Dear Parents
We would like to thank the Parent Council for all of the wonderful things they organized for
Teacher Appreciation Week last week. They enlisted a number of volunteers and provided treats
for the staff room all week, organized fitness classes for the staff to participate in, and provided a
luncheon for all staff on Thursday. We would like to thank everyone involved in spoiling us all
week long! Our Parent Council is an extremely positive influence on the school – and we’re not
just talking about last week! Annually they raise funds and seek out ways to use those funds to
make our school better and better. The next Parent Council meeting will be the one that most of
the funds from the Scoop-A-Lot fundraiser are dispersed. If you would like to be part of the
process, the meeting takes place on Tuesday March 8th at 7:00 in the HMK staff room – coffee and
babysitting are provided at no charge. We would love to have a few more parents come out to the
meetings – there is no long term commitment if you would like to come and check out a
meeting. If you would like more information about Parent Council, you can contact Cheryl
Beaumont (president 476-2483), Jamie Ellis (vice president 476-3044), or contact the school
office.
We look forward to seeing all parents in the school for the upcoming parent teacher interviews.
Interview sign-up sheets will be out in the next day or two, and teachers will be working on
scheduling interviews during our admin time on March 7th. It is extremely important that all
sheets be returned by the end of this week! Our scheduled conference times are on Wednesday,
March 16th and Thursday, March 17th from 4:30 – 6:30 on both days. During these times, all
teachers will be in the school and available to meet with parents. In order to accommodate all
conferences, most teacher’s conference signup sheets will include times beyond the scheduled
times mentioned above. If you are trying to schedule two or more interviews consecutively, we
would ask that you sign up for times during the scheduled times (March 16th and 17th from 4:30 –
6:30) – and indicate on the signup sheet which other teacher(s) you are trying to coordinate with.
Choosing slots during the scheduled times is the only way to guarantee that all of your child’s
teachers will be in the school! With so many parents being scheduled into a relatively short time,
it is extremely important that all conferences stay on time. Once confirmation has been received,
please make note of the time that your child’s interview both starts and ends. If your conference
nears its scheduled end time and you feel you need more time, please talk to the teacher about a
follow up appointment. If your child receives programming through our divisional speech and
language pathologist, Jennifer Donais, she will be available at the school during the scheduled
interview times on Wednesday, March 16th in the speech and language room.
We hope that you find the interview / conference time valuable, and that you are able to take
some time to review your child’s work and sit down with him or her to set some learning goals for
the last term!

Spelling Club
Spelling Club is now finished for the year. Kailyn Hanke
represented our school at the spelling bee in Winnipeg on
February 26th, and had a great experience at the regional spelling
bee! Spelling Club will start again this fall
for grades 4, 5 and 6 every Monday at
noon. We would like to thank Mrs.
Woods for running the spelling club and
providing the kids with the opportunity to
improve their spelling as they work towards representing our school!
“I Love to Read” Month
February was “I Love to Read” month at HMK. The
theme was “Canada” and the month started with an
assembly in the gym with everyone wearing red and
white. We had numerous activities throughout the
month, including “Stop, Drop and Read”, Canadian trivia, reading
across Canada, spirit week (read a hat day, read a shirt day, and
dress as a book character day), teacher reading exchange, RCMP
reading, famous Canadian displays, and a school wide pajama day.
We would like to thank the RCMP for coming in and reading to
all of the classrooms, and would also like to thank the reading
committee for organizing the entire month!
Superstar Challenges
We would like to thank our grade 6 students and
Mrs. Douglas for organizing “Superstar Challenges”
throughout the entire month. The grade 6 kids took
turns organizing various activities for specific grades
to participate in during recesses. The events were well
run and enjoyed by the students who participated in
them. Great job grade 6!
Curling
Our grade 6’s have spent some time over at the
curling rink this past month! We would like to
thank Donna and Murray Newton, and Betty Ebner
for running two curling clinics with our grade 6 students. The kids had a great time
learning the basics of curling and those who wanted to keep going had
the opportunity to sign up for three noon hour intramural games.
We would like to thank the Neepawa
Curling Rink and Bernie Ross for making
us feel so at home in coming over to the
curling rink!
Matt Masters
We were very pleased to welcome Matt Masters to our school for a
surprise performance with some of our grade 2,
3, and 4 students. Matt was playing at Wilson
Place the evening before, and when asked
about playing at the school the next morning
jumped at the opportunity – at no cost to us!
He talked to the kids and performed a number
of songs for them. It was a great surprise performance that the
kids loved!
Lungs are for Life
We would like to thank Belinda Critchlow for coming
in to do the “Lungs are for Life” presentations to our
grade 4 classes. Mrs. Critchlow talked to kids about the
effects of smoking, as well as ways to resist pressure to
start smoking. We would like to thank the Neepawa
Area Wellness Committee for offering the
presentations to our grade 4 students, and look
forward to the quit-smoking placemats the kids created
to be used in local restaurants!
Festival du Voyageur
On Thursday, February 24th, the grade fives had the opportunity to attend the Festival du
Voyageur in Winnipeg which is the largest French cultural festival in Canada outside of
Quebec. At the Festival, students danced to a Montreal rock band at the Teen Show, and
went on a traditional horse drawn sleigh ride. Students explored Voyageur Park and had
the chance to go on the giant ice luge, tour the ice sculptures, and taste maple taffy. A
special thank you to all of our parent volunteers and to the grade five students for their
excellent behaviour throughout the day! Merci beaucoup!
Paperbag Princess and More
On February 25th our school hosted Prairie Theatre Exchange’s “Paperbag
Princess and More”, which was a play based on the Robert Munsch stories
Thomas’ Snowsuit, I Have to Go, Put Me in a Book, 50
Below Zero, and Paperbag
Princess. It was a great way
to wrap up I Love to Read
Month, with kids young
and old completely
enjoying the show! We
would like to thank
Beautiful Plains School Division for
sponsoring this performance.
“Operation Donation”
Our school is once again participating in “Operation
Donation” this year. Operation Donation is a food drive
that takes place this week until March 4th. Operation
Donation is run by Winnipeg Harvest and is sponsored by
Manitoba Public Insurance, Manitoba Teacher’s Society,
Canada Safeway, and Peak of the Market. All food
collected will go to our local Salvation Army. For all
non-perishable food items collected during the week, Peak of the Market will match
pound for pound with fresh Manitoba vegetables. Food items will be collected in
classrooms all week and at the
end of the week, we will tally it
and deliver it to the Salvation
Army.
Thank you for
sharing what you
can spare!!

All of the noon skating helpers who have come out over the year! It is wonderful that we
get so much support from parents and relatives in making the noon skating program a
success. Please note that March 17th is the last day for noon skating this year. We look
forward to seeing you back at the rink for noon skating next year!
PUBLIC SERVICE
We recently received the new KidSport applications at the school. KidSport’s mission is to
overcome obstacles that prevent young people from participating in sport due to financial
barriers. KidSport helps children between the ages of 5 and 18 to get involved in healthy
activities by providing support for community sport registration fees. To pick up an
application, or for more information, please contact the school office.
