Panoplie CD Release Party
d:qliq, 17 rue du St Esprit, 26 73
62, 20h,
A Panoplie Evening, with Emilie
Bold, Locas in Love, Pertubazione and Couchgrass. A Panoplie
Evening Emilie Bold (F-Chanson
Française) Emilie Bold is a fairy
right out of Northern France. With
gentle determination, she takes the
hearts of her listeners by storm. Her
one-eyed cat and her guitar are her
companions when she sets out to
bring her songs to the world: soft,
airy melodies with an angelic voice,
somewhere between Emiliana Torrini and Mazzy Star. Perturbazione
(I-Pop) Perturbazione are basically
six friends who have been jamming
together for several years before
putting out their first full-length
album “Waiting to happen”. The mixture of gentle cello-driven pop and
nostalgic lyrics established them as
the Italian answer to Belle & Sebastian. But far from being only mellow,
they will surprise you with their
energetic live shows. Couchgrass
(L-Rock) Their motto “Couchgrass
rocks” says it best – this five-piece
2
is a rockband with a groovy rhythmsection, laid-back guitars and an
energy-loaded front-woman. Their
two self-produced albums “Motel
Love” and “King Camden took
a brush and drowned his hands
in gasoline” give an overview of
their qualities, but it’s live on stage
that they’re the most convincing.
Locas in Love (D-Pop Rock) Locas
in Love is a Cologne based four
piece: American independent rock
meets German lyrics and generates
a refreshing, poppy sound full of
friendship love and rock’n`roll.

Cinephile
A Glasgow based duo formed back in 2001, they have to date released one EP which sold
out and a single ‘what becomes of us..?’ (currently available), which was featured on CSI;
Crime Scene Investigation (US Drama series).
“Cinephile’s sound is derived from and inspired by the atmosphere created on the silver
screen. Their music has been described as “the soundtrack to a film which doesn’t exist”,
the eerie sonic reflection of a visual medium. Their compositions are a means of getting
away from just writing music. They are inspired by the thought that their work generates
an atmosphere and depth of feeling that instils something beyond visual interpretation,
appearing differently to each individual listener.
How did you get started?
As cinephile? Through an ad in the local what’s on guide.
What ingredients do you need to mix together to produce the recipe of your sound?
500g kenny
500g susie
500g time
a pinch of patience
a ladle of luck
a pot of tea
Did your first gig make you hungry for more?
Oh yes. Probably something to do with the fact that it was in the slam tent at Scotland’s
biggest festival, T in the Park, supporting FC Kahuna, Ritchie Hawtin, Green Velvet and
Orbital.
What’s the biggest ‘cock up’ to date?
mmm…well, one night a few years back, we were working from the old cottage, someone
gave us an mpc to try and we were sketching out some ideas for a live set. We had been
working away for around 3 hours and had a good, solid idea on the go. I got up to leave
the room and tripped over the cable ripping it out of the back of the mpc. Not good. We
managed to salvage a little of what we had and continued to work away. A little while later,
I leant over to switch the electric heater off and accidentally switched the mpc switch off!
We couldn’t believe it, decided to pack up, go to bed and vowed never to use an mpc again.
Jean-Paul replaced Kim after his departure to the UK. His enthusiasm
and influences changed the sound of HNV for the better. It’s only at this
point that they felt ready to present themselves to the public. Their first
real concert was at the Emergenza festival 2003 where they reached
the finals, to everyone’s surprise. This opened new doors and the
same year they performed on the main stage of Rock Um Knuedler as
well as at the infamous E-Lake festival.
Although this was already a huge success for a Luxembourgish band
they weren’t satisfied just yet. The mission was to get known outside
of this small country and prove that Luxembourg isn’t popular just for
banks, so they started to record songs at Charles’ home studio. But,
due to A-level preparation (talented and studious!) it took them longer
than expected to complete their second album (although they like
to refer to it as the debut album since it’s the first one to be pressed
rather than burnt).
With 4 members currently at university in the UK, Germany and Switzerland they don’t have much opportunity to perform to audiences.
Holy National Victims released their double album “take this ride or you
will never know” on 13 September 2006. “We are a young Luxembourgish band just starting out and trying to get noticed. Visit us on the
internet and support us. Spread the word of Rock’n’roll!”
Line-Up:
Alain S: vocals, Arnaud F: bass, Charles S: guitar, vocals, keys, Francis J: guitar, Jean-Paul M: drums
What would be the icing on the cake?
Playing live to all our original and new-found myspace fans around the world. Oh, and a
cherry on the top of course.
buy the album online at www.wingedskull.com or at Olliewood Skateshop Luxembourg Ville.
Describe your music as if it were a fine wine.
Cinephile is a blend of dark tones with magical highs. It is ready to be consumed now, but
will stand the test of time. It would pair well with a good independent record label or a
mushroom dish. It has a huge intensity on the pallette with a finish that lasts forever.

The cornerstone for Holy National Victims was laid on a cold winter day
in 1999. Charles S and Francis J discovered a mutual passion for rock
legends like Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Since both were playing the
guitar, the next logical step was to form a band. Lucky as they were,
they found an equal-minded drummer, Kim J, and bassist, Arnaud F, in
their class. The perfect singer for HNV turned out to be Alain S, an old
kindergarten friend of Francis.
What is it that inspires you to make your music/sound?
All the positive energy surrounding it.

Atelier, 54, rue de Hollerich, 49-5466, 20h, €24,
Think of what makes music great.
Originality, vision, passion, and
a distinct voice, the ability and
power to move you... In this regard,
Hooverphonic emerges as a great
band with a remarkable, haunting sound. Hooverphonic caught
Luxembourg’s crowds by storm in
the past. Hooverphonic is oblivious
to trends, and both that attitude
and their favoured combination of
old-fashioned melodies and almost
futuristic samples and rhythms,
lends the band a timeless quality to
make great pop songs that have a
prominent, distinctive atmosphere.
They are regulars to sell out den
Atelier. Don’t hesitate then to get
tickets for one of the most delightful
pop shows around this year! www.

Space Invaders Contest. The Atari
2600 was released in October
1977 and was the first successful
video game console to use plug-in
cartridges instead of having one or
more games built in. It was wildly
successful, and during the 1980s,
“Atari” was a synonym for cool
during this era!
Space Invaders was one of the
most popular games for the Atari
2600. This evening we will step
back in time and host the first ever
Ambient is a musical genre that, like most modern
genres, is an eclectic mix of predecessors. Starting way
back (sometime) when… offerings like Ambient 1/Music
for Airports (Eno), an album developed for a sound
installation in a New York airport to help defuse stress
and tension, hover closely to the origin of the genre.
The name initially arose in an essay by Brian Eno and
it was intended to avoid categorisation with the likes of
“Elevator music” and “Muzak (famous for banal music
distribution to department stores and such like up until
the late 90s)” and probably modern day easy listening
supremos, the Light House Family. Well you wouldn’t
want to be categorised there, would you?
Ambient is a personal musical preference, and my
Walkman of 10 years ago was regularly loaded with cassette tape compilations. Who remembers those clunky
things? Skipping forward 10 years into an age of fuss
free mobile music, I recently discovered www.jamendo.
com and in amongst the freebies I was downloading,
low and behold, I discovered an ambient gem.
Melodic, haunting and harmonious and best put by
KillerX, “I’m an instrumental aficionado, and this album
redefined speechless music.” Perhaps a bit strong on
the ‘redefined’ bit, but you get the picture!
Currently unsigned, multi-talented artist Vincent Girès,
who resides in Belgium, has two of his three albums L’autre endroit and Encre - available for free (yes folks
FREE) on the aforementioned website.
Sit back and enjoy!

differs a lot from his previous work.
His love for Egberto Gismonte and

Do I look like a jazz fan?
I met Gast Waltzing, Luxembourg’s very own Jazz aficionado for the
first time at 6am in Liquid Bar, après a somewhat overly commercial
blues and jazz rallye, whilst seeking solace with Stinky Lou, the Goonmat, and Lord Bernado. (The band where the guy plays a washing tub
(www.stinkylouandthegoonmat.com), I kid you not!)
Anyway, suitably liquored up, a conversation ensued about Jazz.
OMG… Melt down! My loathing of this musical genre had long time entertained my paranoid obsession that I wasn’t musically astute enough
to ‘lend it my ears’. My uneducated opinion was that jazz was to music
what the turner prize is to art. We are supposed to champion it, nod our
heads with an air of pretension, squeeze into some grey shiny suit, and
blather on about the musical genius of it all. It’s like attending a maths
convention; there is a purpose but nobody has quite worked it out yet…
This chance meeting with Gast led to a week of jazz dialysis, and not
all of it of the saccharine variety. Within this mix of various artists was
an offering from Largo featuring GW himself. I’ll admit, it was the last
to be played, but I did lend it my ear and to date have done so several
times. Best described as a marriage of ambient electronica and funk…
oh yeah and jazz. I’d be letting the side down (that’ll be my side) if I go
henceforth and sound off about the genetic makeup of this album; its
roots; its likeness; its blah, blah (I’m still on a jazz field trip remember)… I will say that I found aural aesthetic in this album, something
that surprised me. And I was astonished, paranoid obsession aside,
that I had actually hit the the ‘play it again’ button. With this in mind I
am just going to propose you listen to the album yourself. * It’s good….
Long Journey by Largo featuring Gast Waltzing is available on Warner
Records.
* Rest assured, if I didn’t like it, it wouldn’t be here.

Pfaffenthal, 20h30, Presale €19, On

Blues harmonica player, vocalist,
and songwriter Gary Primich is
among a rare breed of musicians
on the blues scene today — those
who learned directly at the feet of
the masters and proved themselves on the mean streets and
ghetto club stages of Chicago. A
dedicated musician who not only
reveres tradition but forges his own
innovative sound, Primich honed
his meaty, fat-toned harmonica
chops and energetic R&B vocal
style at Chicago’s storied and
legendary Maxwell Street Market.
Performing there in the late ‘70s
and early ‘80s along greats like Big
Walter Horton, Johnny Littlejohn,
Sunnyland Slim, and John Henry
Davis, Gary received a first-hand
blues education that could never be
taught in a classroom. Support from

“The fearsome, word-and-thoughtdefying banality of evil” happens
over and over every day somewhere
or other, sending back its now
distant echoes through the sanitised
filter of the media image. Utopias
gone astray, political and/or religious
forms of authoritarianism, repression
and violence on minds and bodies
melt into the magma of current
affairs. As an alternative to prevalent
information, artists are raising the
question of their role, the scope of
their engagement. As actual players
rather than witnesses, they ensure
a form of transmission that goes
beyond textual and literal demands.
Lida Abdul (Afghanistan) and Tania
Bruguera (Cuba) respectively
engage in a reflection on their
country’s situation, and tackle
performative art head on, bringing
their body into play and putting a
political slant on what they have
to say. Between the experience of
exile and regular returns home, they
address the question of one’s roots,
one’s cultural identity, displacement,
and take on a role of player-cumtransmitter that extends well beyond
the context of their own country.
Performances or installations,
whatever the preferred device, Lida
Abdul and Tania Bruguera break
with the distancing of images; we
are destabilized, disturbed, and flip
for a while into a cathartic, albeit
pretty artificial experience. Here for
the first time in a joint exhibition,
they stress the importance, now
more than ever, of questioning
images, casting doubt on and
subverting the dominant and official
rhetoric. Emily Jacir and Renaud-
Auguste Dormeuil, each in their
own way, carry on this incitement
to vigilance, this questioning of the
notion of commitment. Disregarding
frontiers and periods, their reflection
on the refugee figure evokes control
and constraints brought to bear on
people and bodies, separation and
uprooting. Free guided tours on Thu
19h and 20h, Sun 16h and 17h.

Sigur Ros
Where I come from, Iceland is a place where mothers
shop for frozen foods, ice cream and economy boxes of
Mr Kipling cakes. Years of yawning through geography
classes taught me that Iceland was also a place often
described as the most lunar experience on earth.
In musical terms, Iceland is probably still best known for
its 1980s export, the Sugarcubes, featuring pop oddity
Bjork. In recent years, Sigur Rós (pronounced See’er
Rose) have been adding their name to the list of famous
Icelandic exports with their freaky trip rock featuring
songs with lyrics comprised of a language they made
up themselves. While this might not leap out as a PR
and marketing man’s dream job, add in the fact that
the songs seldom fall short of the 6 or 7minute mark,
making any radio plugging tasks nothing short of a
nightmare.
Nightmare is a word I stumbled upon more than a few
times while doing my research before we met Sigur
Rós. They are notoriously monosyllabic and extremely
introverted in their approach to selling themselves.
Interviews often degenerate into yes/no sessions. As
I pondered what to ask, it dawned on me that with my
reasonably strong west coast Scottish accent where
people often misunderstand me was I really the best
person to interview Sigur Rós? Probably not, but interesting, well, hopefully it would be....
From the bare-footed stage performances to the fact
the “Jonsi” (singer/guitarist) plays the guitar using a
violin bow, nothing seemed remotely standard about
Sigur Rós. The violin bow had me thinking of Led
Zeppelin but there is no standard guitar rock to be
found. The eccentric singing style and tripped out
whale like sounds had me thinking Radiohead but
it’s typically slightly less intense and, as Liam Gallagher one described Thom Yorke as a “googly eyed
little fucker”, with Sigur Rós, thankfully there are no
“googly eyes” on display.
As you can imagine, the amount of contradiction with
an act this untypical is quite impressive, relentless
in their refusal to change or play the corporate rock
game, they are actually signed to a major label. Even
more impressive is the dismissiveness about their
collective output. “Our songs are about nothing,” they
proclaim. The complete lack of desire to succeed
has seen them cut their touring from the long gruelling schedules normally associated with bands at this
level down to 3 and 6 week stints.
Commercial success, or fringe amounts of it, found
its way to Sigur Rós with their most accessible album
to date, Takk. While many bigger names in music are
waxing lyrical about the genius in their soundscapes
– supposedly Chris Martin of Coldplay had their
records playing in the background while wife Gwyneth Paltrow gave birth - the commercial radio station
still seemed nothing short of sceptical.
We met up with Sigur Rós in Luxembourg to discuss
life on the road, life off the road, imploding band
stories, flirtations with fame and a desire to be awkward in the face of stardom. Here is what they had to
say…
Eddie Leonard: After many years of making music,
was there a definite intention to make Takk more accessible if not commercial?
Sigur Rós: No, No, definitely no, it is... just how it
happened.
So was that due to a different vibe in the studio?
What had changed?
Yeah, yeah, we just make music and when you
make music all the time you get better and better at
making music, so I think that was kind of the vibe.
Previous reviews have called it everything from your
pop album to your rock ‘n roll album. What did the
band see it as?
I don’t know, yeah it is rock n roll sometimes... but
I’m not really into discussing the music.
How do you combat the radio play problem? Would
you do shorter songs?
Now is the first time we’re getting radio play actually,
mainly in the UK, but not too much. Yeah we have
problems but you can’t think about that too much....
Is it deliberately anti-commercial?
No no we just do the music like it is. Be adventurous.
So have you ever tried to make a 3-minute pop song?
No no we don’t really try to do anything. We just see
what happens.
Do you still say that your songs “are about nothing”?
I like the idea that people connect to the music and
think about things but no, the songs are not about
this; we all have our own ideas.
What about people’s perceptions of the songs? Do
you ever laugh at what some people think the songs
are about?
No ‘cus they are about nothing, so it is only people’s
ideas.
Do you ever write negative or angry songs then?
Seeing as you’re far better known now than when
you started out, is there more pressure to make an
album a specific way. Is there a difference in being
popular from trying to become popular?
No, no we just always see what happens. I think when
we write music we have to get into a certain state of
mind you know? It’s very hard to pinpoint an exact
emotion, it’s always open.
No not really. Who do you mean from?
Is there more from yourselves, pressure in the group?
You are quite famous for one-word answers, so if you
could choose one word what would it be after a bad
interview?
No, no, not really
Probably tired you know?
What about pressure from major labels. You do have
a major label deal in the USA?
What about after a good show, how would you sum
that up in one word?
No, no, we wouldn’t have signed for this label if that
were the case. EMI knew what they were going into
with us, so it’s just the same.
Oh, energetic probably, good.
In previous years you seemed to have spent a long
time touring compared to now, although you say it’s
because of people having families. Is there also an
element of not being too close together for too long
to minimise tension in the band?
All about the families, yes. We try to keep it as short
as we can, but still economically ok.
Yeah, short touring becomes more costly, how do you
balance this?
We just try to make it all work out?
So you have a large merchandising stall, then?
Ha ha, yes yes, we try...
What about people leaving your show early, what
word would you have for them?
I don’t know, eh...
Do you wonder what they think?
I don’t really see anything. I’m concentrating.
Eddie Leonard
If you like this try...
A Northern Chorus
Delays
My Morning Jacket
Raining Pleasure
Does the shorter touring help keep you settled into
life in Iceland? It must be very different from the
quiet life when you’re on the road?
Yeah, eh, on the road there is the lifestyle, we just try
to get into it, other times we just relax and don’t do
anything, you know?

Neumünster Abbey consisted of
a church and 4 wings enclosing
an inner courtyard. At the end of
the 18th century, after the French
Revolution, authorities expropriated
the Church of Saint John, the abbey
was altered so as to house a military
hospital which functioned until
1867. After the State took over the
premises, Neumünster was used
as a prison for male inmates up to
1980. After extensive restoration,
the whole complex is now used as a

David Goldrake is synonymous with exquisite, high concept magic. Characterised by his
spiritual and physical dexterity, his natural ease and elegance allow him to engage any
audience. Uniting ancient traditions with a unique modern style his shows, whether big
or small, take on new dimensions. About to embark on a tour of Luxembourg we (the
royal UPFRONT) caught up with him to dispel any myths and mysteries, or perhaps to
create them!
For Luxembourg’s David Goldrake, magic was an escape from reality.
I discovered magic at 8 and had an instant attraction to it. Thinking about it now, if I
hadn’t found magic I would be an actor, a stuntman or (laughs) a Buddhist monk, or
maybe a stagehand or perhaps some kind of recluse. With magic, it is not just about
being on stage but the mystery of things, the message I convey and the ability to take
away people’s worries for one or two hours.
On starting out
I started with simple stuff. I discovered my first trick in a children’s magazine. It was
fun to practise and watching the reactions of people was interesting and gratifying.
The magazine was monthly and I developed enough interest that I craved the next issue
just for the next trick. When it stopped I started looking for something more. I started
looking into books to find new tricks and new directions. It was mostly about discovering secrets, knowing more stuff, knowing more tricks, learning how to do them. It
developed into an interest that became really strong at about 13 or 14. I didn’t see it as
an art form then, it was just a hobby, but I knew that I wanted to do it as a profession
someday. I wanted to be a magician!
The history of magic
I didn’t at first realise the message of magic, that what we do is basically tricks for
people, but if you think about the origin people don’t realise what an important role
magicians have played in history. Inventions, ‘spying plots’, and some of the greatest
historical secrets have been done or uncovered by magicians involved in deception and
tricks, and they have also been hired by ‘the’ agencies. It is a very rich thing. It is fascinating to me. It is something I draw upon a lot to inspire me for new props or new ideas.
Is magic going through a revival thanks to the likes of the Harry Potter phenomenon,
Lord of the Ring movies and the upcoming “The Illusionist”?
I don’t really have an answer to that. Unfortunately, the general public doesn’t view
magic positively. If I tell people that I’m a magician, they kind of look at me strangely.
There are the big stars like David Copperfield, and Siegfried and Roy who have elevated
the art to a certain level, which is great. But there are only a handful of people the
public knows and even then they are not huge huge names. In general, if you say you
are a magician, people assume you a children’s entertainer, you do some nerdy stuff,
[pull a rabbit out of hat]… I’m a geek! That is the perception. In the film Serendipity,
John Cusak is in a shop having to buy a suit, and he tries this awful suit which is like
pink, violet, whatever and he is standing in front of the mirror and he’s like, “I look like
a magician”. That’s what people see.
On the other side, there is an attraction to it. It is a fascinating thing; there is an
ambiguity within it. I’m lucky to be in the position where people book me. I get to see
how people view magic and how they perceive it afterwards.
Is there a problem with exposure? Are people like David Blaine helping or hindering?
Definitely helping.
But he gets a lot of criticism
Yes he does which is good. The thing is to have the exposure. They show magic to people. It is important that people see magic; it
should of course be good magic. If it is bad magic it reflects badly on the industry. It is not like music when you say I didn’t like such
and such and artist - you say I saw a magician who was bad, there is no name, no association to a particular magician.
On The Masked Magician, Penn & Teller and the other type of exposure.
Secrets are just tools. What’s important is the way that you present it. Ultimately, people do not remember the exposure. It is a choice.
If you do not want to see it, you can switch off your TV.
Luxembourg
I haven’t figured out the Luxembourgish public yet to be honest. I was born here. I went to school here, and there is still something…
I don’t know how people work. Maybe it is because of the mix of cultures here. It is the only country where, whenever I perform, I have
to work in 2 or 3 different languages in order for everybody to understand me. Perhaps because of that it creates a different dynamic
then anywhere else. For example, in the United States you have one crowd, they all speak English, they all have one mentality. Here
there are 6-7-8 nationalities, and they all react differently. We all have the same emotions but our cultures make us react to different
things differently.
On Luxembourg’s magical future
I reactivated the Magica club in 97 about the same time I created Foire de Magician with a colleague. There was a period when there
were no youngsters to carry the torch. Now it is better because there are more kids involved who are interested in it. I was the first
professional since the 1960s. I am currently the only professional in Luxembourg. I was the first to get major press coverage, my own
TV show; I’ve opened all the right doors.
What can we expect?
I’ve slowed down a bit on the big illusions. It was mainly financial. Luxembourg is a small market; we have to accept that, so I focus
more on smaller shows, more personal tours like they did in the 19th century in private salons where you gather 50-60 people. That’s
something I’ve done for a long time but I still keep an interest in the big illusions and kept developing new material. So, this tour is
going to be a mix of both. You are going to see some stuff from my older programmes, and some new material.

Can’t we all just get along?
Bit of a touchy subject this month, but one I think that, after certain occurrences, is an up to date one: racism in Luxembourg.
While racism in this country can seem relatively non-existent to some, it is still rampant in certain areas of our society. The reason for this is that, like many things in Luxembourg, it is hidden from the majority of the
population. Recently, it has come into the public line of sight. A prominent editor of a national newspaper wrote an article complaining about the Portuguese community displaying their nation’s flag during the World
Cup. To her, this display of expatriate nationalism highlighted the integration problem within the Portuguese community, rather than what it really was, a harmless display of pride for the country in which they were born
or in which their roots lie. Take notice she made no mention of the numerous Irish or British pubs, which display their national colours year round. But this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Luxembourg, like all small countries has a strong sense of national pride. This is mainly to do with constant threats to its sovereignty. Now, a small number of Luxembourgers fear that their mother tongue may become
obsolete due to the influence of foreign language speakers and the fact that the language is so rarely used in most workplaces. But there is a difference between patriotism and nationalism. Luxembourg’s famous slogan
‘Mir welle bleiwen wat mir sin’ (we want to remain, what we are), once a verbal two fingers up to their Nazi occupiers, has since been perverted. Ironically, it is now a favourite slogan for Luxembourgish neo-Nazis. This
naturally infuriates older Luxembourgers who suffered during the war. This was not their intention.
Most young Luxembourg residents have endured at least one encounter with neo-Nazis or racists. Just the other day, on a Luxembourgish band’s MySpace bulletin, band members complained about their show being
ruined by ‘Stupid Nazi fuck-heads’ and this is by no means the only occasion. My younger brother was at the fair this year and stared in disbelief as a man-youth strolled casually by sporting a ‘Hardcore KKK’ trucker
cap. A friend of mine also had his nose broken during an altercation outside a party, with a neo-Nazi.
Thankfully though, these incidents do not occur on a daily basis. But racism and xenophobia do occur daily. These two demons mostly manifest themselves as verbal taunts,
but do not think for one minute that they are therefore no less hurtful to the recipients.
Other examples are bouncers. It is common knowledge to the 18-24 set here in Lux that
some clubs are off limits to people belonging to certain ethnicities, with door policies
depending on the doormen themselves.
Football attracts a special crowd of people. That is the nature of the “beautiful game”.
Incidents at Luxembourg games spring to mind. The first was at a game in Hesperange
between Luxembourg and Cape Verde. During half time, the Football Federation brought
out the U-10 sides from the two countries. When the Cape Verde striker scored, most of
the crowd cheered except for a select group of men who decided to boo the little man.
Another incident happened in the infamous M-Block at the Stade Josy Barthel. The head
of the Red Lion’s fan club was leading the crowd in various songs when he started the
song ‘Stand up if you’re a lion’. Now you have to understand this song is sung with
the best of intentions. It is not meant to be racist at all but, when a fan of Portuguese
descent stood up with the rest of the crowd (of whom about half were actually Luxembourgers) he was singled out by another fan who shouted ‘You’re not Luxembourgish! Sit
down you Portuguese bastard!’ Some mother’s do ‘ave ‘em.
Surely citizens of a country at the heart of the European Union should be smarter than
this. Especially influential media types who should mould the public opinion away from
the old European attitude of distrust towards all things and people foreign.
I’m writing this as a Canadian who has lived in Luxembourg for over 15 years, speaks
four languages and supports Manchester United. I will not accept any excuses about not
accepting another person’s creed, culture, religion, or heritage.

The Champions League got off to a roaring start with all the English teams except Liverpool
winning their first group games. Chelsea ran out fairly comfortable winners against Werder
Bremen 2-1 despite the German team pulling back a late goal. Arsenal also had a similar game
with the same result. The pick of the games however, was the meeting between Manchester
United and Celtic. The feud between the two managers raging on the match was still very much
a personal affair. United started strong and saw a number of chances go begging. Celtic then
snatched the lead through Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink after a mistake by Rio Ferdinand let the in
Dutch striker. The Reds soon equalised after, thanks to Louis Saha’s penalty kick. They then went
ahead again grace au Frenchman Louis, after good work by Paul Scholes. United looked to be
cruising until Shunsuke Nakamura hit home a beautiful free kick from the edge of the penalty area
to ensure the teams went in at half time on level terms. But mere minutes after the second half
had started, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked off a rebound and slotted home what would prove to be
the winning goal.

against tiny Rimini. Before that, the small seaside resort town was only famous for being the
place where my two younger brothers went to football camp and saw street vendors in a territorial
dispute engage in a massive Kung-Fu style fight on the beach.
