May 2014
by Gordon Kohl
Hello Friends:
The beautiful days of
Spring are here. It is a
great time to really
“rock” with our accordions and learn some new
and fresh music arrangements. We are fortunate to be able to share
the gift of music with
friends and audiences
wherever we travel.
Music is a great tool for
communicating with people. Sitting in a Starbucks Coffee House, I
hear a vocal of ‘Moon
River’ from “Breakfast at
Tiffany’s” (1962) which is
sung with piano and a
combo group. This song
was a Junior Band piece
for me at 10 years of
age. The melody was
fresh and inspirational,
then as it is now, years
later.
Find some music to
play that you can connect with. Find the inspiration, build your enthusiasm and then you
will be expressive in
the playing of your song.
I remember watching
and listening to the tremendous talent of John
Denver, The Bee Gees,
Wayne Newton, and
even the great music
legend Liberace. Their
music raised an awareness in the listener,
which helped to bond
with their songs.
Many ALSI accordionists are improving
their performance technique and memorization
skills. Therefore, I hope
to see you playing at
upcoming meetings. By
taking a turn to play for
an audience, you can
elevate your skills and
have a rewarding moment to cherish.
This May meeting on
May 4th will be important to attend.
There will be two wonderful Showcase performances, with open mike
playing opportunities
before the Showcases.
The special artists are
Linda Hibbert and
Heinz Trilck. At the
close of the meeting
there will be a jam session with very seductive
and emotional French
music. I can hardly wait
to jam and hear all the
accordionists play. Bring
a guest. They will be
surprised and pleased at
the level of musicality of
our players. ALSI is a
great activity for all
members and the music
is enlightening to the
“human spirit”. Come
and join us!
Best Wishes,
Gordon —
P.S. Happy Mother’s Day
to all the Moms that are
part of our club. Have
an exceptional and special day!

HAPPINESS AT ALSI
HAPPINESS at ALSI
by Sharon Marotte
April 13 was another fun day at ALSI.
Purple seemed to be the color of the day,
Roy Birdsell even brought some fresh lavender lilacs from his place by Santa Ysabel.
Players around the village were: Al Piselli –
Crider #2, Jerry Odling – Crider #1, Linda
Hibbert – Brandel and Vicki Eriqat – cafeteria. Russell Camp & Bob always help set
up tables & chairs, Al Piselli brings water for
coffee, Jane Ford was a great help in the
kitchen ahead of time. Jack Marotte does
his thing with the sound system and Bill
Barr was the MC for the day.
Mystery Players for the day – Lois

Lahoud on keyboard & Sharon Marotte on accordion played from noon to
one to practice their songs.

First players of the day were Lois &
Sharon – their name might be Nostalgia!
They played Arrivaderci Roma, Tennessee
Waltz/Kentucky Waltz & Choo Choo
Ch’Boogie. The audience seemed to like
their music – yippee.

Juergen Rosenfeld played next – his
songs were: James Last Melody, I Can’t
Stop Loving You, Far Away Places & Auf
Wiederschen, good bye. Juergen & Heldegard are leaving again for Germany and
will not be with us for 3 months. Have a
safe journey, Juergen & Heldegard!

Gordon Kohl & Bob Warner played
together, making for a super duet team.
Their songs were: Body & Soul, Our Love
is Here to Stay, and Polka Train to Vegas.
The last polka sure got folks clapping along.
Al Jacobs played a very nice tribute to
Cole Porter with a couple of his songs:
Night & Day & Begin the Beguine. He also
played a Bossa Nova Medley. Good job,
Al!!

We welcomed a new player to ALSI,
Marilyn Herkins. She played for us Scotland the Brave &
Sloop John B. We
hope you come
back again & again
to play for ALSI.
We had a donut/coffee break
and visited with
our friends. Jane
Ford,
Vivian
Steger and Sharon
Marotte
helped serve and clean up afterwards.

HAPPINESS - Continued
The ALSI Ensemble set up and played several songs after the break. The songs were:
Skyline March, April Showers, Harvest Schottish,
Henrietta Polka, New York, New York, Beer
Barrel, & Adios. Vicki Eriqat was the director.
The audience seemed to like the performance.
Declan Edsel Kasler played a minishowcase following our break. He is 15 ½ yrs
old. His older sister & brother have
played at ALSI
many times. It was
great to see this
family once again.
His songs were:
Edelweiss, Happy
Wanderer, Hungarian Rhapsody,
Dark Eyes, I’ll Take
you home again,
Kathleen,
Long
way to Tipperary,
Kerry Dance, Wild Irish Rose, Jenny Lind, Tarantella, Trompeten Echo Polka & the Entertainer.
Great job, Declan. Come back and play for us
again!!!

Lauren Gardner is another new player
to ALSI. His songs were Star Dust & Lady of
Spain. We
hope that
Lauren
will
join
the
Ensemble
soon. We
love
to
have new
folks come
to
play
and
encourage
everyone to do so.

Diane Polinski, all dressed in purple,
was our last player of the day. Her songs
were Fernando, Rock Around the Clock
boogie and Easter parade.
Gordon Kohl led a workshop with lots of
information about chords, etc. We used these
chords with the songs The Girl from Ipanema
and Once In A While. Handouts were given out
so folks can practice at home. It was a very informative workshop. —

Showcase with
Of Santa Barbara
Accordionist Heinz Trilck has a repertoire of more than 1,000 melodies
— classical, folk, dance and jazz — a selection of which he plays at 10 to
15 gigs a week at 23 senior facilities and rehabilitation places around
town. The native of Hamburg, Germany, 78, began playing the instrument when he was 21. His education ended at the age of 13 when he
became a brick layer because "my father was killed during World War II,
and I was the oldest of five children." In 1964, Heinz Trilck immigrated
to Milwaukee, Wis., with his wife and two children, where he lived until
moving to Santa Barbara in 1977. "I retired seven years ago after I had a hip replacement," said the former owner of
Pacific Estates, a masonry company. Heinz is also a founding member of the Accordion International Music Society of
Santa Barbara, an active group of 56 who play at events like the Summer Solstice parade, French Festival and Danish
Days in Solvang. Admission is $8/members, $10/guests and good for both Showcases. Heinz will perform at 2:30

First of all I really love the accordion. I am thankful to have been a part
of ALSI since about 1988. I found ALSI through my friend Farrie Ann
Nichols. Then I found Gordon Kohl for lessons and was inspired by his
great talents. I first became acquainted with the accordion when I was
about nine year's old. A lady came to our house in Allied Gardens, with
a twelve week lesson program and a rental twelve bass accordion at
Ozzie's Music Studio on El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego. I played pretty
well but after a year or so was not able to read music. My teacher
would play my lesson for me and I was playing by ear only. My father
took me to Bertolino's Accordion Studio. Mr. Bertolino knew I could
not read music and set about to make sure I could read music. He was
a great teacher, and would not play my lesson. He made me learn to read and would dazzle me with his playing skills. I
really liked the way Mr. Bertalino sounded with his professional accordion. I had hopes of playing like him someday. Also, I remember hearing Lou Fanucchi play in the studio and recitals, he was the child prodigy and he inspired me
to practice more. Thanks ALSI for all of the years of great accordion music experience and fellowship that I've enjoyed
because of this great club. "Viva la Accordion"! Admission is $8/members, $10/guests and good for both Showcases.
Linda will perform at 3:15 pm —
