ANNUAL REPORT
MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of the Cape Ann Museum, as
defined in its mission statement, is: to foster an
appreciation of the quality and diversity of life
on Cape Ann, past and present; to further the
knowledge and enjoyment of Cape Ann history and
art; to collect and preserve significant information
and artifacts; and to encourage community
involvement with its programs and holdings. In all
its activities, the Museum emphasizes the highest
standards of quality.
A word from the President
It is with great pleasure that we present the 2011 Annual Report. Each year, we ask you to make
an investment in the Museum - which you do in countless ways - through your Membership, by
supporting the Annual Appeal, perhaps by making a gift to the collection, funding a special project
or by volunteering. The following pages represent the return on that investment. We hope that this
report provides new insight into our activities and a better understanding of how your support is
maximized.
We are an evolving institution with a distinguished past and a promising future. We are committed
to sharing the Cape Ann story by growing and caring for the collection, by creating opportunity
and by contributing to our communities. We cannot do this work without you and we cannot
thank you enough.

Visitors
The Museum welcomed almost
20,000 visitors in 2011.
Gillnet fish basket, c. 1910, originally belonging to the Shore
family of East Gloucester. Gift of Janice Lufkin Shea, 2011.
Programs and Education
Program attendance and the
number of programs offered
increased. The Hopper House
Walks, the Margaret Fitzhugh
Browne’s Annisquam Walk, gallery
tours, White-Ellery House art
installations, the Conversations with
Contemporary Artists series and
the popular Music in the Courtyard
program drew crowds.
More than 3,400 children
and families attended the 126
programs designed specifically
for them. We continued to
concentrate on solidifying
partnerships with public schools:
The Young at Art for Head Start
Program is flourishing, with
support from the McCarthy
Family Foundation and New
England Biolabs. The Cape Ann
Art History Curriculum project for
high school students continued
for a second year, receiving
support from the Massachusetts
Cultural Council, the Gloucester
Education Foundation and the
Jebediah Foundation. We plan to
have a curriculum sourcebook
completed by the end of 2012.
And, we have begun working
on a project to improve access
to underserved children and
adults in our communities with
funds received from the Forest
Foundation.
Collaborations
The Museum collaborated
with more than 30 cultural
and community institutions
throughout the year. Collaborative
borders were expanded as
the Museum hosted the U.S.
Department of Commerce’s
Economic Assessment Forum
on Arts and Culture for the
City of Gloucester; two visits
organized by State Rep. AnnMargaret Ferrante and State
Rep. Sarah Peake, Chair of the
Joint Committee on Tourism,
Arts and Cultural Development;
a program on Historic New
England founder William Sumner
Appleton to celebrate their
anniversary; seART’s Partner
with an Artist Forum; a reception
for Montserrat College of Art;

The Alfred Mansfield Brooks Society
Alfred Mansfield Brooks (1870-1963), long time president and curator
of the Cape Ann Museum, was responsible for assembling what would
ultimately become the largest and finest collection of works by marine artist
Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865). Today, the Museum’s Lane Collection
includes over 40 oil paintings and more than 100 pencil drawings. The
fact that such a comprehensive group of works has remained in the artist’s
hometown is remarkable, a testament to Brooks’ vision and foresight.
The Alfred Mansfield Brooks Society was established in
2009tohonorthegenerosityofRobertL.andElizabeth
FrenchandtheirgiftstotheMuseum’scollectionandto
serve as an acknowledgement of gratitude to the long line
ofdonorswhohaveshapedtheMuseum’scollection.The
Society recognizes those who have made donations of art
or artifacts to the Museum, who have pledged a future
gift, or who have provided funds for the purchase of such
ataminimumof$10,000onorafterSeptember2009.

Funding for these programs was made possible
through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural
Council, a state agency, which promotes
excellence, access, education and diversity in
the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences,
in order to improve the quality of life for all
Massachusetts residents and to contribute to
the economic vitality of our communities.

Joseph E. Garland
1922 – 2011
A PersonAl TribuTe
Joe Garland’s lengthy relationship with the Cape Ann Museum was
no different from his long love affair with the city of Gloucester. He was
demanding, generous, fractious, caring, passionate, jealous, protective, intensely
annoying and unshakably honest. Sometimes we “made him sleep on the
couch,” and sometimes he’d stomp out vowing never to return. We always
made up eventually, and as much as he gave us as scholar and historian over
many long years, he received from us in equal measure, freely given by the
longtime institutional guardian of Cape Ann’s precious and perishable past.
We miss him deeply and are as deeply grateful every time we find a mark
of his wisdom and knowledge on a document or photo in our collection.
Rest in peace, good friend. We’ll not forget you.
