How Do You Communicate?
A
s we go to press with this issue of
Chamber Matters, I am wondering
how many readers realized that
they missed a March 2016 issue.
Following our February issue, we decided
to go from a monthly publication to a bimonthly schedule. Note that this issue is
for April/May, reporting on events of
February/March and providing information
and a schedule of coming events for April
and May.
Our reasons for making this change are
based on several factors. Of course time
and costs come into play, but our major reasoning evolves around society’s changing
means of communication. Print media,
such as this newsletter, has a limited outreach compared to Facebook and other
social media outlets. In years past, print
media was the only, and the best, communi-
cation method available to us to inform our
Chamber membership and the public about
business news and events and the work of
the Chamber. We realize if we want to continue and expand the reach of Chamber
news we have to continue refining our
multi-faceted communication program. We
also realize that we have a limited budget
for print cost and personnel time required
to administer all the different communication outlets. In the coming months we will
be evaluating the different ways available to
us to produce, print and distribute the
Chamber Matters newsletter, both as print
media and digital media.
As we are evaluating our options of communication methods, we are evaluating the
content of Chamber Matters. In the past,
newsletter content has been a mixture of
entertaining and informational articles,
reports on events and
happenings and keeping you informed about
coming events. With

Caldwell County EDC Recognizes Accomplishment
T
he Caldwell County Economic
Development Commission hosted
its annual celebration on February
16 at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center
in Lenoir. With Gov. Pat McCrory as the
featured speaker, the Caldwell EDC recognized local businesses and industries, while
also marking the 175th anniversary of
Caldwell County.
The 2015 Industry of the Year Award
was presented to wholesale lumber processor and distributor Associated Hardwoods.
In operation in Granite Falls since 1982, the
company is made up of several subsidiaries,
including Associated Hardwoods, JordanHolman Lumber Company, and Associated
Trucking. Overall, the combined operations
employ more than 140 people.
Recently, the company announced several major expansions, including the acquisition of a Hudson site to allow additional
warehousing capacity as well as fleet service and maintenance. By shifting its trucking operations to this new site, Associated
Hardwoods and its Jordan-Holman lumber
operation began the process of further
expanding its existing Granite Falls facility.
With the added capacity, the company
hopes to dramatically expand production.

Caldwell County will be the new home for Krystal
Engineering – a high-tech manufacturing and processing company that will be based in Granite Falls and ultimately employ
up to 100 people.
Founded by former Caldwell County resident Mark
Rauchfuss, the company engages advanced manufacturing
processes to grow crystals that are utilized in advanced technology, sensors, medical, aerospace, instrumentation, and
industrial applications. The end product is sold to original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs) aroundthe globe.
Caldwell County was selected for the project over sites in
South Carolina and Virginia. N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory made the
official announcement during a ceremony on February 16.

Krystal Engineering announced that it will be locating its

BAKERS WASTE EQUIPMENT
RECEIVES STATE GRANT FOR
EXPANSION
Industrial waste container and compactor manufacturer
Bakers Waste Equipment has received a more than $400,000
grant from the N.C. Department of Commerce to renovate its
current facility in Lenoir and expand its operations.
According to Bakers Waste Equipment President and
Owner Ric Raines, the grant will allow the company to fully utilize its 300,000-square-foot location and to expand its market
reach for the company’s personal “Smarter Trash” product.
Located in the former Broyhill 55/3 plant, Bakers Waste
Equipment will be hiring an additional 42 people as part of the
grant. The company began operations in Caldwell County in
2014 after previously having locations in neighboring Burke
and Catawba counties. The renovations are expected to be
completed by the end of the year.

Truck Driver Hiring and Info Expo, organized in partnership with
Specialized Furniture Carriers, at the JE Broyhill Civic Center in
Lenoir on Feb. 18. There's a nationwide shortage of truck drivers,

CCC&TI Foundation Community Campaign Begins
T
he Foundation of Caldwell Community College and
Technical Institute held its Annual Fund Campaign kickoff
luncheon on Tuesday, March 1 at the J.E. Broyhill Civic
Center in Lenoir.
Featuring community leaders, campaign volunteers, and college faculty and administrators, the event starts fundraising
efforts for the Foundation’s Annual Fund Drive. Peg Broyhill,
Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, offered opening
remarks and welcomed the crowd of supporters. Broyhill also
announced the goal for this year’s campaign as $360,000. “Each
of you is a critical part of our success. You do an amazing job and
your work makes it possible for us to help so many individuals,”
said Broyhill. Broyhill also introduced CCC&TI President Dr.
Kenneth Boham, who is serving as this year’s Annual Fund
Campaign Chair. “We are honored and thrilled to have Dr. Boham
leading this effort. With his leadership we will blast through our
$360,000 goal – our highest goal ever.”
Boham expressed his gratitude to those in attendance for
their work on behalf of the Foundation. “You all are the people
that make this institution the excellent institution that it is. You
are the difference-makers,” said Boham. “Think of the thousands
of lives made better by the work that you have done – it’s
absolutely amazing.”
Deborah Murray, Vice Chair of the Foundation and Director
of the Caldwell County Economic Development Commission,
spoke to the group about the value of CCC&TI in the community.
“Over the past several years, our county has seen an increase in
available jobs, new companies locating in our area and vacant
buildings put back into use. Our unemployment rate has
dropped to its lowest in decades,” said Murray. “We’ve seen the
new blended with tradition and once again we have a strong and
growing economy. None of that would have been possible without

Broyhill introduced each of the team captains for this year’s
campaign. They are Dr. Kenneth Boham, Peg Broyhill, Barbara

Poarch, Mary Frances Sullivan, Guy Walters, Marty Waters and
Barbara Weiller.
Board priorities for this year’s campaign include funding for
scholarships, the Dream Award Program, childcare, student
emergencies, academic support and professional development.

Lenoir Oilers To Play in Walker Stadium
L
enoir Oilers baseball team
will be in action this summer, playing their inaugural
season in Walker Stadium..
The Oilers teams of yesteryear had
a rich tradition of excellence and
winning, playing in Lenoir from
1964 to as recent as 2000. A local
organization, owned by Clifton
Bennett, has acquired rights to the
name and the team will play as a
member of the Carolina Virginia
Collegiate League. A 29-game
schedule will be played from May
28 to August 8 in the original home
of the Oilers at Walker Stadium in
Lenoir. The home games will begin
at 5 pm this season as the group
works to raise funds for lights at
Walker Stadium.

March.

Come and join the cheering crowds! The 6th annual NC Gravity Games will be held
on Saturday, April 23. Racing will commence on Ashe Avenue in historic downtown
Lenoir from 8:30am until 3pm. Admission is free.
Registration for this signature event will be bringing 70 teams from across the state
to Historic Downtown Lenoir to race their gravity-powered vehicles developed from
scratch rather than kits. For the STEM superstars, prizes include not only bragging
rights but tech goodies, medals and trophies.
