Amnesty??? Do you have an old paddling pool (for sand only) , beach umbrella or wind break that you don’t need any more? They would be very useful for
helping to create our seaside theme. Or any books or DVDs going begging –
Please give Maria Sargisson a ring on 341990 and we can arrange to collect.
Village groups: why don’t you have a stall over the weekend? It could be your
chance to do some fundraising for your own group. No stalls charges for village
organisations. Please contact Andy 07540 461514 for a form (must be completed
for planning purposes).
This event is for you: for all our Residents of Weedon. We hope there will be
something for everyone – so save the date and come along and enjoy the event.
Why not get the family or friends together and make a weekend of it ??
Lorry Crashes into Canal Bridge, The Story Continues.............
The photo above is another view of the damage done to the canal bridge shown in
April’s edition of Weedon News. After publication, Chris Salaman added that it was
caused by the lorry’s brakes failing and the driver using the bridge to stop the vehicle!
It was carrying reels of steel hawsers from Wrights Rope Works, Birmingham which
normally would have been carried on the canal if the boatmen had not been on strike.
When the lorry driver asked the boatmen for help in retrieving the reels that fell on the
towpath they declined using very colourful language!
The house, just to the left of the bridge, now a private dwelling, was formerly the
Black Horse public house The building in the distance was known as Robert’s Folly,
built as a hotel to serve the railway, but never successful. It was demolished and replaced by the Village Antique Centre. On the right of the bridge, now also a private
dwelling is the former Stationmaster’s house.

LIFESAVER FOR WEEDON BEC
In line with many of the surrounding villages Weedon now has its own public access
defibrillator. Due to the initiative of the Trustees of the Village Hall their successful
application to the British Heart Foundation has resulted in Weedon village receiving
a free issue AED unit and external storage cabinet.
This is a piece of life saving equipment available to the public and capable of
providing a reviving shock to those who have suffered a heart failure. Used in
conjunction with CPR these intelligent machines have been responsible for saving
many lives. The unit is available 24/7 and can be found on the front of the village
hall adjacent to the main entrance. Look for the yellow box! The unit is very simple
to use as it provides step by step verbal instruction when it is activated. Access to
the cabinet is given by the ambulance service when prompted by a 999 call.
There will be some free AED and CPR training sessions planned for later this year
and the Trustees will be seeking to get the school and pupils engaged in training as
well. It is anticipated that a further AED unit will be placed at the Jubilee Field in the
very near future thanks to the initiative of the Weedon Football Club. Watch this
space for more information or email Tony at [email protected]

Archaeology in YOUR Community
CLASP is proud to announce its first full Archaeology Day at the Icon Centre, Eastern Way, Daventry on the 23rd July 2017 from 9am to 5pm. The theme of the event
will be a programme of presentations by the commercial archaeologists who, in recent years, have excavated a series of archaeological sites at large scale developments in the Daventry area.
The excavations include sites along the route of the new Link Road between
Daventry and Junction 16 of the M1; at Monksmoor and Apex Park, Daventry; on
Barby Hill and all three phases of the Daventry International Rail-freight Terminal.
The excavations have uncovered vitally important and exciting finds that previously
were either relatively or totally unknown. These finds stretch from Neolithic long
barrows of national significance near Flore, through Bronze Age activity at various
sites to locations displaying activity through all phases of the Iron Age and into the
early years of the Romano-British era. The extensive Iron Age settlements located
at DIRFT are indicating another site of national importance, one of the largest Iron
Age Villages in the British Isles. The proposed Rugby 'SUE' extension also has
archaeological discoveries that will be discussed.
CLASP has only been able to present this day with total support, both in the form of
the speakers, exhibitions of finds and financial support from developers, consultants and archaeological contractors - thank you all. This co-operation between
commercial and community archaeologists helps provide a mutual understanding of
each others work, perhaps giving indications of where further research should lead.
CLASP is always looking for new members – you can join us either by visiting our
website or at the event, previous experience not necessary!
This day is a real opportunity for the local population to discover some of the
earliest origins of Northamptonshire society. The day is free but we do require
everybody attending to book a place please visit the CLASP website:
www.claspweb.org.uk the booking link is on the front page!
We, commercial and community archaeologists, look forward to meeting you at the
Icon!

Weedon Bec Pocket Park
The cold April and hot May have really confused the plants in the Pocket Park.
Some of the summer plants (Pink Campion, Bugle, White Dead Nettle) are already
flowering while some spring flowers (Speedwell, Garlic Mustard) have only just got
going and some trees are not yet in full leaf.
There is an old country saying: "Ash before Oak, in for a soak:
Oak before Ash, only a splash!"
This refers to which tree comes into leaf first and, like most country sayings, is
based on observation over a long time. Oak and Ash are usually the last trees to
come into leaf and so are more noticeable. The scientific explanation is that Ash is
prompted into leaf by the length of daylight, while Oak comes into leaf dependent on
the temperature. If the Oak is delayed by cold temperatures, it is likely that the
whole year will be cold and rainy. Did you notice which came into leaf first this year?
At the moment, the Hawthorn trees are in bloom. Hawthorn's other name is "May"
as this is the month it normally flowers. In recent years it has flowered in April; this
year it started to flower in May and has continued into June!
If you have been to the park recently, you will have noticed that an area has been
rotovated. This is so that we can clear the nettles more easily and sow a wild flower
mix to introduce more species diversity. If you are interested in joining us to help
with this work, you will be very welcome. Please contact either Ray Charlett (01327
340108), Fred Kay (01327 349428) or Pamela Biss (01327 349309) for more information.

A message from the Parish Council Chairman
So, here it is, my first message to you as your new Chairman. Before I
go any further I would like to acknowledge and thank Sue Butler who
has done a sterling role over the last year. Sue’s commitment to the
Council is outstanding and her knowledge of all things council and the
village is enviable. I hope that I am able to step up to the role and add
value over the next 12 months.
I’ve been living in the village with my family for about 12 years now. My daughter,
who was actually born in the village, is completing her last year at Weedon Bec
Primary School.
Following the election period that Sue talked about in the last Weedon News, I can
advise that 12 people put themselves forward to make up the new council. This was
within the required 13 places to create a Parish Council and, as a consequence, no
formal voting was required. The new team consists of a good and healthy mix of
existing, returning and new councillors. There remains a final position to be filled. If
you are interested and want to learn more, please contact the Parish Clerk, or maybe come along to our monthly Parish Council Meeting which usually takes place
from 7.30 on the first Tuesday. Don’t forget, provision is always made for members
of the village to ask questions or raise concerns; once again I would encourage you
to speak with our friendly Parish Clerk for further advice and guidance.
The Annual Parish Meeting took place in April and was well attended by members of
our village. As well as updates from groups across the village and district, there
were also two presentations. The first was from the company that has been contracted to deal with the contamination problem on the Mound in Jubilee Field. We
received reassurance about the due care that will be taken with removing the
mound and allowing Weedon Bec to make full use of Jubilee Field again. Work will
commence soon. The second presentation was from Mr Chittenden, the owner of
the Depot estate. He shared with us his vision for the Depot which he has now
made his main place of work.
I thought I would end with providing you with a bit more detail about my new role.
The Chairman is responsible for managing the Parish Council Meetings with the
support of the Parish Clerk, ensuring that all councillors are heard and able to
equally contribute to the decision-making process. The Chair is not able to make
decisions on behalf of the Council but can make a second casting vote in the case
of a tie. All decisions must be made by the Council as a whole. I’m looking forward
to the challenge! I hope you are all enjoying the return to Spring as I am.
And, until next time, take care.

Chris Salaman: Liverymen
This talk by Chris, a Red Badge Guide for the City of London, had to be postponed
from last year. It is about the origin of Liverymen, their purpose and achievements,
the role they play in today’s City and the resulting effect they have had over the last
500 years.
31 October
Kevin Varty: Dead and Buried
Two return visits this year from Kevin, a very entertaining speaker! The first on
Halloween night is about the gruesome story of one of man’s oldest fears, premature
burial and bodysnatching. This talk follows 2014’s Black Feathers to Black
Underwear.
28 November
Kevin Varty: Pictures in the Parlour
Kevin’s second talk is a history of magic lanterns, invented in the 1650s, some two
hundred years before photography. The talk covers developments in the lanterns
from their heyday in the 1870s and ends with a re-creation of a magic lantern show
giving an insight into family entertainment in the Victorian era. All the lanterns, glass
slides, jokes (and groans) are original items.

BIRD NOTES
WEEDON
With the unseasonable weather and the fact that I have not been too observant around
Weedon so far this spring, I have not seen or heard much in the way of summer
visitors locally apart from a few singing Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps and a couple of
passing Swallows. In the County as a whole however, most of the expected visitors
have arrived, some quite early, others a little late. In the Village, the only Little Egrets I
have seen lately were single birds on 18th Mar and 4th April, although no doubt they
are still around. Two Siskins visited my feeders on 21st March and even sang as if in
territory from adjacent trees. The only other notable garden feeder visitor that has
visited recently was a Great Spotted Woodpecker during March, quite unusual in my
garden, although not in others apparently.
NEARBY
Little and Tawny Owls were reported from near Little Brington and Hen Wood
respectively, Four Ravens were soaring over Waydale Hill (Brington) along with many
Buzzards on 24th March and a staggering 100,000 Starlings were estimated in a roost
murmuration around a Daventry industrial estate during March. April produced a
Wheatear near Little Brington on 4th and one at Long Buckby on 30th, 2 Ravens at
Fawsley on 16th Apr, single Redstarts at Fawsley on 16th and 30th and a Whinchat at
Long Buckby also on 30th.
BOROUGH HILL
Not much activity in March, but the usual few pairs of Meadow Pipits were singing and
displaying on 23rd. drowned out by the numerous Skylarks doing the same. April
produced a Peregrine on 3rd, a late Redwing on 10th, Wheatears on several dates
with an influx of 12+ on 30th and 2 Ring Ouzels, also on 30th.
DAVENTRY COUNTRY PARK
In the last few days of March , among several occurrences of interest were Common
Scoters, a Little Gull, Kumlien's Gull, Osprey and Siberian Chiffchaff. In April, a
Slavonian Grebe on 2nd, Garganey on 12th, Redstart from 24th to 26th and Whimbrel
on 26th.
COUNTY RARITIES
There was an Iceland Gull at Stanwick gravel pits on 16th Mar with a Kittiwake on 31st,
10 Brent Geese at Pitsford Reservoir on 18th and 11 Common Scoters on the following day. In April, a Black-necked Grebe at Pitsford Reservoir on 3rd, a Siberian
Chiffchaff at Long Buckby on 9th, 3 records of Goshawk at Pitsford Reseervoir
between 9th and 18th, A Black Redstart at Byfield on 14th, a Wood Warbler at Pitsford
Reservoir on 15th, 3 Cranes over Earls Barton gravel pits on 17th, A Kittiwake at
Stanwick gravel pits on 18th, a Hen Harrier at Lyveden New Bield on 23rd and a White
Stork over Northampton on 23rd.

Hello. My name is Chris Griffiths. I grew up in
Weedon during the 1960s and 1970s. The village
and it's people made such an impact on my life
that I wrote a book about it. The book is called
"How Grim Was My Valley". It is a thoughtful,
upsetting and laugh out loud account of one boy’s
story whilst growing up. They are reviewers words
and not mine. I just wrote the story as I
remembered it. The follow up book to that is
"The Furry Angel". This is a story about that same man many years later. The Furry
Angel is a heart rending tale about redemption, sadness, hope and most of all love.
After a very tough time the author had given up on life. But a golden labrador called
Pippin became his companion. She became his best friend, his counsellor, his
nurse and at times his only hope. The Furry Angel will have you laughing as well as
brushing away some tears. My most recent book is called "The Healing of The
Wasichu". That same man going on an unforgettable journey across the state of
Arizona. If you wish to see a world through odd shaped spectacles then please join
me on my travels. The wonderful village of Weedon is written about and referred to
many times within these books. They are all available from some of the larger
bookshops worldwide, some libraries and from Amazon.co.uk and Kindle. I hope
you enjoy sharing my life.
Stephen is the newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner for
Northamptonshire. He is happily married to Nikki, they have a young
family and are seeing first-hand how wonderful & challenging bringing
up children in the modern world can be. Stephen had a normal upbringing; climbing trees, playing football and then joining the Air Training
Corps. This taught him tolerance, how to work with others through team
-work, the importance of taking responsibility and the value of public
service.
Over the last 30 years, Stephen worked his way up through the ranks, from his first
job unloading lorries through various senior roles onto running his own business.
Stephen is passionate about making sure everyone gets their opportunity to make
the most of their lives. As the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northamptonshire, Stephen wants to ensure victims are put at the heart of everything he does.
He is focused on addressing the problem with alcohol and drug fuelled crime
across Northamptonshire, as well as working to end domestic violence. In addition
to this, he also wants to make sure that the towns and villages of Northamptonshire
are safe for children and free from those who wish to harm them, either physically
or online.
Stephen is committed to protecting the number of frontline officers and believes
that there is an ever increasing opportunity to exploit new technologies and to
enable more officers to be visible on the streets of Northamptonshire tackling the
issues important to local residents rather than being stuck at stations filling out
paperwork.

the GP team. Laura had been working at Springfield Surgery in Brackley and joins
us with an excellent reputation. We have also added Nurse Practitioner Alison

Girlguiding is growing in Weedon!
We are delighted to report that the new Rainbow Unit is up
and running with twelve girls and two leaders. The first
few weeks have flown by and the unit is settling down after
the initial excitement.
The Chapter House is available for hire. If you need a small hall for your group or for
a private party or event, rentals are very competitive and Wifi is also available.
Please contact Sheila Troath 01327 341642 for more information and availability.
Our first unit outing will be to Daventry Country Park. We
will also be joining a county Rainbow Day trip to Cotswold
Wildlife Park.
Our recent concert by the Hunsbury Harmonettes raised a total
of £216, to be added to our roof fund. We have a long way to go,
but every little helps. It was a very enjoyable concert, lovely
voices and a good mix of songs. Thoroughly enjoyed by all those
who attended.
Our Brownie Unit is also going well and we currently have 20 girls. The Brownies
have been working on a “Free Being Me” programme and spreading the word via
school assembly, song, t-shirt design and one group is in the process of making its
own video. We have also been busy with a challenge badge to celebrate the Senior
Section (formerly Rangers) 100th Birthday.
We have been really lucky to find a great Brownie Helper, Olivia, who is a member of
Newnham Guides. We now need to recruit a Rainbow Helper, and would
particularly love to welcome back one of our ex Brownies to help in our Rainbow
unit. Helping in a Brownie or Rainbow Unit is a great opportunity for any girls involved in Guiding, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme or any volunteering
scheme.
If you know of any girls who might be interested in Rainbows, Brownies or volunteering we would love to hear from you.

Advance Notice: Weedon Village Show 3rd September 2016
The Village Show will be taking place on 3rd September in the
village hall. Our Village Show is a great event that we can all be
very proud of! We are looking forward to seeing a wonderful display of the creativity and skill from the village again this year.
The show is an excellent opportunity for everyone to show off their
hidden talents, with adults and children’s classes including flowers, fruit and
vegetables, culinary skills, arts, crafts and photography.
As in previous years all children’s classes will be free to enter, and all children who
enter get a prize of some sort. We hope the classes will give all the children something to think about and some ‘makes’ to keep them busy over the summer
holidays. This year we have worked with the Brownie and Scout group leaders so that
the children’s classes will help towards badges. We have also changed one of the
culinary classes into a ‘Technical Baking’ class, for all the Bake Off fans in the village
– take a good look at the schedule and give it a go!
The show schedules are included with this newsletter, which gives you all plenty of
time to look at the schedule and think about what you could enter – remember no
previous experience is necessary and it is great fun to join in!
Prize giving is at 4 pm. This year, newly elected District Councillor Adam Brown will
be on hand to help us out.
If you can provide any help on the day, or can donate any prizes for the raffle or the
tombola, please contact the Village Hall Management Committee or Judith Duck on
01327 349613 (or via email on [email protected]).
