Although we face challenges, such as
reduced and late funding from the
state, more complex patients, increased
regulatory requirements, and competition
from for-profit hospices, the future of
Joliet Area Community Hospice is bright.
I am confident through our Palliative
Care, Pediatric, Veterans (PHD), and
bereavement programs, along with our
years of experience and forward thinking,
that we will stand strong and continue
to be a responsive leader in providing
the very best hospice service in our
community.

Team, staff and volunteers of this great
organization who ensure that the physical,
emotional, and spiritual needs of each
patient nearing end of life, as well as
their families, are met. This requires a
tireless commitment and, often, personal
sacrifice. It is this same commitment and

Hospice to fulfill our mission of providing

support service and care for terminally ill
persons, their caregivers and loved ones

enable the dying person to live peacefully,

Effective April 15, 2015, the Joliet Area
Community Hospice Board of Directors
appointed me as Interim CEO and Rick
Kasper, former CEO, left to pursue other
interests. Many will recall that I previously
served as JACH CEO for 16 years and now
serve also on the Board of Directors. My
tenure will be short as the Board does
a nationwide search for a new CEO. In
fact, the Board of Directors recently
announced that in August, the Interim CEO
position will be filled by Mary K. Sheehan
as the Board continues its search for a
permament CEO.

Hospice Home
In 2014, Joliet Area Community Hospice celebrated the 10th Anniversary of being the first freestanding hospice home in the state of Illinois. In
2004, many people had never heard of hospice let alone grasped the need for a facility where loved ones could die with dignity. The hospice home is
a labor of love and is here to meet the needs of patients, families and the community. The hospice home features 16 private rooms on 17 manicured
acres of land, plus other accommodations including a family game room, a dining room, an aviary and an extensive outdoor area. The Hospice
Home provides care 24 hours a day, seven days a week and offers three levels of care. Ten years later, Joliet Area Community Hospice has become a
beloved and integral part of the community and serves as a model for other freestanding hospice homes being built around the country.
There comes a time when you can’t cure the disease
and you have to focus on comfort. We provide that
care for both the patients and their families.

It is with heartfelt thanks that we share the news of the retirement this past spring of two of our long-time employees: Dr. Raymond Orenic, Chief
Medical Director (25 years) and Judy Militello Zimmerman, Vice President of Operations (11 years). Both of these dedicated staff members served the
patients, families, volunteers and staff of Joliet Area Community Hospice with love and compassion. We wish them all the best in their retirement.

Clinical Services
Hospice
Hospice is a holistic medical and philosophical approach to care that affirms life, while accepting death as life’s natural end. It focuses on quality of
life rather than length of life. Rather than treating a disease, Joliet Area Community Hospice treats the whole person. Joliet Area Community Hospice
provides services to patients wherever home is: their own private residence, nursing homes or the Hospice Home. Joliet Area Community Hospice cares
compassionately for terminally ill people by:
n Addressing the patient’s physical, psychological, and spiritual needs.
n Helping family members during and after the dying process.
n Providing comprehensive care when there is no cure, with an emphasis on pain and symptom control.
n Enabling a person to live the last weeks and months of life as fully and comfortably as possible, with dignity, at home
or in a home-like setting. Today, ninety-six percent of hospice days of care are provided at the patient’s residence.
n Accepting death as a natural part of life, seeking neither to hasten nor prolong the dying process.
The Hospice Care Team
Hospice care is provided on an as-needed basis – 24 hours a day, seven days a week – by an interdisciplinary team consisting of:
n Physicians
n Nurses
n Certified Nurse Assistants
n Social workers
n Chaplains or clergy
n Bereavement counselors
n Specially trained volunteers; and
n Other health care professionals as needed.
Services Provided by Hospice
Among its major responsibilities, the interdisciplinary hospice team:
n Manages the patient’s pain and symptoms;
n Assists the patient with the emotional and psychosocial aspects of dying;
n Provides needed drugs, medical supplies, and equipment;
n Coaches the family on how to care for the patient;
n Offers spiritual care;
n Delivers special services like speech and physical therapy when needed;
n Makes short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms
become too difficult to manage at home, or the caregiver needs respite
time; and
n Provides bereavement care and counseling to surviving family and friends.

Palliative Care
To palliate means to help make a person comfortable by treating one’s symptoms from an illness. Palliative Care is focused on the overall quality
of life for those suffering a serious illness that doesn’t necessarily have a terminal diagnosis. This includes but is not limited to: while you are
undergoing aggressive treatments, receiving skilled care provided by a nursing facility or home health, or as part of hospice care.
The Palliative consulting services of Joliet Area Community Hospice includes a specialized team of doctors, nurse practitioners and other specialists
to provide expert treatment to support a person’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
The role of the Palliative Care Team is to facilitate communication and understanding among the patient, family and providers of care with the hope
that the person and family will experience the highest possible satisfaction with the care they receive.
Our Palliative Care Team supports you and your family every step of the way, not only by controlling your symptoms, but also by helping you to
understand your treatment options and goals.

Bear. Bears are made from fabric provided by the
family from a clothing article of the person being
remembered. All bears are hand-crafted and made
with love by JACH volunteers. There are two bear
sizes: Small (suggested donation of $20) and Large

Volunteers
Joliet Area Community Hospice is honored to have over 260 dedicated volunteers that provide important services
to the patients and families we serve. Whether it’s providing companionship to a person in the final months
and weeks of life, offering support to family members and caregivers, or helping with community outreach and
fundraising, the contributions of volunteers are essential to the important work provided by Joliet Area Community
Hospice. Volunteers provide support that helps enhance the patient’s quality of life and reduces the family’s caregiving burden. Every hospice volunteer has something special and significant to contribute.
Our Pride, Honor, and Dignity (PHD) Veteran Volunteers are continuing to “Touch a Veteran’s Heart” during
our Veteran Pinning Ceremonies and they are supporting our Veterans Memorial Garden Project with their time,
talents and treasures as well. This project is moving forward. When complete, this garden will honor our past,
present, and future service men and women.
As we celebrate and thank our Volunteers who are touching our patients and families everyday, this in turn
touches our hearts everyday!

10 Facts about Hospice Care you
may not know
Some people have the wrong idea about hospice care. They think that hospice is only about dying and that hospice is the place you go when there’s
nothing more to be done. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hospice helps people with a life-limiting illness focus on living as fully as possible for
as long as possible.
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization is working to help people understand that hospice brings comfort, dignity, and peace to people
facing a terminal illness. Hospice provides support and care for the family caregivers, too.
1. Hospice is not a place - it’s high-quality care that focuses on comfort and quality of life.
2. Hospice is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans. Fear of costs should never prevent a person from accessing hospice care.
3. Hospice serves anyone with a life-limiting illness, regardless of age or type of illness.
4. Hospice provides expert medical care as well as spiritual and emotional support to patients and families.
5. Research has shown that the majority of Americans would prefer to be at home at the end of life - hospice makes this possible for most people.
6. Hospice serves people living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
7. Hospice patients and families can receive care for six months or longer.
8. A person may keep his or her referring physician involved while receiving hospice care.
9. Hospice offers grief and bereavement services to family members to help them adjust to the loss in their lives.
10. Research has shown people receiving hospice care can live longer than similar patients who do not opt for hospice.
Memorial Bricks
Remember a loved one or honor a special person with the purchase
of a Memorial Brick. Brick purchase contributions support the mission
and outreach of Joliet Area Community Hospice by increasing access
to hospice and palliative services, sustaining existing bereavement and
veterans programs, and helping to launch new and specialized programs.
Memorial bricks are randomly placed at the Joliet Area Community
Hospice home on the walking path around the pond. The cost is $150
donation (which is fully tax deductible pursuant to tax laws) for each
engraved brick which can be personalized with 3 lines of text. Icons are
also available and notifications are sent when brick is installed. To place

The American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association recently presented a donation of
$1,304 to JACH to support the creation of a Veterans Memorial Garden on the Hospice

Exelon’s Braidwood Generation Station hosted their annual “Fishing for a Cure” tournament
in May for the benefit of Joliet Area Community Hospice, Hospice of Kankakee Valley and
Grundy Volunteer Hospice. Each hospice received nearly $16,000 from the event.
