OCTOBER 2016 ANNOUNCEMENT

2nd QUARTER 2017 ARRIVAL
HO MASTER HH600/660 Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hohh600d.htm
Between 1931 and 1940 ALCO built 177 high hood (HH) switching locomotives of various horsepower ratings and body
styles. The “HH” models were forerunners to the popular S-series of switchers which featured lower hoods. ALCO’s high
hood switchers were in production long before similar models from competitors EMC/EMD (1935) and Baldwin (1937).
Interestingly, the “HH” model designation is a term coined by rail historians to describe what ALCO documentation
had simply referred to as 600-hp or 660-hp switchers. In later years ALCO had referred to these early units as “high hood
switchers” so this designation is appropriate.
Of the 177 high hood switchers built, 104 were HH600s, 18 were HH660s, 21 were HH900s and 34 were HH1000s. Some of
the largest users of these models included New Haven, Lackawanna and New York Central. Various physical changes
occurred during the 9 years these locomotives were in production. The biggest change occurred in 1934 when ALCO
hired industrial designer Otto Kuhler to improve the appearance of their very boxy, utilitarian switchers. The post-1937
production units we are now offering featured many of his suggested improvements.
In 1938 ALCO introduced a line of high hood switchers powered by the new model 538 diesel engine which featured a
cast iron engine block. This engine was offered in both a 660-hp (non-turbocharged 538) and 1000-hp (turbocharged
538-T) switcher, each weighing approximately 196,000 pounds. The horsepower rating could be adjusted downward
slightly per customer specification by lowering the RPM of the diesel engine. Therefore, 600-hp and 900-hp models were
offered concurrently. The HH600 and HH660 locomotive models we are offering were produced from 1938 to 1940 and
were externally identical.

NOVEMBER 2016 ANNOUNCEMENT
I
2nd QUARTER 2017 ARRIVAL
HO MASTER Alco C424/425 Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hoc424c.htm
The ALCO C424 model was one of the first “Century-series” locomotives to be produced. Its 16-cylinder 251B-series
prime mover produced 2,400-hp, making it a direct competitor to the 2,500-hp GE U25B and EMD GP35 models. A total
of 190 units were built between 1963 and 1966 for customers throughout North America, including 53 for roads in the
US, 92 for Canada and 45 for Mexico. Erie Lackawanna, Canadian Pacific and National de Mexico purchased some
of the largest fleets in their respective countries.
By late 1964 ALCO had determined that an extra 100-hp did make a difference to some customers, and the 2,500-hp
C425 model was the result. Improvements over the C424 included a higher capacity main generator, a simplified electrical control system, increased radiator capacity and an upgraded 251C prime mover. The appearance of the body
was nearly identical to the C424, with one major exception being the addition of a bulge above the radiator intake
grille at the rear of the long hood. A total of 90 units were produced between late 1964 and 1966, all for US roads. The
largest purchases were made by Pennsylvania and Spokane Portland & Seattle.

2nd QUARTER 2017 ARRIVAL
HO MASTER GP40-2 Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hogp40-2e.htm
The GP40-2 was EMD’s follow-up to the very successful GP40 locomotive model. While many internal upgrades were
introduced (such as the use of improved, modular Dash 2 electrical components), there were some external differences between the early production GP40-2 and late-production GP40. This included an engine water-level sight glass
on the right side of the body (a feature common to all EMD Dash 2 models), a larger electrical cabinet air filter box, a
lengthened battery compartment on the left side, and a slightly modified cab.
All GP40-2s featured a 16-cylinder EMD 645-series diesel engine which was rated at 3,000 horsepower. Early to midproduction phase 2 GP40-2s were built from mid-1976 through late-1979. Several major spotting features of Phase 2 units
include: an 88” low nose, corrugated radiator grilles and notched step wells.

4th QUARTER 2016 ARRIVAL
HO TRAINMAN® Aluminum Coal Gondola
www.atlastrainman.com/HOFreight/tmhoalumcoalgon.htm
Transporting coal on the railways has been around as long as the railways. Two major types of cars emerged for hauling
coal; hoppers and gondolas. The earlier cars were made of wood, then steel, and later aluminum. The lighter weight
of aluminum allows greater lading and cubic foot capacities ideal for bulk minerals transport. By the 1980s, both coal
hoppers and coal gondolas were using aluminum bodies in their construction.
The Trainman® aluminum coal gondola model represents a typical Association of American Railroads car type code
J311, a gondola car with a load limit greater than 185,000 lbs, depressed bottom, and 36’ to 48’ interior length. Typical
of these cars is the rotary coupler usually signified by a contrasting colour on one or, both ends. The Trainman model
has thirteen side stakes and a double tub bottom. Gross Rail Loading is rated at 286,000 lbs.
FEATURES:
• True scale dimensions with accurate details
• Weighted underframes
• Equipped with AccuMate® Knuckle Couplers
• Trucks equipped with free-rolling wheels

HO TRAINMAN® Evans 52’ Gondola
www.atlastrainman.com/HOFreight/tmhoevgondola.htm
The work horse of the steel industry, the gondola is basically a flat car with sides, allowing more and different types of
loads to be transported. The gondola dates to about 1830 and was first used on early railways and tramways to move

railroad as the prototype did on the great rail lines of America.

HO MASTER EV & STandard CUPOLA Caboose
www.atlasrr.com/HOFreight/hoevcaboose7.htm
In a vast array of rail cars, the caboose is probably the most
recognizable and pleasing sight of a freight train. The purpose of the caboose was to house the crew at the rear of
the train to perform switching activities and spot any problems that could arise. As freight cars evolved, the need to
see over taller cars became mandatory. Developed in the
60s, the extended vision caboose solved these problems
with a cupola that raised up from the roof, providing the
crew an elevated view of their train.
Whether you want a caboose to keep your crew out of the
elements or you need a safe place for them to stand, Atlas’
Extended Vision Caboose captures both variants in spectacular detail.
FEATURES:
• Thin endrails
• Window glazing
• Separate brake cylinder
• Open smoke stack
• Triple valve and air reservoir
• Roller-bearing caboose trucks
• Roofwalk where appropriate
• Accurate painting and lettering

HO Trainman® PS-2 COVERED Hopper
www.atlastrainman.com/HOFreight/tmhops2.htm
Covered hoppers are a relatively new car family. The AAR considered these “special” cars until the 1980’s when they
finally got their own car type code category. These early covered hopper designs were built primarily for more efficient
cement loading and unloading (previously cement was bagged and placed in box cars). This two-bay covered hopper car design was built by Pullman-Standard starting in the late 1940s with production continuing into the 1950s. This
car features eight round roof hatches for quick loading. Two large gravity gates were used to discharge the commodity as quickly as possible. Capacity is rated at 2,003 cubic foot.
FEATURES:
• 50-ton friction bearing or 70-ton roller bearing trucks
(as appropriate by road name)
• Detailed brake gear

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) developed a standard design for 50-ton and 70-ton twin offset open
hopper cars starting in the late 1920s. The design was modified in the mid 1930s, and through 1960 over 127,000 cars
had been built to AAR specifications. Nearly all major car builders of the time constructed cars of this 33’ interior
length design, and some were even built at railroad home shops. Eastern coal carriers such as Chesapeake & Ohio,
Baltimore & Ohio and Louisville & Nashville each amassed the largest fleets. However, the twin offset hopper design
was not limited to coal service, with ore and aggregates also
