WHO WE ARE
The Seaside Chamber of Commerce was first
organized on April 15, 1936 with a staff of one. Today,
the Chamber has flourished with nearly 400 members
and a staff of three. We provide community
leadership for local businesses, professionals, nonprofits, governments and individuals that binds our
small town into a veritable force of nature!
We pride ourselves in the outstanding events and
programs we produce each year including Pouring at
the Coast, a craft beer festival held in the month of
March; Seaside Beach Soccer tournament in June;
coordination of the city’s 4th of July fireworks display;
Seaside Beach Volleyball tournament, the largest
amateur beach volleyball tournament in the world, the
second weekend in August; hosting the beer garden
at the finish line for Hood to Coast, a relay race from
Mt. Hood to the Pacific Ocean; Yuletide in Seaside, a
collection of holiday events that include the Holiday
Gift Fair, lighted parade, community Christmas tree
with Santa and a community sing-a-long; and an
annual awards banquet that celebrates our
outstanding businesses and members, as well as the
annual Byron Award winner which recognizes
Seaside’s outstanding citizen.
The Seaside Chamber is a member of CEDR, Clatsop
Economic Development Resource; the Seaside
Museum; Seaside Downtown Development
Association; both Chambers in Astoria/Warrenton
and Cannon Beach; Seaside Rotary Club; and the
Oregon State Chamber of Commerce.
There are many benefits of membership which
include access to committees; networking
opportunities; education via our relationship with the
SBDC (Small Business Development Corp.); business
advocacy, both locally and statewide in Salem; and
business promotion via this directory, our 24/7
information system in the foyer of our building and a
wall rack for member brochures inside the
Chamber/Visitor Bureau lobby.
In addition to committees for each of the events, there
are also Ambassadors, Governmental Affairs; Finance,
and Board of Directors. The Chamber hosts a weekly
membership breakfast each Friday morning. Once a
month, one of our members hosts Business After
Hours. We boast a volunteer pool of over 100 people
and that is our secret to so many successful events!
We are the heartbeat of Seaside, Oregon and we
invite you to join us!

ho knew that being the President of a Chamber would be so much fun? Evidently, it
wasn’t me. When asked if I wanted to be president, I said no three times, finally
agreeing only after the laser-eyed stare of the Director hypnotized me into a moment of
proplasmic weakness, and I accepted the nomination. Yes, at first I thought that being
President of the Board would be fraught with drama and mind-numbing minutiae; however, I have
since learned the error of my ways. Being President is awesome! Not only do I get to be involved
with wonderful businesses and community members, but I got a real gavel! The Seaside Chamber
of Commerce is not only vibrant and successful, it is alive with the fabulous energy of the community.
Am I a) proud; b) honored; c) thrilled to be President? Well, yes, all of the above! I also get to
laugh and smile a lot which, in my book, is the most important. The Seaside community is
delightful, and this Chamber is awesome!

CHAMBER AMBASSADORS
The Chamber Ambassadors are a group of dedicated people who volunteer their time and energy
to serve as goodwill ambassadors for the Seaside Chamber of Commerce. They were founded with
the objective to present a positive image of the Seaside area to both visitors and residents. The
Ambassadors participate under the direction of their chairperson, the Chamber Executive and Board
of Directors.
The Ambassadors maintain a high visibility profile by developing goodwill, attending and supporting
Chamber activities and events, and acting as hosts for Business After Hours. Their main fundraising
activity is the flag service where they put up and take down American flags all over the community
on designated holidays. The Ambassadors sport red shirts and are often seen cutting ribbons for new
businesses around town. They are the handshake of Seaside

banquet to recognize outstanding businesses
and individuals who contribute to our
community and embody our local spirit. This
year’s awards honored the following:

SEASIDE SIGNAL NEWSPAPER
During her tenure as director, the district was
expanded to include the skate park, Youth
Center and new facilities and services. The
Broadway Park Fields were redeveloped and the
football field got lights without a single public
dollar being spent. She created the Community
Garden program, and the Bob Chisholm
Community Center was established.
The Seaside Signal has been serving the
community with news and information since
1905. Published bi-weekly, the Signal is the only
local newspaper that focuses on the Seaside
area. Its long history of working with the
community makes it invaluable to our residents
and visitors.
More recently, Blake invested herself in the
South Clatsop Community Food Bank. She was
instrumental in the nonprofit organization’s
capital and operational fundraising campaign,
“Imagine a Community Without Hunger”. She is
one of the most recognizable and beloved
members of our community.

THE CITY OF SEASIDE
Seaside is an incorporated city that operates under a Council/City Manager. A Mayor and six City
Council members represent the community. Pacific Power and Light and Northwest Natural Gas are
the primary electricity and gas providers for the City. The City of Seaside provides the community and
residents with water and sewer services. Public safety in Seaside is administered by the Seaside Police
Department and the Seaside Fire Department.
CONVENTION CENTER
The Seaside Civic & Convention Center is a city
owned and operated convention, tradeshow
and multipurpose facility. It was developed with
the primary purpose of promoting and
facilitating events and activities which generate
economic benefits to the area as well as
providing services and facilities to respond to
the needs of local and civic related events,
thereby truly enhancing the quality of life for
the community it serves. It currently welcomes
over 40,000 attendees every year
FIRE AND RESCUE
Seaside Fire & Rescue provides fire protection,
rescue, and emergency medical services to the
citizens and visitors of Seaside and the surrounding
rural fire protection district. The department was
established in 1904 and its membership has been
volunteer for over 100 years. Currently, roughly 50
volunteers from all professions respond to
emergencies 24 hrs. a day.
Additional services provided include seasonal beach lifeguards, and fire marshal for inspection services.
Our personnel are also active in several fire and rescue organizations within the county, including
HAZMAT 11, Clatsop County High Angle Rescue Team, and the County Fire Investigation Team.
LIBRARY
The Seaside Public Library has been a part of the city of Seaside for over 100 years has one of the
highest circulation rates on the Oregon Coast. The library has a collection of 47,000 items that
includes 39,000 books and periodicals, 3,200 music CDs and audio books, as well as 4,400 DVDs.
Patrons can also download E-Books, audiobooks, and videos through the Library2Go platform. The
facility has twenty public computers with Internet access; four children’s computers equipped with
Tumble Books, and free Wi-Fi. Additionally we have adult and young adult Kindles for checkout.
The library provides a Summer Reading Program and weekly story times for children, teen activities,
and a wide variety of adult events for our community. Monthly calendars are free to download at the

VISITORS BUREAU
The Seaside Visitors Bureau is a department of the City of Seaside, as well as an official Oregon State
Welcome Center. With a full library of regional and state travel guides, maps, and brochures, we are
here to assist visitors leading up to and during their travel to the region.
The Visitors Bureau and State Welcome Center is located on the northeast corner of Hwy 101 and

POLICE
Seaside Police Department is a full service law
enforcement agency with 24 hour patrol,
communications coverage, and 9-1-1 service.
The communication center services 3 law
enforcement agencies and 4 fire agencies in
southern Clatsop County. The total estimated
permanent population for the communities
served is 14,000 and 7,000 in rural population.
The Department currently has 20 full-time officers including: Chief, Lieutenant, 3 Sergeants, Detective
Sergeant, Narcotic Detective, Detective, 4 Corporals, and 6 Officers. Communications includes:
Communications Manager and 8 certified dispatchers.
A motorcycle patrol with 3 certified motor officers using 2 Harley-Davidson Road King police
motorcycles operate throughout the tourist season and during the rest of the year as needed. Bicycle
Patrol operates during the major tourist season which provides a faster response to calls in the center
of town during times of high traffic.

PUBLIC WORKS
The Seaside Public Works Department employs 22 people on a year-round basis and two to three
additional employees during the summer. Major areas of responsibilities for Public Works are
wastewater treatment and collections, water treatment and distribution, street and public facility
maintenance, parks, engineering, fleet maintenance, and watershed maintenance
Charged with providing and maintaining the infrastructure necessary for a modern city, the Public
Works Department provides continual services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The
streets are maintained by the Public Works Department along with street trees and gardens, traffic
signals, storm water systems, parks, and the Seaside Airport.
Seaside's public employees are hard at work for the citizens and tourists each and every day, and
they're proud to be able to make your life safer and easier.
SEASIDE EMERGENCY
WARNING SYSTEM
The City of Seaside operates an Emergency
Warning System composed of a series of
speakers mounted on poles around the city. In
the event of a sudden emergency such as a
distant tsunami, the warning system will be
activated to alert individuals of the threat. The
sirens emit an intermittent 3 minute blast. The
Emergency Warning system is not intended to be
audible indoors, but to warn those near the water
along beaches, docks and estuaries to move to
higher ground. To receive warnings inside your
home or business, purchase a NOAA Weather
Radio for your home or sign up for mobile alerts.
Every first Wednesday of the month at 11:00am,
from September through May, the Seaside Police
Department conducts a test of its Emergency
Warning System. The test includes three beeps,
followed by a voice recording in English and
Spanish.
Most tsunamis that strike the Oregon coast are
triggered by earthquakes in distant places, such
as Alaska and Japan. These are called DISTANT
TSUNAMIS. It takes these waves four to twelve
hours to reach Clatsop County. The tsunamis are
usually less than 5 ft high and pose little threat to
local residents. Typically, only the lowest areas
near rivers, estuaries, and beaches will be at risk.
Should a DISTANT TSUNAMI pose a hazard,
NOAA emergency radios and municipal warnings
will sound several hours before the wave will strike.
Residents should tune in to local radio stations or
television to learn of the hazard and evacuate to
safe areas. Because there will be plenty of time to
evacuate safely, it is permissible to evacuate by car.
Remember, distant tsunamis pose only limited
hazard under most situations, and there will always
be enough time to evacuate safely.
LOCAL TSUNAMIS are triggered by longduration, violent earthquakes less than 100 miles
off shore along the Oregon Coast. They pose an
extreme hazard to anyone living within tsunami
inundation zones. Shaking may last for up to 5
minutes. Waves that follow the earthquake can be
40 feet high and will strike within about 20
minutes of the onset of shaking.
If you feel the ground shaking, take cover under a
sturdy piece of furniture and hold on. If shaking
lasts longer than 30 seconds, move to high
ground as soon as you possibly can. Do not wait
for an official warning. Take time only to grab
previously packed survival supplies. Immediately
evacuate by foot, bicycle, or small scooter. Do not
drive, as roads will likely be impassable due to
fallen power poles and damaged bridges.
Have plans prepared in advance to reconnect
with loved ones. Budget your evacuation time
carefully. Practice regularly to ensure you know
your route to safety.

HISTORY OF SEASIDE
The current site of Seaside was first inhabited by
Native Americans of the peaceful Clatsop tribe.
Archeological digs in the Seaside area have
uncovered Indian artifacts over 2000 years old.
By the time the Lewis and Clark Expedition
arrived in 1805, there were only about 250
members of the Clatsop tribe left, due to the
decimating effect of smallpox, previously carried
by fur traders and earlier explorers.
After a few months, supplies were getting low for
the expedition, and salt was needed to cure and
preserve a meat supply and for their personal use.
Lewis and Clark sent five of their men to find a
beach site for salt making. The camp was
established on January 1, 1806 some 15 miles
south of Fort Clatsop, the present site of Seaside.
The site of that Salt Works in Seaside was
determined by the Oregon Historical Society in
1900, after the location was pointed out to their
committee by Jennie Michelle. Her Clatsop
parents had seen the white men boiling sea water
and had shown her the spot when she was a
young girl (she was born about 1816). The "Salt
Works" is now a National Monument, and is
located in Seaside on Lewis and Clark Way.
By 1846, Clatsop County population totaled 95
persons, representing 38 families, but most
settled on the Plains, north of Seaside.
The first step toward the future Seaside came
when the widow and children of Alexander Lattie,
a drowned Columbia River pilot from Scotland,
bought two donation land claims in 1852 and
1853, located where the Seaside Golf Course now
exists. They established the Northwest Coast's
first boarding residence in 1852, called Summer
House. In 1870, Ben Holladay, a transportation
magnate known as “the Stagecoach King”, made
his first visit to Summer House. He liked it so much
that within about a year, he bought it and began
construction of a new hotel called Seaside House.
An imposing Italian Villa, Seaside House and
grounds were legendary and was known as "The
Coastal Capital of Oregon" and acted as the first
post office in the area.
In 1886, mail was no longer delivered to Seaside
House because the Seaside House area had now
become the town of Sea Side. In 1888, the
community officially became known by one word,
Seaside, and had 80 residents. The city was
incorporated on February 17, 1899.
By 1910, the population jumped to over 1,000
with 5000 to 10,000 visitors arriving every summer,
but two years later, Seaside was decimated by the
“Great Fire of 1912” which destroyed 54
businesses. However, the town rebuilt, and in
1920, the Promenade, with its Turnaround at the
end of Broadway, was constructed.
Today, Seaside boasts a population of over 6,400
and is one of the more popular beach towns on
the Oregon Coast.

LIVING AT THE BEACH
Located 75 miles west of Portland, Seaside lies on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, at the southern end
of the Clatsop Plains, 18 miles south of where the Columbia River empties into the Pacific. The
Necanicum River bisects the city and flows out to the ocean at the city's northern edge. Tillamook
Head towers over the south edge of the city. Astoria is 17 miles to the north and our other neighbor,
Cannon Beach is 7 miles south.
Seaside is a common tourist destination, and the city's population grows in the summer. In August,
the city is host to the largest beach volleyball tournament in the United States. The Seaside beach
also marks the finish line for annual Hood to Coast relay race and Portland-to-Coast relay walk, which
also take place in August.
THE CLIMATE
On average, there are 128 sunny days per year in Seaside. The July high is around 67 degrees. The
January low is 37. Our comfort index, which is based on humidity during the hot months, is a 72 out
of 100, where higher is more comfortable. The US average on the comfort index is 44.
Seaside, gets 76 inches of rain per year, mostly during the winter months. The US average is 37. The
number of days with any measurable precipitation is 187.

SEASIDE QUICK FACTS
• Seaside is a small town with a population of
6,453 people, but during the vacation
season, the city experiences a large influx of
people who stay in hotels, vacation rentals
and or in second homes they own in the
area. As the vacation season ends, the
population drops again, leaving behind a
substantially quieter and smaller city.
• The Seaside School District offers K-12
education to over 1500 students in the area.
Clatsop Community College, a public, twoyear institution is located approximately 17
miles north in Astoria and serves over 10,000
students
• The education level of Seaside citizens is a
little higher than the average for US cities
and towns: 22.46 of adults in Seaside have
at least a bachelor's degree.
• Average home price per square foot for
Seaside was $149, an increase of 12.9%
compared to the same period last year.
• The main roads connecting Seaside to
neighboring communities include state
highway 101, south to Cannon Beach and
north to Gearhart, Warrenton and Astoria.
State highway 26 connects these coastal
communities o the Portland Metro area.
The Portland International Airport is 80 miles
northeast of Seaside and is the closest
commercial and international airport. The
Seaside municipal airport is accessible by

Seaside is home to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number report their race to be
White, followed by Asian. Seaside also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin
