ANNUAL MEETINGS
2017: March 16-19
JW Marriott, Houston, TX
Dear P.A.A.S Members:
It is my honor and privilege to serve as your President for the
year 2016-2017. These are big shoes to fill, recently being
vacated by fellow female otolarngologist, courageous and
pioneering new solo practitioner, Jenny L. Cross, M.D. Our
membership ranks continue to include many pioneers and
researchers in the practice of allergy. Our society is unique,
comprising a diversity of specialists and practitioners with the
common goal of improving health through the management of
allergy and hypersensitivity, and related disorders.
Dana B. Gibbs, M.D.
2016-2017 P.A.A.S. President
The methods and wealth of knowledge taught at P.A.A.S. conferences have changed not only the way I practice medicine but
my own health and life have significanly improved. In fact, I cannot imagine the
satisfactory practice of medicine without them. I know this opionion is shared by
many fellow members, the board and faculty of this distinctive society.
Our members also share a common desire for innovative thinking. Practitioners who
yearn to do more for their patients than prescribe pills or perform surgery face
incesantly increasing economic and professional pressure. Secondary to changes
such as ICD 10, PQRS, ever evolving electronic health records management and
governmental regulations, mainstream medical practices are finding it more and
more difficult to retain their independence.
-1-
One example of governmental interference and stifling innovative thought is the current proposal of USP 797.
The regulations of the compounding pharmacy industry are being revised as I write, without benefit of
congressional oversight. This originated as a result of fungal contamination of intrathecal steroids produced by a
Connecticut pharmacy which was in violation of existing rules and is no longer in business. Big Pharma is taking
advantage of public outcry over this issue to shake out of existence the waiver by which we mix our allergy vials.
If the changes go through as proposed, no one administering injected immunotherapy would be able to legally
continue mixing multi-dose vials or shots “off the board”. A laminar flow hood would be a required purchase.
Additionally, all allergen concentrates would expire within 4 weeks of being opened, which would be wasteful
and an economic loss if not all of the concentrates could be utilized within that period of time.
A campaign by allergy practitioners and our patients who benefit from immunotherapy is now the only
hope to prevent the effective elimination of the primary tool we use to treat our patients. I encourage all
allergy practitioners to urgently request their patients contact their members of congress. This link can be
utilized to determine who they should contact: http://whoismyrepresentative.com/. Have your patients tell
their congressional members how effective their immunotherapy treatment is and that it needs to continue
without further interference in order to maintain proper health. Give them a brief template they can copy
and paste, or a petition they can sign.
This society and its ACCME accredited educational functions provide training that is literally taught nowhere
else. I encourage all members to attend conferences and urge your associates to come and learn something new.
As always, your staff members are welcome to attend the meeting at a discounted rate under their physician’s
membership. I would also encourage you, if possible, to assist in the preservation of the innovative, unique
knowledge this society offers by joining the President’s Circle. Further information and an invitation follow in
this newsletter.
Over the next year, the officers, board and CME/Program Committee will be meeting to ensure our educational
activities for the basic courses are straightforward and desirable for a wide variety of practitioners. I also feel it
is very important to continue educating practitioners and the public about the numerous manifestations and
implications of delayed or cyclic food allergies. It is fascinating to me to watch fad diets come and go with their
various goals and claims. The proponents and users don’t realize that they all work for some people because what
they are, in fact, is eliminating trigger foods more or less by accident. What we do with rotation and neutralization
is unique and when a patient fully understands and adopts these methods, the change in their health can be
profound and enduring.
We must all do everything we can to survive and thrive in the coming times, both for our patients and ourselves.
Together, we can carry on the work of those who came before us, and prepare the way for like-minded colleagues
who will follow in our footsteps.
Dana B. Gibbs, M.D.

2016 Training Course and Seminar Recap:
The JW Marriott Houston hosted the Pan American Allergy Society for the second time. Across the street from
the renowned Galleria, which offers a plethora of specialty shops and restaurants, attendees enjoyed a variety of
places to visit, whether shopping, or dining. P.A.A.S. President, Dr. Jenny Cross and CME Chairman, Dr.
David Sheridan welcomed new members and attendees, as well as some returning long-term members. We were
excited to offer the new “Workshops” focused on food allergies as a concurrent session held on Thursday and
Friday in addition to the “Basic Inhalant Course”. The Seminar included outstanding visiting speakers who
presented timely lectures: W.A. Shrader, Jr., M.D. on Low Dose Allergen immunotherapy, autoimmunity and
Lyme; Richard Lord, Ph.D. on GI microbiome in allergy and asthma; Alan McDaniel, M.D. on endocrine
effect from chronic stress and pain; and Andrew Schlafly, J.D. on the status of our world of medicine. Dr.
Sheridan and the entire CME/Program Committee (Drs. Cross, Gibbs, Gruhlkey, Hasslinger, Hedges, Hotze,
Jaeckle, Lang, Rogers, Saporta, and Wycoff) organized an outstanding curriculum for both beginners and
experienced physicians, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
