PARISH CONNECTIONS
The Benefice of Brimpsfield with Birdlip, Daglingworth, The Duntisbournes,
Edgeworth, Miserden, Syde and Winstone
Dear Friends,
5
0 years ago, on Trinity Sunday 1965, I was made deacon in Lichfield Cathedral.
I left training college, I put on my clerical collar, and I began work as a curate in
a Wolverhampton parish which boasted twenty six pubs: drop-forge casting was
thirsty work! In those days there was a parson in every parish – and there were
ten thousand of them. Some were paid a pittance, some were very rich – it all
depended on the historic endowment of your particular parish. As a curate you got
£500 a year if you were lucky; and there was no clergy pension. Everything was
paid for by the Church Commissioners.
They say that a week is a long time in politics; fifty years is a very long time, even
in the Church of England. The place of traditional Christianity in English culture has
changed out of all recognition; and though there’s no time here to expand that, it’s
clear that this has meant a revolution in our village parishes.
Numbers of clergy. There are now only five thousand paid clergy left, and there
would be half that number if we hadn’t decided to ordain women priests. In 1965
there were five full-time paid clergy in large vicarages in our benefice. Now we
have Val!
Cash. Clergy pay has been sorted; now the clergy are all paid the same stipend not generous, but on a par with a junior teacher. They have a free ‘sensible modern’
house, and they have a pension. But that costs, and the Church Commissioners
can’t any longer even fund the full pension. The cost to you and me in the pew
of this package is at least 100 times what it was in 1965, and for various reasons
which I would need a book to explain, there are 70% less of us regularly in the
pews to pay that bill.
Face the facts - the old structures have collapsed. But that needn’t be the end.
If you go back to our roots in the New Testament Church you won’t anywhere find
mention of vicars. What you do find is a passionate belief that all of us christians
are ordained to ministry at our baptism. We are all vicars. The church then was a
'do-it-yourself' church – and so can we be.
Indeed where that happens, as in our UK black churches, you find vibrant life
and numerical growth. You can see it happening here and there in our benefice –
seriously encouraged by Val. But it does involve cultural change – and that is always
difficult. We need help and training so that we can get a new pair of spectacles .
3
And in my experience we couldn’t do better than to consider the Local Ministry
option. Visit a LM parish like South Cerney or the Greenway parishes: or ask
Pauline our diocesan LM consultant to talk to us about it. Fifty years on I have
come to believe that the Holy Spirit is calling us to stop being a clerical club and to
become ‘the Church of Christ’.

The Revd Ian Bussell, Director of Ordinands
O
rdination sounds like ‘ordered’ and ‘orderly’. It doesn’t really reflect the
messiness of our lives, or the riskiness of God. You might wonder at its
relevance, or its usefulness. At the ordinations in June in the Cathedral you will
have seen the Church of England at its most gloriously polished, rehearsed, tidied
and ordered. As the clergy and Readers process in and out you’d think they do
this every day. And there was a new group of clergy being ordained, who have
completed their modules in how to walk in twos and wear robes, and who will
soon be taking up their very important roles of walking in twos and wearing robes
around our towns and country lanes of Gloucestershire. Or maybe not!
The truth is that they leave the cathedral and get stuck in, up to their armpits,
in the messiness of life. From feuding families, to grieving parents, from despairing
loss of faith to its joyful discovery. They are creating the places where you and
I can do what we need to do: touch the eternal, risk loving, express shame, be
reconciled, discover community, rage at injustice, let go, and in it all find that
Christ walks with us. These are not saints (believe me, I know), in fact we all have
our stories to tell, but they are people who are able to believe that God might use
them despite their weaknesses, and often because of them.
The orders into which we are ordained free us to serve in a disordered world,
not to tidy it up, but to proclaim that the Lord is here, his spirit is with us, not
despite the mess, but right in it with us. And before you say ‘not me, Lord’, just
remember, most of us who are ordained have said that at one time or another. If
you feel God might be calling you to serve in this way, do give me a ring on 01452
835545.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION 2015 – 2016
ollowing the Hysterical, Historical event on Saturday 9th May where we gathered
together, amongst other memorabilia, some old pictures of Brimpsfield and the
surrounding area; we feel sure there is much more material out there and we
are endeavouring to trace as much as possible. Looking to the future however
we would like to ensure that the Village history is not lost and to that end we are
throwing down a gauntlet with a prize or prizes attached to encourage members
of the Village and others to take contemporary pictures in and around the Village
and surrounding area over the coming months so that we can amass a pictorial
history. We will then hope to maintain this project in the years to come so that
future Villagers will be able to trace the history of the Community more readily.
In order to “kick this off” we would like all photographs submitted to us by
Friday the 9th October. This date has been chosen so that we can, (with the
photographers’ agreement), not only award prize(s), but also have them included
in an annual pictorial Calendar of the Village.
If you are interested and willing to help out on this project then please register
your interest.

F
or the past four or five years the service on the first Sunday of the month has
been expressly for children. Many of them are now growing up and taking part
in sport and other activities on a Sunday morning. It has been suggested therefore
that the service should now be widened to include anyone who would like to come
and join us at a very informal service where children of all ages will still take an
active part and are extremely welcome. It will last no longer than 40 minutes with
refreshments afterwards to allow time for us all to chat and get to know each other
better. Everyone is very welcome.

A
t our May meeting it was announced that Art Classes would
resume at the end of September, and the Craft afternoons would
also start again then. Our Skittles team had been victorious against
Shipton Oliffe and we are through to the next round. A discussion
was held on the Resolution to be debated at the National AGM and
members voted in favour of the Resolution. We were reminded that we would be
serving teas at Cotswold Farm on the two days that the garden would be open for
the NGS at the end of May.
Our speaker, Brian Tidmarsh, gave a fascinating account of his life and work as a
farrier. His father was the first Tidmarsh in the forge at Crudwell. Brian became
involved when his father began to travel widely and took him around in an old
Austin Seven. After the War tractors were used more widely and horses became
redundant,so it became important to look for work elsewhere. Brian left school
at Christmas in 1961 and started in the forge in January 1962, and did a nine
year apprenticeship. The winter of 1962/3 was bitter. After Boxing Day 1962 no
more horses were shod until the following March because of the snow. There
were more difficulties in1964 when Foot and Mouth disease stopped hunting.
However, they picked up work at Bowood and elsewhere in that area, and Brian
decided to go in for competition shoeing. He took over running the business in
the 1970's, and began shoeing Princess Anne's horses. This was an introduction to
many other clients, including the Duke of Beaufort at Badminton. It was a hard life
but enjoyable. Work started at 4 o'clock in the morning and went on till midnight.
It was evident how much Brian enjoyed his way of life and how keen he was that
his skills should be passed on to a new generation. In his time he had trained 18
Apprentices from start to finish. Kate Beim expressed our appreciation to him in
the vote of thanks.
We look forward to our Summer Barbecue in July, which will be hosted by Iona
Birchall at Cotswold Farm.

OPEN GARDEN - THANK YOU!
A
very sincere Thank You to all who supported the Open Garden event at
Daglingworth House on Tuesday, 2nd June. Fortunately, the storms of the
morning moved away and the evening was sunny and warm, if a little breezy!
Rendcomb Patients' Support Group are delighted that between 60 and 70 people
came to enjoy this beautiful garden and chat over a cup of tea and cake. Thanks
to those who made the delicious cakes.
The evening raised £203 which will go towards the purchase of a 'hyphrecator',
(a piece of equipment used in minor ops.) for the benefit of all Rendcomb Surgery
patients. Sincere thanks to David and Etta Howard for their very kind hospitality.

Celebrity Electric Bicycle Polo
F
RIDAY 5th JUNE at LONGDOLE POLO CLUB
To raise money for The Watershed RDA Group in Coates, Cirencester
The event kicked off with an Arena Polo Demonstration by the immaculately
turned out children of The Pony Club on their beautiful ponies.
This was followed by a Polocrosse master class given by the 2015 UK World Cup
team – on their way to the World Championships in South Africa in July.
….After this things began to deteriorate!!!!
Thirteen brave celebrities battled it out on A2B electric bikes whilst Jacob Kirby of
eCycles in Stroud tried in vain to control/ umpire the worsening situation.
The Gloucester Old Spots – made up of ex- Gloucester rugby players (Terry Fanolua,
James Simpson Daniel, Rob Fidler and Tom Beim) committed many fouls – most of
them unknown to the bicycle polo world before this event!
The Super Heroes United Team (Mark Tomlinson, Kelvin Johnson, Jamie Bond,
and Jamie McDonald) were on several occasions a Disunited Team having parted
company with their bikes!
The Pendleton Peddlers- the Girls who shared two chukkas – Laura Tomlinson,
Nina Clarkin, Lucie Archer, Debbie Harris and Tabba Woodd – were focussed, lethal
in the ride offs and totally accurate in front of goal. This “scary” combo beat all
opposition to win the tournament.
Many thanks to everyone involved – over £2000 was raised for the Charity.

Alexander Technique Teacher MSTAT
Learning to use the Alexander Technique can improve your breathing,
clarity of thought, and your ability to handle life’s stresses, so that you can
be more relaxed, confident and maintain your health.
You gain an understanding of the body's fundamental design, and a way
to move that can help you feel better, on your own. You become more
attuned to your body's warning signs of tension and compression, giving
you a chance to change your habits that cause unnecessary tightness. An
improvement in poise and general vitality is a bonus! For all ages and
outlooks.

Part Time HR Admin Assistant
Corinium HR Management; a Brimpsfield based HR Consultancy is small but growing.
Our consultants provide training and recruitment services to organisations across the UK.
Projects at the moment are like buses – quiet initially but then can arrive together making
the administration aspect of what we do varied, exciting but also a little irregular. As we
grow it is anticipated that the administration aspect of the company will even out.
We are therefore looking for a flexible individual, ideally but not necessarily with HR or
office management experience, who is initially looking for a few hours per week with the
potential to expand to 12 hours in the medium term. If you can bring great Microsoft office
skills we can provide development around the HR aspects of our business. We hope that
as we grow, you will too.
Rate: £9.00 per hour. For more information, please call Clare on 07917 225689 or
emai:l [email protected].
Do you have a mole problem?
With over 30 years experience in traditional mole control I can effectively, discreetly and humanely
remove the culprits! No gas, chemicals or poisons used and completely safe to children and pets.
