for you or a friend to chip in.
A message
from the
President…
E
very year, more than 500 people dedicate what hours
they can to help ensure the traditions, values, facilities
and programs of our non-profit Millarville Racing &
Agricultural Society continue to play an important role
in their community.
They are volunteers . . . . . and without them, the programs
and events we've come to enjoy through the years and where
the next generation will be nurtured might not exist.
There are, of course, many reasons to become a volunteer;
the desire to help, to use one's knowledge for something
good, to live a new experience, to overcome challenges, to
acquire abilities, to keep old skills refreshed, to establish
social relationships or simply to contribute to the common
good. But once you begin, the joy of volunteering and the
sense of community you build within yourself will be more
than sufficient reason to keep you coming back.
Even though the definition of a volunteer is someone who
freely offers themselves to service without compensation,
the truth is volunteering does return to you a certain
contentment from the gradual realization that you've made
a difference in the life and texture of your community. It just
feels
good.
It can start with a call or e-mail to an Event chairperson or
someone you know in the event, or call the MRAS office at
403-932-3411.
We'd love to hear from you and help you give back to your
community and thank you again to all of those who
volunteer their time now. You're appreciated.

And yet, there is always more that is needed.
If you are volunteering for one event but feel you have more

might enjoy or benefit from volunteering at MRAS, be sure
to mention us to them and see if they'd like to be involved.
We do need volunteers for the Farmers’ Market, for the
Races, for the Rodeo, for the Fair, for the Christmas Market,
for help in the office, for help around the MRAS site. Let us

Get Your Entries In!
The Fair is Right Around the Corner…
T
he 104th Priddis & Millarville Fair is ready to go – hot behind
the heels of the 15th Annual Millarville Rodeo. Entries are
coming in fast and furious, and the entry deadline has been
extended until August 8th! So that gives you a few more days to
get your best work in.
Bench shows are ready to go. The livestock people are prepared for the action.
The Acreage Equipment Show is ready to demonstrate their wares. Fair
committee members are desperately trying to find out who is entering the
working farm truck competition – so they can point fingers at their neighbors.
Be prepared to coerce, annoy and/or bribe the judges to persuade them to
honor your choice. Kids World has wonderful things happening – jump tents,
petting zoo, craft corner, races, and lots more. The heavy horses are returning
with exciting happenings: ice cream making, wheel wright demonstration,
wagon-rides, petting team. The Bar U Percherons will be among our amazing
guests. Test your strength at the Calgary Stampede Incredi-Pull in Kids World.
Stampede Stage will again feature the Pet Show, Talent Show, and Rooster
Crowing, Winners Circle, live auction and the draw for Reggie. See the website
for the ongoing Reggie Contest. It is open until August 19. Wild Pink Yonder will
be visiting us. Join us in our support of breast cancer awareness and research.
WEAR PINK TO THE FAIR. Come and appreciate and thank all of our volunteers
who have worked so hard to make this event one you can enjoy.
Time flies and the wonderful, fun-filled 104th Annual Priddis & Millarville Fair,
happening August 20, is fast approaching, even faster if - we hope - you're planning your entries right now.
Attending one of the last, great Agricultural Fairs in Canada is only half the fun you can possibly have, with the other half
being putting your baking, rabbits, roosters, quilts, dressed-up horses or dogs, photography and all manner of other
crafts on the line in hopes of winning one of those lifetime treasures, a first, second or third place ribbon as well as an
accompanying cash prize.
"We have generations of families participating," says Fair Chairman Donna Kendall. "Grandmothers who are still trying
to win a ribbon in baking first started at the encouragement of their own grandmothers when they were kids. Making
sure the next generation is always involved and having fun is how we've continued on through more than a century."
There is a wide range of categories for kids of all ages at the Fair. To check out your possibilities and to find entry forms
and to enter on-line, the 2011 Fair Book is
available at various locations throughout the
Millarville, Black Diamond, Turner Valley and
Okotoks area (list below) as well as being
easily
accessible
at
www.millarvilleracetrack.com
and
www.priddismillarvillefair.com
Entry fees range from $1 to $7, putting those
valuable Fair ribbons within reach of anyone,
and categories kids and adults can enter
include Grasses, Grains & Hay, Vegetables &
Fresh Fruit, Flowers, Home Cooking, Fibre Arts,
Arts & Crafts, Photography and Woodworking while Livestock categories include Western Light Horse, English Light
Horse, Sheep and Domestic Birds.
The Fair is also featuring its Reggie The Rooster "Long Journey Home Contest" for art work and stories with details online at www.millarvilleracetrack.com and a separate entry deadline of August 19.
Aside from being accessible on-line, Fair Books are also available at the Millarville General Store, the Millarville Library,
the Turner Valley Library, the Royal Bank in Turner Valley, Vales in Black Diamond, Sanduls Pharmacy in Black Diamond,
the Husky station in Bragg Creek, the Priddis General Store, the Mill Store in Okotoks, the offices of the Millarville Racing
& Agricultural Society and the MRAS information booth and Fair table on Farmers Market days.
For more information, contact Donna Kendall at 403-931-3754 or e-mail [email protected]
Millarville Rodeo Going to the Dogs!
A
fter 14 years of shoveling snow off the infield or battling with thigh
deep mud we finally wised up and moved the Rodeo to August.
That’s right, folks. The 15th Annual Millarville Rodeo goes August 5,
6, and 7 at the Millarville Race Track.
This Foothills Cowboy Association Rodeo will feature everyone's favorite
wild
events
including
Bull
Riding,
Steer Wrestling, Saddle and Bareback Bronc Riding, Barrel Racing and
Calf
Roping,
Tie-Down
Roping,
Team
Roping
as well as the ever-popular Wild Horse Race. Be prepared to be on the
edge of your seat for one of the best rodeos in Alberta. You'll be sitting
so close you're going to feel the adrenaline rush as top cowboys and
cowgirls compete for top dollars.
Come early on the Saturday and take in the legendary Millarville Market
with its wide array of local produce, crafts and entertainment. Pick up
some western art or tack at the Rodeo Marketplace, recharge your
batteries. Stay late Saturday and two-step the night away at the Rodeo
Dance with the hot band Kixxen! You’re welcome to stay at the
Racetrack campground overnight for $20/night … first come, first served!
This year we’re also going to the dogs. Bert Davis, the Coppertown Clown and the Muttley crew are part of the act. Bert
is our Rodeo Clown, and the Muttley Crew are his partners in the half-time show. Bert’s been clownin’ around all his
life. As a little tyke he hung around the renowned Oakville, California rodeo till they finally let him try on the baggy
pants, put some of that make-up on his face… living and learning his dream. He’s worked with all kinds of animals…
goats, mules, llamas but decided back in 1995 that dogs were the best partners (and a whole lot easier to get across the
border!)
“We have ten four-legged kids and three four-legged grandkids,” says Bert proudly. They are all rescue dogs and from
old Angela (19) to little Kitty (her one-year old pup) they just love to perform. The whole family (Bert, his wife and the
dogs) travels throughout North America all rodeo season and this year they’ll be entertaining at the Millarville Rodeo.
The Wild Rose Trick Riders will also be performing at the rodeo, and crowds will be in awe by their death defying stunts,
and their trusted mounts that carry them safely.
The Rodeo runs Friday at 6:30 pm, Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 1pm ($12 Adults/ $6 Kids 6-12/ Five & under free)
The dance is 8pm Saturday ($12.00 in advance or $15.00 at the door) MRAS Members are Free! For more information call Hazel at
