where healthcare and community come together
Friends Foundation implements Grateful Patient program
When you want to express your gratitude a different way
Have you or a family member had a patient
care experience at SGCMH that went above
and beyond your expectations? Did a nurse
or doctor comfort you when you needed it? Or
maybe it was that staff member that answered a
question that made your experience at SGCMH
one that made you feel special and keeps you
coming back? It could have been a lifesaving
procedure or a visit from a volunteer during your
stay. Say “thank you” by making a gift in honor
of those who made a difference to you.
We understand that your health is important
and you have a choice for your healthcare. The
hospital staff at SGCMH wants to make sure we
provide you with quality care every time.
SGCMH Friends Foundation is implementing a
Grateful Patient Program to help identify and
recognize exceptional employees who deliver
quality services that exceeds your
expectations. The Grateful Patient program
provides patients and their families an
opportunity to show gratitude to the physician, nurse or other caregiver who played a special role in your care. We invite you
to remember that individual or department today, by making a Grateful Patient contribution in his/her honor.

patient
How does it work?
If an employee has exceeded you or your family’s expectations you can make a
special tribute in that employee’s name to our grateful patient program. You can designate your gift to a certain department or let it be used where the greatest need is for
the hospital. When a gift is received, the person whom you are honoring will be sent an
acknowledgment letter along with your personalized card, and, recognition of you and
your special
worker in the
Foundation newsletter.
You can donate as little or as much as you
want, every donation is important and it tells our
employees that they are making a difference.
Recognize a number of employees or an entire
department with one gift. You may participate in
three ways either online, the mail or visit the
Foundation office at the hospital.
Online
1. Write a brief personal message of appreciation to your caregiver(s).
2. Make a gift in honor of your caregiver
When making a gift online, please select “Grateful Patient” as the Designation.
By Mail
1. Download the “Grateful Patient” form, complete it and return the form to:

Just between friends
by Leo “Chipper” Basler, Friends President
As we celebrated our 10th year as
an organization, your support made
2013 a great year for the Friends
Foundation. Our big three events:
Ride to Survive, Golf Classic and
the new Black Tie Gala raised over
$44,000 for technology and other
needed improvements to help
SGCMH better serve the community.
For the year your donations helped
the hospital improve services in Oncology, Women’s
Wellness, Lab and Dietary. The Friends board members also
welcomed Shawn Long as Director of Friends Foundation.
As I look back on the Friends history and what you have
contributed over the years for our small hospital I can’t help
but be impressed. You helped us provide funds to purchase
a new 64-slice CT scanner as well as update our
Emergency Department and hospital lobby. Your
donations also provided funds to remodel the waterbirth
suite. Keeping our newborns safe was a top priority and
your dollars helped the hospital to acquire an infant security
system. Métis Breast Care used funds to pay for medical
supplies for patients and we purchased new equipment for
Bloomsdale Medical Centre and our Oncology Department.
Of course it’s important to know where your organization
has come from as it is just as important to know where it is
going and the Friends Foundation is no different. In 2014 we
are concentrating our efforts to make this year bigger and
better. We are focusing more on planned giving, a grateful
patient program, and improving our big three fundraising
events. We plan to jump start a new fund focused on
improving the hospital surgical services and our Pointe
Basse Family Health Care office. The fund will also be used
to upgrade Diagnostic Imaging services and acquire
equipment for the hospital to offer more Telemedicine
services.
The 2014 Ride to Survive is coming up on Saturday, June
21. The funds raised will go to support the Oncology
department at the hospital. The funds will help the
department provide patients with upgraded equipment and
support services. Also, the Oncology department will kick-off
its first annual community education initiative. The program
will provide “need to know” information on different types of
cancer annually, starting with colon cancer for 2014. In the
past we have used these funds to purchase patient comfort
supply kits, a massage chair for patient comfort,
computers, garden supplies, the C.A.R.E. channel and many
other items. This year we are planning three community
events to help educate the community about colon cancer.
Our goal is to be able to assist the hospital in future needs
no matter how big or small and with your continued support
we can, I hope to see you at the next big event! Help plant
the seed that continues to grow our community. For more
information on the Friends Foundation contact Shawn Long,
Director of Friends Foundation at 573-883-7725.
Foundation welcomes
two board members in 2014
Mary Odneal
As of March 1, 2013 Mary and her
husband, Dr. William Odneal will have
lived in Ste. Genevieve for 31 years.
When asked why she wanted to get
involved with the Foundation Board she
said “The wonderful experiences being
at this hospital for the birth of 2 children,
broken bones and various maladies with
my children; seeing how the hospital has
grown and how community oriented it is, all made me want to
give something back to it and to the community that has
embraced me and my family.”
Mary enjoys spending time with her children and
grandchildren. When she is not working at her husband’s
optometry office she enjoys reading and would like to get back
into quilting and crocheting. Her community involvement is vast
with her previously dedicating time to the Valle School Board
and their auction committee as well as the Parish RCIA and as
a Girl Scout Leader. In addition to serving on the Friends
Foundation Board, she is currently a member of the Handbell
Choir and the Parish council.
Jim Francis
An active Ste. Genevieve resident, he
is one of two new board members. Jim is
a SEMO graduate who moved to Ste.
Genevieve in 1975 to serve as an
Assistant Administrator to Carl Virgin
here at the hospital. In the position as
Assistant Hospital Administrator he
developed a love for the hospital and that
is what drove him to get involved with the
Foundation Board. Presently, he is
employed with State Farm and celebrating his 30th year of
service.
When asked why he wanted to volunteer for the Friends
board Jim said, “The hospital has always been close to my
heart since I left in 1984. I felt by serving on the Friends board
it would allow me to continue to provide support for the
hospital facilities we have here in the County. I am so proud of
how the hospital has grown in the past 30 years and hope to
see it serving the community for a long time.” Jim and his wife
Rosemary have 2 daughters, both graduates from SIU
Carbondale.
The Friends Foundation is now on Facebook!!
