UPCOMING SERMON SERIES
August/September 2016
Beginning on Sunday, August 21, we’ll be starting a new
worship series on the topic of … PURPOSE. Several
years ago now, Pastor Rick Warren (America’s
Pastor) wrote a best-selling book (based on scripture)
called “A Purpose Driven Life.” That’s where the title
of this series comes from … and based on scripture,
with commentary from Pastor Warren, we’ll be
learning together about God’s purpose for each and
every one of our lives. So, do you know why you’re
here? Let’s find out together, shall we?. Individual
messages for August/September will be:

“Designed With and For a Purpose” – Isaiah 26:3

“Designed for Pleasure” – Isaiah 61:3; 29:13;
Psalm 147:11; Rom. 12:1a

“Formed for God’s Family” – Eph. 1:5

“Created to Be Like Jesus” – Rom. 8:29

“Shaped for Serving God” – Eph. 2:10

“Made for a Mission” – Acts 20:24
Come join us for this very important teaching about God’s
plan for each and every one of our lives!
“LOVING GOD LIKE THIS…”
Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your
mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love
your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on
these two commandments.” – Matthew 22:37-40 (NLT)
Dear members & friends of Trinity UMC,
You’ve heard the phrase, I’m sure, that goes “Everything hinges on this!” In other words,
this—whatever ‘this’ is—is going to be pivotal to the future—to our future. It’s that important.
Last month, I introduced—in written form—what I believe to be God’s vision for this church.
Nothing real spectacular (as in ‘out of the ordinary’). Nothing that isn’t biblical. Nothing that
would be contrary to our historic Christian faith, as we know it. However, when God gives a
vision and God’s people receive it, from that point forward … ‘everything hinges on this!’ Let me
remind you what that very simple vision was that I introduced last month (and you can always
review this on the back of the bulletin):



Love – both God and people (Jesus’ two commandments he spoke of above…)
Grow – intentional growth as disciples of Jesus Christ
Serve – just like Jesus did, his life as our model for service
And one of the most important ways we’re going to ‘love’ God … is by loving others. Jesus said
(John 13:35, NLT): “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
That needs to be our witness … to our community and beyond. So, today we’re going to start a
conversation about how we’re going to love others—especially those God sends our way to care
for…
Let me ask you a question: Have you ever considered the difference between a visitor and a
guest? Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But the distinction can make all the difference in the world
with regard to how people feel about Trinity UMC—whether they want to come back for a
second time! I learned a lot about how we’re supposed to love those God sends our way
through the people at Disney (“Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service”) and
basically, it’s this. A visitor is someone who pops into your life unexpectedly and who you’re not
necessarily prepared to receive. A guest is someone you expect to show up at a certain time
and who you are prepared to receive. So, who do you think might feel more welcome coming to
Trinity UMC—a visitor or a guest?
Too often, we think of those who come to join us for worship for the first time as visitors—those
we didn’t expect and are not ready for (and they feel it, if that’s the case).
What we need to be doing is to think of those who come to join us for
worship at Trinity as our guests—true gifts from God (and they’ll feel that,
too). In doing so, we’ll be treating them as if we expected them all
along—ready to receive them with open arms and welcoming spirits. This
is one way we’re going to ‘love’ as God has called us to love—that the
world might know that we are his disciples! I’ll speak more to this as we
begin our new school year—next month… Are you ready?
See you at the ‘guest house’,
Pastor Rom

CONFIRMATION UPDATE
Just a reminder that when Pastor Rom moved to
Trinity UMC, Lomira, one year ago, adjustments
were made in the traditional confirmation program. It
was decided that confirmation would be moved to
participants being in their sophomore/junior years of
high school and to do this every other year starting
fall of 2018. Instead of a 2-year program, this will be
a one year program where participants will be in
class for about 13 weeks in the fall, but really take
time to ‘try on the church’ for the entire school year.
At the end of confirmation, an opportunity will be given to be confirmed (an important step in the process
toward membership) sometime around Easter. Membership itself, however, will be reserved for those 18
years or older. If parents or members have any questions about these changes, you’re invited to contact
Pastor Rom at the church office—(920) 269-4411 or
email at [email protected]. Thank you!
The Adult Choir will
begin their rehearsals on Wednesday
Sept.14th. Anyone is
welcome and encouraged to become a
part of this wonderful
musical group.

Choir Director, for
more information.

Gwen’s Pen…
Pictured is Gwen with her bike in front of their home in Tokyo in 1934
“No! No!” Don't ride into the azaleas,” Dad shouted.
My attention was on staying upright, but I heard him. No, I
wouldn't ride into the huge clumps of brilliant blooms and lush
leafy branches filling the corner of the compound in Tokyo.
At breakfast that morning, Dad had suggested (another word
would be “decreed”) that I was eight years old and it was time for
me to learn to ride a bike. He would teach me as soon as my simple
chores were done.
The dishes cleared, my bed made, and the bathroom sink
scrubbed, I went hesitantly, but dutifully, to the study where Dad
sat at his desk, papers and ledgers obscuring its glass-covered surface.
“I guess I'm ready,” I said in a tiny voice quite unlike my
normal boisterous tones. From the shed, we took the bike, (a handme-down from the neighbor) with its scooped out bar for girls. I
pushed it along the walk at the side of the house and out between
two palm trees on either side of the front walk, then out beyond the
hedge. In the common area, unpopulated by any would-be spectators, were cinder paths, a circular mound, and grassy flats, which
offered plenty of space for the novice rider.
In the conventional manner of teaching the activity, Dad
held the rack behind the bike seat to steady me. He gave me a gentle start and hung on as I peddled. The bike wobbled, but I was
confident Dad would not let me fall on those rough cinders that
would have to be picked out of my knees with a tweezers.
This bicycling procedure worked fairly well as you might expect ….until Dad felt I was ready to fly on my
own. When he let go of the bike, I realized I was soaring solo as I headed for the azaleas. I knew I had to turn the
handlebars to avoid disaster to both botany and humanity. But, try as I would, my body would not obey my brain
and I continued a straight course toward disaster.
“No! No! Don't ride into the azaleas,” Dad shouted, telling me something I already knew. The harder I tried
to change my course, the more impossible it became until natural forces resulted in a heap of bicycle, azaleas, and
me.
Running to me, Dad picked me up, brushed me off, then sorted branch from bike. “Ready to try again?” he
asked. But it was not a question.
Read Paul's confession and solution in Romans 7:15-25,
I found both “The Living Bible” and “The Message” to be the most helpful interpretations of this particular
reading.
We would just like to extend a big thank you
to all those who helped to make the Mission
Trip here at TUMC possible. Including those
who gave their time and those who gave in
so many other ways from food donations to
financial assistance. The team accomplished
a great amount of work and still managed to
have fun and to enjoy worship/devotions
while doing it. Materials for the work were purchased with funds
from the Mission Trip Fund and an $1,100 donation was made
from the Mission Brat Fry held earlier this year and the Youth Mission Brat Fry that was hosted during the Mission Trip here at the
church. Thanks again to everyone who helped in even the smallest way, it was all so greatly appreciated.

CEMETERY ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES PRICE INCREASE
The Trinity Cemetery Association has announced an increase in the cost of purchasing cemetery
lots at all three of the locations, the first increase since January of 2005. Increased costs of perpetual care maintenance and lower returns on perpetual care investments, along with higher administrative costs and increased land values are primarily responsible for the need. New prices will become
effective as of January 1, 2017:
For members of Trinity Church, lot prices will be increased to $600.00 per lot from the current
$300.00, including perpetual care.
For non-members, lot prices will be increased to $1200.00 per lot from the current $600.00,
including perpetual care.

Seminary Intern to Work at Trinity UMC for 2016-17 School Year
Several weeks ago, now, Pastor Rom received a phone call from the District Superintendent—Rev. Sue
D’Alessio—asking if Trinity would be interested in hosting a seminary student as an intern during the upcoming school year. Right up front, the D.S. advised that the expense of this program had already been
covered by the Conference. So that would not be a concern. Pastor Rom, Jane, and Teresa Amerling
agreed to meet with the potential intern and make a final decision from there.
On Wednesday, May 25, a lunch meeting took place and we all met with Seongmin Kim—currently a
seminary student at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois—though living in the
parsonage at North Fond du Lac with her husband, who is the pastor there, and their 12 year old daughter. Having met Seongmin once before at a District Committee on Ministry meeting, this very personal
meeting in Lomira sealed the deal … and we agreed to host Seongmin as a field education ministry site
for the upcoming school year. Following is a short bio on Seongmin:
Seongmin Kim was born in the Republic of Korea and grew up in Chun-cheon—a small but famous
lakeside city. In February 2001, she finished a Bachelor of Theology degree from Methodist Theological
University in Seoul, Korea and a Master of Theology degree in 2004 as well. While in seminary, Seongmin volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, a youth worship band leader, a Bible study group teacher,
and served for children's ministry later. Seongmin was married to Rev. Sukhyun “Tommy” Jung in 2003;
they have a daughter, Esther M. Jung who was born in 2004.
Pictured left: Seongmin Kim
Pictured below: Seongmin Kim, her husband
Rev. Sukhyun “Tommy” Jung and their daughter Esther
Following God's plan, Seongmin came to the United States in 2003 and has attended Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. She’s been working on her Masters of Divinity (MDiv) program
since 2015. Before Seongmin and her family came to Wisconsin, they served The Korean Methodist
Church of Leavenworth, Kansas—a multi-racial & multi-cultural congregation—for 7 years.
Please join Pastor Rom, the staff, and the leadership of Trinity UMC in welcoming Seongmin Kim to work
at Trinity UMC throughout the upcoming school year. Though Seongmin may be helping in a variety of
ministry areas, one project she will be about this year will be to help form a ministry care team. Seongmin
will be personally introduced to the congregation during a Sunday worship service in September, so
please watch for this exciting announcement!

Director of Christian Education – Trinity UMC
It is with much gratitude that we first thank Heidi Zingsheim for her work as our Director of Christian Education
for the 2015-16 school year. Heidi has accomplished a great deal in her short time of directing our Christian education program—especially through the youth website (http://trinityumclomirayouth.weebly.com) and our entry into the world of Facebook, both great communication tools to keep in touch with youth and parents. Also,
Heidi has done an excellent job in keeping our main bulletin boards (by parking lot entrance) up to date and exciting to view! She has used her love of photography to better this department, as well as her teaching/leadership
skills in working with our middle school youth in particular. Thanks, Heidi, for an incredible year, for your energy and leadership!
And along with this thank you to Heidi, we also welcome Jessica Marschie as our new Director of Christian Education here at Trinity UMC – Lomira. With the endorsement of our Staff-Parish Relations Committee, Pastor
Rom has asked Jessica to step in and fill these rather large shoes as we start the upcoming school year. Both Jessica and Pastor Rom are looking at this as a time to reevaluate our Christian Education program, how it will line
up with God’s vision for Trinity (Love, Grow, Serve), and what changes need to be made in the future to benefit
both students and teachers—all while accomplishing our main goal of making Christ known to our children and
youth. Thank you, Jessica, for your willingness to step up to the plate at this time!
