reetings fellow
AGD members…
As another year
comes to a close, and a
new one begins, it's time
to reflect back on what
we've done, what we've
learned, and what we've
accomplished, so we can set
goals on where we want to
be and what we want to be
doing a year from now.
N
This past calendar year has
been a busy one for the
Nebraska AGD. We've joined
the 21st century with a new
and upgraded website, as
well as becoming a part
of the social networking
scene found on Facebook,
Twitter (@NebraskaAGD)
and LinkedIn. These
accomplishments are a direct
result of our dedicated and
hard working executive
director, Julie Berger-Moore.
Look for more updates
to the website and an
detailed explanation of our
happenings on Facebook,
Twitter and LinkedIn in 2014.
Our fun and hard work
didn't end there though.
We also continued the next
phase of our Mastertack
program, enhancing our
skills and education on the
subjects of implants and
implant surgery, as well
as practice management,
and treating the medically
compromised patient. Our
upcoming courses for 2014
begin with bang this June
as we recruited the highly
respected and nationally
acclaimed Dr. Joseph
Massad, to pass on his vast
knowledge in restoring
the edentulous arch. Sign
up now while space is still
available... It's going fast.
We also weighed in with
the Nebraska Dental
Association this past
September on the scope of
practice, sharing our state
and national viewpoints in
helping to craft a new and
improved expansion of
duties for dental assistants
and hygienists. Hopefully
in 2014 we will see this
expansion reach a new level
of implementation here in
NebraskaAcademyofGeneralDentistry
January2014|
Nebraska. Legislatively, we
also offered our support at
a hearing of the Board of
Dentistry on administration
of Botox by general dentists.
We would like to extend
a special thanks to Drs.
Karry Whitten and Mike
Sesemann, both of Omaha
for their presentation to the
board in helping reverse a
previous decision regarding
Botox. Know that in 2014,
our organization will wade
into any waters necessary to
defend the scope of practice
of the General Dentist here
in Nebraska.
Finally, this past year, we
saw our first class of Masters
graduate in Nashville and
earn their prestigious
designation. While our next
class won't be receiving their
Masters in 2014, our next
calendar year will move us
one step closer to joining
this prestigious club.
So, as we venture into 2014,
here's wishing you all the
best, planning on you continuing the life long process
of learning through high
quality CE, and hoping 2014
encounters a few less controversial legislative issues that
we need to weigh in on, with
regard to general dentistry.
Sincerely,
Travis J. Antholz, DDS

H
appy New Year!
I hope all of you
had a wonderful
holiday season. It's crazy
to think how time flies
this time of year. Now
that we are starting the
new year let’s look back
on last year. NAGD had a
great annual meeting in
June in Lincoln with Dr.
Ash Kaushesh on implants.
Dr. Kaushesh lectured
on and demonstrated
implant placement, soft
tissue management, and
I.V. placement. NAGD
had an awesome fall
mastertrack meeting in
Omaha featuring Shelly
Ryan, RDA who spoke on
practice management. Also,
Drs. Tim Durham and Alan
Hergenrader who spoke on
special needs and special
patient care. We are truly
lucky to be involved in such
a great organization that
allows us to have top of the
line CE in our state.
board is excited to have
him become involved. He
graduated dental school
from UNMC, and currently
practices in Bennington,
NE. We will be trading off
editor’s messages in the
future.
Here’s to a successful new
year in the Nebraska AGD!
We recently had a board
member, Dr. Brian Penly,
join the newsletter staff as
co-editor with myself. The

X-Rays During Pregnancy –
What are the Recommendations?
BrianPenly,DDS
O
n July 26th 2013,
the American
Congress
of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists (ACOG) released
a statement entitled “"Dental
X-Rays, Teeth Cleanings = Safe
During Pregnancy” indicating
that dental radiographs
were safe during pregnancy
(amongst other services). The
story was picked up in the
mainstream dental press and
delivered to our inboxes and
we were encouraged to read
more about the position of
ACOG.
N
The announcement of ACOG
is linked to a committee
opinion published in the
August 2013 issue of the
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Journal. In the actual
opinion, the only mention of
x-rays or radiography is as
follows: “Patients often need
reassurance that prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment of oral
conditions, including dental
X-rays (with shielding of the
abdomen and thyroid) and local
anesthesia (lidocaine with or
without epinephrine), are safe
during pregnancy.”
This a great opinion and I am
glad to hear that the OB/GYN
community is on board with
encouraging pregnant patients
to obtain dental treatment.
For some reason this story got
the dental field talking about
treating pregnant patients as
though something new and
groundbreaking has been
delivered. In actuality, the
opinion really has done nothing
to change the way that dentists
deliver safe oral health care to
a pregnant patient.
In dental school, we are
generally taught that the
pregnant patient is somebody
not to be trifled with
needlessly. At UNMC, the
official school position is to
only expose for emergency
purposes during a known
pregnancy and delay other
radiographs until the pregnancy
has ceased. Upon getting out
into practice, we continue to
respect the pregnant patient,
occasionally contacting an OB/
GYN to get permission for
medication or clearance to
engage in dental surgery.
Following the rabbit hole, one
can quickly find that no real
solid recommendations exist
for when to expose a pregnant
patient to radiographs, only
how to achieve a safe exposure.
According to NCRP 145
(Radiation Protection in
Dentistry) it is stated:
NebraskaAcademyofGeneralDentistry
January2014|
“if x-ray exposure is required
for adequate diagnosis and
treatment for a pregnant
person, then the radiologic
procedure should be
conducted so as to minimize
the radiation dose to the pelvic
region. If dental treatment is to
be delayed until after delivery,
then exposure should also be
delayed.”
Looking to the American
Academy of Oral and
Maxillofacial Radiologists for
guidance, it is can be noted
that this organization does
not have a written position on
radiographic exposure for the
pregnant patient.
Digging further into the
published FDA guidelines for
“The Selection of Patients
for Dental Radiographic
Examinations”, there is no
specific guidance for pregnant
patients.
So despite all the great
interest in this story, there
is realistically no change in
how we should approach
radiographic examinations for
the pregnant patient. In my
opinion, the statement was
more for OB/GYN doctors
than for dentists, but perhaps
dentists should view the
statement as a gentle nudging
that we don’t always need to
“consult” to gain permission
for basic dental services that
are within our expertise. As
a continuation, I found an
interesting blog posting from
an OB/GYN entitled “An Open
Letter to the Dentists of the
World” (http://academicobgyn.
com/2011/03/03/an-openletter-to-the-dentists-of-theworld/) which is an entertaining
read for anybody who has ever
leaned on an OB with respect
to a mutual patient.
One of the best documents
I have found on treating
pregnant patients comes
from the California Dental
Association. In February 2010,
the CDA released a set of
guidelines entitled: “Oral
Health During Pregnancy and
Childhood”. In addition to
being a very nice compilation
of current recommendations
for many topics, it basically
suggests one simple premise
with regards to x-rays:
“Recommendations about
radiographs developed by
an expert panel from the
dental profession under the
auspices of the Radiographic
imaging of oral tissues is not
contraindicated in Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) do
not need to be altered because
of pregnancy. The number and
type of radiographs will depend
upon the clinical conditions and
the patient’s health history.”
Simply put, when it comes to
radiographs, treat the pregnant
patient like a patient and take
the film if it needs to be taken.

Regional

House Votes to
Rescind Obamacare
O
h sure, we’d all
read an article
with a title like
that. However, if I would
have typed “From the Desk
of the Regional Director,”
most readers would have
yawned and moved on to
the advertisements.
Last June, I was elected
Regional Director for the
Region X of the AGD
during the Annual Session
in Nashville, TN. No one
was as surprised as I was
since both the nomination
as well as the caucus vote
took place while I was in the
bathroom. Nonetheless, I
am pleased to be involved
with our organization at the
national level.
The duties of the Regional
Director are currently in the
process of being defined.
At this time, no policy
manual exists to address
the function of the RD.
However, the National AGD
Leadership Conference
has traditionally been a
project undertaken by the
RD Committee. In addition,
the RD assists with tasks
associated with the regional
caucuses.
I look forward to working
with our Region X Trustee,
Dr. Mark Malterud as well
as our Regional Executive
Director, Mrs. Julie
Berger-Moore. I would
like to focus on increasing
membership and improving
communications between
the five states in our region,
and between Region X and
the AGD headquarters in
Chicago.
Stay warm this winter, and
please do not hesitate to
contact me if I can provide
you with any assistance or
information.
Sincerely,
Kevin Low, DDS
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month
February, as many of you know is National Children’s
Dental Health month. The Oral Fact sheets located
on the AGD website, (http://www.agd.org) have
many resources to help educate your patients not
only on children’s oral health but topics from
A to Z.
Many questions or subjects that come up in
conversation during the appointment are
covered with a fact sheet. They are easy
to find, print, and understand for your
patient. They even come personalized
which is in a way free marketing. I
encourage you to utilize these to help
promote good oral and overall health.

Website Allows Members to
Submit Continuing Education
N
ow it’s easier than ever for Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) members to submit their continuing
education (CE) credits.
With the AGD’s new online CE Submission Form, members can submit CE records* from non-PACEapproved providers and check the status of past submissions via the AGD website—without calling, emailing, or
faxing. Plus, the form allows for faster CE processing; submissions should appear on members’ transcripts within five
business days.
The online CE Submission Form is easy to use. Just follow these four steps:
1. Visit www.agd.org/submitCE.

Nebraska AGD Mastertrack
Begin Your Journey
at Anytime!
H
ow many times have
you caught yourself
saying “I really want
to start working towards my
Mastership” but don’t know
where or when to start?
Or “I know the NAGD is
starting a new Mastertrack
class, but I wish I could start
in 6 months because I can’t
attend the first weekend. I
wonder if I can do that?”
I receive questions like these
regularly and often times
it involves “if the class has
already started, do I have to
wait?”
N
I am happy to answer
that last question with a
resounding “NO! You can
begin YOUR Mastership
journey at any time!”
This topic has been
discussed for the past year
and your NAGD Board of
Directors has decided to
offer an “open enrollment”,
which means you can join
our Mastertrack at any
time!!! The Mastertrack will
still include all the disciplines
and hours needed to obtain

your Mastership, you’ll just
be on a different cycle.
The disciplines will be a
continual cycle, meaning
you won’t miss any of the
needed disciplines if you
start later.
Each course is still 4 days
in length from Thursday
to Sunday. Each course
involved an in-office
assignment that is to be
completed during the
following six month period
and presented on the first
day, Thursday, of the next
session. Attendance and
presenting at every session
will ensure you have the
required number of hours
needed to obtain your
Mastership. This program
contains all the requirements
to achieve Mastership status
barring you have obtained
enough hours to obtain
your Fellowship. Don’t have
your Fellowship or have
not taken the exam? No
need to worry! Several of
our doctors who recently
obtained their Mastership
had only 200 hours towards
their Fellowship when they
began our Mastertrack
class. You can attend classes
outside of our Mastertrack
and still achieve this goal!!!
AND if you’ve already
started your Mastertrack
journey and only need a
few disciplines, you are
still welcome to attend a
weekend at a time!
If you’d like more
information or just have
questions, please give me
a call and we can discuss it.
The NAGD is working very
hard to bring high caliber,
quality speakers right here
to Nebraska. Don’t miss
out on an opportunity to
hear Dr. Joe Massad in June
at our Annual Meeting. I
hope to see you then! The
NAGD Mastertrack is truly
one member benefit that
all NAGD members should
take advantage!
