Climate and Geography: Jordan has a combination of
Mediterranean and arid desert climates, with Mediterranean
climates prevailing in the north and west of the country, while
the majority of the country is desert. Generally, the country
has warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with annual
average temperatures ranging from 12 to 25 C (54 to 77 F)
and summertime highs reaching the 40s (105-115 F) in the
desert regions. Rainfall averages vary from 50mm (1.97
inches) annually in the desert to as much as 800 mm (31.5
inches) in the northern hills, some of which falls as snow.
The Government: The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a
constitutional monarchy with representative government.
The reigning monarch, His Majesty King Abdullah II, is the
Head of State, the Chief Executive and the Commander-inChief of the Armed forces. The king exercises his executive
authority through the Prime Minister and the Council of
Ministers, or Cabinet. The cabinet is responsible before the
elected House of Deputies which, along with the House
of Notables (Senate), constitutes the legislative branch
of the government. The judicial branch is an independent
branch of the government. Since 1989, all elements of the
Jordanian political spectrum have embarked together on
a road to greater democracy, liberalization and consensus
building. These reforms, which were guided by the late King
Hussein, have placed Jordan on an irreversible road to
democratization. The result has been greater empowerment
FACTS
and involvement of everyday citizens in Jordan's civic life,
contributing to increased stability and institutionalization
The Economy: Since His Majesty King Abdullah II assumed
the throne in 1999, Jordan has embarked on some broad
economic reforms in a long-term effort to improve living
standards. The Jordanian government has worked closely
with the IMF, practiced careful monetary policy, and made
significant progress with privatization. The government
also has liberalized the trade regime sufficiently in order
to guarantee Jordan's membership in the Word Trade
Organization (2000), an association agreement with the
European Union (2000), and a Free Trade Agreement with
the United States (2000). Jordan has also signed a Bilateral
Investment Treaty with the United States.
Handicrafts: Jordan has become famous for the high
standard of crafts available to tourists and local people

to create fabulous glass objects in styles typical of the
region. The nomadic Bedouin's flocks of sheep are fine
providers of wool. Woven on small looms and made into all
types of goods. One of the most rewarding purchases to
make is that of an Arab oriental rug or carpet. Every rug has
its own character, its own special feel and unique design.
Mosaic of Jordan: The ancient art of the mosaic consists
of pressing ceramic or glass fragments (known as tessera)
into wet plaster to create detailed and ornate works of
art. These creation unite form with function, decorating
churches, monasteries and public gathering places with
stories, maps, writings and murals. The mosaics are
invaluable in providing historians with the names and dates
of important historical figures and events, all of which aid
in delineating the ancient history of Christianity in the area.
The mosaics of Jordan most frequently originated during

centuries AD.
Weaving: In the past, both nomadic Bedouins and villagers
created hand woven rugs using ground looms or upright
looms. This handicraft began to fade away as the Bedouins
started to settle. In order to preserve the art, however,
Jordanian artisans worked in partnership with the Save
The Children Charity Organization and the Noor Al-Hussein
Foundation to establish the Bani Hameeda Project, a
self-help rug weaving "Cottage Industry" which provides
independent supplemental income for rural and urban
women. Jordanians continue to weave handmade rugs in
the traditional dark shades of green, red, black and orange,
although in recent years light pastel colors have also
become popular.
Ceramics: Probably the most ancient craft in Jordan is
the creation of earthenware products out of silsal (Arabic
for clay). Pottery was first invented in the Levant in the
6th millennium B.C. and, according to some, its invention

Coarsely-fired vases, pots and plates are placed on a
rotating wheel. Then, the artist makes his or her choice of
brushes and colors, and begins to paint. Each artist tries
to outmaster the others, and the styles of the greatest are
imitated by other craftpersons.
Music: Music is also important in Jordanian life. Traditional
Arabic music is based on a five-tone scale, unlike our
Western seven tone system. Its rhythms are elaborate.
Songs often tell stories of family, honour, love and death.
Most instrumentalists accompany a vocalist rather than
playing on their own, and improvisation is common. Some
Arabic instruments include the oud (similar to a lute), the
mizmarmujwiz or nay (both types of flute), the rababah
(a type of violin with one string), and the gerbeh (like
bagpipes). Small drums, played on the lap, are used to
keep the rhythm. American pop and rock music is popular
with younger Jordanians.
The oud (or ud) is one of the most popular instruments in
Middle eastern music. Its name derives from the Arabic for
'wood', and this refers to the strips of wood used to make
its rounded body. In Greece it is known as the outi and in
Iran as the barbat. The neck of the oud, which is short in
comparison to the body, has no frets and this contributes
to its unique sound. The most common string combination
is five pairs of strings tuned in unison and a single bass
string, although up to thirteen strings may be found. Strings
are generally made of nylon or gut, and are plucked with
a plectrum known as a risha or mizrap. Another distinctive
feature of the oud is its head, with the tuning pegs bent
back at an angle to the neck. The oud used in the Arab

world is slightly different to that found in Turkey, Armenia
and Greece. Different tunings are used and the Turkishstyle oud has a brighter tone than its Arab counterpart. The
European lute is a descendant of the oud, from which it
takes its name (al-oud).
Glass blowing: Like ceramics, glass blowing is a craft which
combines practicality with beauty. the craft of glass blowing
has been perfected over 2000 years, but today it is a dying
art in the Middle East. It takes years of practice for craftsman
to master the art of glass blowing. With a hollow pipe he
scoops up a lump of oozing glass and, while continually
rotating the glowing orb, blows through the pipe. When he
has expanded the glass to its desired size, it is then put in
a special chamber to cool down from the 900C furnace.
The traditional center of glassware artistry in the region is
Hebron. However, some of the finest of all Hebron glass
blowers can now be found in and around Amman. Today in

Sand Bottles: For decades, bottles filled with brightly
colored sand have been made by artisans in Aqaba &
Petra. The bottles are inexpensive, and their playful
patterns unique to Jordan. It is said that a Petra Native,
Mohammed Abdullah Othman, taught himself the craft as
a child, collecting his material from nearby mountains and
caves. Since there are more than twenty naturally occurring
shades of sandstone, Othman and his imitators have no
need for dyes.
Jordanian Cuisine: Rated among the finest in the world,
Jordanian cuisine, while unique, is part of the Arabian
culinary heritage. Food in the Arab world is more than
simply a matter of nourishment. Feasting is a preoccupation
and food is often at the center of social customs. In fact,
eating rituals are very important throughout the Middle

East, and, as a guest, you can be assured vast platters of
succulent and nutritious food will be produced to honor your
visit. Dishes will satisfy even the health conscious, as many
of them are prepared with grain, cheese, yogurt, fresh and
dried fruits and vegetables. The national dish of Jordan is
the Bedouin specialty called “Mansaf” – lamb seasoned with
aromatic herbs, sometimes lightly spiced, cooked in dried
yogurt, and served on a large platter with huge quantities
of rice, sprinkled with almonds, pine kernels, and other
nuts. Feasting on Mansaf is taken seriously, and hours are
spent in its preparation. This extravagant cuisine is served
primarily on special occasions such as weddings, birthdays,
and anniversaries, as it possesses an important symbolic
function within social gatherings.
Embroidery: This is one of the most important traditional
crafts of Jordanian women and one which has, in recent
years, been incorporated into high fashion. Elegant gowns
and jackets have been created using traditional needlework
together with rich, Middle Eastern fabrics and these designer
collections are frequently modelled on the catwalks of
Jordan's hotels. It all began much more simply, however,
with the young Jordanian girl learning the craft of embroidery
in her village and often being judged through her skill on the
quality of bridegroom she would attract. Every Jordanian
girl from every social class at one time embroidered her
own trousseau, which consisted of between six and twelve
loosely-cut robes and which lasted her for a lifetime. This
art of embroidery has been carried over into the making
of cushions, which grace the decor of many Jordanian
homes. Colours range from shades of red, maroon, purple
and pink, with bright additions of green, orange and gold.

may be the world's oldest known purpose-built church. This Aqaba early
church dates from the late 3rd or early 4th century AD.
Flag of Jordan
Jordan flag contains three equal horizontal bands of black (top, the
Abbassid Caliphate of Islam), white (the Ummayyad Caliphate of Islam),
and green (the Fatimid Caliphate of Islam) with a red isosceles triangle
(representing the Great Arab Revolt of 1916) based on the hoist side
bearing a small white seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven verses of
the opening Sura (Al-Fatiha) of the Holy Koran; the seven points on the
star represent faith in One God, humanity, national spirit, humility, social
justice, virtue, and aspirations.
People of Jordan
The population of Jordan is almost entirely Arab. TheCircassians and
the Armenians form the racial minorities but are barely 1 percent of
the population. Jordan is 79 percent urban; nomads and semi nomads
represent about 5 percent. Sunni Muslims are a majority and Shia Muslims
form a small minority. Christians, about one-third of whom belong to the
Greek Orthodox Church, represent 4 percent of the population

Amman: Amman the capital of Jordan is a city which
geographically straddles seven hills and historically sits
astride many centuries. The city's modern buildings blend
with the remnants of ancient civilizations. The profusion
of gleaming white houses, kebab stalls with roasting
meat, and tiny cafes where rich Arabian coffee is sipped
in the afternoon sunshine, conjure a mood straight from
a thousand and one nights. It is a city with a timeless
ambiance, where a slight detour off the beaten track reveals
the wonders of a Bronze Age settlement or a Byzantine
monastery. In its Souqs (markets), you can bargain for
fruit, perfume, gold or other exquisite luxuries of the Middle
East. For Businessmen, Amman offers the most up-todate convention and communication facilities. Its strategic
position and convivial atmosphere make it one of the

Jerash “Gerasa”: “The most well preserved roman city
outside Rome”
A visit to the spectacular Roman ruins of Jerash immediately
transports the visitor two thousand years back in time.
The city's many splendid monumental remains, still retain
the atmosphere of the once thriving metropolis, famous
in its own time for magnificent temples, amphitheaters,
and plazas. From the buildings and the many other well
preserved structures, it is easy to imagine the city in its
heyday: Down the colonnaded streets, chariots would have
trundled, their wheels etching ever deeper the already wellworn grooves.
Jabbok River: this place was mentioned in Ge 32 as the
river where Jacob took his two wives, and his two slavegirls, and his eleven children. And he passed over the ford
Jabbok in modern Jordan, There Jacob wrestled with God
and with men, and prevailed. And God blessed Jacob there.
And Jacob called the name of the place Penuel, because
there he saw God "face to face".

trading cities in the eastern Mediterranean area. Set in

Ajloun Castle: Was built In AD 1184-85 by the nephew
of Saladin on the summit of Jabal Bani 'Awaf, on the
site of what is now Qalaat-al-Rabad. Its dominating
position, allowed an extra ordinarily wide vantage over the
surrounding lands, affording protection against the Crusader
forces, permitting Saladin to concentrate on the iron mines
at Ajloun without hindrance. Its view is one of the best in
the Middle East. High above sea level it looks down on the
Dead Sea. The bulk of the castle is in good condition, and
most of the high-vaulted ceilings are still intact.

from the late Ottoman period, with their characteristic longarched windows. The city was built on two hills, one of
which has the ruins of a 13th-century fortress. The town
was known as Saltus in Byzantine times and was the seat
of a bishopric. The town is an agricultural market and an
administrative centre.
Qusair Amra or Amra bath house: Amra gains its fame
from the outstanding frescoes adorning its interior walls

that Kharana was conceived as a lavish meeting place for

heart of the semi-arid Jordanian Eastern Desert, one of
several beautiful nature reserves managed by the Royal
Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN). Its attractions
include several natural and ancient built pools, a seasonally
flooded marshland, and a large mudflat know as Qa'a AlAzraq. A wide variety of birds stop at the Reserve each year
for a rest during their arduous migration routes between
Asia and Africa. Some stay for the winter or breed within
the protected areas of the wetland. Continue to Shawmari
reserve for visiting. The Shawmari Reserve was created in
1975 by the RSCN as a breeding centre for endangered or
locally extinct wildlife. Today, following breeding programmes
with some of the world's leading wildlife parks and zoos, this
small, 22 sq km reserve is a thriving protected environment for
some of the most rare species of animals in the Middle East.
Oryx, ostriches, gazelles and onagers - which are depicted
on many 6th century Byzantine mosaics - are rebuilding their
populations and reasserting their presence in this safe haven,
protected from hunting and habitat destruction that nearly
wiped them out. Back to Mujib Reserve Chalets for overnight.

Breakfast, The Gulf of Aqaba is famous for its marine
wildlife. It is the north-eastern arm of the Red Sea,
measuring a length of 180km and expanding to a width
of 25km, with a shoreline shared by Egypt, Saudi Arabia,
Holy Land and Jordan. The Gulf of Aqaba has the world’s
northernmost coral reef ecosystem. An average water
temperature of 23° Celsius, the absence of stormy
weather and mild water currents have created a hospitable
environment for the growth of corals. Favourable salinity
levels are perfect for the myriads of other marine lifeforms. As a result, it is home to 110 species of soft corals
and 120 species of hard corals. The reefs that fringe the
Gulf host over 1000 species of fish, corals, crustaceans,
and mammals living in its waters. Nocturnal animals such
as the crab, shrimp, and lobster appear in search of food
in the dark hours of the night. Seasonal visitors to the
Gulf of Aqaba include sea turtles, dolphins, sea cows, and
harmless whale sharks. Aqaba is the only coastal city in
Jordan. This beautiful town, surrounded by fascinating
colourful mountains and the blue waters of the Red Sea,
expands over 27km of shoreline on the Gulf of Aqaba. The
town is well-organized and under continuous development.

When visiting Holy Land during the summer months you
will need light clothing – short sleeve shirts, T-shirts, shorts,
sandals, beach shoes and a bathing suit. It is wise to
have a light sweater or jacket because nights spent in the
mountains and desert can be cool.
If visiting Holy Land during winter, warmer clothes will be
necessary - jacket or coat (preferably a raincoat, warm
shoes, umbrella, scarf, gloves. Winter in Holy Land is not as
cold as in Europe but can be quite chilly on rainy days.
It is a good idea to have a small bag or backpack to be used
for day trips or day tours, and if you are visiting Eilat or the
Dead Sea, remember your bathing suit as even in winter
it can be hot enough to swim. Do not forget sunscreen, a
hat for protection from the sun and sunglasses, all essential
items in all seasons.
If you intend to go hiking so that you can see the country
not only from a tour bus window you will need sturdy shoes
and always carry plenty of water with you.
The electric current is 220 volts AC, 50 Hertz, single phase.
Most sockets in Holy Land are three pronged but many also
accept some two-pronged European plugs. Adaptors and/or
transformers may be required for Electric shavers, travelling
irons and other small appliances. These can be purchased
in Holy Land.

Islamic mission (16 months after the Hijrah), that Muhammad
(peace be upon him) was instructed to change the Qibla from
Jerusalem to Mecca (Qur'an 2:142-144). It is reported that
the Prophet Muhammad said, "There are only three mosques
to which you should embark on a journey: the sacred mosque
(Mecca, Saudi Arabia), this mosque of mine (Madinah,
Saudi Arabia), and the mosque of Al-Aqsa (Jerusalem)."
Site of Night Journey and Ascension: It is Jerusalem that
Muhammad (peace be upon him) visited during his night
journey and ascension (called Isra' and Mi'raj). In one
evening, the angel Gabriel miraculously took the Prophet
from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to the Furthest Mosque
(Al-Aqsa) in Jerusalem. He was then taken up to the heavens
to be shown the signs of God. The Prophet met with previous
prophets and led them in prayer. He was then taken back to
Mecca. The whole experience (which Muslim commentators
take literally and Muslims believe as a miracle) lasted a few
hours of a night. This night journey further reinforced the link
between Mecca and Jerusalem as holy cities, and serves as
an example of every Muslim's deep devotion and spiritual
connection with Jerusalem.

Jericho:
Know as Ariha, the city of Palms, is the oldest inhabited city
on Earth, dating back almost 12.000 years. Excavations at
the Tel-Al-Sultan ruins show Jericho settlements as early as
10.000 B.C.E. It has an abundance of water sources, and it
is believed that the fresh spring water at Tel-al-Sultan is the
reason for early inhabitance in Jericho. Its original name,

One of the majestic sites is Hisham Palace. This beautiful
desert ruin of Umayyad Caliph Hisham Ibn Abdul Malik was
completed in the eighth century. Hisham Palace contains
royal buildings, a mosque, fountains, and spectacular mosaic
floors. Tourists enjoy the remarkable open-air presentation
with a walking tour through temples and lush mosaics. Many
of the most delicate artifacts from Hisham Palace are at the
Rockfeller Museum in Jerusalem. Qumran, which is about
20 kilometers south of Jericho, is the site of the Monastery
of Essenes, where more than 2.000 Dead Sea scrolls were
founded by an Arab shepherd in the late 1940s.
Nabi Musa is a beautiful 12th century mazar (pilgrimage
