greens, and other materials to use in the candleholders. Materials fee per person includes 2 inserts, 2
candle stabilizers, 2 oasis and boxwood tips - $15.00 per person, plus the regular program club fee of
$50.
NEW - Burroughs Audubon Nature Club Tour
The Burroughs Audubon Nature Club (BANC) is an organization dedicated to promoting the natural
sciences, ecology and conservation. Your club may visit and hold a meeting at our 30-acre nature
sanctuary. Trails and the Irondequoit Creek meander through a variety of habitats. Birds and
wildflowers abound. The sanctuary and clubhouse are located between the villages of Pittsford and
Victor. Fee: $50.00.

Braddock Bay Bird Observatory is a non-profit organization dedicated to ornithological research,
education and conservation. BBBO is operated entirely by volunteers, with the financial support of
members. Their primary research and education facility, the Kaiser-Manitou Beach Banding Station,
is located on the south shore of Lake Ontario northwest of Rochester, NY. Braddock Bay Bird
Observatory is always happy to give tours and programs during the spring and fall season.

In 1972, Elaine first learned about the mysterious Monarch Butterfly. Twenty years later, she traveled
to the overwintering site of the eastern Monarch population in the Sierra Mountains, Mexico. Elaine
raises and tags Monarch Butterflies each year. She also acts as a resource for others who are raising
Monarch and other beneficial insects. She supports wildlife through her gardening.

Corsage Workshop or Boutonniere Workshop - Learn to make corsages or boutonnieres as
a 'thank-you' for volunteer recognition. The boutonniere workshop lasts about 60 minutes.
The corsage workshop will take a little longer. Each club is to provide the desired flowers and
foliage for each participating member. Bring clippers, scissors & wire cutters. Fee: $30. Fee

The Genesee County Master Gardeners has a speakers bureau. Master Gardeners will present
programs to Garden Clubs. Programs are generally about an hour long although they have some
longer or shorter. They generally speak within Genesee County. The cost is $50 for a speaker

Ellwanger Garden is a “living museum.” Originally the private garden of famed 19th-century
horticulturist George Ellwanger, it was cultivated by the Ellwanger family from 1867 to 1982. The

Unusual Perennials - Michael Hannen is a grower of rare and unusual perennials. He collects them

This enjoyable and informative program is about the importance of the Montezuma Audubon Center
(MAC). It focuses on the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, one of the largest conservation projects in
the nation for reclamation of wetland habitat. This land is a crucial migration stopover in the
northeast for waterfowl, especially for threatened and endangered species. Programs can also include
gardening for the birds and bees.
The Montezuma Audubon Center is a state-owned facility operated through a cooperative agreement
between the NYS DEC and the Audubon Society. The MAC houses a large exhibit area, classroom,
nature store, office area, auditorium, and a meeting room. On its 198 acres, there are five types of
habitats, two restored freshwater marshes, two miles of hiking trails, and an all-access observation
platform. The MAC leads many educational programs.

Institute for Environmental Learning: Birds of Prey – This 45 minute to 1 hour program will
include some birds of prey and bio-artifacts for participants to study in the hand. The presentation
covers the natural history and ecology of these birds, their importance in the environment, the
benefits of certain birds in the garden and backyard, plus ways to attract them. The birds range in size

African Violet Care – The Springers will discuss different types of African violets,
hybridizers, soils, watering, fertilizers, lighting, temperatures, demonstrations and
more. Also demonstrated will be propagation. Club members will take part in this and receive a
leaf cutting and a free starter plant! Different size pots will be provided along with soil mixes
and notes to take home. Charts will be available for visual instruction.

Enjoy numerous well-tended gardens and a delightful pond located at their home on just over a half
acre. Their gardens consist of rare and unusual plants, conifers, ornamental grasses, hostas, daylilies,

Flower shows are an historic part of garden club activities. However, sometimes shows seem
intimidating. This needn’t be. Judges Council is a group of trained, dedicated club members who wish
to share their love of showing beautiful well-grown flowers and interesting horticultural items. Council
members are willing to assist your club organize and run an enjoyable and creative small or standard
flower show or a Flower Show In A Box.
Council members are trained to do judging in a kindly manner. The Council Chair can also schedule a
mentor to give your club a design critique program to show you what to look for in a well-designed
arrangement. This service is free, but reimbursement for gas and mileage would be appreciated.

DESIGN WORKSHOPS
All workshops consist of three lessons of three hours each. Cost is $35/person per workshop. All
workshops should have no more than twelve students maximum. Dates, times and location for each
workshop will be announced when finalized. For inquiries or further information, contact Pat Myers.
BEGINNING DESIGN - Arrangements for dates, times and location for this workshop should be
made with the club's Section Chairman. Students may be from one club or a combination of others.
Each lesson is three hours in length. (*Students will be given a list of plant materials in advance to
bring for Lesson I.)
Lesson I will include a discussion of the elements and principles of design, mechanics and
containers, selecting and conditioning materials, and illustrations of line and line mass designs.
Students then will complete their own line design using a provided container and oasis, and
*using plant materials they have been asked to bring. They will receive assistance from the
instructors, with constructive analysis when completed. Each student will bring a completed
mass line design to Lesson II.
Lesson II will be a review of the elements and principles of design. Instructors will demonstrate
asymmetrical designs, miniature and small designs and an example of mass centerpiece (to be
the next assignment for Lesson III). Students will then present their mass line design for
analysis, followed by making in class an asymmetrical design *with materials which they were
asked to bring. Assignment for Lesson III is student’s choice of bringing a completed small or
miniature design.
Lesson III Students bring completed small or miniature arrangement for constructive analysis.
Then, each student will construct in class a mass centerpiece. A certificate will be given to each
student upon completing the course, a requirement for attending any of the following
workshops.
INTERMEDIATE DESIGN - Must have completed beginners course.
Contents: Designs with weathered wood, use of fruits and vegetables, parallel designs, bases and
underlays, backboards & their support, creative containers, & use of color.
ADVANCED DESIGN - Must have completed beginners and intermediate courses. Contents:
Designs of 6-7 specific creative designs selected from the HANDBOOK FOR FLOWER SHOWS,
TABLES - Must have completed beginners course. In each session, the instructors
will first present an example, with students then completing their own design with materials which
they have been requested to bring, followed by constructive analysis from the instructors.
Lesson I: an overview by instructor of all types of tables, both traditional or creative,
components, themes and conformance. Illustration of tray settings; also illustration of
backgrounds and background techniques.
Lesson II: exhibition tables with backgrounds; illustration of functional buffet, reception and
semi-formal tables. Class III. Student completes their own functional table. Discussion of
importance of creativity and distinction.
