The 29th Annual Harry Jerome Awards
April 30th, 2011
MESSAGE FROM THE BBPA PRESIDENT
T
he Black Business and Professional Association
and our presenting sponsor, RBC Royal Bank
are proud and honoured to welcome all of
you to the 29th Annual BBPA Harry Jerome awards.
Tonight we unveil 16 outstanding awards that will
be conferred to some of Canada’s most deserving
honourees, under the banner, “We Strive! We Excel!
We are…!” We congratulate the illustrious line-up
of our 2011 Harry Jerome Award winners who have
strived for excellence, raised the bar, and delivered
outstanding achievements in their various pursuits
and disciplines. These accomplishments are
certainly significant in and of themselves; however,
I would be remiss not to pay homage to the
individual that inspired the commencement of
tonight’s proceedings.
It was just little over half of century ago that
Harry Jerome burst onto the international Track and
Field scene. He set world records in the 100m and
100yd sprints and was proud to represent his country
at three Olympiads. After he retired from the world
of Track and Field, he pursued graduate studies,
earned a Master of Science degree, and he played
an integral role in advocating and motivating youth
to excel. He received the Order of Canada and
carried with him not just the hopes and dreams of
African Canadians, but the aspirations, determination
and courage of an entire nation – and he did so with
pride, passion and a great sense of responsibility.
Today, 50 years later, these same attributes have
penetrated the DNA of our community and produced
some of the best in class that will be honoured at
tonight’s gala. Undoubtedly, Harry Jerome’s proud
legacy and blueprint for excellence are reflected in
the achievements of tonight’s award recipients. It is
evident that “We Strive, We Excel, We Are…!”
In the name of excellence, community advocacy,
determination, and courage, let’s be reminded of
two community giants who have fallen very recently,
namely the late Dudley Laws and Dr. Ouida Wright.
These individuals have given unselfishly to our
community, therefore, I would like to pause for a
moment as we celebrate excellence, to remember
and honour them. “We Strive, We Excel, We Are…!”
The Harry Jerome Awards is considered to
be the preeminent African Canadian awards in
our nation. This year, we celebrate world class
achievements of our 2011 winners in a variety
of fields, including Academics, Arts, Media,
Entertainment, Athletics, Business,
Community Service, Health Sciences,
Leadership, Professional Excellence,
Technology and Innovation, and
Entrepreneurship. We also celebrate
the recipients of our Lifetime
Achievement Award, the President’s
Award, and the Trailblazer Award. For
the first time this year, we have added
a new award to our annual honours,
the Diversity Award.
It is with a sense of gratitude,
appreciation and humility, that I
extend a heartfelt thank you to the
financial muscles and nurturing pillars
behind our organization. Most of our
sponsors have committed to support
the BBPA financially over the next
three years, as it relates to the Harry Jerome Awards,
The National Scholarship Fund, The National Black
Business and Professional Convention, as well as
other BBPA events. I must it make clear that our
sponsors are not investing in the BBPA to be a part
of an ‘event.’ Our sponsors invest because they
believe in diversity, and they want to ensure the
delivery of our mandate as well as our success. Our
success is their success and our country’s success,
as it engenders a more vibrant economy, helps to
shape and define a greater society, and builds a
robust community for many generations to come. I
want to extend a special thank you to our presenting
sponsor RBC, Royal Bank, for partnering with the
BBPA to present these awards. We appreciate
RBC’s commitment to the BBPA, and your financial
support will never go unnoticed. Special thanks
to Scotiabank, our sponsor of the Women of
Honour, a pre-Harry Jerome Awards event, and
the Harry Jerome Awards Live Auction. The BBPA
would like to recognize all of our major sponsors
for this year’s awards, including Aon Hewitt, Bell
Canada, BMO Financial Group, CIBC, TD Bank,
Intellipharmaceutics, Sterling Dental, the Ontario
Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, Nursing
and Homemakers, Inc., Denham Jolly, Planet Africa,
SWAY magazine, CBC, and Rogers TV. In addition, I
would like to recognize one of our newest sponsors
at the BBPA, Chevrolet. Chevrolet has strongly come
on board, occupying key areas in the Awards and
Scholarship spaces, with discussions to collaborate

on other BBPA initiatives. We look forward to an
amazing partnership in the future as we both seek to
motivate this and the next generations to be inspired
and empowered in their quest for excellence. On
behalf of the BBPA, I would also like to thank the
Toronto Congress Centre for the luxurious service we
receive every year.
The BBPA would not be able to host this grand
occasion without all of our donors, advertisers, youth
table sponsors, and media who have helped to
promote these awards and the values we encourage
and represent in the Black community.
We thank everyone who has dedicated their
time and energy into this auspicious occasion.
Special thanks to our Co-Chairs Karlyn Percil and Pat
Gloudon for their amazing dedication, commitment,
and leadership in delivering this award show. Thank
you Michelle Ambrose for making the room beautiful,
and thanks Eddie Bullen for bringing melodious
sounds to our ears. We thank our new Artistic
Director Aadin Church in joining our team this year
and for his dedication and commitment to his new
role. Thanks to Koree Haye for his unwavering
support as a co-producer. Brian Henry, we thank you
for the video presentation of our winners. We are
also appreciative of our office staff, Adrianna Lewis,
Charla-Maye Cooper, and Kimberly Nembhard, as
well as our volunteer Shanna Thompson, for their
hard work and devotion to the BBPA. We want
to recognize Perry-Rose Flash, our program book
designer, for the many hours that have gone into
this souvenir program book. We cannot neglect
to mention Mr. Cleve Sandy and SAV audio/visual
in helping to make this event a vibrant and lively
experience. Special mention is in order for our hosts
for this evening, Dwight Drummond and Garvia
Bailey from CBC.
We thank Senator Donald Oliver for accepting
to be the keynote speaker at this year’s gala. We

thank all of our artists, participants and volunteers in
this evening’s gala. Your effort is always appreciated!
The BBPA expresses its deep regards for the
patrons and distinguished guests who enrich the
lives of those who are connected to our organization
and the community. We thank the Jerome family for
your committed support to the BBPA. We appreciate
your partnership in ensuring that the legacy of the
life that Harry Jerome lived is mirrored in the lives
of the children and youth in our community. A big
shout out to our army of youth: you are the change
we seek and we are depending on you! A special
thanks to my colleagues, the Board of Directors,
Board of Trustees and Advisory Council for allowing
us to lead the BBPA to new light. Also, heartfelt and
sincere thanks to my family, my husband Harold and
my children Harolyn and D’Juvayne for sharing me
with our community. A family that sacrifices together,

BIOGRAPHY OF
Harry Jerome
I
t is no coincidence that the Awards are
in memory of African Canadian Harry
Jerome. One of the premiere track athletes
of his time, Harry’s physical successes were
partnered with scholastic excellence and social
consciousness. Despite his relatively brief life,
Harry left a substantial legacy and a blueprint
for success.
He was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
in 1940 and in the 1950s his family moved to
North Vancouver where they were the only Black
people in their conservative neighbourhood.
Harry went on to set the standard as the
world’s fastest man, and represented Canada at
two Pan American Games, two Commonwealth
Games, and three Olympics. At the 1962
Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia,
Harry completely severing his left quadriceps
muscle; most orthopaedic surgeons said that
he would never run again. However, Harry
concentrated on his return, and after months
of physiotherapy and quiet determination, he
achieved “the greatest comeback”. In 1964,
Harry returned to track and field’s largest stage
- the Tokyo Olympics. With a 30-centimetre
scar on his left thigh, a testament to the
severity of his injury, Harry would capture
the bronze medal in the 100-metre dash
and narrowly missed a second medal in the
200-metre
Outside of athletics, he earned both
undergraduate and graduate degrees in
science at the University of Oregon and was
always conscious of the challenges facing
African Canadians. He obtained equipment
for young athletes who could not afford the
expensive gear, created opportunities for
Blacks outside the sports arena, and was a
vocal opponent of the misrepresentation of
African Canadians in Canadian television and
wage discrimination barriers against Blacks.
After his retirement from active
competition in 1968, Harry went on to work
with the Federal Ministry of Sport. He was
named British Columbia’s Athlete of the
Century, and, in 1971, received the Order of
Canada as a testament to his achievements.
In 1982, Harry Jerome died suddenly at the
age of 42. Harry Jerome took on the concerns
of a community and a country, epitomizing
excellence, determination, and dedication. He
truly is a Canadian hero.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESENTING SPONSOR
Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
To win a Harry Jerome Award, you need to have made a tremendous
difference. In fact, many past winners have helped shape our national

Tonight’s winners are no different.
I’m extremely proud that RBC once-again has the honour of being the
presenting partner of the Harry Jerome Awards. Our long-standing
relationship with the Black Business and Professionals Association (BBPA)
is built on a shared value of promoting diversity for growth and innovation in
our communities, and there are few better opportunities to recognize those
values than tonight.
Thank you for being part of tonight’s festivities, and please join me in
celebrating tonight’s winners – including the recipient of this year’s RBC

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
F
irst of all, I would like to say congratulations
to the 2011 award recipients. They embody
this year’s theme, ‘We Strive, We Excel,
We Are,’ having inspired so many with their
outstanding list of accomplishments. To them I
say Thank you! It is quite evident that they tapped
into their inner greatness, strove tirelessly to
excel, and have now become role models in their
respective fields. Selecting the recipient for each
Award category is no easy task, and I would like
to say Thank you to our judges for their service.
To our sponsors – Thank you so much for your
unwavering support. You too have demonstrated
that you will continue to labor with us on our
journey to excellence. For those who have yet
to embark on this journey, now is a great time to
start! Thank you to the 2011 Awards Committee,
Cleve Sandy, Koree Haye, Aadin Church for your
dedication and support. A special thank you
to Charla-Maye Cooper, Adrianna Lewis, Pat
Gloudon, Michelle Ambrose, Osborne Barnswell,
Pauline Christian, Perry-Rose Flash and all the
other volunteers who assisted in ensuring a
successful event! To the BBPA Board of Directors
– thank you!
Ladies and gentleman, the keys needed to
strive and excel lies within you. Tap into them –
they are just waiting to be discovered! The late
Harry Jerome tapped into his inner greatness,
not only as an Athlete but as a social activist who
believed in equality for all. As we continue to
embrace his legacy, I am proud of the addition
of the new Diversity Award category this year
which will be presented to an individual who has
been instrumental in championing diversity &
inclusion. We thank Harry for striving to ensure
equality for all.
Know that excellence begins with you. In
order for us as individuals to strive for personal
excellence, we must first ensure that we have a
good understanding of who we are, our abilities
and what makes us great. A great understanding
of who we are will enable and empower us to
work through any personal obstacles which
may come our way. What I have learnt, is that
greatness can only be obtained if we believe
that we can achieve. This year, I am extremely
honored to be a part of the celebration of
another round of outstanding recipients. Thank
you for inspiring me.
I urge each and every one of you to be the
best YOU, as by doing so you will effortlessly
strive and excel in all that you do. And remember
as We Strive, We Excel, and as We Excel, we are
everything we want to be and more! Do enjoy the
evening and thank you for joining us.

transplants, for gene therapy and for a variety of
genetic and acquired diseases. Dr. Akabutu’s team
has developed methods to purify, freeze and store
stem cells from the umbilical cords of newborns.
Dr. Akabutu is also celebrated as the originator
of a program that, since 1978, has provided highquality comprehensive care, as well as education
and support for people suffering from haemophilia.
In 2004, in recognition of his pioneering work, the
Northern Alberta Comprehensive Haemophilia

ost talk about changing the world –
LaShawn Murray is one of the few who
work to make change a reality. While
growing up in Toronto, she realized at an early
age that not only was her love of reading and
writing key to her continued scholastic success,
but that literacy was one of the most effective tools
for social change.
LaShawn hadn’t even reached her teens when
she began to use literacy to knock down the doors
of poverty, tyranny and hopelessness. LaShawn
contributed both her time and considerable
leadership skills to local and global initiatives such
as Reading for the Fun of It, World Literacy of
Canada’s project Big Day Out and Youth in Action.
As an active member of the Halton Youth
Advisory Committee, LaShawn continued her
drive to bring about social change through
her involvement in a number of school-based
initiatives. She co-founded the Invisible Children
Book Drive which collected over 39,000 books to
support literacy programs for children in Uganda,
organized an AIDS Run that raised $10,000 for the
Stephen Lewis Foundation and worked tirelessly on
other projects such as a Fashion Show to support
Sleeping Children Around the World and an

environmental conference for students across the
Halton School District.
LaShawn recently completed her final year of
an International Baccalaureate program at Robert
Bateman High School in Burlington, Ontario,
where she was not only an honour student but also
received the Bateman Best Award for Academics.
Now in her freshman year at the University of
Western Ontario, she is working on a combined
degree in business and medical science, with
the goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. Despite
her heavy class load, LaShawn continues to
advocate for literacy by lending her leadership
skills to organizations that share her commitment
to social change.
Over the years, LaShawn’s leadership abilities
and commitment to social change have earned her
many awards, including the Recognition Award for
Youth, Honourable Mention for the Canada’s Me
to We Award, the Future Aces Citizenship Award
and Scholarship, Guyana Award and Scholarship
and the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers. More
awards are certain to follow, but for leaders like
LaShawn the only reward that matters is seeing our
world change for the better.

MS. JADE JAGER CLARK
Young Entrepreneur Award
T
ireless entrepreneur Jade Jager Clark opened
her first company – a dance academy – at
age 18, while she was still attending school
full-time.
With an initial enrollment of a dozen or so,
Jade’s Hip Hop Academy now has 220 students,
operates seven days a week and recently moved to
a new and larger facility. Entrepreneurs by definition
take risks, both financial and personal, but Jade
also bucked the advice of industry insiders and
consultants by opening a business solely focused
on one genre of dance.
Located in Brampton, Ontario, Jade’s Hip Hop
Academy has a student population that spans five
continents and is renowned for being one of the
few dance studios in Ontario to bring “colour”
to the stage. Understanding the importance of
academic achievement and the need to build
important social skills, her Academy’s successful 5C
formula of Commitment, Completion, Consistency,
Confidence and Communication has helped her
students achieve greatness both in and outside of
the Academy.
Jade goes far beyond her duties as company
owner, Artistic Director, mentor, tutor and confidant.
Her Academy also provides full and partial
scholarships to those in financial need, and the
innovative Assistant/Student Teacher programs she
initiated provide her students with the opportunity
to develop critical business and leadership skills.
Jade began dancing, teaching and
choreographing at the age of 14 when she created
a dance team at her high school. Although Jade
had no dance or teaching experience, she excelled
at the art form and is now a leader in her genre.
While balancing demands of her business and
family life, Jade found time to earn a university
degree in Governance, Law and Management
while continuing her volunteer work, which includes
serving as a board member of Dance Ontario, Chair
of the Dance Ontario Youth Board and Director of
Dance for Youth Day.
Now celebrating five years of success, Jade’s
Hip Hop Academy remains one of the fastestgrowing dance studios in the GTA. Jade’s success
serves as an example that young professionals and
aspiring young entrepreneurs can achieve their
dream regardless of their age.

at MTO, he developed and delivered a number
of innovative programs that have enhanced the

throughout the ministry and earned him accolades
from his co-workers and supervisors. However,
it is his service in the Canadian Forces that best
illustrates Kevin’s commitment to professional
excellence.
Kevin began his military career at the age of

the position of Regimental Sergeant Major, the first
Black Canadian to achieve that distinction within
the regiment. During his almost 30 years with the

Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).
During the term of his posting in West Africa, Kevin

and non-military awards he has received over the
course of his adult life.
Born in Birmingham, England and raised in
Jamaica, Kevin has been married for 25 years and
counts his wife Dianne and his two children, Shana
and Channing, as “my biggest supporters.”
Before obtaining a Theology Degree in 1993,
Kevin earned his Civil Engineering Technician Certificate from Seneca College. His first choice in college was in fact Police Foundations; however the
program was full so Kevin decided to follow in his
engineer father’s footsteps. Kevin was recently selected as one of five alumni to receive the Seneca

BBPA NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The BBPA National Scholarship Fund – Helping our
youth strive to excel through education
I
t is the teacher that sees a talent, the pastor who
identifies a voice in the choir that launches a
thousand ships, it is a grandmother who collects
together what little money she has to ensure that
school books are bought, it is a community that
feels strong enough to ensure that the impossible, is
made possible. It is the person who chooses to hold
out their hand, take a chance on excellence, believe
strongly that the young mind in front of them, is
greater than they are even aware. For every person in
our community who has made a difference, there was
always someone who dared to believe they could.
We are proud when we make history in our
community. When we stand out not because of what
we are, but because of who we are.
Somewhere in this city, a little girl dreams of
becoming a doctor. A little boy sketches drawings
of big buildings he constructs in his mind, a child
that sings when nobody is listening but allows
her imagination to take her to a stage where she
graciously takes a bow. These are the young people
who need to take their dreams off the shelf and start
reaching for the stars.
Every donation that is given towards
scholarships, gives yet another student the ability
to stand out above the crowd, to excel at what they
do best with the support of our community. To our
scholarship recipients, we salute you. We raise our
hands in applause and champion you on your road
to success.
The BBPA thanks you, the people, for all your
love and support and continued generosity. From
yearly scholarships to regular donations from
community members who know each dollar is a
contribution to pathing the way for one student
to make a mark for us all. With your help, you
help our youth excel. Thank you for supporting
tomorrow’s leaders.
