2015 Annual Report - Urology Care Foundation
Advancing
Urologic Research and
Education to
IMPROVE PATIENTS’
LIVES.
Letter from the Board of Directors
Dear Friend of the Foundation,
Mission
As we reflect on this past year, we are pleased to present to you our 2015–2016 annual report calendar. We are
honored to share our growth and accomplishments this year, made possible by the loyalty of our committed
partners and donors. In the past year, we have expanded and ensured the sustainability of our Research
Scholar Program through the creation of 14 new endowed awards, contributed by generous supporters who are
making a lasting impact through the advancement of research. Our website, UrologyHealth.org, garnered more
than 5.4 million visitors, positioning us as a reliable and influential go-to resource on urologic health for both
large national and international audiences.
Realizing our website’s capacity to reach millions of patients, health care professionals and caregivers
encouraged us to create a more patient-friendly and accessible version of our website. In May 2015, we
launched our newly enhanced website, featuring information on more than 100 urologic conditions. The
website is now an even more valuable and reliable tool for those suffering with urologic disease. It allows us
to reach a vast audience with critical messages and patient education information on a variety of urologic
concerns for patients. In 2016, we are launching a campaign to establish a Patient Education Endowment Fund
in five areas of urologic health; Prostate, Pediatric, Bladder, Renal/Kidney and Sexual/Reproductive. Our goal
is to engage the public and the urology community as we expand our messages of urologic health and wellness.
In 2015, we celebrated our 40-year history of funding early-career investigators in urologic research. Since
1975, we have supported and ignited the careers of over 600 researchers, totaling over $24 million in awards
and scholarships. As we contemplated the significance of the longevity and growth in our research grant
programs, a theme of “40-for-40” was suggested—funding 40 awards and scholarships during our 40th year.
The Foundation is extremely proud that we exceeded that mark! In 2015, the Foundation provided 42 awards
and scholarships, totaling more than $1.2 million in research support, including 14 new Research Scholar
awards, the flagship research training program of the Foundation. During this calendar cycle, the Research
Scholar Program received 37 percent more applications than the previous year. Our early-career investigator
training programs and awards are a highly regarded and sought-after opportunity for young scientists to
begin a strong career in urologic research, mentored by leaders in the field. We are incredibly grateful for
your generosity, which has helped grow and sustain this program. We look forward to the bright future of the
Foundation as a dedicated leader in advancing urologic research and education to improve patients’ lives.
The Urology Care Foundation is the
world’s leading nonprofit urological
health foundation—and the official
foundation of the American Urological
Association. We partner with
physicians, researchers, health care
professionals, patients, caregivers,
families and the public to support and
improve the prevention, detection
and treatment of urological diseases
through research and education.
Vision
To support urological research, and to
be the premier provider and resource
for the most current, comprehensive
and reliable urologic health information
for patients and the public.
Together, we are ensuring the future of urologic health.
With gratitude,
Richard A. Memo, MD
Chair

Research grants are awarded to institutions and
individuals throughout the United States through the
American Urological Association (AUA) Office of Research.
The AUA Office of Research has a stringent peer-review
progress that reflects the highest standards of the National
Institutes of Health. Each year, the Foundation grants more
than $1 million in research funding to the AUA Office of
Research in support of training awards, salary stipends
and fellowships to promising investigators. Our awards
span the career spectrum of research—medical students,
residents, post-doctoral and post-resident fellows and
independent investigators.
Education expenditures include our efforts to raise
awareness of urologic health through national public
health campaigns and publications. The Foundation’s
online and print materials are based on information
from the AUA’s Clinical Guidelines. Our patient-friendly
educational tools are designed to promote communication
between patients and their health care providers. We also
publish Urology Health extra ®, a quarterly magazine.

Patient Education Endowment Fund
Building a Healthier Future
The Urology Care Foundation is committed to a Patient Education
Endowment Fund to ensure that patients have access to the
most reliable information concerning their urologic health and
treatments. Endowment gifts are the most lasting and powerful
resources a donor can give. Because they provide a steady stream
of income from permanently invested funds, endowment gifts
keep on growing and giving from one generation to the next.
The Foundation is interested in partnering with individuals like
you who share the same passion for our mission and core values.
The Patient Education Endowment Fund campaign, launching
in 2016, will help us achieve these goals and provide sustained
financial resources to keep patient education and resources
current and accessible to the millions of patients and their
caregivers impacted by a urologic disease.
Campaign Goal
Establish a $7.5 million Patient Health Education
Endowment made up of five $1.5 million fund
portfolios in the following key areas:

The Urology Care Foundation has been a committed leader in advancing urologic research for over 40
years. The Foundation provides significant funding for its early-career investigator awards programs

Education
This past year, dozens of corporate, foundation and association donors helped to make a significant difference in the lives of
millions of Americans diagnosed with urologic diseases through their support of the Urology Care Foundation’s research and
education programs. We are grateful for their continued generosity and commitment to urology.

2015 Care Gala
The Urology Care Foundation had its inaugural Care
Gala on Friday, May 15, 2015 for a sold-out crowd at
the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. The
Gala raised over $255,000 to support the Urology Care
Foundation’s mission to support and improve the prevention,
detection and treatment of urologic diseases through
research and education.
“It was a fun night! I saw a lot of people I knew;
there was good entertainment with good friends.”
–Carl Olsson, MD
Leave a Legacy
The Urology Care
Foundation offers a wide
range of vehicles to invest
in our mission and leave
a legacy to impact the
future of urology. With a
planned or legacy gift, you
will make a difference in
urologic patients’ lives,
present and future.
