Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity in
Montgomery, Texas. Our mission is to rescue and provide a loving,
exceptional home to non-releasable wolves and wolfdogs, and to
educate the public about these animals.

Rescue
We welcomed two new rescued animals into our family in 2014: Liam and Lapua.

Lapua
Owned as a “pet” in an area where wolfdog ownership is
illegal, Liam was confiscated by Animal Control and had a
few weeks to find him a home or be euthanized. Luckily
we were able to save Liam and pair him with Lakota, with
whom he grew very close in their short time together.
Lapua is still very young; she was born in March of 2014.
She was given to us by a private owner in central Texas who
loved her but recognized he was unable to give her the life
she needed.
Sanctuary

With the help of several amazing Eagle Scouts and their troops,
we constructed new, sturdy, weatherproof houses for eight of
our animals.

We completed construction on our new building to house our
gift shop/kitchen/office.

Big Boy made enormous strides. He and Mystery love each other
deeply and play constantly, and he now has a number of
volunteers he will let pet him.

Our animals are in the best health they’ve ever been, thanks in
part to our continued efforts to perfect their diets, and the daily
enrichment and attention they receive.

We succeeded in changing the legal labels of the several dogs
who had come to us misrepresented as “wolves,” providing us
the opportunity to find loving forever homes for them.

Education, Outreach, and Exposure

In 2014 we welcomed over 6,000 visitors from over
30 states and 11 countries.

We instituted several new tour experiences for
visitors, including Howl Nights and VIP tours.

Our annual Open Day festival and fundraiser drew
nearly 1,500 visitors, twice last year’s total!

We increased our Facebook presence and our
followers grew to 6,700.

We began offering off-site presentations to school
groups, community organizations, and others.

We welcomed dozens of Scout groups for Akela
Awards, camping, and service projects.

SFWS was profiled by numerous news organizations, including Postcards magazine, Fox 4 News
Dallas, KAMU, KUHF, Lonestar Internet Radio, and the Conroe Courier.

1999 — 2014
2014 was a year with lots of accomplishments and exciting developments, but
also some heartbreak, as we lost three
members of our family: Apache, Koa,
and Lakota. We will miss all of them
tremendously.
Lakota
1999 — 2014
Koa
Apache, a high-content wolfdog and
Lakota’s companion of many years,
passed away in February at the age
of 14. He, Lakota, and several other
wolfdogs had been bred at a roadside attraction in Alaska and sold to
tourists from California as “pets.”
They were rescued by a sanctuary in
Oregon, and when that sanctuary
closed in 2010, SFWS took Apache
and Lakota.

Lakota was Apache’s companion,
and along with Apache had called
SFWS home since 2010. She passed
away several months after him at the
age of 15 from inoperable cancer. At
SFWS, Lakota went from being
frightened of all people to having
many favorite volunteers whom she
would beg for pets!
Koa was a dog (malamute mix) who was misrepresented as a “pure wolf” by his breeder, meaning
he could not be adopted out by a shelter. He joined
SFWS after his caretaker became ill. He was so
sweet and outgoing, and met thousands of visitors
in the course of his work as a SFWS ambassador.

Relocation
Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary will be moving to new property in the next several years, in
order to have the space and flexibility for continued growth and expansion and for long-term
sustainability. While such a move presents a number of significant challenges, it will not only
allow for future growth but also provide us with a wonderful opportunity to improve upon
our existing facilities. Plans for the new facilities include:

Minimum size of 5,000 ft2
Numerous sources of interest and enrichment, many trees, and lots of grass
Running water features
Multi-tiered platforms
Artificial dens
Areas in which animals can hide from public view
More secure gate systems (guillotine gates)
Improved drainage
Two smaller shift pens (chutes) per each enclosure
Gaps of at least 3-4 feet between each enclosure (no shared fence lines)
Other Facilities




At least one smaller quarantine enclosure
Perimeter fencing
Existing portable building (containing our office, food prep room, and gift shop) can be
moved with us
Housing on site

Such a move will involve considerable expense (particularly purchasing property and fencing
costs). You can greatly assist us by contributing to our Relocation Fund. For more
