According to pharmacist, author and lecturer Sherry Torkos, a potent tool
against weight gain is the Glycemic Index (GI).
The diet ranks carbohydrates based on how they affect blood sugar and
insulin levels. Foods that are broken down into sugar more slowly-fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, yogurt and dark chocolate-are low on the GI and
provide sustained energy. Foods that are rapidly broken down into blood
sugar-refined white flour products, baked and fried potatoes, white rice,
candy and soda-causing sudden blood sugar spikes, are high on the GI
and provide bursts of energy followed by periods of fatigue. Getting off this
blood sugar roller coaster can help you feel more energized, promote the
use of fat for energy, and decrease your appetite and food cravings.

(NAPSA)-There could be good news for all those who think they have a fat
chance of getting and staying slim: a surprising diet, exercise and nutritional supplements can help.
For long-term weight loss, Torkos adds, try these tips:
1.Avoid refined and processed foods. To satisfy a sweet craving, go for
fresh fruit or dark chocolate.
2.Add cinnamon to your cereal or coffee to improve the insulin action.
3.Include a lean protein and healthy fat in every meal-that also helps
lower the glycemic impact.
4.Eat small meals throughout the day.
5.Be aware of portion size.
6.Exercise regularly. Aim for 30 minutes to an hour a day of moderateintensity activity, such as walking, playing tennis, biking or dancing. Take
the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk or bike to your destinations.
7.Consider nutritional supplements backed by clinical studies.
• Phase 2, an extract of white kidney beans, improves glycemic control by reducing the digestion of starches. Total Lean Phase 2 Carb
Controller from GNC has been clinically studied and shown to decrease the caloric impact of carbs.
• Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a derivative of a fatty acid found
naturally in certain foods, such as meat and dairy. Supplements of
CLA are made from sunflower oil and can improve fat metabolism and
maintain or improve lean muscle mass.
• Fish oil supplements are good for heart health and emotional wellbeing. Omega-3 fatty acids can increase fat oxidation.
• Chromium can improve glucose tolerance by increasing insulin
sensitivity.

The menu is pages long and has
everything from omelettes and
salad to traditional chicken soup,
chopped liver and full dinners. Expect to take a lot home with you
since the portions are quite big.
The takeout display case has a
large array of cooked side dishes,

sweets at the front payout counter.
If you love gefilte fish like I do-it's
an acquired taste-you will have to
wait for the Jewish holidays in the
fall and the spring. Then, make it
a point to try some. But, you can
have the chopped liver anytime.

If you enjoy dancing or just listening to GREAT
MUSIC, then have I got an event for you! Elizabeth
Gorman, one of our long-time readers, who enjoys this
column, advises us about a note-worthy event. The
Single Parents Society Shore Chapter presents a Weekly
Dance Social each Tuesday at 7:30 PM til 10:30 PM at
the Social Hall of Somers Point Fire Co. #1 located at
Bethel Road in Somers Point, NJ. Refreshments will be
served. The group has been in Somers Point for over 30
years. Live music will be provided. A different musical
group will perform each week.
On May 14, 2013 enjoy the music of Tony
Deluca. On May 21, 2013 it's the music of Bud Cavallo.
On May 28, 2013 it's a Memorial Day Dance with a
Patriotic theme. Wear red, white and blue to say thank
you to our military forces. The group will enjoy special
snacks and will be dancing to the music of Star. The
cost for each event is $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers. The even is open to all ages. The public is
invited to attend. There will be some line dances and
a mixer, too. For further details, call the group's President Claire Quinn at (609)729-7070 or the group's Vice
President, Mary Ann D'Dangelo at (609)814-1142.

with you. Your lucky day this week will be Friday.

assistance. You must steer clear of overindulgent individuals. Your lucky
day this week will be Wednesday.

given by family or old reliable friends. Your need to use emotional
blackmail will only cause more conflict. A long, quiet walk alone may

Put your efforts into making constructive improvements to your
environment and to your state of mind. Entertainment should include the
whole family or a lot of your friends. Payoff all your debts before you go
out and celebrate. Your main concern will be to spend as little as possible
of your own cash in the process. Your lucky day this week will be
Sunday.
Your outgoing nature might work against you this week. Spending too
much time talking to friends or relatives could easily turn into a debate
that could lead to estrangement. This is not the best time to take a risk, to
gamble or spend money you really can't afford to part with. Use discrimination and play hard to get. Your lucky day this week will be Friday.

the band’s ethos. The singer had stumbled upon bullfighting pictures online and began reading
about the sport, appalled at its brutality. “It’s such a heartless sport and it’s so torturous for
these animals,” says Sam. “We got the idea of rooting for the bull instead. We root for the
underdog.”
5/24 - Caesars - Third Eye Blind: Led by Stephan Jenkins, 3EB won wide success during
a tumultuous group of years when the major-label recording industry was finally losing its grip
on an enterprise that for decades it had dominated with steely efficiency. Nothing could have
made 3EB happier! 3EB, however, have experienced no comparable loss. Instead, they have
gained artistic clarification -- and, surprisingly, a fan base larger than ever.
5/24 - Harrahs - Blues Traveler: Eighteen years after scoring the Grammy Award winning,
harmonica laced Billboard Top Ten breakthrough hit that came to define pop music in the
mid-90s, Blues Traveler are still finding unique ways to ensure that they don’t give their legion
of worldwide fans the “Run-Around.” On their instantly infectious, musically expansive 11th
PAGE 16
studio album and 429 Records/SLG debut, Suzie Cracks The Whip, they remain creatively
focused while dramatically expanding their musical horizons upon celebrating over 25 years
as a band.
5/24 - Borgata - Chicago: Chicago is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago,
Illinois. The self-described “rock and roll band with horns” began as a politically charged,
sometimes experimental, rock band and later moved to a predominantly softer sound,
generating several hit ballads. They had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and
1980s. Second only to The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and albums chart success among
American bands, Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups in
history.

One of SNL’s most talented alumni, comedian Dana Carvey reigned supreme during his
six-season run creating some of the show’s most memorable characters, including “Church
Lady”, “Garth” of Wayne & Garth fame, Grumpy Old Man and bodybuilding “Hans” of Hans &
Franz notoriety. Dennis Miller is a five-time Emmy award winner for his critically acclaimed

profound dry wit and likeable demeanor, Kevin Nealon has established himself as one of the
premiere television, theatrical and stand-up comedians of his generation. As a cast member

bass, drums, percussions, trombone, tuba, flugelhorn and trumpet. In an industry known
for constantly revolving doors of artists, McKnight has easily established himself with an
enviable record of chart consistency, has toured successfully for over a decade, and has
collaborated with performers across every genre including Quincy Jones, Justin Timberlake,
Mariah Carey, Diddy, Christina Aguilera, Rascal Flatts, Nelly, Vanessa Williams, Willie Nelson
and Kenny G.
5/25 - Trump Taj Mahal - Mötley Crüe: After Three Decades Of Decadence, Rockers
Continue To Influence, Inspire New Generations. Perhaps the most momentous accomplishment of Mötley Crüe’s rock n’roll legacy is the fact that its original members have survived to
tell their tale—while remaining as active and
relevant today as bands half their age, many
of whom validated their own mojo from the
original bad boys of rock. After what would
be more than a complete lifetime for most, the
band who described their exploits in their NY
Times best selling, rock and roll autobiography
defining The Dirt, the band is as relevant as
ever, releasing hit records, a new Grammy
nomination, record setting tours and new fans
discovering them through the cutting edge
bands they take on tour, their active internet
presence and the timelessness of the songs.

action-adventure-comedy Men In Black 3. To complement his global success as an recording
artist, Pitbull will be featured in the 20th Century Fox Animated movie EPIC as Bufo which
hits theaters May 24th. Ke$ha has taken the world by storm since the release of her debut
album Animal in 2010. That year she was declared Billboard’s Hot 100 Artist and her smash
debut single “TiK ToK” was named Billboard’s #1 Hot 100 Song, was the most played song
of that year, and was the biggest-selling digital track in the world. Ke$ha has toured the
world, playing over 200 live shows in support of Animal and its companion album Cannibal.
She took home the MTV EMA for Best New Act in November 2010 and was nominated for 2
American Music Awards, 3 MTV VMA Awards and 6 Billboard Awards.
5/25&26 - Caesars - Mary J. Blige: With a track record of eight multi-platinum albums,
nine Grammy Awards (plus a staggering 29 nominations) and four American Music Awards,
Blige is only getting started. The singer returns just as fierce and compelling on her 10th
studio album, the aptly titled “My Life II … The Journey Continues (Act 1).” Released via
Blige’s Geffen/Interscope-distributed Matriarch label, the new project doubles as the sequel
to Blige’s 1994 classic My Life.

Growing Bones Need Vitamin D
Millie's
Jewelry
Store Wide Sale
Vitamin D is essential to the body's ability to build and
maintain healthy muscles and bones.
(NAPSA)-Children need vitamin D for strong bones and muscles. While some
can be found in food, the nutrient is mostly made by your body when your skin
is exposed to sunlight. A vitamin D deficiency can hurt a child's musculoskeletal
system, according to the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative.
"A vitamin D deficiency in growing children can keep their bones from growing straight or it can make bones too weak to support a child's body weight,
resulting in broken bones," explained Ellen Raney, M.D., of Shriners Hospitals
for Children-Portland.
Symptoms
Severe vitamin D deficiency is becoming prevalent, however. Signs include
growth that's severely stunted, arms and legs that don't grow straight, and
bones that are weak and easily broken.

Why It Happens
There are a number of reasons:
• Decreased outdoor activities
• Constant use of sunscreen while outside
• Limited availability of vitamin D-rich foods. It's found in fish such
as salmon and in cod liver oil and fortified foods such as milk,
breakfast cereals and some brands of juice, yogurt or margarine.
You want to look for foods with a Daily Value (DV) of 20 percent or
more. A good diet is important but it may not be enough.
What To Do
To help, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a daily intake of 400
IU a day of vitamin D during the first year of life beginning in the first few days of
life. The Institute of Medicine says children and adolescents need a daily intake
of at least 600 IU per day. Your doctor can determine the correct amount of
vitamin D for your children and what, if any, changes to make to their diet.
Fortunately, vitamin D is readily available by itself in child-friendly forms, such
as gummy vitamins or liquid and in children's multivitamins with 60 to 400 IU
of vitamin D. Just remember, taking several multivitamins a day to get more
vitamin D is not wise, as too much of other vitamins can be harmful.
Help a Child You Know
Children with musculoskeletal problems can get help at Shriners Hospitals for
Children. They change lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty
care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. The nonprofit
organization's 22 facilities in North_America provide advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and
palate.
To refer a patient to Shriners Hospitals for Children, call (800) 237-5055. You
can also e-mail [email protected] to get a referral started.

1. Cook at home more often . Preparing more from scratch will eliminate preservatives
which will drastically cut back the sodium.
2. Compare the sodium content in food products. Try to stay under 300 mg sodium in
any given labels
3. Eat more fruits and veggies. Pile them high on
your plate to fill on more natural foods.
4. Watch the meat dishes. Processed, cured
meats are naturally high in sodium.
5. Check out the restaurant website.
Before you dine out make your decision.
Check on the sodium levels on the menu
before you sit down and make a quick decision.
6. Switch over to whole food snacks.
Processed cookies, desserts, and snack foods
add unnecessary sodium to your daily diet.
7. Consider portion size. Every time you
eat twice the amount serving size your
doubling your sodium intake.
8. Cut back on condiments. From
marinades and salad dressings to
ketchup and soy sauce, keep and eye
on how much sodium you slather from
jars and bottled sauces

The casinos are in the business of winning your money, all while offering
you a good time, of course. You do have options. Primarily, there are two
games in a casino whereby you can use your “noodle” and win consistently against the house. One is blackjack, a game where skill can definitely give you an advantage over the house. The other, requiring lesser
skills, is video poker. Video poker has a greater percentage payback to
the customers than other slots do. If you shop for the right video poker
game in the right casino, you can do very well, indeed. Furthermore, you
can have a lot of fun doing so. Please note that another casino game, live
poker, whereby the player competes against other table players instead
of the house can also reward skilled players.
Opportunities abound. An educated consumer can reap great rewards
in a casino. For example, local casino customers in Las Vegas are very
sophisticated compared to visitors from out-of-town. The Las Vegas
Strip resorts catering to tourists have video poker on only about twenty
percent, or less, of their casino floor. Conversely, local casinos off of the
“Strip” frequented by more knowledgeable locals, many who work in the
industry, are oftentimes eighty percent, or more, video poker. This tells
you something!
The Wizard Sez: “Remember the basics and frequent casinos which
offer you the best promotional give-a-ways and the best odds.
Good luck. God Bless America.”
The “Wiz” can be contacted at: [email protected]
Editor's Note: The opinions of the Wizard are not the opinions of this publication.

This column will present the “Wiz’s” valued readers with the important
basics concerning casino gaming opportunities in Atlantic City. Since the
first legalized casino opened in 1978 companies have invested about
$10 billion in adult entertainment facilities in Atlantic City. If you choose
to avail yourself of these wonderful leisure opportunities you will be
well-advised to heed the sage consumer-orientated advice of the “Wiz”.
His subsequent columns will contain tutorials on how to best take advantage of favorable casino gaming circumstances and gain a fighting chance
for success.
