Looking back, this has been a life-changing journey for me. Growing this
project from the ground up, nurturing it through its teething troubles,
establishing enduring systems and processes, building a committed
team of professionals who share the dream, and then watching it take
wing with a blend of pride, joy and trepidation has been an intense
experience—challenging, yet infinitely gratifying.
Resolute in our belief that compassion and comfort are the cornerstones
of care, we have managed to live up to the very high ethical and
professional standards we set ourselves upon inception, and meet the
stringent benchmarks that characterise the finest medical institutions
across the world. We have succeeded in blazing a very individual trail
by pursuing a full-time specialist system, and achieved a convergence

newborn has successfully undergone congenital heart surgery; the
easy gait of the silver man whose Parkinson’s disease has responded
to deep brain stimulation (DBS); the happiness reflected on the face
of the 60-year-old man who successfully underwent robotic surgery
for prostate cancer; and the bright smile of the 26-year-old mother
who underwent a liver transplant from a living donor—her 19-year-old
brother.
These are just some of the successes that impel us to strive harder to be

Research Activities at Kokilaben
Hospital
A large part of our research is clinical. It is not restricted to laboratories
but carried out across specialities, including cardiology, cardiac surgery,
anaesthesiology, radiology, pathology, histo-pathology, nephrology,
neurology, urology, orthopaedics, paediatric cardiac surgery, physical
medicine and rehabilitation. Our patients are the subjects of our
research data collection—the data is then analysed and the findings
prepared for publication or presentation.
We have established an Institutional Scientific and Ethics Board (ISEB)
to ensure the protection of the rights, safety and well-being of human
subjects involved in research projects and to provide public assurance
of that protection, which is registered with the regulatory authority of
our country, Drug Controller General of India. ISEB has reviewed 161
clinical research projects in the past few years, of which 107 have been
initiated by us.
Clinical Services
In India, every one in 100 live births suffers from Congenital
Heart Disease (CHD). On a very generous estimate, only around
10,000 to 15,000 congenital heart surgeries are performed in
India annually, in about a dozen dedicated centres capable of
taking care of neonates and infants after heart surgery. This is only
about a tenth of what needs to be done. There was no integrated
centre for children’s cardiac care in Mumbai and, in fact, the
whole of Western India. Sensing the crying need, we set up a
comprehensive Children’s Heart Centre, a welcome development
in a region where cardiac care for children needs to be continually
supported and subsidised.
Another gap recognised was in the area of liver transplant. Every
year, around 250,000 patients die of liver failure in India owing to
cirrhosis and over 25,000 patients need a liver transplant every
year. However, there was no comprehensive liver transplant setup
EXCELLENCE AND BEYOND
The ‘Centres of Excellence’ and Multispecialty Clinics at
Kokilaben Hospital aim to provide best-in-class tertiary and
quaternary care medical services. The Children’s Heart Centre,
Centre for Sports Medicine, Centre for Rehabilitation, Centre for
Robotic Surgery and the Centre for Liver Transplant are some
of the key, pioneering Centres of Excellence that have achieved
remarkable success and have since become change agents.
The Children’s Heart Centre currently performs over 800
Paediatric Heart Surgeries every year. The youngest baby to
undergo surgery was just seven hours old. Indeed, the Centre is
passionately committed to save precious little hearts.
The Robotic Surgery Programme, since its launch in mid 2012,
has been performing 500 robot-assisted surgeries across all
specialities annually. Besides cancer, this highly advanced
technology plays a significant role in treating cases in the fields
of Gynaecology, Sleep Medicine, GI and Bariatric.
The Living Donor Liver Transplant Programme is another first
that started in late 2013, with over 100 liver transplants in a
span of 2 years. It is the first-of-its-kind, comprehensive liver
transplant centre in Western India.
The Centre for Rehabilitation and the Centre for Sports
Medicine have revolutionised care, not just in the city but in the
country. With its unique features and dedicated multidisciplinary
teams, the Centre for Rehabilitation has become an all-India
referral centre that has brought remarkable improvement in the
quality of life of many patients.

Kokilaben Hospital has 21 operating rooms across six independent
clusters that are equipped with laminar air flow systems, ceilingmounted pendants, and antistatic and antibacterial flooring. The
hospital has dedicated operating rooms for neurosurgery, cardiac
surgery, organ transplant surgery and robotic surgery. Medical
equipment in our operating rooms matches the best in the world.
Operating rooms for obstetrics, cosmetology and IVF are located
within their respective clusters, thereby limiting movement of the
patients from one area to another.

ISOLATION ROOMS
There are 40 isolation beds in our hospital; these are basically single
rooms where patients are admitted to prevent cross-infection. While
Positive Pressure Rooms are used to accommodate patients at risk
of contracting infection easily, Negative Pressure Rooms are used to
accommodate patients who may be infected and spread infection to
others.

Wilson’s Disease is an inherited disorder that causes too much
copper to accumulate in the liver, brain and other vital organs
causing major complications and, at times, death if not treated
on time

The levels between the 3rd and 15th floors are dedicated to patient
rooms and Intensive Care Units (ICU), accommodating over 750 beds.

the city standard of 150 sq ft. The 16th floor houses exclusive patient
suites with a foyer, guest area and terraces. Exclusive and secluded
