Garden inspiration:
Designed to enrich your outdoor space
Scent, colour, light and air
It is almost spring. Can you feel
the urge to get out of the house
and plant something?
Colour drives homeowners to fill garden centre parking
Canada Blooms provides the perfect spark for your outdoor
imagination. See an idea at the show, and you will likely find a
contact within the pages of this magazine to bring it alive — on
your own property. Improving the environment around your
home invites you to think about some elements that are tough
to hold in your hands, but certainly drive your emotions:
Light brings colour alive. Light sustains your plants and light
Scent has universal appeal. Plants and flowers, in particular,
evoke powerful memories. Lilacs can take you right back to
your grandmother’s farm; carnations can transport to you to
prom. Take the cue, and use scent to make your surroundings
live on in the minds of your guests and your family.
lots over the May long weekend. Paint is nice, but living floral
colour trumps it hands down. Feed your appetite for colour
with foliage and flowers!
plays a powerful role in brightening your attitude. Appreciate
light better, through the moving leaves of your home garden
and landscape.
Air.
We depend on air, yet we cannot see it. Air defines
the space where plants exist, as they improve its quality by
providing oxygen. We can feel the summer breeze, but we
cannot touch it. Use your plantings, and the air between, to
define your family’s garden haven.
Living gardens give us the chance to stop and consider
captivating intangibles like scent, colour, light and air.
Surround your senses with the delight that horticulture brings.

Garden Inspiration, brought to
you by the horticultural experts at
Landscape Ontario Horticultural
Trades Association, is designed as a
tool to help you make more of your
outdoor living space. Members of
LOHTA operate in a wide range
of horticultural specialties, and
are united and serious about their
commitment to spread the joys and
benefits of horticulture.
No matter your level of gardening
expertise, the new plant listings
in this issue offer valuable and
exclusive information. If you are an
experienced gardener, you may be
pleased and surprised that breeders
have overcome a weakness of your
favourite perennial. If you are newer
to gardening, this magazine opens
up a whole world of plants and
possibilities. If something catches
your eye, finding that specific new
cultivar at your garden centre can
be less important than planting a
tried and true plant in the same
family. This information was
compiled by horticulturist Sarah
Willis, who studied at the University
of Guelph and the Niagara Parks
| GARDEN INSPIRATION
Commission School of Horticulture,
with assistance from horticultural
consultant Trevor Cole, author of
The Ontario Gardener.
The focus is narrow when looking at
plant cultivars. Step back, and your
perspective changes to a garden bed,
a patio or an entire property. The
dream landscapes pictured in this
issue are professional work from
LOHTA members, and can inspire
you on many levels.
All the landscapes pictured won
Landscape Ontario Awards of
Excellence for 2006, juried by
teams of horticultural experts. The
judges define a specific standard of
excellence, and do not grant awards
in specific categories if their standard
is not met. Whether they inspire
you to emulate a detail on your own
property, embark on a large do-ityourself project or engage a member
of the trade to design or construct
your own landscape, the Awards’
objective has been met.
Enjoy using this information to
improve the environment around
your home in 2007.

Daylily
Height: 25-100 cm (10-39 in.)
Spread: 30-90 cm (12-36 in.)
Exposure: sun
There are thousands of varieties of this popular, easy-togrow perennial in nearly every size and colour imaginable.
Daylilies are standards in an old-fashioned garden, known
for their multitude of short-lived blooms, but recent
developments in breeding have created cultivars that
bloom for a longer period or re-bloom later in the summer.
They are tolerant of a wide variety of soil conditions, but do
best in fertile, well-drained soil. Even when daylilies aren’t
blooming, their long grass-like leaves add a fine texture
to the garden. Plant a row of low-growing varieties as a
border along the front of the garden, while groupings of
taller daylilies should be set farther back. Deadhead the
spent flowers occasionally.
Huge flowers 15 cm (6 in.)
in diameter, with lavender

Cranesbill
Height: 10-75 cm (4-30 in.)
Spread: 10-120 cm 4-48 in.)
Exposure: light shade preferred
Also known as the hardy geranium, this perennial
shouldn’t be confused with the annual geranium used
in summer plantings. Cranesbill is a low-maintenance,
long-lived plant that makes a great mounding groundcover
in a mixed border, rock garden or woodland garden. There
are many different varieties, but most come in varying
shades of white, pink, purple or blue. Read the label
to determine bloom time and preferred light conditions
as they differ between varieties. Some cranesbills have
outstanding fall colour.

This special form of the native ostrich fern is wonderful for
creating a dramatic effect in moist, shady areas. The plumelike fronds are up to 50 per cent larger than the species, deep
green, forming an upright clump. Brownish fertile fronds appear
in the centre. Requires plenty of water through the summer.
A deciduous fern that is equally attractive in the garden or
containers. Grows 90-180 cm tall (36-72 in.) and spreads 90120 cm (36-48 in.) wide. Hardy to Zone 3.

d
id you know you can
contribute to environmental
conservation right in your own backyard? Visit the Backyard Ecotopia garden
at Canada Blooms (G-10) to learn
how gardening helps you act locally to
conserve water, energy, land and wildlife.
This backyard garden has been designed
and constructed using an environmental
conservation approach.
In this garden you will discover how
rainwater from the rooftop of your home can help irrigate
the garden, become part of a beautiful, yet functional, water
feature and help restore precious groundwater beneath the
land. You’ll also see how household waste can be diverted
from a landfill site to create rich soil for the garden. Recycled
household waste is converted to building materials for your
deck. Solar power and energy efficient appliances used in the
garden reduce energy consumption. Choosing the right plants
for the right place can help attract the desirable species of
wildlife for your Backyard Ecotopia.

Another amazing colour brought to you by the breeder of
‘Bartzella’ and ‘Yellow Crown’. Itoh’s hybrid ‘Lilac Morning’ is a
cross between a herbaceous peony and a tree peony. The result
is a plant with enormous, vivid 15 cm (6 in.) magenta-purple
blooms of a tree peony but on a strong herbaceous plant with
exceptional hardiness. Tissue culture has made these hybrids
more widely available at an accessible price. Height 65-75cm

Phlox ‘Magic Blue’
Phlox paniculata hybrid ‘Sherbet Cocktail’
Very unusual, intriguing
flowers that change from
one colour to another. The
blooms start with dark
lavender outer petals and
a lighter eye but mature
to a softer lavender outer
petal with a dark eye.
Flowers from June through
September. Grows 90 cm
(36 in.) tall. Zone 3.
Phlox ‘Sherbet Cocktail’
is the first perennial phlox
to show yellow in its
petals. It’s actually a bit
of a chameleon, forming
yellow buds encased in
chocolate-maroon bracts
which open to reveal
flowers with a yellow-green
edge and centres which
may be either white or
pink. The flowers have a
slightly waxy appearance,
similar to hydrangea. ‘Sherbet Cocktail’ has large, tight flower
clusters crowning upright stems. It also grows with the strength
of P. paniculata and has good resistance to mildew. Blooms
from July to September and grows 70 cm (28 in.) tall.

‘Peppermint Twist’ perennial phlox
A striking new

‘Peppermint Twist’
is a real head-turner
with its large clusters
of pink and white
striped flowers. While
the colouring has
been around for some
time in the form of P.
maculata ‘Natascha’, ‘Peppermint Twist’s P. paniculata bloodline
makes it a considerably stronger, healthier, more reliable plant.
Growing to just 40 cm (16 in.) high, ‘Peppermint Twist’ is a
very short variety, making it versatile for use in smaller gardens.
Blooms from July to September.

begonia series now
includes a chocolate
coloured foliage
companion. Like the
original green-leaved
Nonstop® begonias,
the Nonstop® Mocca
series has an upright
mounding habit with
10 cm (4 in.) fully

Annual vinca
Height: 15-60 cm (6-24 in.)
Spread: 15-60 cm (6-24 in.)
Exposure: full sun to part shade
Also known as Madagascar periwinkle, this summerflowering annual gives great results with minimal effort
— no pinching or deadheading required. The glossy green
leaves set off the single phlox-like blooms beautifully.
Annual vinca will tolerate pollution and dust from street
traffic, so it is an ideal choice for front gardens. Vinca
is drought tolerant, but prefers regular watering. These
tropical plants prefer warm weather, so don’t put them out
in the garden too early in spring.
Begonia tuberosa Go-go™ ‘Light Yellow’ and ‘Orange’
Go-go™ ‘Light Yellow’ and ‘Orange’
tuberous begonias
Rich and vivid, extralarge flowers contrast
beautifully with the
deep green foliage of
the Go-Go™ tuberous
begonias. Go-Go™
offers long-lasting
flower power and
gardeners will enjoy
these beauties all
season long. Grows
20-25 cm (8-10 in.)
tall and wide in partial
shade. Combine with
Xtreme™ impatiens for even more impact.
Calibrachoa Cabaret™ ‘Hot Pink’
Sweet potato vine
Height: 20-30 cm (8-12 in.)
Spread: 1.5 m. (5 ft.)
Exposure: sun to partial shade
The ornamental sweet potato vine is enjoying
a boost in popularity thanks to continued
interest in container gardening. As a foliage
accent, these vines are unparalleled in their versatility.
They are most commonly used as the “spiller” in window
boxes and patio pots, but the rapid growth rate of
ornamental sweet potatoes makes them a useful annual
groundcover as well. Available with light-green, red,
butterscotch/bronze, tricolour or deep-purple leaves,
the foliage can also be heart-shaped, or deeply serrated
for a finer texture. The foliage is easily trimmed back if it
gets too unruly.
