Volume 4, Issue No. 1 January 31, 2009 ANNUAL REPORT PRESIDENT’S REPORT Isabelo P. Africa First things first Considering the troubles the world is in, perhaps foremost in the minds of members is the financial condition of the Foundation, so let me address that immediately. I am happy to report that the Foundation’s finances are in the pink of health. Admittedly, the total fund balance as of December 31, 2008 decreased by P396k compared to its level at the start of the year. This was mainly due to our disbursing P681k for the repair of 2 comfort rooms in the girl’s main dorm and the renovation of two guest rooms. Only the earnings, accumulated over the years from the Del Rosario Infrastructure Fund, were spent; thus, the capital fund remains intact. Said decrease is just a case of the timing of the disbursement and not a weakness of the finances. As a matter of fact, the other funds grew close to P300k during the year. The Foundation’s financial strength is further shown by the fact that the disbursements for the main programs (godparent and faculty assistance) increased by 18% and for training, seminars and competitions by more than double, from P123k to P308k. Despite the foregoing, it is still more prudent for the Foundation to be conservative in its actions until the full impact of the financial crisis is known. Continued in p. 2 PSHS Foundation Bags a Kyra for “ARUGA” “ARUGA” Handog ng Sining sa Agham, the fund raising art exhibit and mini concerts, in 2007 featuring the watercolors of Joven Ignacio, with Myra Picart ’08 as guest artist, won the Best Special Event Award in the 3rd Kyra Awards presented by Venture for Fund Raising. The Kyra Awards, are the first awards given among non-profit organizations in the Philippines to honor the best practices in fund raising campaigns. It is intended to acknowledge the successes of creative resource development and to celebrate partnerships between the profit and nonprofit sectors. The 4 categories of the awards are The Kyra “Reconnect” Award of Excellence in Fund Raising; “PhilPost” Best Direct Mail Campaign Award; The Best Special Event Award and “Shell” Best NPO-Corporate Partnership Campaign Award. The Best Special Event Award recognizes creativity in event planning and execution, meeting of fund raising objectives and fund raising effectiveness and return on investment. The “ARUGA” won over the other nominees: Asia America Initiative, Inc.: “Play for Peace” (Battle of the Bands Competition); My Shelter Foundation: Millennium Schools International Design Competition; SOS Children’s Villages Philippines: “20 Years of Unconditional Love:” SOS Manila Dinner for a Cause; and SOS Children’s Villages Philippines: SOS Davao Pasko Fiesta 3 in 1 Celebration: “Ilaw Mo, Buhay Ko…Share a Meal, Win a Wheel” (Tri-celebration: Barbeque Fiesta, Light a Tree, Raffle Draw). PSHS Foundation, Inc. ANNUAL REPORT. President’s Report, continued from page 1 Key result area What’s critical to the Foundation’s continued good financial standing is its performance in fund raising. One could not over-emphasize this fact. Our strategy is to work for the cooperation between the various stakeholders with the ultimate objective of rationalizing fund raising activities. We’ve had some successes in terms of the NG. So far, the NG has turned over more than P300k to the Foundation. The amount is taken up as a “safe keep” pending formal turnover and, therefore, not included among the revenues. The NG has been very active in presenting their program as well as that of the Foundation to various groups including the League of Corporate Foundations. This has resulted in favorable actions from the Metrobank and a senator. These should have made the life of everyone easy for the next few years except that fate decided to put in additional complications to challenge us. This will be discussed further in the next section. What’s important is that NG is spreading the word about our programs. This will help a lot in future fund raising drives. We also cooperated, albeit on a more personal basis, with the AA in the golf tournament. What I realize is the need for more activities to make both sides comfortable working together. Also important are the systems and procedures that we are developing for the fund raising activities. Progress in this area has been modest since our consultant Mrs. Quebral has been busy lately. We hope we can improve on our speed this year. A Senator’s donation This is an interesting puzzle the solution of which means additional millions for the Foundation. If anybody out there knows the solution we would highly appreciate if you could share this with us. Here’s the situation. The NG was able to convince a senator (we will not mention his name in the meantime that we are solving the case) to allocate a good number of millions from his budget to NG’s projects. The amount was, thus, included in the government’s budget as approved by both the Congress and the Senate. The amount was included in the budget of PSHSDiliman since only government institutions are allowed to disburse the same. And, in the absence of more specific instructions from the senator, the amount was allocated for operating expenses. We have not been able to withdraw any amount so far for the listed NG programs. Fund withdrawals are page 2 harder since they are subject to a lot of restrictions and are made even subject to availability of funds. And, even if we could withdraw, then we have to spend the amount since it is for operations. Thus, we could not really grow our capital funds from this source. The senators and congressmen are good sources of donations if we could solve the foregoing. Help!!! Expansion The Foundation’s depth of involvement has been increasing. This was the direction from last year for the Godparent Program. To rationalize our approach a Needs Analysis was undertaken by the committee headed by Vince Leung. The most serious concern cited was ‘academic overload’. Among the recommendations approved by the Board are : a) organizing time management or similar workshops; b) drafting a primer for parents on “The Responsibilities of Scholars’ Parents”; and c) preparing a primer, together with the Student Alliance, on “How to Survive Pisay”. In addition, the Foundation has somehow become more involved in the more personal problems of the godchildren. Like in the case of godchild Jayson Fruto who had problems coping with the death of both his parents. Another godchild, whose psychological problem was affecting his academic performance, is now in good standing and has passed the UPCAT. In these cases, through informal counseling and paternal concern, Mel Gadi is in the forefront. We have also been asked to support the scholars who compete. We find that for our students to perform optimally in competitions they would need to train and be coached more. This is the practice in most schools, so if our scholars don’t, they will be at a big disadvantage. Our disbursements for training and seminars have more than doubled, as earlier mentioned, because of this. But what has been so far done is still a long way off from what it should be. We are severely limited by the availability of funds. We supported more teachers in attending more seminars and training programs this year. Further improvements in the programs for the faculty should be forthcoming with the NG on board. So what’s lagging behind are the infra projects. Our dream for a completed and, hopefully, modernized gym is still in the far future. Acknowledgments Celi Nobleza has retired effective January 1, 2009. She has served the Foundation for 23 years. Thank you, Celi, for your invaluable contribution to the Foundation. Good luck on your next endeavor. PSHS Foundation, Inc. ANNUAL REPORT. page 3 GODPARENT PROGRAM A Godchild’s Appreciation “I would also like to thank the parents, alumni and volunteers who out of the goodness of their hearts are willing to share a part of themselves to students who need most.” Karmina BECOMING A GODPARENT Mrs. Maritz Montejo The Godparent Program of Philippine Science High School was first introduced to me in the latter part of 2006. Kiko, our youngest son just finished college at Ateneo, but pursued a second degree in UP college of engineering. At that time, our daughters Katrina and Camille are already helping out in the family business. We were starting all over again after being technically bankrupt in 2005. But God is good. He allowed us to go bankrupt when all the children are out of college. Karmina, leftmost, with some of our godchildren THANK YOU! Karmina Aquino I honestly don’t want to write this essay. Do you know why? It is because I am going to write something that will say one of the most difficult things to say on Earth—goodbye. But I realized that I can turn this essay into something which I would love to write or I can say, I would oblige myself to write—a ‘thank you’ one. And so, off Kiko went to UP. There he met new friends including his special friend Karen Lorenzana. His eyes were opened to the world, the real world, wherein not everybody drives a car, but rides the IKOT ,TOKI or walks to their classroom. His classmates and some friends would have banana cue or tokneneng or isaw for lunch or merienda (Kiko loves them all with gusto}, not the usual McDonalds and Starbucks in the nearby campus. Anyway, he felt for his friends and I asked him if there is someone we could help since we are already making good in our business. There was an outpouring of blessings at that time, so I wanted to share them with others because, we know how it is to have nothing, and we’ve been there too. I look back four years ago, when it was my first year here in Pisay. I see myself as someone who is afraid. Knowing that I have limitations, I was afraid that I will not be able to succeed and achieve my goals. Knowing that most of my other batchmates have something which I do not have, I was afraid that I will not be able to meet the expectations that this institution has for me. I was afraid that I will not be able to give my best, to live this life given to me to the fullest. This is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program focused primarily on education and youth development. The objective is to return the gratitude to our loyal customers for making us today’s dominant biscuit company in the Philippines. Most of these customers are students who never cease to include Rebisco products in their choice of healthy snacks. The company owes a great deal of its success to them! As a means of giving back, Rebisco is currently sponsoring 5 financially challenged but intelligent and highly deserving freshmen of Philippine Science High School. We are certain that these students will be the future leaders and vital citizens of the country. As such, it is a privilege rather than responsibility for the company to have a little contribution in realizing their dreams and ambitions. Like a real godparent, the company will be very proud to see them successful in their field of endeavor. To Jane, Luddhovik, Ferdinand, Nicoleson and Kirstene: the entire Rebisco family will continue to cheer you on and will pray for your success! The godchildren perform for their godparents A Godchild’s Appreciation, continued from p 3 But now, as I examine myself today, after four beautiful years, I am no longer the same me—I was transformed. I am no longer afraid but contented and happy. Many things have happened in my life. I faced many trials and obstacles that I fought and won. And I know that if I were alone, things could have happened in a different way. Maybe, I would still be afraid of the world. I would really like to take this opportunity to thank the PSHS foundation, - one of the reasons why I am what I am today. I would also like to thank the parents, alumni and volunteers who out of the goodness of their hearts are willing to share a part of themselves to students who need most. Their soft-heartedness served as an inspiration to me and to my co-godchildren to study harder and hold on to our dreams. As an officer, it is my honor to serve and help this foundation fulfill its missions. And although my time here has already passed, I know I will always be here because I will leave my heart here forever. I know there will come a time that I will be able to give back everything and even more o this foundation that helped me in my struggles here in Pisay and helped shape me into what I am today. PSHS Foundation, Inc. ANNUAL REPORT. page 6 FACULTY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM . THE PSHSFI TEACHING CHAIR AWARD AND ITS INFLUENCE ON PSHS FACULTY The Philippine Science High School sets a very high standard when it comes to hiring its faculty members. The applicants have to go through a tedious process: application letters and resume submitted are carefully scrutinized; a qualifying exam is administered; demo teaching is done with teachers as students; and, a panel of interviewers composed of highly specialized teachers on specific fields makes the applicants more traumatized than encouraged to teach in this school. After passing these steps, background investigations on those who qualified are also conducted. In other words, teachers at the PSHS are no ordinary teachers. They are supposed to be the best and most qualified teachers to teach the highly gifted students of PSHS. The questions are: Are they well compensated especially when they become permanent teachers? How does the PSHS keep its teachers when there are many attractive offers that are usually given to them here and abroad? How does it augment their income when the teaching job here requires hard work, dedication, commitment, and more time to be able to fulfill their responsibilities to their students? well to be able to get outstanding, very satisfactory and satisfactory citations at the end of the school year. Second, the monetary reward given to the teachers on the succeeding year helps augment the teacher’s income. Third, the thought that the PSHSFI cares that much about the teachers’ welfare is sufficient enough to make the teachers feel that their efforts, sacrifices, and commitment to stay in the PSHS are well founded. Teachers at the PSHS are not materialistic. They appreciate the effort of the PSHSFI to maintain the high standard of performance of the teachers by giving them the challenge to be outstanding in their fields of specialization. The monetary reward is not their priority need: the fact that their effort to be the best in their fields is highly appreciated matters most. The teachers who have been benefitting from this venture of the PSHSFI might not express their gratitude verbally or obviously, but deep in their hearts, they appreciate very much what they are receiving. Their gratitude is manifested by meeting the challenge that the PSHSFI is giving them, that of exerting extra effort to become outstanding teachers in their fields of specialization. To the PSHSFI, thank you so much, and MABUHAY!!! HERMINIGILDA C. SALAC Most of the permanent teachers who stay in PSHS have benefitted from the so-called PSHSFI Teaching Chair Award.
