Help us recognize greatness
I woke to a chill the other morning, and it stirred memories of previous winters. Those cold,
cold days when we seem to depend on each other far more.
Last January, on the coldest of those days, we gathered in the doomed Bangor Civic Center
and reminded one another of how interconnected our lives are. Seven individuals and organizations
from our region received recognition as part of our annual awards dinner. Fittingly, as we celebrated
the end of the old Auditorium and Civic Center and the anticipation of the new Cross Insurance
Center, Peter Vigue of Cianbro - whose firm helped make the new facility possible - received our
most distinguished honor, the Norbert X. Dowd Award.
This year we realize a long-held dream of holding our awards dinner
in a new, modern facility that has reinvigorated our community. Our 2014
Annual Awards Dinner promises to be our largest and best so far. Mark it on
your calendar for Jan. 22.
But who, you say, will be honored at this very first Chamber dinner in
this wonderful facility? Well, the answer to that is, I don't know. But perhaps
you do.
In the coming weeks we will be taking nominations for our 2014 awards.
And if you know of an individual or organization that deserves recognition,
we'd like to hear from you.

Among those to be honored is, of course, the Dowd Award recipient, given to a person who has
distinguished himself or herself through a lifetime of both community involvement and business
success. Other awards given out include Business of the Year, the Community Service Award, NonProfit of the Year, the Arthur Comstock Professional Service Award, the Bion and Dorain Foster
Entrepreneurship Award and the Catherine Lebowitz Award for Public Service.
I'd be remiss if I also did not mention other significant honors given out by the Bangor Region
Chamber or its programs. The Chamber honors a person who has helped the organization through
his or her volunteer service with a Volunteer of the Year Award, given out
at our annual meeting and breakfast. The Fusion Bangor group of young

Our process for selecting awards starts with nominations, and you will
find a link on our website, bangorregion.com, to help in this process. Once
we have those nominations in hand - and they are due by the close of business on Monday, Oct.
14 - the Chamber's board will select the winners. All board members are invited to the workshop
where we sort through nominees and recommend those to be honored, and then the full board
ratifies the choices.
As I've said before, it certainly is nice that we can recognize the
individuals and organizations that contribute so much to our community.
All are deserving. But the real purpose behind all these honors is to remind
ourselves of what an amazing place the Bangor Region is. Though we give
out a fair number of awards each year, we are never at a loss for deserving
individuals and organizations to honor.
So as the temperatures drop, you can warm your heart by helping us
recognize those who make life better no matter the weather.

gives a glimpse into our process, and
highlights one of the many ways our
Chamber advocates for its members.

It started with a discussion in our Governmental Affairs group
after the issue was brought to our attention. That group appointed a
John Porter, President & CEO subcommittee of two - in this case Steve Ribble and Gail Kelly - to look
at the issue and bring a recommendation to the board. The board then
took a position and tasked the Chamber's president with contacting the EPA and expressing the
organization's concerns.

environmental advocacy organizations, the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce would urge that your
office deny this request for residual designation authority.
The petition, which EPA has been asked to act upon before October 8, 2013, would designate nearly
2,000 water bodies throughout New England (more than 150 in Maine) as impaired. This would require
immediate mitigation to improve water quality and specifically address contributions from impervious
surface storm-water runoff. The petition does not, however, categorize watersheds by size, type, land use
or a specific determent to be mitigated. The timeframe for action affords neither the agency nor the public
sufficient time to analyze and comment upon such a broad-ranging petition.
Further, the petition does not offer guidance on how such a widespread program would be funded,
administered or enforced, nor does it indicate how existing initiatives (such as the City of Bangor Storm
Water Utility) would be impacted or duplicated.
While we fervently oppose this petition, we wish to express that there is also widespread support
among our membership for continuing to protect and improve our environment. The attitudes of
businesses, municipalities, and our legislative delegation all recognize the role that our environmental
quality plays in our lives and our economy.

a “one size fits all” approach would greatly detract from the work being done, and that will be done, with
respect to these concerns. We remain unconvinced that this broad and poorly defined petition will yield
the desired results or do so in a manner that is fair and maximizes the benefits of any funds to be used for
mitigation.

• People’s United Community Foundation
launched a matching campaign with
DonorsChoose.org across the People’s United
Bank footprint in honor of Teacher Appreciation
Week in May. Public schools throughout Maine
are receiving new classroom supplies just in
time for the start of the new school year, thanks
to a People’s United Community Foundation
$100,000 grant to DonorsChoose.org. The
funding inspired 295 individuals over the
course of three months to match $13,500 worth
of classroom projects in Maine. As a result, a
total of 60 projects were funded, touching more
than 3,000 students across the state.
• Acadia Hospital announces that Wayne
Steller, PMHNP-BC has been named vice
president and chief nursing officer for effective
September 18, 2013. He has served as interim
chief nursing officer since June 16, 2013. In
addition to his executive duties, Steller, a highly
trained psychiatric nurse practitioner, will
periodically continue to provide direct patient
care services.
• Penobscot Community Health Care
(PCHC) announces that Hope House guests,
staff, and volunteers have sustained a community
garden for the third year. The produce is used
for meals area shelters. PCHC also announces
that it has received a $24,912 grant from the
John T. Gorman Foundation for its “At-Risk
Geriatric In-Home Expansion” Project. The
purpose of the project is to increase PCHC's
capacity to provide home-based primary
care to patients age 65 or older and to allow
people to continue to live in their own homes
and communities. PCHC announces that its
Unlimited Solutions Clubhouse is Getting
Healthier with a new Fit 4 US Wellness Program.
In addition, PCHC announces that Mr. Eric
Buch, Director of Operations, Four Directions
Development Corporation (FDDC), has joined
its Board of Directors and that Kate Francis,
MA, Clinical Coordinator, Summer St. Health
Center, was voted Employee of the Year by her
fellow employees during PCHC’s Employee
Appreciation Events. Robert P. Allen MD,
MHCM, FACC, Executive Medical Director
has been named to Maine Health Management
Coalition’s (MHMC) list of influential health
care leaders and is slated to receive the award at
MHMC’s Annual Symposium on October 10th.

national retail chain of arts and crafts stores,
opens on Stillwater Ave. with a ribbon cutting
ceremony and official grand opening celebration
on Monday, September 30, at 9:00 a.m. The
Bangor store is Hobby Lobby’s 1st location in

55,000 square-foot retail facility.

• Beal College announces a new partnership
with Husson University. On Friday, September
20, 2013, school officials signed a memorandum
of understanding to formalize four new
transfer agreements between the institutions.
These new transfer agreements will allow
graduates of Beal College’s associate degrees in
Accounting, Business Management and both
concentrations of Criminal Justice to receive
credit at Husson University toward a Bachelor
of Science degree in a corresponding major.
• Charles P. Collins, Ed.D., has been named
executive director of Husson University’s
Southern Maine campus. Collins, a resident
of Portland, ME, brings more than 20 years
of leadership experience working with Maine
community colleges to the position.

Mind Your Mood
Many of the same wellness activities designed to keep us healthy at work and at home also offer benefits to our mental
health. Physical activity matters for your body and your mood:

Nutrients such as vitamin B12 found in salmon, trout, and fortified breakfast cereals, and folate found in

is also offering the same for omega-3 fatty acids which, by the way, are also good for your heart.
Getting enough quality sleep is also crucial to keeping your mind and mood healthy. There are some new tech tools you
can wear to monitor the quality of your sleep. Jawbone Up, Larklife, and Fitbit Flex are three examples. These three are worn
as a bracelet and track activity as well as sleep.
While exercise, eating right, and sleep can help alleviate mild depression, sometimes it’s difficult to judge what’s mild or
may be more than what is normal.

Last spring, Fusion took Bangor by storm with the start of the Fusion Sports program and the inaugural
Fusion Dodgeball League. Now lightning strikes twice as Fusion Sports hit the fields with Kickball running
September and October. Over a dozen teams are signed up to kick, sprint, slide, catch and kick! The Fusion Sports
program has been an excellent vehicle for introducing more young professionals and residents to other Fusion

What is Building Bridges?
The Building Bridges Program is a business-education partnership sponsored by the Bangor Region Chamber
of Commerce. Hundreds of educators including teachers, school superintendents, guidance counselors, school
board members, parents and students have acclaimed Building Bridges as one of the most effective educational
activities they have experienced. Participating businesses find it a valuable means to develop the future workforce.
• From January to May each year, Maine businesses host on-site tours for approximately twenty educators.
During lively discussions, business representatives and educators explore the specifics of the rapidly changing
workplace and the implications for preparation of students who already are or soon will be entering it. A quest
for mutual understanding and a curiosity about each other’s mission infuse these discussions and elicit valuable
suggestions and ideas.
• The Building Bridges Program, although it was one of the first of its kind in Maine, is now among more
than thirty in various parts of the state. For those who live in the Bangor Region, it represents one of the most
exciting educational partnership activities available. The program offers 4.5 teacher re-certification credits (CEU's).
