2014 Epilepsy Association Annual Report
The Epilepsy Association
2014 Annual Report
“Beyond the Storm”
Dear Friends,
The Epilepsy Association embarked on an initiative a few years ago directed at the ongoing challenge of raising
awareness of epilepsy—our Mural Project. The idea behind the project was to generate community dialogue
about epilepsy and create a piece of art for the community at large that would provide a glimpse into the life
experiences of those affected by epilepsy. In 2014, our beautiful 8’ high by 48’ wide public mural (Beyond the
Storm) by artist Katherine Chilcote, was completed and hung on the exterior wall of the agency office building
located on Prospect Avenue. The mural represents many voices of those in the community who came together to
describe and develop images that could portray the journey of epilepsy. The imagery for the mural was crafted
around the themes of healing, overcoming difficulty, and hope.
2014 concluded the agency’s 2012-14 strategic plan. We served more people and raised more funds for services
but the challenge of raising awareness of epilepsy within the greater community continues for us. There was an
overwhelming interest from agency staff and the Board of Trustees as we discussed our 2015–17 plans to use the
mural as an important tool to help achieve this end. It is our desire to elevate the utility of the mural and use its
imagery as a vehicle that combines art with education, facilitates dialogue about epilepsy and builds a greater
awareness and understanding of the disorder.
2014 was also the first full year for our Kids and Family program. This service brought us back to our roots by
re-establishing direct services to support parents and kids managing an epilepsy diagnosis. Our P.I.K.E.S. group,
which stands for Parents Inspiring Kids with Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders, is a monthly parent support group
that was established to allow parents to meet others dealing with similar issues—to share hopes, dreams and
struggles and to get and give support to each other. We look forward to seeing this program grow.
The Epilepsy Association is the only community-based provider of social services for adults who have epilepsy
and a mental health diagnosis nationally. In 2014 we recommitted our efforts to providing care to our adult
population in need of specialized case management services. We increased the number of new clients to this
service by 25% over 2013.
Raising awareness and building community is not an easy task to accomplish. Our dedicated and loyal
volunteers were up to the task and through their on-going efforts to help people with seizure disorders; the
Association was able to grow agency programs. We could not be where we are today without the epilepsy
community assisting the agency and each other.
The Epilepsy Association was established more than 40 years ago. Throughout these years we have witnessed
numerous clients and families, exhibit tremendous courage and perseverance in dealing with what epilepsy has
brought to them. We look forward to more years of service in the community as our job is far from complete.
Thank you for your continued support of the agency and our services. We look forward to another exciting year
and we hope you will join us for the next chapter!
Regards,
Peter A. Nelson

About the Epilepsy
Association
Our Mission
and Purpose
The Association was started in the mid1950s by parents of children with epilepsy,
under the name Parents Crusade Against
Epilepsy. It later became the Committee of
Epilepsy of the Family Health Association. In
1972, the Committee on Epilepsy became an
independent agency supported by funding
from the Cuyahoga County United Way
Services.
Mission: For children, adults and families in
Northeast Ohio impacted by epilepsy we will
raise awareness in the community, provide
education, advocacy and direct services that
lead to an increased understanding of the
disorder and to better management of the
condition, resilience, personal fulfillment,
independence and the ability to contribute
meaningfully to the community.
The agency is licensed by the Ohio Department
of Mental Health, is a funded agency of
United Way Services, and is accredited by the
Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities (CARF). CARF is an international,
independent, nonprofit accreditor of human
service providers, and CARF-accredited service
providers meet the highest national and
international standards of quality. The agency
has held this CARF distinction for 29 years.
Purpose Statement: We believe education
and awareness are imperative to treatment,
acceptance, equitable division of resources
and the inherent right of every individual
impacted by epilepsy to lead a happy, healthy
and productive life.
The staff of 8 professionals, along with many
volunteers, provide the numerous services of
the Epilepsy Association.
The Epilepsy Association is not affiliated with any national organizations. The agency is a designated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit
corporation. As a cost savings measure, the Epilepsy Association shares its office space with the Kidney Foundation of Ohio. All
funds raised by the association stay here in Northeast Ohio providing service in 11 counties which include: Cuyahoga, Geauga,
Lake, Lorain, and parts of Ashland, Ashtabula, Erie, Huron, Medina, Richland, and Trumbull.

Public Awareness & Events
• Winter Walk for Epilepsy: Our community event is
held annually at the SouthPark Mall in Strongsville
and gathers over 500 community members, parents
of children with epilepsy, and individuals affected
by epilepsy. The Winter Walk is an indoor, 2-mile
Walk where participants form teams and collect
pledges that support our programs and community
services. Each year, the Winter Walk committee
selects a featured family and highlights their story
as a way to increase awareness about epilepsy
throughout the community.
• Purple Day® March 26: Purple Day® is celebrated in
80 countries; the Global Epilepsy Awareness Day,
or Purple Day®, focuses the world’s attention on
epilepsy. We celebrate Purple Day on March 26 and
raise awareness in NEO by organizing a grass-roots
campaign and supporters host mini-fundraisers
throughout the city with a call to action being wear
purple to show support and help raise epilepsy
awareness.
• eRACE 5K and 1 Mile Race & Family Fun Day:
The eRACE is a family-oriented 5K and one mile

while soliciting donations to support the Epilepsy
Association. Races can be held anywhere in the
world and are not limited to those in the Cleveland,
Ohio area.
• Reverse Raffle: This is a casual, after-work event
with the opportunity to win a main board prize
and other side board prizes. This event helps raise
money to fund agency programs.
• Annual Gala: This annual event is held in November
as part of the National Epilepsy Awareness

in attendance and our Legacy Award is presented
to recognize a person/medical professional and
corporation who make outstanding contributions
in the field of epilepsy.

Client Achievement Award—Robert Burtin
In June 2014, Robert Burtin received the
client achievement award at the Association’s
Annual Meeting. Robert came to the Epilepsy
Association in January 2013 through our
Information and Referral program and soon
became a client in our Case Management
program. Robert’s epilepsy and mental health
symptoms were creating barriers and increased
challenges in his life and he needed support.
Robert struggled keeping eye contact, finishing
thoughts, and had significant memory
difficulties. His anxiety kept him from doing
daily tasks and having interactions with other
people. He lost the motivation to do things that
he previously loved. His symptoms were so
extreme it caused him to be unable to work.
Despite all his struggles Robert continued to
diligently work with his Epilepsy Association
case manager and quickly began making
process. He was put on appropriate medication
and later was approved to return to work.
Robert was able to obtain and maintain medical
benefits and social security disability benefits.
He has shown great strides in independence
by taking control of his life despite living with
epilepsy and mental health diagnosis.
(l to r) Kathleen Sanniti, 2013 Board President, Robert Burtin,
Kelley Needham CEO
Robert has blossomed in the short time he
has been with the Epilepsy Association. He
is an inspiration and a magnificent example
of what results can come from our Case
Management program.
