A FLOWER FOR A FLOWER
BY DIANA GARCIA, STUDENT ASLA
The smell of sweet roses
and the endless amounts
of chocolate hearts are
filling the air with red heart
bubbles. Yes, Valentine’s
Day is upon us , or as those
who are not fans of the love
holiday call it, Single
Awareness Day. As females,
whether we love or hate
this holiday, we probably
love the thought of
receiving roses or tulips or
any kind of living plant from
a significant other or friend.
I’m not much a rose girl, but
if someone (hint hint,
boyfriend if you’re reading
this) were to give me tulips
or a nice bushel of long
sunflowers, I will definitely
know you have been paying
attention to my random
plant rants. So if you have
a significant other that isn’t
a fan of roses, I will help you
out by giving you the most
romantic plants and their
meanings so that your
special person can know
how much they mean to
you.

It’s that time of year to love or loathe the
middle of February. A month filled with
hearts, candy and anti-valentine parties.
Some people love to participate in the
festivities while others cannot stand the
thought of having to partake in another
commercialized holiday. Ruminating
about the holiday got me thinking about
NVASLA membership involvement. Do
you love to participate or are you a silent
partner?
I’m delighted to see NVASLA membership
numbers are up from the past few years,
however discouraged, at the same time,
that volunteering with the chapter seems
to be stagnant. Like presidents before
me, I worry about how to ignite a spark
of participation and invigorate our
membership to join in on the fun. My
own worst critic has consumed my time
with thinking about how I can help make
our chapter more enjoyable so that people
will want to attend events and hang out
with colleagues to promote our profession.
I don’t have the answers, but I know
several people that do. Luckily our
chapter is full of extremely creative
people. Much like a great project, our
chapter needs your input in order to
succeed. What do you love about NVASLA
or what could our chapter improve upon?
NVASLA is working hard this month to
gather input from you so we can shape
our chapter into an organization that you
want to be part of.
How might you unleash your ideas and
suggestions? Look in your email inbox
to partake in our chapter survey. It’s an
anonymous, 10-question survey that you
can make as quick or lengthy as you wish.
That’s not all, folks. Along with a few of
your Excom members, I will be providing a
chapter update at the February NVASLA
lunch. Please plan on attending this open
forum discussion about where the chapter
stands and what direction we are heading.
So peers, I am verbally twisting your arm
to provide your opinions about NVASLA.
Our chapter is only as great as its member’s
ideas and hard work. Truth be told, I’m
worried that no one will complete a survey
or show up to the monthly meeting. So
please prove my fears wrong, show your
support to NVASLA and provide the needed
input to improve our chapter.
Have a great month and please share your
love or loathing for NVASLA. If the options
mentioned above are not your participation
style, please feel free to contact any of the
Excom members or myself to express your
ideas.
JANUARY SPEAKER: TANNER CHEE, MIRELLA GARCIA, ARELY LOPEZ, AND CORY
BY CARRIE BECKER, ASLA
It was a pleasure to hear about the National
ASLA conference and its host city, Denver,
through the eyes of our local UNLV landscape
architecture students. It became clear quite
quickly that Arely Lopez, Cory May, Mirella
Garcia, and Tanner Chee took full advantage
of the Denver area and all it had to offer.
They led us on a photo tour (including a few
selfies!) of their journey. They stayed at a
LEED certified hotel where they were
surrounded by beautiful architecture inside
and out, along with a xeriscape water
filtration system that had been constructed
out front.
The students enjoyed exploring Denver,
including the University of Colorado Denver
campus, which was right next door to their
hotel. They were able to see successful
examples of old architecture abutting new,
along with the design of functional, yet
artistic elements such as amphitheaters and
bike racks. A quick hop onto Denver’s
extensive public transportation system and
they were able to visit the Denver Zoo,
Botanical Gardens, Union Station, and the
16th street mall.

Luncheon attendees didn’t
see a lot of photos from the
conference because
photography was not allowed.
However, we did see the
passion and excitement the
students came back with after
attending the educational
sessions. Their favorite
moments included meeting
John Gidding from the
television show Curb Appeal,
and getting autographs from
Landscape Architect James
Corner. We even received a
mini educational session of
our own, when Tanner talked
about his favorite session on
therapeutic landscapes. The
students all shared the same for the scholarship opportunity
sentiment that what they learned to attend the National ASLA
will help them with their capstone conference.
projects this semester.
The students conveyed multiple
times they loved the “feel” of
Denver’s downtown. From the
cool architecture to urban spaces
and functional art, they enjoyed
seeing places they had previously
only read about. Their favorite
parts of the trip included the
interactive art pieces, meeting
their idols, and Denver ’s
transportation system. Arely, Cory,
Mirella, and Tanner gave a fantastic
presentation at the luncheon and
gave many thanks to the chapter

APPLICATION EFFICIENCY VS. WIND SPEED
AND WE PROVED IT.
You need nozzles that perform in the real world—not just in zero-wind buildings. So Rain Bird partnered with the
University of Arizona to measure application efficiency in windy conditions. Other nozzles missed the mark in windy
conditions, with more water that was pushed outside the zone area. But Rain Bird nozzles produced heavier droplets
that hit the target area with much greater efficiency as the wind speeds climbed.
