The Legal Preliminaries
Notices of Marriage
Notices are declarations of your intent to marry. Whether
you are marrying in approved premises or the register
office, notices must be completed by each of you, in
person, in the registration district where you live.
You will also need to provide evidence of how any
previous marriage or civil partnership ended and if you
are aged under 18, parental consent will be required.
Notices of marriage are valid for 12 months and are
usually displayed for 28 days in your local register office.
If you change the venue, or notices expire, fresh notices
will have to be given.
After 28 days, your marriage authorities will be issued.
These are legal documents which are required by the
Registrar who is going to conduct your ceremony.
If you are resident in Cheshire West and Chester please
visit our website or telephone: 0300 123 7037 to make an
appointment to give notice. If you live outside our area,
you should contact your local register office.

to give notice. Usually these are:
• Evidence of identity, age and nationality – ideally a
passport.

38 The Place to Celebrate
How to become a Licensed
Additional Services
Approved Premises
In England and Wales civil marriages and civil partnership
ceremonies may only take place in a venue which has
been granted ‘approved premises’ status.
If you own or manage a venue and you would like to offer it
to the public as a ceremony venue, we can provide advice
on how to apply. The licence lasts for three years and can
include any number of suitable rooms.
More information and an application form can be found
on the Council’s website: cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/
registration, go to the ‘Become a Ceremony Venue’ link or
contact the Superintendent Registrar on
tel: 0300 123 7037.
In addition to the ceremonies detailed in this brochure
we also:
Conduct Civil Funerals
Our funeral celebrants can create and conduct
personalised civil funeral ceremonies.
Register Births and Deaths
Births and deaths that occur within Cheshire West and
Chester are recorded at our register offices.
Provide Copies of Registration Certificates
We can provide copies of original birth, death, marriage
and civil partnership certificates registered in the local
area since 1837 to the present date.
