Dulverton Voice Issue 36 April 2016 Free Welcome to issue 36 Again a mixed issue, no Mathew Meets but we are starting a series on “Meet a local Business” we would like to know who you would like us to invite. On this page the story of a local “Hero”, and a bit later on about Joyce Burton, do you remember her and what she did? We will be covering the effect of all road closures on our Town in the next issue, and would welcome your comments to include. We hope you find this month’s Dulverton Voice of interest. 25 years ago on the 21st October 1991, Dave Thomas popped home from work and found Chrissie in and out of consciousness. Luckily, being a retained firefighter, he knew what to do, and his quick action saved her life. Chrissie, who had two children Becky 5 and Dean 4, was in a coma for 6 weeks and when she came round she suffered from epilepsy. In the last 25 years she has worked tirelessly fund raising for a range of Dulverton Clubs, have you tried to get passed her when she is selling raffle tickets? Many people have helped her with her fund raising for the Epilepsy Society, in recent times the Co-op has been very supportive. We have just learnt she has been awarded “The Epilepsy Hero for 2016” congratulations and richly deserved. Also The Queen has invited her to the Queen’s Birthday Lunch in the Mall, which will be a great occasion for those who have given so much in helping others. Chrissie is so proud and she wants to thank all her friends in our town who have helped her over the years a special thanks to husband David. Our picture shows Chrissie next to another famous Exmoor Lady - Lorna Doone Watch this space If you would like to advertise in The Voice, please contact us at [email protected] or by post to 4 Jury Road, TA22 9DU. 1 STANBURY’S Copy for next Issue (May 2016) By the 15.4.16 53 High Street, Dulverton (01398 323545) (top of the town - next to the petrol station & car showroom) How to Contact us E mail:[email protected] Website:- www.dulvertonvoice.co.uk Small electrical goods Table lamps cleaner Shades By post - Dulverton Voice 4 Jury Road TA22 9DU bags etc. Electrical Lightbulbs of Accessories, Disclaimer Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the information in this magazine, however no liability can be accepted for loss/damage or injury caused by errors or omissions from the information given. Mark Weston, one of the candidates for the Commissioner Job, asked to visit Dulverton so he could hear first-hand from local people the issues that affected them. Mark was shown around Dulverton by our 2 WSDC Councillors and met with local residents, shopkeepers and talked about our issues. Few who lived in our town in the early part of this century didn’t know Joyce Burton, who lived at 5 Church Lane and let cottages 3 and 4 to young people so they could get started on the housing ladder. Yes by this time 3 cottages were run down but they provided a home her and some young towns people. under the control of All Saints. In her later years she received support from many, with Hazel Peck leading the way. In September 2011 the cottages were ready and the first two young tenants moved in to much local and diocesan press coverage. They were the lucky ones almost 30 couples had applied. When she died Hazel and Daphne Appleby (a previous Rectors Wife) were 2 of the executors and except for a few small bequests she left her estate to All Saints Church and it was clear she hoped that the cottages would be used in the same way. The executors spent much time ensuring the cottages were clearly kept A large amount of work was required to bring the cottages up to a good standard and whilst Joyce had also left the Church some money if was not enough for the work and to give the cottages gardens, so it was agreed to sell number 5. Since then the cottages have been well used and the tenants have move up the housing ladder as hoped. We understand that the Parochial Church Council is proposing to sell these cottages, which bring them an income. Their rationale was clearly set out in the paper issued with the Parish Magazine – “All Saints 5 year plan for Mission Sustainability and improvement” if you have not seen a copy I am certain the Church Wardens or a member of the PCC or The Rector will give you a copy. These cottages are different to Number 1 Church lane which has been the church’s for many years and 1 Church Walk which is owned by the Gardiner Trust. The need is still there to help today’s young people, so what good does it do to sell these cottages on the open market. We make no comment but the following was made by someone who has now moved away but worked hard to provide what they and others felt was needed. “We left them a heritage. They are selling off the family silver, sadly”. We have had a lot of comments which have contributed to the writing of this article, all which agree with the sentiment above, we would welcome your Comments. Our pictures show work on the cottages and a happy Our pictures shows a happy group with the first tenants. group with the first tenants. 3 and marketing, future planning etc. Who inspires you - I suppose it would be Steve Jobs. He had an idea, he stuck with it, he told people what they wanted (when they didn’t know they wanted it!) he did have a darker side but he was an inspiration. How do you generate new ideas - Regards to design, I don’t know is the honest answer, I just play with ideas till something happens that I like. Regarding the business don’t stick to the norm, I also look at what other people are doing/needing. I often try introducing new services, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. If you had a chance to start over what would you do differently - I would acknowledge I need to know more in certain areas. Have the confidence to stick to my guns! If you were to give someone starting a business advice what would it be - Be prepared to change. Business is like crazy paving. You think you have planned how to get from A to B but you find the path is not so straight. You have to be prepared to change. For example, I recently was offered an opportunity to co-produce and manage the Exmoor News, this may lead onto other areas for growth. What makes you happy - Being creative. Being with people I love and animals. If you were an animal, what would you like to be - An otter, happy on land and in the water. What do you do to relax - Watch West Wing on box set! - Art, painting, reading. Is there anywhere you would like to go - I would love to go into space but am claustrophobic! What 5 persons alive or dead, would you invite to dinner - Oscar Wilde, David Attenborough, Billy Connolly, Spike Milligan and Queen Elizabeth I. What got you into the business - I trained as a graphic artist in an ad agency and when computers and desk top publishing came along I was hooked. I also enjoy learning anything about I.T. which means it broadens my capabilities. What gives you most satisfaction in your working life - Happy customers. They say “Customer is king” – it’s so true. What motivates you - It’s not money I can say that. I think its being creative, solving problems, being your own boss. What challenges do you face - Running a small business you have to be a Jack of all trades, any try not to be master of none. It can be a challenge (which I enjoy) but can involve things you prefer not to do. There is never enough time. What 3 key elements do you need to start/run a business - Enthusiasm, flexibility and an eye for opportunities. If you had a magic wand - Admin would get done by itself! What three things do you need to be a success - Is what you do viable. Find out what your customers want. See if there is a way to improve what you do. What changes would you like to see in the next five years - I would love to see more opportunity for small business on Exmoor to stimulate jobs and growth. This includes better communications, 4G mobile signals, fast broadband for all across Exmoor, good transport systems and roads, more affordable business premises. From a sales point of view, higher profile for all businesses on Exmoor. Grants are well and good, but they have to be paid back. An easy path to find pertinent information on subjects such as cost effective recruitment, training, consultancy, premises, IT, sales Our Picture shows Claire at work discussing another magazine Thank You Claire – If any readers would like us to ask any local business to be featured please let us know and we will ask them. 4 Where in Dulverton would you start If you wanted to be in a professional film? Well how about looking in the Tantivy window! Yes, where a card was asking for film extras for a period film to be shot on Exmoor. The Auditions were at the Wellington Hotel in Minehead and 100s turned up, a real cross section of humanity, queuing right out of the door for most of the day. After 2 hours of queuing, you were given a form asking a range of questions, your clothes sizes? happy to have your hair cut? Can you ride? and so on. Of the 100’s there they were only looking for about 30 or so, so when all the info had been gathered and some pictures taken it was off home. Two months go past and the phone rings; it’s the production company, still interested? yes, well can you be at Porlock Methodist Hall at 8.30am on Sunday? The hall was full of clothes, shoes etc.so, dressed to suit it was on to makeup. After 2 hours you are transformed and so to Porlock Weir which has been transformed into a 19th century fishing port. The filming starts with take after take, the extras were well looked after but 5 days of filming with make up each morning is very tiring, but fun as well. We know many people from Dulverton appeared in the Land Girls a few years ago, but the Tantivy Notice board seems to be the place to start now. Our picture shows our local extra (on the right) in full dress and make up and we leave it to you to work out who it is! By the way the film was “Feast of July” 5 If you are worried about your current or future financial situation, you can contact a Wiser£money adviser to discuss how they may be able to assist you. The team also excelled themselves, winning the Somerset final and their team then went on to represent the South West and they came second, qualifying for the Southern England Round at Hartpury college. Which is a fantastic achievement, a special mention to James Vellacott who managed to achieve 82% of the team’s points For more details of the Young Farmers you should contact Hayley Lloyd 07527781816 Short and Sweet Dulverton by Starlight – An important date for your diary there will be an open meeting for anyone wishing to be involved with the organising of Dulverton by Starlight on Tuesday 12th April at 6.30pm at the Lion Hotel. Vintage Films are looking for a volunteer driver/s to pick up elderly film-goers from Hanover, Abbeyfield and the town centre on the 2nd Wednesday afternoon each month, for the film at Fishers Mead. We have one generousspirited citizen but he’s not always available and we’d love to have others we could call upon. There are usually between 3 and 6 people who need a lift each month to and from the centre. You might enjoy coming to the film yourself - it’s a delightful way to spend an afternoon! They have produced a Business Plan which will be presented at the April Town Council meeting and £1068 of match funding has being granted by our council. Our picture shows some of the club going out with the Dulverton Action Group litter picking in March. The Vintage Film Club I visited their monthly film show last month, I was not sure what to expect, a flickery picture with a piano playing in time with the film? No. What I found was a group of around 15 with tea in hand waiting for the film to start, flicker no, poor sound no, but a super bit of kit where they could enjoy “Whistle down the Wind” the 1961 film. This was all with the help of the Community Budgeting in August last year, together with U3A, the Vintage Film Club received a grant so that both organisations could buy and share the projection and sound equipment. Our picture shows the projector being operated by Magdalena and some of the audience. 7 1 & 2) Dulverton Slalom 2016– at the end of their run an another successful canoe weekend run by Taunton and Bideford Canoe Clubs, on the Barle down past The Caravan Site and National Park HQ , who allowed their car park to be used so ensuring enough parking during the weekend. 3 & 4) Work on the cottages in 2011, left in her will by Joyce 5) Football again now the pitch is dry 6) Carole King relaxing in her shop following the completion of her extension which about doubles the size of the shop and allows for a greater depth of goods and new items. Milverton are running the scheme with great success, they have 13 members who work in teams of 3.They select the safe places to operate with the local Police and wear Hi – Visibility jackets. They were operating when I visited them on a road with a 20mph Limit and during their watch 97 cars had passed 16 were over the limit and the highest speed was 34mph.The highest they ever recorded was 47mph over twice the limit, but they were having the effect of reducing the average speed. They have had no real problems except the odd V for “Victory” sign and they were happy to be photographed for our magazine. So it seems to work in Milverton and it’s a shame we don’t at least try it here, I think 4 people have offered to train and give it a go, but the council need 4 more to make it worthwhile, so why not offer, cards are in the post office or mail us and we will pass it on. If we don’t give it a go we will never know if it will help Dulverton. What happens to those caught speeding, a letter is sent on the 1st and 2nd occasions someone is caught and if they are caught a 3rd time the police take the letter round with some words of advice. (part 1) It is some while since I wrote about the above title, this month I would like to recount some facts and stories about the Carnarvon Arms Garage, also a long established garage and transport concern situated in Brushford. We will start in the mid nineteenth century when much of the land to the south of Dulverton was owned by the Earl of Carnarvon and some of the ground was being sold off to the then Devon and Somerset Railway. In this process the Earl kept some of the land to build a hotel next to the Dulverton station site, also retaining some fields close to the village of Brushford; this being the year 1873. My Great Grandfather James Nelder, whose family hailed from Cornwood near Plymouth, had run the Angel Inn and the Black Horse pub in Tiverton, was headhunted by the Earl to obtain a licence to sell liquor and spirits at the newly built Hotel in Brushford. This he did by buying the said licence from "The Country House Inn in Dulverton" thus taking up the post of Hotel licensee. After a short while he sent his son, Charles, to London to learn the trade, where he had a hard time as an apprentice and was convicted of stealing money from his employer. This was proved as he had some marked money in his apron pocket found by the police. Charles protested his innocence and found out that the marked money had been planted by a crooked police detective. However to try and get a pardon for a false conviction was very nearly impossible. It turns out that his father was well in with the society of the time and got letters of support from several of the gentry which indeed led to a pardon from the Queen. Had he not had this Charles would not have been able to take over the license to run the Hotel in the future. Indeed Charles and his mother were left to run the hotel on James death in 1879. Charles married and had quite a large family of both boys and girls . One of the boys being Reginald who took over the running of the Hotel on Charles death along with my father George. To return to the garage and transport, Charles was an entrepreneur and started a horse and carriage service between Dulverton station and Lynmouth in 1895. At this time he was also supplying goods and materials to builders (he was well placed to import these items) as he was situated so close to the station. The consequence being that he provided horse transport with carts and kept horses at livery, while following one of his loves in horse dealing! The demand for mechanized transport led to two brothers called Spencer requesting to buy land from what had now become The Carnarvon Arms Hotel Co. set up by the Nelder family. This was a piece of land bounded by Brushford Station Road, Brushford New Road and what is now called Market Close, opposite its current location. In 1908 there rose a structure that was to become Carnarvon Arms Garage built in a style known as a Dutch Barn, (used by many farmers locally for storing hay and the like.) Part 2 next month – CN Dulverton Heritage Centre Our Picture shows the Carnarvon Garage 13 14 BADMINTON : This has now ceased for the summer duration but will again commence early in September at the School on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm.
