Big Artifacts Bring Big Bids at Huge Three-Day
Architectural Artifacts Auction in Chicago
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
Three days, fifteen-hundred lots, and a million bucks. That about sums up the massive Architectural Artifacts “Spring Cleaning” auction held at their 80,000 square
foot showroom in Chicago on April 5th through the 7th. The firm’s founder Stuart
Grannen decided that after twenty-five years as the Windy
City’s premier architectural salvage company it was out
with the old and in with, well more old stuff already on the
way. There were hundreds of highlights, not the least of a
pair of Leo Lentelli pink granite carvings that ended up
bringing $67,500!

Chicagoland Antique Advertising, Slot Machine &
Jukebox Show Rocs St. Charles, Illinois
Article & photos by Jack Kelly
Although it’s billed as the Chicagoland Antique Advertising, Slot Machine and Jukebox Show, one dealer said,
“It attracts just about anything oddball, rare – and expensive!”
“Sure I forked over $50 for early entry, but it’s worth it,” said one shopper who entered the show during dealer
set-up on Friday, April 5, while more frugal visitors paid $7 to shop on Saturday or Sunday in St. Charles,
Ill., 35 miles west of Chicago.
An rare 1940 Rockola

customers to call in record

Chicago’s Architectural Artifacts Holds First-Ever Million
Dollar Spring Cleaning Auction
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
“Worth the Trip” is a statement that a lot of businesses make, but it
couldn’t be truer than for Chicago’s Architectural Artifacts. Founded in 1987
by Stuart Grannen, the company has grown in the last twenty-five years into
one of the largest architectural salvage enterprises in the Midwest. Their
showroom, located in the historic Ravenswood neighborhood, now encompasses more than 80,000 square feet on three floors of a century-old brick
building that formerly housed one of the world’s largest needle factories.
And Grannen isn’t done yet. The newly-completed Glass Atrium unifies
the structure, and is already a popular venue for local events. It will also

Rare Duck Call Wows
the Appraisers and Brings
$103,650 at Auction
Each year, at the National Antique Decoy and Sporting
Collectibles Show, free identification and appraisals are offered for
anything that is brought to the show. This effort is designed to help
discover those old artifacts that are hiding around the country and
recapture our rich hunting and fishing history. A wide range of
items including artwork, decoys, calls; shotgun shell boxes, fishing items and various outdoor collectibles show up each year for
review by the experts in attendance at the show. 2012 brought in
a wonderful old hand carved duck call that was a gift to Joseph
Nathaniel Whitley, a former top game warden and official in
Arkansas over 100 hundred years ago. It was easy to see that this
item was special as it was uniquely carved on all sides and had the
image of a rattlesnake integrated into the mouthpiece. The call,
carved by J.T. Beckhard around 1890, subsequently sold at auction
for a record $103,650. The diverse number of unique items that are
brought in to the show each year has been growing steadily. Attendees
are always excited to discover that grandpa’s old “stuff” can be so important and
command such a strong following.
The Midwest Decoy Collectors Association is a non-profit organization
whose purpose is to collect and preserve the history of the decoy as original
American folk art. This convention and show is the premier opportunity for the
novice, antique dealer or the experienced collector to network and learn more about
the decoy as functional folk art or to add to their collections. For more information,
please visit midwestdecoy.org
Locomotives. Please view complete list and over 1,000 photos at www.whats4sale.biz.
Additionally the great line of toys will be offered from the estate, something for everyone.
Absentee & phone bids always accepted. No buyers fee.

NEW “Sunday at Sandwich
Antiques Show” ~ Carpi deum!
Seize the day! Opportunity knocks! These were the motivating themes
that have caused a small of group of seasoned antiques dealers to decide to forge a
new indoor-outdoor antiques and collectables market on the beautiful and historic
turf of the Sandwich Fairgrounds in Sandwich, Illinois. Under the banner of Blue
Antique Productions, the group will launch their up-dated version of a monthly
antiques and collectables market on May 12, 2013. These second Sunday markets
during 2013 are planned to be both customer and dealer friendly. With memories of
the glory days of past mega antiques markets at Sandwich in mind, the blue group
will advertise the event and use their contacts and experience as antiques dealers
to give the public and exhibitors a quality effort.
Located west of Sandwich at 1401 Suydam Road, the Sandwich
Fairgrounds is the historic site of the DeKalb County Fair, an event that has been
on-going for 125 years. The extensive grounds include historic buildings and
mature trees that create a park like atmosphere. Visitors will find exhibitors displaying under tents, trees, grandstands, and inside permanent buildings. Hours are 8am4pm. Rain or shine. Early buyers can purchase a ticket and come in as the dealer's
set-up on Saturday and come in early on Sunday.
For a modest $5.00 admission, children 12 and under free, the visitor will
find free parking, food service, ATMs, permanent restroom facilities, and the offerings of quality antiques, collectables, artisans, repurposing, and garden fare. An
added bonus is the ability to visit the many antique malls and shops in the quaint
Sandwich community. For additional information visit our web-site at www.sundayatsadwichantiques.com or call 847-321-1712 or 309-310-3596

Buyers from Around the World Place Their Bets at the
Chicagoland Antique Advertising, Slot Machine & Jukebox Show
Article & Photos by Jack Kelly
One of the youngest dealers came with his parents. The lad was
Nathaniel Warden – age 15 months! The infant’s father and mother, Diane and
Jeff Warden, displayed a truckload of vintage pinball and arcade games priced
from $1,000 and up. The family, from Crystal Lake, IL, has set up at St. Charles
for more than 10 years. Shoppers who stopped to admire and play the noisy
machines also spotted young Nathaniel, sometimes snoozing near by, seemingly
not bothered by the action. “He’s an old pro,” chuckled his Dad, Jeff, who added,
“he just takes it all in and falls asleep when he gets tired.”
Older kids stopped to admire the restored 1958 Murray Atomic Missile
pedal car airplane priced at $3,000 by Northland Jukeboxes and Restoration Co.
of North Branch, MN. Parents stopped to “ooh and ahh” over the dealer’s 1955
Seeburg V-200 jukebox with 24 k gold plate trim. The dazzlingly restored
machine carried one price tag of $10,000 -- and another tag marked “SOLD.”
“It’s one of only a dozen known,” said John Papa of National Jukebox
Exchange, Mayfield, N.Y., as he pointed out a 1940 Rockola Mystic Music
Jukebox that allowed the customer to speak into a built-in telephone-type mouthpiece to talk to a live operator who would play the reqested record via the juke
from a remote location. The floor model light-up device was priced at $15,000.
People also stopped at the booth to gawk at his 9’ tall Victorian lady reproduction 1907 Mills perfume dispenser. The fully operational device could be operated for one penny -- after you counted out $18,500.
“That’ll take your breath away,” gushed one shopper, pointing to a deep
richly colored fancy wood and ornate castings 1910 Mills Double Chicago floor
model slot machine with built in music box. The rare machine, which played at
the drop of a coin, for $125,000 and was shown by Frank Zygmunt Jr. of
Westmont, IL. Several dozen other old mechanical slot machines filled the dealers booth with prices of $500 to $125,000.
If restored soda pop vending machines were your desire, several booths
offered many choices. Jim and Diana Rud of Sandwich, IL, had one of the
largest selections of fully restored examples priced from $3,800 to $9,000.
A countertop Motorola Radio neon advertising sign priced at $1,300
looked comforable above vintage radios offered by “Tonka Ty” of Glenn Ellyn,
IL. Two 1940s Fada radios could play tunes for $575 and $595 each. The dealer also offered a 1940s Wyandotte pressed steel toy Easter Egg hauling truck,
painted pastel Easter colors meant “to attract girls” tagged at $295.
Some folks don’t know the famous Caillie Slot Machine Co. of Detroit
also manufactured outboard motors. Dealer B.J. Pawlaczyk of Au Gres, Mich.,
brought two examples to the show. A fully restored 1909 2-horse Waterman
could be put on display, or put to use, for $20,000, while a 1931 Model 79 was
priced at $1,500.
Las Vegas collectables both old and new, filled the booth of Joe and
Antonette Rabito of Lake Zurkich, IL. An 8x10 inch framed 1984 Caesar’s
Palace stock certificate was priced at $195, while a 1980s Stardust $1 casino chip

now cost $49. The couple make regular trips to Las Vegas to buy. When asked
if they also gambled on those buying trips, Joe stated, “Oh yeah!”
It was a 14-hour drive to Chicagoland for first-time dealer Merlyn
Collings and helpers of Brevard, N.C. Catching many an eye at her booth was a
fully restored 1950s amusement park Dodgem car priced at $3,000. Others
checked out and listened to an all-original Wurlitzer 850 jukebox that played two
dozen 78 rpm selections for $15,000.
The new exhibitor gushed, “it was a great time.”
Show dealer and author, Bill Howard of Akron, Ohio, showed off a 16”
tall cast metal full figure Roman character cigar tip cutter with lamp that could
trim and light your smokes for $2,700.
Howard said he’s working on a follow-up to his “Every Picture Tells a
Story,” a 2006 sold-out hardcover book about coin operated devices. The new
volume will contain “300 pages with updates and new items,” he said and is
expected to be ready in mid-2014.
Foreign buyers are regular visitors at the show, with some now making
it a family affair. Ben Franse has been traveling to the show “for many many
years” from the Netherlands, assisted by his son Sargon. The pair filled two ship
containers with jukeboxes, Coke machines and other vintage items.
Franse operates a store and museum titled “Bennie’s Fifties” with the slogan, “Treasure Keeper of the Fifties.”
First time show visitors Josh Fee, 22 and girlfriend Maddie Stelter, 21
drove in from Niles, Mich.,and both purchased vintage counter top vending
machines.
“I’d love to come back,” said Josh, while Mattie added, “next time we’ll
bring more money.”
Although many attend the twice-per-year event to buy and sell, it’s also
a gathering place for collectors to complete transactions made during the year.
The next Chicagoland Antique Advertising, Slot Machine and Jukebox
Show will be held in St. Charles, IL, Nov. 15- 17.
Dealers can get information from co-promoter Bob Traynoff at 847-2449263. Show information also is available from co-promoter Kevin Greco at 815353-1593 and at www.chicagolandshow.com.
Taking time for “Coca-Cola
toast” to a successful event
were show co-promoters (front
and left right) Kevin and Dawn
Greco, , along with Bob and
Penny Traynoff and son Sam
age 16. The celebration was
made at the booth of J & R
