Celebrate Māori Language Week
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2013
Māori Language Week is Monday, 1st July to Sunday, 7th July.
Some suggestions are –
all cell phones are kept in a box after 8.30pm
►
No technology in bedrooms – no laptops, phones,
tablets etc after an agreed time
►
Check your young person’s pages, the history of searches on
your computer
►
Take devices off young people
►
Check the phone is the one they use, not an old one or one
they don’t use
►
Lots of students text late at night, it may not be your child
but others will try to contact them
►
If they use social network sites like facebook, ask.fm or
tumblr, they are likely to get notifications through the night
►
If your young person’s device is Wi-Fi only, then you can
disable your broadband – by turning off your airport or your
wireless router. If you want help with this contact your
internet provider or the school
If you have any other suggestions – please contact the school.
►
Arohatia te Reo is the theme for Māori
Language Week, which means to cherish the
language.
In recent days we have become aware of a
new social media website ‘ask.fm’. We
suggest you have a discussion at home about
this website.
As a school community we would prefer students did not use this
site but this is how NETSAFE recommend students keep safe How can I stay safe on ask.fm?
We recommend that all
young people prevent
anonymous questions
being posted. This can be
done by pressing “Settings”
– “Privacy” and choosing “Do not allow anonymous questions”.
Ask.fm staff have informed
us that it is also possible to
block a person harassing
you, once you get another
question from them. This
can be done by pressing
“block” next to each question.
PRIVACY- taken from http://ask.fm/about/privacy with underline
emphasis added “Your replies are publicly viewable data. Your replies to questions
submitted via ask.fm will be published to other websites. You are
responsible for what gets published. Whatever you enter into
the ask.fm reply box will be published and could be publicly viewable immediately upon your clicking the submit button”.
“Snapshot Cards” will be sent home with all students
in Years 7-10 tomorrow, Friday 5 July.
Students who receive a red card must have it signed
by a parent and returned on Monday.
Senior students will
receive their cards
by email.
We have become concerned at the
number of students who have appointments during school time but have no
parental permission to be released.
KAVANAGH COLLEGE ENVIROGROUP
Kavanagh College Envirogroup is asking for your help. Do
you have any old paint you’d like to get rid of? They
would gladly welcome any donations of
any colour for a variety of projects.
If your child has an appointment during
school time we require you to let us
know.
You can either phone, write a note or sign your student's
appointment card. If no parental permission is given they
will be marked as having an unexplained absence.
Please leave any paint in the main office,
or email [email protected].
Thank you for your help in this matter.

Goal Setting with Tamati Ellison
Last Wednesday we were lucky to have All Black and Highlander
Tamati Ellison come to the school and speak to a group of our
students about goal setting.
Tamati talked the students through his eight step goal setting
structure.

See yourself as that person now
Set grand dream goals
Find out what the first step to take is
Take action now
Listen and learn
Test and measure

Follow through
Another great point that Tamati made was his 7, 50 and 98 rule.
If you just listen you might learn and remember 7% of the content.
If you listen and write down
you might learn and remember 50% of the content.
If you listen and write down as
well as interact (ask questions, discuss etc) you might
learn 98% of the content.
Some valuable life lessons for
our students.
Year 7 & 8 Hockey
The Year 7 & 8 Hockey team continued on
their winning way over the last fortnight with victories
over East Otago High School and Strath Taieri, two
traditionally strong hockey teams.
Goal scorers over the two matches were Nick Parata,
Ellery Campbell, Tom McCallion and Niall Quinn. Niall
distinguished himself against Strath Taieri with a well
taken hat-trick.
Congratulations to Mikayla Scott who
competed for the Greater Green Island
Rhythmic Gymnastics Club at the Otago
Championships last weekend.
Mikayla was third overall in individuals and
won the Otago Trophy.
Her Grade 4 Group were third overall.
Coaches Gemma O’Connell and Aaron Fahey continue to
work hard with this promising group of young sports
people.
Tomorrows game is the final one before the holidays.
Good Luck!
