Our Deliverer
The Story of the Exodus
Life is hard. Sometimes very hard. Whether we’re contending with grief or sickness,
temptation or trial, we are challenged and find ourselves in challenging situations. Trouble
comes in many forms: financial stress, parenting issues, marital conflict, relationship woes,
or workplace ethics.
We need a deliverer. A redeemer. A Lord who wins the victory for us, and gives us the
hope and the strength to not only carry on, but to thrive and grow.
The Israelites needed a deliverer when they were enslaved by the Egyptians. The book of
Exodus is the story of that deliverance. God rescued them from slavery, won the victory
over the evil that oppressed them, and claimed them as His own people as He led them to
the promised land.
The Exodus is the premier redemptive event of the Old Testament. But it also is a signpost
pointing to the ultimate deliverance in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is the
one who delivers us and wins the victory for us, dwelling with us as He leads us to the
promised land of resurrection in the new heavens and the new earth.
Our worship series this fall will be on the story of the Exodus. Each week we will walk with
Moses and the people of God on their journey of deliverance. And we will see how these
events point to Jesus our deliverer and His work in our lives today.

Our Confirmation Ministry gets underway on Wednesday,
September 3. The goal of our Confirmation Ministry is to
lead junior high people into a growing relationship with Jesus
Christ, His followers, and His world. Our guides (small group
leaders) include this year Tim Bouchet, Kristi Carey, Lisa De
Young, Kathy Fitzgerald, Lucy Franklin, Derek Irwin, Marty
Meissenhalter and Matt Wingert. The learning event teaching
will be led by Pastor Mike and Sam Troemel. The annual
Confirmation retreat at Mt. Cross in Felton will be September
12-14. Please keep this ministry in your prayers!
New Groups
Parents with young children! We are looking to form a group that
will allow us to fellowship and grow in our relationship with
Christ. We would like to meet as a group to brainstorm how to
move forward with this exciting new opportunity. Please join us
for our first, casual meeting on Sunday, September 14, from 5-7
PM at the home of Thane and Sarah Knutson (2074 Aragon Court)

Hospitality Workers! Do you work on Sunday mornings, and
so can’t take part in the Sunday worship services? Or do you
know someone whose work in the hospitality industry keeps
them from Sunday worship? Dave and Monica Kirk have
started a group that meets on Sunday evenings in their home,
that is aimed at serving those in the hospitality industry who
work on Sundays. This group is open to all regardless of
where you are on your spiritual journey. To find out more,

Wednesday Morning Bible Class
This class, led by Pastor Mark, will begin again on Wednesday, September
3rd. This year we will be studying the book of Galatians. This is a
detailed study as we work our way through this book verse by verse. All who are
available on Wednesday mornings are welcome to join us. Class meets each Wednesday
morning in Room 10 from 10:30 – 11:30 AM.

K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry Update
We are well underway forming our team after having open forums the end of August.
We are submitting handler and caregiver applications to LCC the first week of
September. Next month, the Comfort Dog Ministry team will be meeting on a regular
basis for fellowship and preparing for our dog’s arrival.

Meditation:
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in Him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are
truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free…So if the
Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’ ” (John 8:31-32, 36)
From Two-Kingdom Bondage to One-Kingdom Freedom
Christian stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God and God’s family,
the Church, in managing all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes. (LC-MS)
Last month we talked about growing from transaction to transformation, balancing the
goodness of our actions with the attitude, condition and focus of our hearts. When Jesus is
the Lord of our hearts, we submit to God’s will and grow in maturity as children of our
Heavenly Father. With that identity given to us and secured by the redeeming work of Jesus,
we are free to serve and represent the King through our transformed lives.

In their book, The Sower, (ECFA Press), R. Scott Rodin and Gary G. Hoag lead us further
along the journey explaining in more detail the transformation worked in us by the Holy
Spirit. They point out that our triune God--Father, Son and Holy Spirit--is all about
relationship. God created us in His image and for relationships at four levels: our
relationship with God, our relationship with our self, our relationship with our neighbor and
our relationship with creation. He created us to love God with all our heart, understand our
identity and know our purpose in life as His children, love our neighbor and care for creation.
However, sin entered the world and destroyed those relationships at all four levels. In
addition to turning away from God, denying our purpose in life and hating our neighbors, we
try to be owners rather than stewards of creation. “After the fall, we defined dominion as
domination, rule over as abuse of and subdue as exploit. Our hoarding and over-consumption
of the world’s resources along with our own struggle with money and possessions are all
indicators of our brokenness at this fourth level.” (The Sower, pg. 14)
We want to be in control and own our relationships at all four levels. We want to own
everything, but with ownership comes bondage. “When we believe in our hearts that we
truly own and control any aspect of our lives, we begin immediately to slide into
bondage…The more money you have, the more anxious you become about it. The more
things you possess, the more time you spend insuring them, fixing them, keeping them secure
and worrying about them…And so we divide up life into these two kingdoms; the kingdom
of those things we are willing to let God have control over, and the kingdom of stuff we try to
control ourselves.” (The Sower, pg. 16-17)
Thanks be to our Savior Jesus who redeemed us with His own blood to restore relationships
God intended for us to enjoy. Since our Heavenly Father bought us with the price of His Son
Jesus, we belong to Him—He owns us—and we enjoy the identity He gave us in Baptism.
Because of that identity we want to obey and serve Him and we do so as stewards and not as
owners. We place everything—all parts of our lives—into God’s hands. In this kingdom,
there is only one Lord—everything belongs to Him. God is the owner. The result of living
in this single kingdom as stewards and not as owners, is that we are free to enjoy the
wonderful gift God gives us every day. We don’t have to own or control anything. “It all
begins with a look in the mirror. What is God doing in your life to free you from the
bondage of two-kingdom living?” (The Sower, pg. 19)
Pray: Good and gracious Father, forgive me when I attempt to seize control of any aspect of
my life. Show me where I am in bondage to a two-kingdom lifestyle and set me free. Turn
my heart towards you and surrender to You. Lord Jesus, abide in me, and display Your
character in my life. Holy Spirit, grant me faith and lead me to live as a one-kingdom
disciple and to truly enjoy the freedom as a child of God. Amen.

Be a Missionary with your Mite Box
Mite Boxes in the Narthex has been restocked so please help yourself for
one on the shelf near the big blue wooden Mite Box. Return them the first
Sunday on the month to further God’s work through the LWML. Every cent donated
goes directly to missions, none kept locally. Your giving (& of course your prayers)
helps to bring the 18 Mission Grants Goal of $1.83 million for the period 2013-2015
closer. This brings hope of Jesus to many around the world. You may check the mission

"Save the Date" for the Ladies Tea! The Ladies Tea is on the
calendar for March 7, 2015. The speaker is yet to be announced.
We are working on a couple of themes. Just let your friends,
relatives, neighbors know to save that date, for some fun and a
good time.

Team needed for Lutheran World Relieve Soap Collection
In the last few years St. John’s has done a marvelous job collecting bars of
soap in September and October for Lutheran World Relief. St. John’s was
one of the few churches in Northern CA that collected soap, most of the
other churches did health kits, school kits, sewing kits and of course the much needed
quilts. We truly need help this year for someone to head up the soap collection for this
worthy cause. Duties involved would be taking the collected soap to your home, boxing,
weighing them in proper amounts and taking them to the close collection point (Napa).
Jean Gonzales will help with the preparation, publicity, etc. If you, your family or a
“team” can help with this much needed mission outreach please see Jean at church or call
at 707-731-0774.
Church Women United Clothing Center
Cleaning closets and getting little people ready for school? Please
consider taking gently used items to this volunteer operated center.
They provide, free of charge, to needy residents of Napa County
clothing, shoes and bedding. Residents are referred by the county,
may visit the center every 60 days and can select two grocery bags
of donated goods each time. This facility is operated by volunteers and funded by
generous individuals, churches and organizations in the valley. Urgently needed, men
and children’s clothing. The center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon
at 2473 Second St., Napa.

NEW LOCATION! Due to the owners' telling us
of their plans to sell the Mini Garden Restaurant, the Out to Lunch Bunch
ladies will have their Bible study elsewhere. We will meet the 4 th Friday,

September 26 , at 11:00 a.m. The August meeting will be at Oventi with future plans to
be agreed on – member will be notified if the September meeting is NOT to be held there in
the future. Since the group needs a private room in order to hear and adequate parking,
Oventi can provide that for us. Carolyn Fruchtenicht will teach the lesson, "Living with
Pain. What About Healing?" as presented on page 20 in the summer issue of the Lutheran
Woman's Quarterly.

SERVICE EVENTS
Aluminum Pull Tabs… Don’t forget to save aluminum pull tabs for us.
We see more and more products with these pull tabs so be on the lookout for
them. Remember it takes 1,250 tabs to make a pound. We hope this next
year to collect more than the 19 pounds as we did last year for the Ronald
McDonald House in Sacramento. Our collection, added to the many other tabs donated by
various churches, clubs, service groups, etc. will be sold to help pay the utility bills of the
House. Your efforts will make a big difference in the life of a child as it allows family
members a comfortable, warm, secure place to stay while their child is in one of the
hospitals in and around Sacramento. Keep on pulling and saving those tabs please and
thank you for your past efforts. The collection jar is in the Narthex next to the display
case.
Stamp Collection for Missions Please let Lee Balsiger know if you
are available to help when she receives large batches from a city office in Napa.
Stamps are being processed for a sister congregation in the Southern CA. Their
Lutheran Women Missionary League, in partnership with other LWML’s in that
District, sorts and sells them for mission work. Also, please save your cancelled stamps,
allowing at least one quarter inch around each stamp, otherwise they are of no use to
us. Deposit them in the box in the Narthex. If you have questions, give Lee a call or see
her at church. Thanks for your support of this mission project.
Focused on HIM Quilters continue to meet on the 2nd Saturday
of each month. Please come and join us, for Christian Fellowship,
fun times with others and learning new skills. Call Lois Johnson for

We meet weekly on Sunday from 7-9 PM in the gym. Our
time together includes games, music, food, and Bible study.
This month we will be looking at the message of popular
songs, movies, and celebrities. Friends are always
welcome!
Ablaze is St. John’s youth group for 7th and 8th graders. Our
next meeting is September 19th from 5:00-6:30 PM in the
Faith Chapel. During this time the group will be
experiencing all things summer camp. This will include
group building games, songs around the campfire, and

Our Second Sunday Potluck will be at 11:30 AM on September
14th. Our theme for September is “Apples!” Bring your
favorite apple dish....could be apple dumplings, apple sausage,
pineAPPLE, whatever you'd like! And non-apple dishes are
welcome too! Join your church family and friends for great
food, fun, and fellowship. If you are here that day and didn't bring a dish, please come
and eat anyway! We always have lots and lots of food. God is so good! This is a great
way to have a few minutes to sit and talk with the folks we see every week before and
after church. Hope to see you there!
The theme for October will be German Food - Octoberfest! We're not sure of the date yet,

September is Sepsis Awareness Month! Sepsis is the third leading
cause of death after heart disease and cancer. It is also the most
expensive in-hospital condition in the U.S. costing more than $20
billion each year. Sepsis is your body’s severe response to an
infection usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. The
body’s immune system goes into overdrive and begins to attack the
body. Sepsis is a medical emergency and must be treated quickly and properly for
survival. Anyone can get sepsis but some are at higher risk: people over 65, babies under
a year and people with cancer, liver or kidney disease, alcohol abuse and other diseases
that lower your immune system.
Sepsis can be tricky to diagnose because the symptoms can be very vague in the
beginning or they can mimic other illnesses. People can be sent home before sepsis
develops fully. If your loved one is sent home, watch closely for any signs of
deterioration and don’t hesitate to go back to the emergency or urgent care if needed. To
prevent sepsis: treat all infections seriously, take antibiotics if prescribed and finish the
entire course, don’t take antibiotics without a doctor’s order – this will prevent potential
antibiotic resistance, wash hands frequently, get flu vaccine or other vaccines as
recommended by your doctor, cough into your elbow and not your hand if you are sick,
seek medical help if an illness does not seem to be improving or gets worse.

Get on Track is an annual event which raises funds for St. John’s Lutheran
School’s Association of Parents and Teachers (APT). APT funds many of
the programs at our school such as art, physical education, music,
technology and extra materials for our classrooms. Also, 25% of pledges
raised are contributed to our class-sponsored, non-profit organizations. Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans is partnering with St. John’s Lutheran School by providing $100 for each classroom
charity. Along with raising money, our mission is to involve our children in a service project
while working toward a goal, having fun, and being active!

The 2014-15 School year is underway at last! It has been an exciting
start to the year. Our theme this year is “Hope is our Anchor” based
on Hebrews 6:19, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm
and secure.”
What a blessing it is to teach our students (and their families) the wonderful news of the
“Hope” God has for all of us.
We start this year with 281 students, which is an increase of 16 students over last year!
We thank God for the opportunity to reach more children (and their families) with the life
giving “Hope” of the Gospel message! Below is a list of our faculty and staff for the

First Ever Fall Musical!
Disney’s Peter Pan, Jr. is an adaptation of the classic 1953 animated feature film based
on J. M. Barrie’s timeless story! Come and meet the fun and magical characters and
hear catchy and touching songs, like “You Can Fly,” “Following the Leader,” and “Never
Smile at a Crocodile.” Our students are excited to share their God-given talents with you!

floats for the 2015 Tournament
of Roses Parade.
Have you ever considered joining nearly 5000 Petal Pushers as they spend the days between
Christmas and New Year’s Day helping to decorate several of the floats that will be seen in the
