The Pastor’s Mutterings
Family is everything, especially here in the Beverly community and in
St. Barnabas Parish. Stories, pictures, traditions, gatherings, baptisms, meals,
vacations – these and many more are the events and relationships that bind us
together and give meaning to our lives.
The early church shared our interest in the quality and details of family life.
They wondered about what Jesus was like as a boy, and his life at home with Mary
and Joseph. Only the Gospel of Luke records any stories at all of Jesus’ childhood,
and there is so much more we would like to know. But we can learn a lot from the
little glimpse that is given to us in today’s Gospel.
Only eight days after his birth, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. They made the
difficult five-mile journey because presenting their child to God was a symbol of their gratitude for his birth. They
were thankful parents. They were believers. They wanted to begin their family life correctly before God. While they
were in the Temple, the young family met Anna and Simeon and other people who, like them, cared about the things
of God.
There is an important message here for all of us:
• Do you want your children to get to know good people? Bring them to church.
• Do you want to provide a strong foundation for your children? Take them with you to church.
• Don’t just send them – bring them with you!
• Don’t attend Mass only when it is convenient – it should be a priority.
It is never too early to start this pattern, and it is never too late. God’s people gather weekly at
St. Barnabas, and they are good people to get to know. If it is true that it takes a whole village to raise a child, then
we must pick our village wisely. Mary and Joseph did just that. Their village was not only Nazareth, but the people of
God wherever they gathered to worship. There they found people who helped them raise and instruct their son.
We have, I think wisely, chosen Beverly and St. Barnabas to be our “village.” We thank God for all the Simeons
and Annas, friends and fellow believers whom we have met here. They show us what it means to belong to the family
of God.

Christmas such a reverent and prayerful experience.
A special thanks to the chairpersons of the Art and Environment Committee — Colleen Mulchrone and Barb and Connie
Majeski, and all their volunteers - along with Phil Smith and Jim McDermott and the Maintenance and Custodial Staff
who provided us with a beautiful environment, inside and out, in which to celebrate and pray. Thanks to the Liturgy
Committee - Kitty Carroll, Peggy DuMais, Rosemary DuMais, Hank Hammer, Maria Hibbs, Karen Lux, Cindy Malloy,
Kathy McGarry, Gerri Scanlon, Barb Styczynski, and Lorraine Symonanis who prepare and plan our beautiful liturgies
throughout the year, and to all the Altar Servers, Sacristans, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Ushers who so graciously
served at our Christmas Liturgies.
Thanks to the St. Barnabas Music Ministry, which includes the Children’s Choir, Adult Choir, accompanists, cantors, and
instrumentalists who enhanced our celebrations with their beautiful gift of music. Many thanks to Sandro Tsomaia and
Damian Warshall for their outstanding piano/organ accompaniment at all of our liturgies. And a special thanks to
Mae Schuberth who shared her gift of dance with us.
You are truly blessed and a marvel to us all!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SAFE TRAVELS!
Seven St. Barnabas alumni will be traveling with the
Mother McAuley and Brother Rice choirs toparticipate in
the 40th International Congress of Pueri Cantores, the
official student choral organization of the Catholic
Church, to be hosted in Rome and Vatican City, from
December 26 – January 2. Peter Nagle, Will Thompson,
and Michael Sheridan from the class of 2012; Tyler
Bentley, class of 2013; Nora McIntosh and Emily
Jakubczak, class of 2014; and Andrew Thompson, class
of 2015 join youth from around the world at this choral
extravaganza. Congratulations!

RIGHTS ISSUE OF OUR TIME?
This community film event is open to everyone, with a
suggested age of 13 and over. “40” is a film that best
highlights the issue of abortion in America from a human
rights perspective. In 62 minutes, the creator, John
Morales, looks at 40 years of the effects of legalized
abortion on American individuals, groups, and
communities, without taking a ’religious’ perspective. A
person of any faith, or no faith, will appreciate the style
of this dynamic documentary.

St. Barnabas Grade Spotlight
The second graders worked on a service project in which they wrote Christmas letters and cards to the residents at
Mercy Circle. The cards will be delivered this week to bring smiles and greetings to the religious men and women that
live there. Second grade wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

BABYSITTING SKILLS
Little Company of Mary is offering," Safe and Secure,”
a program for children ages 11 to 14 to learn basic
babysitting skills. It is presented by Kathleen Rynne, R.N.
and Elise Farrell, R.N. Class will be held on December

YEAR OF MERCY
What is Mercy? Mercy is acts of love by which we care
for the bodily and spiritual needs of others while also
recognizing the need for mercy in our own lives.
Pope Francis announced an Extraordinary Jubilee, a Holy
Year of Mercy, to highlight the importance of being
merciful to one another as God is to us. In a beautiful
statement, he reminded the faithful that in this coming
year, we should spend time focusing on the fact that God
is full of mercy. Our call to be in close relationship to God
and to help others see God by how we live our lives.
What the world would look like if everyone were merciful
as God? How might our home, our parish, our
neighborhood, schools, city, country, and world be
different if we spent just a little more time showing
mercy, requesting mercy, and accepting mercy, even
when it might be difficult?
Over the next 12 months you will be invited to explore
the theme of mercy in many ways. We will begin our
Lenten Season with a Day of Mercy on Saturday February
13th. It will be an “open door” invitation to spend as
little as 5 minutes or as much as an hour unpacking the
theme of mercy. It will be interactive, you will move at
your own pace and be suitable for all ages. Watch the

Ministry Pilgrims who represented St. Barnabas at the
National Catholic Youth Conference
God is Good – All The Time – God is Good
As I packed for NCYC the day before our parish left for
Indiana, I had no idea that I was heading towards the
greatest journey of my life. Here, I would learn how to
carry my faith with me everywhere I go.
"God is everywhere you look." When I heard these words
over the 24,000 screaming teenagers in the Colts football
stadium, my perspective of God was changed forever. It
was clear to me now that God did in fact see me and he
did have a plan for me. This was something I never
understood before I made this life changing pilgrimage.
At NCYC, I was taught that God always carries good

The JRYM ski trip is Monday January 18th.
The HSYM is an overnight ski trip on January 29th and
draws about 600 teens from across the Arch. of
Chicago. It is a great event!

intentions for me and my life. This particular
statement will be easy to remember considering it
was screamed by groups of people literally every 2
seconds. "God is good!- All the time!" "All the time!God is good!" It was influential chants like these that
will ring in my ear every time I remember NCYC 2015.
Every day at NCYC, I would witness thousands of
people truly strengthen their faith with God. This is
something I will never forget. These people taught
me that there will always be more room for God and
for my faith and that no one should ever be ashamed
of their love and connection with God.
NCYC 2015 was the greatest experience of my life so
far and I wish I could personally thank all the people
who helped to make this a life changing experience.
But if I were to, I'd have to track down 24,000 teens
and some seriously influential speakers, not to
mention Jesus! Since that would be extremely
difficult, I wish to convey a message to anyone
reading this instead. Let God take you where He
wants you to go. Trust Him. Let no one get in your
way. Your faith and relationship with God is what will
carry you through your lifetime and is above all
