So much has transpired over the past
year. Sadly, two Directors stepped
down from the Board before their
terms of office were completed.
Dalvir Nahal, who joined our board
in October 2008, was elected a
Councillor for the City of Vernon in
the municipal election last November.
Elise Allan
I wish to recognize and thank Dalvir
President
for her significant contribution to the
VJH Foundation
Foundation and for her support of
excellence in health care in our community.
Nancy Serwo retired from Interior Health in December
2014. Nancy helped inform the Board about local health
care needs. We were always grateful for her insight and
candidness on future healthcare projects and equipment
needs. The VJH Administrator is an appointed position
on our Board of Directors, and we now welcome the new
Hospital Administrator, Richard Harding, to the Board.
In January 2015, the Board welcomed Marg Bailey as a
Director. She had previously been an active member of
the Personnel and Charity Classic Golf Committees.
Three years ago we rewrote our Mission statement to
better reflect the funding support we provide for health
care throughout the North Okanagan. Funds are raised
to support Community & Mental Health, Residential
Care and Vernon Jubilee Hospital. For years now the
Foundation has struggled to communicate the scope of
these supported areas without changing our name.
The name “Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation” is
recognized for a history of philanthropic activities
locally. The Public Relations Committee was tasked
with rebranding the Foundation to better reflect this
diversity. We are pleased to be launching a new logo for
the Foundation this fall. We have adopted a new logo
that downplays VJH and better reflects all of the health
care areas that we fund.
Over the past two years a strong team of individuals
has worked to raise the 2.5 million dollars committed to
complete the 6th and 7th floors of Polson Tower. I am
pleased to announce that we have reached our goal one
year ahead of schedule! I wish to thank Campaign CoChairs Dr. Chris Cunningham and Richard Finn for their
strong leadership and the committed campaign team,
Myrika Godard, Peter Hill, Gurjit Jhajj, Darryl O’Brian, On
Ouchs and Rob Tedham.
We have had a fruitful year and this could not have
happened without our dedicated Foundation staff and
Board of Directors. Together we have made a difference
in local healthcare.

The official opening of the Digital Mammography Unit took place April 24 at
VJH. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was attended by nearly 100 guests, many
of whom helped make the $428,400 campaign a success in bringing digital
diagnostic equipment to our hospital. VJH Foundation extends its sincerest
appreciation for the generous support received for the 2013 – 2014 Campaign.

Your donation to VJH Foundation helps fund new equipment, special projects & staff education for the hospital, and
Interior Health-managed residential care facilities, and community & mental health programs in the North Okanagan.
A Legacy of Caring
Keith Kennedy was a generous, caring man, who spent his life in service of others. His
friends remember him as an intelligent, well-read individual who loved nature and animals.
Throughout his 93 years, Keith and his wife Jean sponsored 17 children through World Vision,
as well as donated to the charity.
During World War II, Keith joined the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in the Air Force. He
was a member of the Vernon Seniors’ Association, the Vernon All Saints Anglican Church,
and a 35-year member of the Vernon Chapter of the Knights of Pythias, which funds many
charities and provides graduation bursaries throughout the North Okanagan.
Although Keith passed away in March 2014, his generosity lives on through a $10,000 bequest
to the Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters. They have chosen to honour his memory by
donating the funds to Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation. This generous gift will be allocated
to the Building a Tower of Care Campaign, Phase II, to name a Quiet Room in Polson Tower.
Keith Kennedy
“We wanted to do something that would have a big impact,” explains Pythias Knight, Tony
Kuhn. “The Quiet Room will be a benefit to those in the hospital who need to talk with
a doctor, their family, or a caregiver, or for
someone who needs to get away for a few
quiet minutes.”
The local chapter of the Knights of Pythias was established
in 1894. Their mission is based on Damon and Pythias, two
characters in Greek mythology, where each was willing to
sacrifice his life for the other, acknowledging the importance
of loyalty, honour and friendship. The Lodge has been
very active in the community, annually participating in the
Kalamalka Lake Canoe and Kayak Races in the 1970s.
The Pythian Sisters was established in Vernon in 1944, raising
funds through hosting bazaars and catering events. They are
pleased to be able to contribute to the community through
the Quiet Room at VJH. “I remember when my parents
passed away,” says member Patricia Kropp. “A quiet room is (left to right) Patricia Kropp, Edna Kuhn, Gay
like an oasis where you can get away. Sometimes you need Rutherford, Debbie Edmunds, Joanne Kineshanko
more space and a nice quiet place to go to.”
(VJHF Board), Bill Kropp, Fred Wernicke, Tony Kuhn
“We want to pass on our gratitude for the care our Dad received in surgery and all of the admitting and
nursing staff in the Polson Tower Surgery Ward. We are truly fortunate to have such a wonderful facility
with such capable staff serving the interior.”
– Anne Cooper, Revelstoke
“For three and a half weeks I watched these nurses without exception, perform their duties, many of them
very distasteful, cheerfully and willingly. Prior to my hospital stay, I had no idea what made up a work day in
the life of a nurse.”
- Margaret Normandeau, surgery patient 3rd Floor East and West wings
“I am truly thankful to all of the staff whose gentle care & concern were so important in my recovery during
my 52 day stay at VJH.”
– Jean McMullin
“The care and respect at VJH that we experienced was exceptional and unique.”
- Sharon Varette, Kelowna
“I recently spent a week in the post-operative ward at VJH. I was hugely impressed by the quality of care I
received. All of the nurses were attentive and helpful and they were always there when I needed them, even
though I had only received minor surgery. I am most grateful to them all.”

The Call for Caring
A $14,500 bequest from a retired Vernon Jubilee Hospital nurse will help boost the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation’s Tower of Care Campaign.
It was 1956 when a nurse from Denmark answered the call to alleviate the nursing shortage taking place in Canada. Ammy Thestrup Nielsen first arrived in Medicine Hat where she worked as
a registered nurse at Medicine Hat General Hospital for 10 years before moving to Calgary where
she nursed at Holy Cross Hospital.
Ammy Thestrup
Nielsen
In 1968 Ammy moved to Vernon where she worked in extended care at the newly-opened Alex-
ander Wing at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Her association with VJH would last nearly two decades and lead to a
legacy that would continue providing care for North Okanagan residents long into the future.
Rose Wilson met Ammy in the 1970s when Rose was working in the housekeeping department at VJH. They
established a close and long-lasting friendship. “There was a group of us. We spent Christmases together and
celebrated birthdays. Ammy always liked a glass of beer at the Squires Four,” says Rose.
“Ammy was a smart lady and a good nurse. When she came to Canada, she fully satisfied the Alberta and British Columbia requirements to nurse. “
Ammy retired in 1985. As her health began to deteriorate, Rose would take her to appointments and errands.
As Ammy’s eyesight worsened, she eventually had to move into Orchard Valley Retirement Residence.
“The staff at Orchard Valley was amazed at what she could do. She would walk to Polson Park every day, picking up the Morning Star at Safeway and delivering it to the residents. She was a determined person,” says Rose.
At the age of 91, Ammy developed inoperable cancer and passed away a year later in May 2013.
Ammy’s $14,500 bequest will be allocated towards one of the two Nourishment Centres that will be included
on the 6th and 7th floors of Polson Tower. The nourishment station will include a fridge, microwave, toaster,
sink, water dispenser and ice machine to provide patients and their families with any additional nutritional needs
during their stay at the hospital.
“I think she would be honoured to have this in her name,” says Marie Trentini, a former supervisor of Ammy’s at
VJH and executor of her estate. “Those things were important to her.”
“Over the past year, I have spent considerable time in our local Vernon Jubilee Hospital in the operating room
and in 3-West. We are so fortunate to have the medical staff they have in that hospital and on that particular
floor. The nurses are just super and so efficient. They certainly looked after me while I was there for several
days recovering from the surgery.”
- Dan Dally
“I recently spent seven days in the cardiac care unit at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. I am writing to let you and
Vernonites know what good care I received. The concern and compassion shown by all of the staff who
attended to my needs, from the nurses, doctors, and support staff such as respiratory, X-ray etc., was of
the finest. Their attention to detail and to making sure I was comfortable was wonderful…. You are a special
group.”
- Al Noakes
“It was with some trepidation that we made the decision to finally have (Dad) leave our home, where he had
been for a year, and make the permanent move to your facility (Pleasant Valley Manor). We should not have
worried. We witnessed staff going out of their way to help, with such compassion and diligence. Aside from
just doing their duty, we have noticed they always try and find the time to listen, to try and help, offering a
kind word or a caring pat on their arm. Each of you is faced with a formidable task each shift, yet you accept it
cheerfully and with great dedication. We are in awe, and offer our sincerest thanks and gratitude.”
– Family from Armstrong
“I must tell you that your staff (in the Mammography Unit) are amazing. I felt so at ease as soon as Marg met
me when I first walked in, and Debbie had an amazing approach to the test and the most comfortable process
of administering the test. They were personal, friendly, energetic and professional… I have never had a test so
relaxing and in such an amazing friendly environment. Thank you so much!”

A New Look!
Over the years, it hasn’t been an easy task to communicate the extensive scope
of funding and geographic locations supported by Vernon Jubilee Hospital
Foundation. The Foundation raises funds for more than 50 areas of care
throughout the North Okanagan including Interior Health-managed Residential
Care facilities, Community & Mental Health Programs and Vernon Jubilee
Hospital.
To meet the challenge, VJH Foundation has adopted a new logo to debut in
the fall of 2015, which continues to recognize the historical significance of the
Foundation, while more accurately reflecting the many health care needs it
funds.
Designed by Wayside, who donated half of the design costs, the new logo
places the focus on the ‘Foundation’ to highlight that it supports other muchneeded areas of health care in addition to Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The colour
blue symbolizes the professionalism, reliability, and stability of the Foundation.
The red colour reflects the Foundation’s passion to raise funds for current
and emerging local health care needs. Connecting the heart with the ‘F’ in
Foundation, characterizes the partnership that the Foundation shares with the
community and local health authorities in supporting health care for North
Okanagan residents.

VJH Foundation funds the most crucial health care needs; capital campaigns,
specialized equipment, staff education and residential care facilities and
programs in Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby and Lumby, which include seniors’
day programs, health-related support groups, and patient comforts. Examples
are the Lions Vision Centre in Armstrong, Granville Getaway Adult Day Program in Enderby, Public
Health programs in Lumby and Cherryville, as well as staff training in the Emergency Department at
VJH.
VJH Foundation funded a Snoezelen Room at Noric
House, featuring multi-sensory stimulation for dementia
patients through texture, sound, scents and lighting.
