Home Health vs. In Home Care
The distinctions between Home Health Care and Non-Medical
In-Home Care are important for patients and their families to
understand. The following information is provided to help
educate consumers and caregivers about the costs and benefits of each.
Home Health Care is usually covered by Medicare or
insurance plans whereas Non-Medical In-Home Care is usually not.
In order to be eligible for home health care coverage:
Patient must be homebound
Care must be ordered by a physician
Care must be provided by a state-licensed, Medicare-certified agency
providing skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech
therapy, social and nutritional services.
Home Health Care has two main components. The first is
comprehensive medical assessments and treatments, including
effective symptom control, in order to reach immediate and
short-term clinical goals after an illness, hospitalization or surgery. The
second is the education and training that allows patients to
integrate new self-management skills into their daily lifestyle.
Both are
important in the recovery process and future health of the
patient.
Non-Medical In-Home Care includes personal care, homemaker,
and
companionship services. These services do not require a
physician’s order. It is paid for by Long Term Care policies,
Private Pay,
Medicaid Waiver programs, Veteran Affairs programs, Options
programs and Workers' Compensation.
