Tonight we unveil 16 outstanding awards that will be conferred to some of Canada’s most deserving honourees, under the banner, “We Strive! We Excel! We are…!” We congratulate the illustrious line-up of our 2011 Harry Jerome Award winners who have strived for excellence, raised the bar, and delivered outstanding achievements in their various pursuits and disciplines. These accomplishments are certainly significant in and of themselves; however, I would be remiss not to pay homage to the individual that inspired the commencement of tonight’s proceedings. It was just little over half of century ago that Harry Jerome burst onto the international Track and Field scene. He set world records in the 100m and 100yd sprints and was proud to represent his country at three Olympiads. After he retired from the world of Track and Field, he pursued graduate studies, earned a Master of Science degree, and he played an integral role in advocating and motivating youth to excel. He received the Order of Canada and carried with him not just the hopes and dreams of African Canadians, but the aspirations, determination and courage of an entire nation – and he did so with pride, passion and a great sense of responsibility. Today, 50 years later, these same attributes have penetrated the DNA of our community and produced some of the best in class that will be honoured at tonight’s gala. Undoubtedly, Harry Jerome’s proud legacy and blueprint for excellence are reflected in the achievements of tonight’s award recipients. It is evident that “We Strive, We Excel, We Are…!” In the name of excellence, community advocacy, determination, and courage, let’s be reminded of two community giants who have fallen very recently, namely the late Dudley Laws and Dr. Ouida Wright. These individuals have given unselfishly to our community, therefore, I would like to pause for a moment as we celebrate excellence, to remember and honour them. “We Strive, We Excel, We Are…!” The Harry Jerome Awards is considered to be the preeminent African Canadian awards in our nation. This year, we celebrate world class achievements of our 2011 winners in a variety of fields, including Academics, Arts, Media, Entertainment, Athletics, Business, Community Service, Health Sciences, Leadership, Professional Excellence, Technology and Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. We also celebrate the recipients of our Lifetime Achievement Award, the President’s Award, and the Trailblazer Award. For the first time this year, we have added a new award to our annual honours, the Diversity Award. It is with a sense of gratitude, appreciation and humility, that I extend a heartfelt thank you to the financial muscles and nurturing pillars behind our organization. Most of our sponsors have committed to support the BBPA financially over the next three years, as it relates to the Harry Jerome Awards, The National Scholarship Fund, The National Black Business and Professional Convention, as well as other BBPA events. I must it make clear that our sponsors are not investing in the BBPA to be a part of an ‘event.’ Our sponsors invest because they believe in diversity, and they want to ensure the delivery of our mandate as well as our success. Our success is their success and our country’s success, as it engenders a more vibrant economy, helps to shape and define a greater society, and builds a robust community for many generations to come. I want to extend a special thank you to our presenting sponsor RBC, Royal Bank, for partnering with the BBPA to present these awards. We appreciate RBC’s commitment to the BBPA, and your financial support will never go unnoticed. Special thanks to Scotiabank, our sponsor of the Women of Honour, a pre-Harry Jerome Awards event, and the Harry Jerome Awards Live Auction. The BBPA would like to recognize all of our major sponsors for this year’s awards, including Aon Hewitt, Bell Canada, BMO Financial Group, CIBC, TD Bank, Intellipharmaceutics, Sterling Dental, the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, Nursing and Homemakers, Inc., Denham Jolly, Planet Africa, SWAY magazine, CBC, and Rogers TV. In addition, I would like to recognize one of our newest sponsors at the BBPA, Chevrolet. Chevrolet has strongly come on board, occupying key areas in the Awards and Scholarship spaces, with discussions to collaborate The 29th Annual Harry Jerome Awards April 30th, 2011 5 on other BBPA initiatives. We look forward to an amazing partnership in the future as we both seek to motivate this and the next generations to be inspired and empowered in their quest for excellence. On behalf of the BBPA, I would also like to thank the Toronto Congress Centre for the luxurious service we receive every year. The BBPA would not be able to host this grand occasion without all of our donors, advertisers, youth table sponsors, and media who have helped to promote these awards and the values we encourage and represent in the Black community. We thank everyone who has dedicated their time and energy into this auspicious occasion. Special thanks to our Co-Chairs Karlyn Percil and Pat Gloudon for their amazing dedication, commitment, and leadership in delivering this award show. Thank you Michelle Ambrose for making the room beautiful, and thanks Eddie Bullen for bringing melodious sounds to our ears. We thank our new Artistic Director Aadin Church in joining our team this year and for his dedication and commitment to his new role. Thanks to Koree Haye for his unwavering support as a co-producer. Brian Henry, we thank you for the video presentation of our winners. We are also appreciative of our office staff, Adrianna Lewis, Charla-Maye Cooper, and Kimberly Nembhard, as well as our volunteer Shanna Thompson, for their hard work and devotion to the BBPA. We want to recognize Perry-Rose Flash, our program book designer, for the many hours that have gone into this souvenir program book. We cannot neglect to mention Mr. Cleve Sandy and SAV audio/visual in helping to make this event a vibrant and lively experience. Special mention is in order for our hosts for this evening, Dwight Drummond and Garvia Bailey from CBC. We thank Senator Donald Oliver for accepting to be the keynote speaker at this year’s gala. We 6 The 29th Annual Harry Jerome Awards appreciate your contribution to the BBPA Advisory Council and your constant support of the BBPA. We thank all of our artists, participants and volunteers in this evening’s gala. Your effort is always appreciated! The BBPA expresses its deep regards for the patrons and distinguished guests who enrich the lives of those who are connected to our organization and the community. We thank the Jerome family for your committed support to the BBPA. We appreciate your partnership in ensuring that the legacy of the life that Harry Jerome lived is mirrored in the lives of the children and youth in our community. A big shout out to our army of youth: you are the change we seek and we are depending on you! A special thanks to my colleagues, the Board of Directors, Board of Trustees and Advisory Council for allowing us to lead the BBPA to new light. Also, heartfelt and sincere thanks to my family, my husband Harold and my children Harolyn and D’Juvayne for sharing me with our community. A family that sacrifices together, stays together!” Please join me in congratulating once more, our 2011 winners of the Harry Jerome Awards. Remember, “We Strive, We Excel, We Are . . .” Please continue to make the BBPA your organization of choice as we truly are the destination of excellence! We boast of a sound strategic direction and poise to deliver like never before! Come join us if you haven’t yet, and discover the residence of true excellence! Pauline Christian BBPA President April 30th, 2011 BIOGRAPHY OF Harry Jerome I t is no coincidence that the Awards are in memory of African Canadian Harry Jerome. One of the premiere track athletes of his time, Harry’s physical successes were partnered with scholastic excellence and social consciousness. Despite his relatively brief life, Harry left a substantial legacy and a blueprint for success. He was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1940 and in the 1950s his family moved to North Vancouver where they were the only Black people in their conservative neighbourhood. Harry went on to set the standard as the world’s fastest man, and represented Canada at two Pan American Games, two Commonwealth Games, and three Olympics. At the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia, Harry completely severing his left quadriceps muscle; most orthopaedic surgeons said that he would never run again. However, Harry concentrated on his return, and after months of physiotherapy and quiet determination, he achieved “the greatest comeback”. In 1964, Harry returned to track and field’s largest stage - the Tokyo Olympics. With a 30-centimetre scar on his left thigh, a testament to the severity of his injury, Harry would capture the bronze medal in the 100-metre dash and narrowly missed a second medal in the 200-metre Outside of athletics, he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in science at the University of Oregon and was always conscious of the challenges facing African Canadians. He obtained equipment for young athletes who could not afford the expensive gear, created opportunities for Blacks outside the sports arena, and was a vocal opponent of the misrepresentation of African Canadians in Canadian television and wage discrimination barriers against Blacks. After his retirement from active competition in 1968, Harry went on to work with the Federal Ministry of Sport. He was named British Columbia’s Athlete of the Century, and, in 1971, received the Order of Canada as a testament to his achievements. In 1982, Harry Jerome died suddenly at the age of 42. Harry Jerome took on the concerns of a community and a country, epitomizing excellence, determination, and dedication. He truly is a Canadian hero. The 29th Annual Harry Jerome Awards April 30th, 2011 A scholar, Olympic athlete and social advocate, Harry Jerome embodied the will to succeed despite all odds, and demonstrated a strong social conscience and commitment to community. Understanding the importance of academic achievement and the need to build important social skills, her Academy’s successful 5C formula of Commitment, Completion, Consistency, Confidence and Communication has helped her students achieve greatness both in and outside of the Academy. Jade goes far beyond her duties as company owner, Artistic Director, mentor, tutor and confidant. Her Academy also provides full and partial scholarships to those in financial need, and the innovative Assistant/Student Teacher programs she initiated provide her students with the opportunity to develop critical business and leadership skills. Jade began dancing, teaching and choreographing at the age of 14 when she created a dance team at her high school. Although Jade had no dance or teaching experience, she excelled at the art form and is now a leader in her genre. While balancing demands of her business and family life, Jade found time to earn a university degree in Governance, Law and Management while continuing her volunteer work, which includes serving as a board member of Dance Ontario, Chair of the Dance Ontario Youth Board and Director of Dance for Youth Day. It is the person who chooses to hold out their hand, take a chance on excellence, believe strongly that the young mind in front of them, is greater than they are even aware. For every person in our community who has made a difference, there was always someone who dared to believe they could. We are proud when we make history in our community. When we stand out not because of what we are, but because of who we are. Somewhere in this city, a little girl dreams of becoming a doctor. A little boy sketches drawings of big buildings he constructs in his mind, a child that sings when nobody is listening but allows her imagination to take her to a stage where she graciously takes a bow. These are the young people who need to take their dreams off the shelf and start reaching for the stars. Every donation that is given towards scholarships, gives yet another student the ability to stand out above the crowd, to excel at what they do best with the support of our community. To our scholarship recipients, we salute you. We raise our hands in applause and champion you on your road to success. The BBPA thanks you, the people, for all your love and support and continued generosity. From yearly scholarships to regular donations from community members who know each dollar is a contribution to pathing the way for one student to make a mark for us all. With your help, you help our youth excel. Thank you for supporting tomorrow’s leaders. By: Rachael-Lea Rickards Message from the Acting Chairs Dr. Miriam Rossi & Dr. Edith Guntley-Lorimer D edicated to supporting and promoting the achievement of academic excellence by Black Canadian youth through an annual scholarship program, the BBPA National Scholarship Fund began in 1986 with the granting of two scholarships totaling $3,000.00.
