SPONSORSHIP OVERVIEW
MAY 1 – MAY 31, 2016
MISSION
The mission of Atlanta Jazz Festival is to present the rich heritage of
jazz music and to educate the community on jazz as an original form
of American culture.
Produced by the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs,
Atlanta Jazz Festival presents a variety of outlets to experience and
learn about jazz music with the Memorial Day Weekend concert and
festival as the culminating event.
The Atlanta Jazz Festival has evolved into a season of educational,
social and community events with jazz music as the unifying influence
that attracts over 500,000 people during the “31Days of jazz.
The Atlanta Jazz Festival is a destination event for the city which
attracts music lovers from around the City of Atlanta, across the state
of Georgia and from the entire Southeast.
“The Atlanta
Jazz Festival is
our homage to
the legacy and
tradition of a
true American
art form.”
– Mayor Kasim Reed
OVERVIEW
The Atlanta Jazz Festival is an annual celebration of music, art and culture, highlighting the
heritage of jazz music. The Atlanta Jazz Festival includes a series of events beginning in
March of each year and culminating each Memorial Day weekend, in one of the largest free
jazz festivals in the country.
HISTORY
Atlanta Jazz Festival was established with the help of Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson in
1978. The city’s commitment was to present a free jazz festival – straight ahead, avantgarde, improvisational, harmonically and rhythmically complex and beautiful. It would
showcase the best performers of “pure” jazz, eschewing the genre blends.
Thirty-eight years later, the Atlanta Jazz Festival has stayed true to that mission. As the
genre has birthed many other forms, jazz still lives on and continues to evolve in its truest
form. Atlanta Jazz Festival is one of the few places in the country where masses of music
enthusiasts, families and culture lovers gather year after year to hear and experience this
great American musical tradition.
MAY 1 – MAY 31, 2016
FESTIVAL SEASON | MAY
AJF 31 Days of Jazz
Throughout the month of May, Atlanta Jazz Festival partners with restaurants,
lounges and entertainment venues around the city to present the best in local jazz. These
intimate concerts and special evenings are a highlight of the AJF season.
Neighborhood Jazz Series
The Neighborhood Jazz Series is an Atlanta Jazz Festival signature concert series
held every weekend in the month of May. Each Neighborhood Jazz Series mini concert is
presented by a City of Atlanta Councilmember in a neighborhood park within their district.
This series brings the jazz experience into communities throughout the city while giving
families an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Atlanta's parks. MARTA MONDAYS
The MARTA MONDAYS signature concert series presents performances by local
jazz artists at selected MARTA train stations during peak periods of ridership.
Late Night Jazz Jam
After enjoying all-day jazz presented in Piedmont Park, contemporary jazz music
lovers make their way to the highly anticipated Late Night Jazz Jam. This live jam session
features an exciting contemporary jazz artist, as well as a DJ who melds popular music
with jazz standards for a musical experience that both preserves and celebrates jazz
music’s history of late night jamming. MAY 1 – MAY 31, 2016
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CONCERT
For 38 years, Memorial Weekend has been reserved for Atlanta Jazz Festival with
multiple days of free music, food, art and family fun as 200,000+ music lovers descend
on Piedmont Park.
In 2016, the Atlanta Jazz Festival will open on Friday, May 27 with an evening
concert that kicks off the festival and the holiday weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be
full days of performance, beginning in the afternoon and running into the late evening.
The jazz festival Main Stage features some of the top named jazz performers in the
country. In past years, Herbie Hancock, Ahmad Jamal, Roy Ayers, Tito Puente and Tito
Puente, Jr. have all played the jazz festival Main Stage. Tentative acts for 2016 are on
pages 11 and 12.
The International Stage features musicians from all over the world including Cuba,
France, South America, Africa, and Mexico. This lively presentation of jazz music culture
is a display of Atlanta’s cultural diversity. Tentative acts are on pages 13 and 14.
The Local Stage will present young aspiring Jazz and Jazz related musicians
performing covers of great Jazz standards as well as their own exciting compositions.
Between the two stages, patrons walk through our Arts Marketplace, where they look
forward to scouting rare finds and collectible art works directly from local artists. And no
festival is complete without funnel cakes and slushies! AJF Concessions feature all of
those edible summertime favorites that make festival memories.
The Branded Lounge will offer upscale food and beverage and comfort stations as well
as state of the art video and sound to paying guests in a comfortable environment with
excellent sight lines to the stages.
Families enjoy our Kid’s Zone with games and activities throughout the afternoon in the
Piedmont Park Meadow. Our artists and special guests are treated to the exclusive AJF
VIP Lounge with a live feed of festival performances and daily catered food and
beverages.
Atlanta Jazz Festival is a complete experience with something for everyone. It is a
celebration of music, but it is also a celebration of Atlanta’s historic culture of community.
