Food Drive is a Success
By: Seventh Grade Class
Each year during the month of
November, schools across the country
can be found hosting massive food
drives. Boxes are placed throughout
schools so that donations can be made.
Cowan Elementary School is no
different. During the week of
November 9-13, students from
kindergarten through eighth grade took
part in our annual food drive. Each
afternoon, Mr. Wagoner’s RtI students
would go to all of the different
homerooms and collect the daily totals.
After the totals were calculated, the
items were then taken to the library in
order to determine a school-wide total.
With Friday being the last day of the
drive, students arrived with massive
amounts of items to donate. In all,
Cowan Elementary School was able to
collect almost 700 items. These items
were then transported to a nearby
church. At Forgiven Ministries, the
items were separated and sorted so
that baskets could be made and
distributed to deserving families. The
students/faculty at Cowan were able to
make the holidays a little more special
for a lot of families in Letcher County.
THE CRAZE OF BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. Every year,
stores all across the country cut prices to promote sale
efforts of the Christmas season. The term “black
Friday” comes from the idea of saving money and
being in the “black”, as oppose to losing money and
being in the “red”. It’s actually the most successful
business day of the year, nationwide. After finishing
their Thanksgiving dinner, many people scurried to
massive stores and awaited doors to be unlocked and
products to be unwrapped. All were eager to take
advantage of the great deals that they would receive
before the items had vanished off of the shelves.
Although it is hectic, there are still many benefits like
the cheap products the fun atmosphere. Other critics
feel that Black Friday takes away from time spent with
family during the holiday weekend and causes us to
lose sight of the real reason for the Christmas season.
Trunk or Treat is a Feat

The Trunk or Treat was a great thing for
the Cowan Elementary School. They had
hay rides around the track, and they had
over 60 people dressed up as Halloween
characters and gave out candy from their
trunks that was decorated. Truck or Treat
was performed on October the 10th. The
whole Cowan Elementary School
participated such as: K/8. That is how
the Cowan Elementary Schools Trunk or
Treat went this year.
Taking on Tom the Turkey
Turkeys began lining the walls of Cowan
during the last two weeks of November.
Unique turkeys span from Mrs. Burns’ room
in the elementary hallway, all the way
through to Ms. Slone’s room in the middle
school hallway. Each turkey dawned a
different appearance such as a Starbucks
turkey, a baby turkey, a turkey resembling
Mr. Mike, and superheroes of all kinds. A
multitude of colors and textures covered
the walls of CES. Each turkey had his own
personality and theme, as each student’s
artistic creativities shined through. To
accompany their creations, students were
also asked to compose a persuasive piece
entailing why we should devour hotdogs at
Thanksgiving, as oppose to the traditional
turkey.

Veteran’s Day

Cowan Elementary is so thankful for all
of our veterans. Veteran’s Day was on
November 11, 2015. Cowan Elementary
School had sent a note home, inviting
all of their family members that were
veterans, to come and eat lunch with
them on this day. Veterans that had
served in all parts of the world filed into
our lunchroom and were greeted with
the upmost respect. After the
luncheon, students worked throughout
the remainder of the week to prepare
“thank you” cards for all of the veterans
that were able to attend. We are so
thankful for the ones that made the
choice to sacrifice their life for this
country. We are so appreciative of
them and proud of their
accomplishments.
Kindergarten News-Enjoyed Getting to see Lacy, the
dairy cow. Lacy is part of a program sponsored by
Schwann’s. The students learned about the cow’s
diet, caretaking, milking, as well as the nutrients of
milk. The lady that did the presentation has lived on
a dairy farm her entire life.
First Grade News-Mrs. Lowe’s and Mrs.
Lumpkins’ classes have been focusing on
Author Purpose, addition, fractions, writing
