Firstly, our pride in transforming a brownfield site into a desirable new
community that embraces its industrial past, while also nurturing the natural
history of the land, which includes rare species such as the Marsh Mallow Moth,
Great Crested Newt, bats, and several orchids.
“Secondly, a premium look for Peters Village reflected in high standards we set
in planning applications for the housing design and layout of the site.
“This theme also acknowledges the desires of the existing communities of
Wouldham, Burham and Eccles, which are justly proud of their heritage; many
of their forefathers worked at the former Peters Lime & Cement Works and its
quarries, from which Peters Village has arisen. “We are delighted that this was
applauded by Wouldham Parish Council’s comment on the planning application
for the archway design: ‘No objection - we think it is a lovely work of art.’”
Art consultant Samantha Twomey of Art Projects Management Ltd was asked to
mastermind the art element at Peters Village and said: “It was an imaginative
decision by Trenport to take this course – aided and abetted by local opinion –
and an exciting brief for me, allowing new ground to be broken in choice of
materials and design.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL
There was no Council meeting in August. Our next meeting will be on
September 6th in the Village Hall at 7.30pm
FOOTBALL. Thanks to our local Motor Racing team, Crank Racing, we
have been able to purchase new goal posts for the Recreation Ground, the
Parish Council matched their sponsorship to purchase a smaller set for
younger players. After advertising on Facebook we have had a terrific
response from players and coaches alike. The Parish Council is in close
contact with FC Wouldham and are hoping they will be able to put a
changing facility on the Rec so that adult matches can take place. It is an
exciting development for the Village, we are hoping it will lead to much
more youth based activity.
PETERS BRIDGE. Peters Bridge is having its official opening on
September 15th, this is being organized by Trenport Head Office. They are
hoping to have the bridge open to traffic on that day but that will be
dependent on the roadway being finished. There will be a smaller opening
on September 9th when children and adults will have a chance to walk
over the bridge and meet their counterparts from Halling and Snodland
half way across. Numbers are limited so it is invitation only.
WOULDHAM SCHOOL. The new All Saints School has had planning
permission approved. Hopefully this will be opened in September 2017.
There are ongoing discussions with KCC to provide a walkway/cycle path
through the village.
POST OFFICE. We have had sad news about the removal of the Post
Office from the village shop, the Parish Council have been in touch with
the PO to find out what other plans they have for Wouldham, we would
like to thank Jay for all the hard work he has put into the PO whilst he has
had it.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED. If anyone would like to help with planting
of bulbs and other plants in the village this Autumn please contact me.
CCTV. We are sorry this is taking so long, we are making sure we have
the very best system we can get. We are working on it and it will be up as
soon as we know we have the best option.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Welcome back after the summer break. I hope you all had a good summer.
Parking facilities provided by the Parish Council: Please ensure that
all vehicles utilising the parish car parks (Bell Lane, Church Street
and Village Hall) are taxed, MOT, insured and in a road worthy
condition. SORN vehicles should NOT be parked within these areas.
Any vehicles parked and found to be SORN will be reported to the
appropriate authorities for removal. Parking is very restricted within
the village and “Storage” of SORN vehicles is NOT permitted in any
Parish owned car parks.
During July a child’s push-bike (approximate age 5/8 years) was found
and handed in to the Parish Office. If you child has lost a bike, please
contact me on the details below.
We are fully aware of the problems being experienced on New Court
Road with boy racers and anti social behavior. If you witness
anything, please contact the Police on 101. If you feel that there is a
potential for danger of life, then 999 can be called. With the evenings
starting the draw in, please let me know if there are any street lights
inoperative, so I can report to KCC.
Earlier in the year much of the shrubbery was cleared from Pilgrims way
(Split Road). The Parish Council did request that either barriers be erected
at the far end (adjoining Rochester Road from Aylesford) or if not
reflective markers. Both have been declined by KCC due to costs and/or
injury crash history.
Volunteers are being sought who would be prepared to join a
committee to plan fun/music day for Summer 2017. Please contact

Plants to Tempt Butterflies to your Garden
Your pots, window boxes or containers should be in flower and looking
marvellous now and hopefully attracting butterflies so you can log them in
the Big Butterfly Count. Sadly, we have been receiving reports that there
has been a real lack of butterflies seen in gardens so far. Species being
spotted Large and Small Whites, Red Admiral and browns such
as Gatekeeper and Meadow Brownbut the Small Tortoiseshell seems to be
very elusive.
Most of the plants recommended for the campaign, including Shasta
Daisy Leucanthemum x superbum, Catmint Nepeta racemosa and Cranesbill Geranium ‘Rozanne’ will keep flowering throughout August and beyond. The beautiful pink, carmine and white flowers of the annual Cosmos
bipinnatus will keep going until the first frosts.
If you fancy one more go at tempting butterflies to your garden then head
down to your local garden centre to stock up on some additional colourful
perennials. You could create new pots providing late summer to autumn
nectar or just fill sunny gaps in the flowerbeds.
Remember to mix flower shapes – for
example the violet-blue spires of Salvia
nemorosa 'Caradonna' with the large, daisylike flowers of Coneflower Echinacea
purpurea, which come in white and a range
of warm colours.
There are two other plants with long, strong
stems bearing daisy-like flowers with
prominent centres. Sneezeweed
Helenium autumnale and Rudbeckiahave
flowers in various tones of golden-yellow, rich red and mahogany brown
with dark centres.
Tickseed Coreopsis grandiflora has vibrant yellow flowers that glow
when bathed in sunlight. It also looks good alongside dark purple blooms.
If you prefer a pink or lilac palette, then Scabious Scabiosa‘Butterfly
Blue’ has been very popular with butterflies and bees over the summer so
far – it flowers profusely and the slugs tend to leave it alone. It goes well
with the spires of Perennial Wallflower Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’
which, astonishingly, just keeps on flowering for most of the year. Whites
recently and it will keep flowering until September.
18
The lovely pale violet-blue, bell-shaped flowers of Milky Bell FlowerCampanula lactifolia ‘Prichard’s Variety’ attracted Large A well-known
autumn bloom for pollinators is Michaelmas Daisy Aster x frikar
tii 'Mönch', which has masses of lavender-blue flowers with orange
centres. Alternatively chose popular variety Aster 'Little Carlow'.
The succulent Ice Plant Sedum spectabile is another staple butterfly plant
and the large, flat, flower heads, which start off green and turn pink, are
usually popular with Red Admirals. Finally, you could simply have a
dwarf patio Buddleia in a pot. Buddleia davidii ‘Buzz Sky Blue’ should
keep flowering until September or October. It has flowers the same size
as usual Buddleia but only grows to 120cm. Don’t forget to keep watering
your containers or new plants and also to deadhead regularly in order to
encourage further flowering.
Remember to tell us which butterflies you are seeing in your garden
via www.bigbutterflycount.org
WINCHESTER HOUSE NURSING HOME, WOULDHAM
Everyone here at Winchester House have been enjoying the lovely sunshine over
the last couple of months and spending lots of time in the garden and this seems
to have paid off as residents and staff were overjoyed to find out that their
garden has been announced a regional winner of the Community Garden
category for the Barchester in Bloom competition which aims to promote
gardening and to celebrate the beautiful outdoor spaces lovingly cared for by
residents, staff and the local community.
Judges were impressed by the standard of the home’s garden and picked it out as
the top garden for this category in the whole of the South East. As a regional
winner, the garden automatically qualifies for the Barchester in Bloom 2016
national finals. The home will find out whether or not their garden has the best
community garden in the UK at an awards ceremony in October so fingers
crossed!
We also recently travelled to Medway Wharf Marina in Wateringbury to board
the Kingfisher boat for a day on the river where we enjoyed the wildlife and
taking in the beautiful countryside. It was a wonderful day for everyone and
we’d like to thank skipper John and all the volunteers that made our day a truly
special one.
Looking forward to the next coming months, we will be getting a visit from
Nigel Dawson of Informative talks to talk about the Great British Summer and
we’ll also be having lots of fun entering the scarecrow competition run by The
Friends of Wouldham All Saints School.

SEPTEMBER in Your Garden
By all these lovely tokens, September days are here,
with summers best of weather, & Autumns best of cheer’.
Well another lovely summer is now fading, and making way for Autumn. There
have been plenty of opportunities to enjoy the garden this summer, whether that’s
been hosting parties or BBQ’s, or just relaxing in a deckchair on a balmy evening
watching the bees and butterflies about their business.
Now is also a good time to assess the state of any hedges or climbers – ideal to
do from the deckchair. Through the summer a regular clipping helps to keep
hedges neat. However autumn is a good time to plant additional hedging or
replace any patches that might have suffered from die-back, or are looking less
than their best. Climbers will have also put on lots of growth through the season
– and this needs a structure for it to climb up, through or over. Climbers are also
ideal to use as a screen – either if you have an ugly fence or wall that needs
covering, or by using trellis to segregate areas within your garden. Now is the
time to review the structures to make sure they are sturdy and large enough to
carry the plant out over the area. Climbers also help to add height to the garden,
and therefore lifts the eye away from ground level – think about colour, scent and
form to add that extra dimension to your garden as there are many forms to
choose from. There is both winter and summer flowering jasmine and clematis,
or honeysuckles for traditional style planting, or for a more modern twist try
Hydrangea petiolaris or choose an annual climber such as Rhodochiton (Purple
Bell Flower) or Cobaea to create a different backdrop each year.
Despite the drought that comes with the summer weather, shrubs & flowers
continue to perform, but will still benefit from a good water once a week or so as
this helps to ensure that their roots are making their way down into the soil rather
than staying near the surface. It’s also ideal to keep on top of the lawn mowing
and edging to keep the garden looking neat as it passes into autumn.
Other things to be doing this month:
Consider your water harvesting – do you need more water butts etc. to
see you through a dry summer ..??
Continue to water pots and hanging containers, even if it rains
Keep harvesting beans, tomatoes, courgettes, salads and squashes
Keep dead-heading Dahlias, Roses and Penstemons to keep them
flowering for as long as possible
Plant herbaceous perennials in borders whilst the soil is still warm, or
split existing herbaceous plants to make more of your stock.
We have some Wouldham allotment plots available.

BURHAM CHURCH OF ENGLAND
PRIMARY SCHOOL
COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, RESPONSIBILITY, FORGIVENESS, TRUST
We would like to welcome back all of our children and their families for
this new school year and wish a very warm welcome to our new Reception
class and their families who are joining the school.
The end of Term 6 was a busy time for the whole school. At the beginning
of July the PTFA held their annual Summer Fair which although cut short
by the rain, still managed to raise a fantastic £750. Members of the PTFA
have also been running a Gardening Club at school and lots of children
have helped to turn the school garden into an outside space to be proud of
by growing their own flowers and vegetables.
The children all took part in our annual Sports Day and the last week of
term saw the Infants take part in a 'Water Olympics. The Infants enjoyed
an end of term party with the theme of 'Under the Sea', while the Juniors
also took part in some fun activities to celebrate the end of term.
In the absence of Reverend Mike Hayes, the Reverend Dr. Mandy Young
from Snodland conducted the end of term Eucharist. The school was also
inspected by the National Society of Anglican and Methodist Schools and
received a grade of 'Good', with the Inspector saying that 'the school is now
a genuine Christian family'. The Inspector also praised pupils for being
'exceptionally polite, courteous and well behaved'.
To mark the end of their time at primary school, the Year 6 pupils enjoyed
a trip to London for a meal and to see The Lion King. This was paid for by
their Year 6 Enterprise. We also welcomed Year 6 parents for Act of
Worship and lunch on their last day and all Year 6 pupils were given an
autograph book by the PTFA.
At the end of Term 6, children throughout the school were recognised with
certificates for their hard work and achievements, including for 100%
attendance during the year.
Finally, at the end of September we will say goodbye and good luck to Mrs
Nicolaides who is leaving to begin maternity leave.
As always, all updates relating to our school can be found on our website
www.burham.kent.sch.uk If you would like to get involved with our
PTFA please do get in touch [email protected]
