The Passion of Christ An outdoor worship experience Life. Death. Victory. March 25 & 26, 2016 7:30 PM At the corner of H.G. Trueman Road and Cove Point Road in Lusby The Passion of Christ An outdoor worship experience March 25 & 26 7:30 PM Lusby, Maryland Soli Deo Gloria Directed by Andy Rogers Based on the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John The Passion of Christ An Outdoor Worship Experience Tonight’s presentation will follow Jesus through the last week of his life here on Earth. The drama is based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, found in the Bible. One of the advantages of live theater is that it allows the audience to participate in the production in a way that is impossible in a movie. Please follow the program notes for scenes 3, 12, & 16 to see how we would like you to join with us. Scene 1: Jesus dines at the home of Simon the Leper outside of Jerusalem. Scenes 2 and 3: Jesus enters Jerusalem. This is traditionally celebrated in churches as Palm Sunday—the Sunday before Easter. People shouted “Hosanna” meaning “Save us now.” They were welcoming Jesus as the long expected Messiah. *We encourage audience members to join in the joyful welcoming of Jesus as he rides into Jerusalem. If a cast member takes you by the hand, feel free to join them on stage.* Scene 4: Jesus is at the temple in Jerusalem. Scene 5: Jesus meets with the Pharisees (religious leaders). The religious leaders continue to question Jesus’ authority. Scene 6: A plot develops to kill Jesus as Judas meets with the Pharisees. Scene 7: Jesus continues to teach in the Garden with His Disciples. Scene 8: Jesus dines with his disciples in the upper room. This is most often referred to as the Last Supper. It is believed that they are celebrating part of Passover. It is here that the tradition of Communion was born. Scene 9: Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane. Scene 10: Jesus is at the home of the High Priest—his “trial” begins. Scene 11: Jesus is on trial. There is an opportunity for him to be released as a prisoner is customarily freed during Passover. Scene 12: Jesus stands trial before Pilate. *Please join in with the crowd calling for Jesus to be crucified. Jesus didn’t die simply because of the will of people long ago. Whenever we sin, we are calling for Jesus to be put to death again.* Scene 13: THE VIA DOLOROSA -Literally translated, “Way of Suffering.” Jesus travels to the cross. Scene 14: Judas meets again with the Pharisees. Scene 15: THE CRUCIFIXION -Jesus is hung on a cross. This was the Roman “electric chair.” While a violent act, the cross has become a symbol of God’s great love for humanity. Scene 16: THE RESURRECTION -Mary and others gather at Jesus’ tomb days after his death. *Join us all in the joy we feel that Jesus did rise from the dead.* Music Shout To God Were You There? This is the seminal event in all of history. In his brief walk among us, Jesus taught us much. He pointed out that true religion is much more than outward appearances, and that giving up one's own desires is the only way to move forward with a life pleasing to God, and, ultimately, pleasing to the one living it. At the end of his earthly walk, he was offered as the ultimate and pure sacrifice for our sins, then rose from death to new life. We who follow him are promised that his atoning death covers our sins and that it is for us He died. Moreover, because he rose from the dead, so may we also. This story has been told over and over again in Christian churches, passed on much like the Jewish Passover Feast, which foreshadowed Jesus, is told again and again, passing down to our children how God freed us from slavery to sin. We have performed versions of this play at St. Paul UMC over the 20+ years I have lived in Lusby. In 2006, the last time we performed it indoors, I began to think, “How would anyone outside these brick walls ever know of this story, ever even know we were telling it, let alone the promise it holds for them?” God laid on my heart a desire to perform this outside. In the Spring of 2008, God showed me that this corner was the perfect place to do it and I briefly approached our church worship committee to see if they would support it. In addition, He made it clear that He wanted something more. This story does not belong to just one church or one sect of Christianity. It is the root of it all. If this story is not true, then there is no sense to anything else we profess. Jesus told us before he died that "They will know you are Christians by the love you have for one another." He was calling this verse not only to my mind but to other Christians in Southern Maryland. To make this work for The Passion of Christ, though, I understood that the play itself had to be too big for one church to perform. If we were going to present the story in a meaningful way, we also had to make things plain. To that end, Jennie Rose Pinkowski and I sat down to rewrite the script, adding scenes, improving others, always endeavoring to keep true to the scriptures. Finally, in January 2009, I went back to the church leadership and asked their support to actually do this production. That first year four churches actively supported the program and members of 13 churches participated. In nine weeks, start to finish, God found the individuals needed to pull the show together. We want you to leave knowing a couple of things. First, Jesus did not die 2000 years ago because of the some “bad” people back then. He died for us and because of us as much as any other humans that have ever existed. Second, because of Jesus you and I are free. Support our Haiti Trip in June 2015 You can support our team going to Merger, Haiti, for a week in June. This year will have several youth with us, along with members of several other churches. The team will be working with the children of Ecole Guerny Filostin Primary School and continuing construction on the medical clinic. Pastor David and Pastor Jerome Jones of Mt Calvary UMC will be working with pastors from the surrounding region. Contributions are greatly appreciated. Paint, electrical wire, high temperature mortar, and steel are on our wish list for this trip’s construction projects. All contributions will go 100% toward our efforts to work with the Institute of Grace for the people of Haiti. Items may also be donated for us to take with us. Sturdy tennis or dress shoes, memory sticks, mp3 players, cell phones (which use sim cards), tablets, and e-readers (all with chargers) are great donations. Donations can be dropped at the church office. But please do not buy things for us to take, as cash is more efficient for us. The team will host a Dinner April 29th at the church as a fellowship and fundraiser event for the trip. Contributions can be sent to St Paul UMC, 11000 H.G. Trueman Rd, Lusby, MD, 20657. Please designate the gift “Haiti Trip.” Our brothers and sisters in Haiti will be blessed by your support. Pastor David CROP Walk Saturday Morning May 16th This is your chance to fight hunger. We trust that you will enjoy this presentation of the Passion of Christ as we explore His Life, Death, and Victory. Whether you feel like you know this story backwards and forwards or you’ve never heard it before, we want you to know that this story was written for YOU—that Christ’s passion was for YOU! One of the most recognizable Scripture verses is John 3:16—whether it is on a poster at a football game or recited by children in Sunday School, you have likely heard it before. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” We’ve heard this verse so often that we breeze through it without any thought. God died for the world, but what does that mean for me? We fail to realize that it wasn’t just for some mass of humanity that God sent his Son, instead it was for us as individuals—for me and for you. “For God so loved me...For God so loved YOU that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Try inserting your name in this verse and know that God would have sent Jesus if it were only you on this earth. You have just witnessed a dramatic portrayal of the passion (the suffering) of Jesus—Jesus’ life showed us how to live and live abundantly. Jesus’ death paid for our sin. Jesus’ victory over death gives us hope eternal. Jesus offers this all to us as a gift. Please don’t wait another second to accept that gift, open it, and start living the abundant life Christ has planned for us all. 1 Corinthians 2:9 "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him." Now they see, now they hear, and now they know... LIFE. DEATH. VICTORY.
