Welcome to the 2013 winter edition of aDm,
Why not boost your circulation in the colder months by engaging in some energetic dance activity, whether
it is taking a class or going out to see one of the great shows on offer.
The Australian Ballet’s Swan Lake choreographed by Stephen Baynes is proving so popular that the
company has added an extra mid-week matinee performance on Wednesday 10 July - great seats are still
available!
Ballet Revolucion brings irresistible Cuban dance moves to Her Majesty’s Theatre in Grote Street from
23-27 July. A brilliant combination of powerful street dance and ballet, performed to the infectious rhythms
of Latin-America and number one hits from Usher, Shakira, Beyonce, Enrique Iglesias, J-Lo, Prince and
Chris Brown.
The award winning production Happy as Larry by Shaun Parker & Company comes to Adelaide for a
season at the Dunstan Playhouse from 14-17 August, to receive a special Ausdance price of $36 quote the
promotional code DANCE when booking before 19 July. Adelaide audiences that appreciated Shaun
Parker’s dancing in the Meryl Tankard era are sure to enjoy his choreography.
The Australian Dance Awards - presented by Harlequin Floors with Ausdance ACT, take place in
Canberra for the first time, as part of the Centenary of Canberra, on Monday 5 August. South Australian
artists have received four nominations. Australian Dance Theatre is nominated for Outstanding Performance
by a Company for Proximity and Be Your Self. Kimball Wong is nominated for Outstanding Performance by
a Male Dancer for Proximity and Geoff Cobham is nominated for Services to Dance.
Keep your contact details up to date with Ausdance SA so that we can provide you with the latest dance
information. Recent changes to the Education Department school teacher email address system mean that
teachers may need to provide a new email address for the Ausdance SA database. The best way to do this
is by taking out an Ausdance SA financial membership and putting the details on the membership form.
Planning is under way for the Australian Youth Dance Festival (AYDF), Renmark SA 2014. Ausdance
SA is working with presenting partner Country Arts SA and strategic partners Ausdance National and
Carclew Youth Arts to bring the Australian Youth Dance Festival to regional South Australia for the first
time. Young dancers aged from 15-26 will be able to delve into the festival theme of regeneration, working
with leading dance artists from around the country. The AYDF is a non-competitive, affordable, culturally
inclusive, regional event. It will take place from 10-16 April 2014, during the April School holidays in the
picturesque Riverland town of Renmark. Contact Ausdance SA if you would like to find out more about the
AYDF Renmark SA, 2014.
Now is a great time to enrol in the second semester delivery of the Ausdance skill set for teaching
dance. Please refer to the Education pages to find out more about the skill set and to read endorsments
from participants that have recently completed this valuable professional development program.

Fresh from London’s West End Australia prepares to get
Happy as Larry.
Shaun Parker & Company will make its South Australian
debut touring Happy as Larry to Adelaide Festival
Centre from August 14-17 as part of a regional Australian
tour covering five states and 14 cities. Shaun Parker, a
former member of Meryl Tankard’s Australian Dance
Theatre, was a resident of Adelaide for seven years.
Thirteen years later, Parker looks forward to showcasing
his company of artists to South Australian audiences
including up and coming Adelaide local Lewis Rankin.
Happy as Larry - Shaun Parker & Company
This exhilarating dance hit combines an intoxicating, free-flowing mix of ballet, break-dance, parkour, roller skating,
acrobatics and highly physical contemporary dance. The cast of characters is developed from the Enneagram, a
psychological system that maps nine personality types: The Perfectionist; the Giver; the Performer; the Tragic Romantic; the Observer; the Devil’s Advocate; the Optimist; the Boss; and the Mediator – all rich inspiration for Shaun
Parker’s insightful creativity.
Happy as Larry fuses gritty realism with jaw-dropping performances to create an uplifting exploration of the human
condition. Parker has developed a reputation for choreography which combines a “fat does of funny” with a visionary
dance aesthetic. Set to an arresting electro/acoustic score by dynamic musical duo ‘Nick Wales and Bree van Reyk’
(Holly Throsby, CODA, Sarah Blasko, Sydney Dance Company), the performers bring fun and danger to the fore in this
innovative and upbeat dance hit.
Happy as Larry was originally commissioned by the Australian Major Festivals Initiative for the 2010 Sydney Festival,
Brisbane Festival New Zealand International Arts Festival and Perth International Arts Festival.

Salt is the next new work by the Restless Touring Company. The Touring Company makes
smaller scale works of dance theatre suitable for touring and does so on a fully professional
basis.
Salt will be directed by Spanish based Australian Choreographer Rob Tannion. Rob Tannion is a
visually dynamic and creative director and choreographer who works internationally across the
genres of circus, musicals, events, dance, outdoor and site-specific theatre, commercials and
film. He has been Artistic Director of Organisazion Efimera (live arts events)since 2012, which he
jointly runs with Tania Cervantes Chamorro (General Director) and Julia Sanchez (Associate
Director). Rob is familiar with Restless and ran a Masterclass in Adelaide with the Youth
Ensemble and guest artists in 2011.
Rob Tannion
Salt will be an exploration of worth, value and commodity, not just in terms of material goods, but also in self esteem and
societal values. A creative development will be held in 2013 and go into production in 2014.
In The Balance will be the first Youth Ensemble production to be directed by Restless Artistic Director Michelle Ryan.
In The Balance will be an exploration of how we are weighed, measured and judged in the modern world. Are all people
created equal or are some people more equal than others? Each member of the Youth
Ensemble will be asked to look at what is important to them, how they value themselves and
how they perceive society values them. How do you measure the immeasurable?
The Youth Ensemble will undertake a Creative Development of the work in mid 2013 and In
The Balance will go into production in 2014. Restless now takes a year to develop a new work
with the Youth Ensemble. In any one year the Youth Ensemble will usually present a major
production as well as undertake a Creative Development for the production in the following
year. Intensive and weekly workshops will be devoted to the exploration of the theme ensuring
that the material is drawn directly from the interests and passions of the Youth Ensemble members.
Michelle Ryan
Restless are working this term with a group of participants from the Spastic Centres of SA
(SCOSA). The group meets every Monday morning in the Restless Studio. The ongoing
partnership with SCOSA began in 2011 and shows the diversity of the workshop program. The
workshops are an opportunity for participants drawn from different SCOSA centres throughout
Adelaide to develop their individual creativity through movement, games and performance.
These participants with a disability build confidence, develop social interactions and learn new
dance styles in the safe and supported environment that Restless provides. The program also
creates professional development opportunities for SCOSA support staff which they will be
able to incorporate into their year long program of activities for their clients. The SCOSA
workshop team includes Emma Stokes, Jo Naumann and Jesse Rochow.
Emma Stokes, Jo Naumann & Jesse Rochow
Restless has added a new workshop group of 8 - 12 year olds with disability. This was a DanceLynx group started some time
ago by Bonnie Williams. Emma Stokes has been working with this group and they have just moved to Restless for the rest of
this year. Next year they will be incorporated into the Restless proram. The Links group meets on Saturdays in the Restless
Studio.

You will notice a small change of name over the coming months. With the change to a project based company Leigh Warren & Dancers is becoming the very succinct Leigh Warren Dance.

Leigh Warren writes about Not According to Plan
Perched like a castle way up on a hill at Guandau overlooking the city of Taipei sits Taiwan National
University of Arts (TNUA), where the revered and beloved Professor Xiao Xiong Zhang teaches contemporary
dance. Xiao Xiong originally from Cambodia danced first with the One Extra Company and then under my
direction at ADT during the late eighties finally settling in Taiwan where he danced and taught at CloudGate
before taking a permanent teaching role at TNUA some seventeen years ago.
As I approached the entrance of the university the first thing that swung into view was an avenue of cotton
trees in full bloom, their huge vermillion flowers strewn everywhere making a carpet of exotic blossoms
dotting the iridescent green grass. Glancing to my left I discovered two very large buffalo grazing contentedly
on that amazing green field. I’m here in Taiwan on a creative development stay with Xiao Xiong for a production I am creating for the OzAsia Festival in Adelaide. I took some time out from my cultural investigations to
check out the TNUA dance school and its highly talented band of students.

Leigh Warren writes about Not According to Plan (Continued)
It’s the second class of the day and the dancers scatter themselves all over the floor as dancers do anywhere
in the world but what I noticed is that there are as many men as there are women, this is unusual to find
anywhere. There are also other faculty members and post graduates in attendance working just as diligently
at their preparation for class as the students. Xiao Xiong begins his class slowly with floor-work that is a mix
of released stretching and isometric body balancing that systematically leads them to standing.
Buffalo in Taipei
Xiao Xiong is reaping the rewards of seventeen years of rigorous and dedicated teaching that has two
generations of dancers with companies around the world, one of whom I saw dance the lead as the sacrificial
maiden in Pina Bausch’s rite of spring later in the week. The Pina Bausch Company just happened to be
visiting Taipei, she was astonishing! And 30 years later so is the work! Meanwhile back at class I observe that
the students are supple, focused, show remarkable body strength and are very disciplined. Xiao Xiong is
softly spoken but very definite about what is to be achieved. His students listen intently and assimilate any
feedback and its immediate adaptation with remarkable speed. The body is never thought of in separate
parts, each and every movement engages the entire body. The sequences are fluid and assertive they have a
calligraphic feel to them bold long brush strokes right to the fingertips. The dancers lap it up exploiting every
possibility. They take charge of their own bodies and guide themselves through the exercises while a fantastic accompanist constantly shifts dynamic emphasis keeping all those ears keen in time and in tune with her.
The perspiration is now pouring off everyone, exercises are repeated and repeated until Professor Zhang
accepts improvement has been made only then does he move on. There is every kind of physique in the
room all contrasting shapes, heights, proportions and muscle tones but somehow they all push through, not
because they are bullied or coerced rather they have self-motivation that seems to be part of the ethos of
the university. There is a distinct Xiao Xiong style but its openness allows for adaptation it would seem to
other techniques. Talking of other techniques there is a martial arts class I caught sight of and I’m seriously
tempted to have a go! As the class reaches its climax spirits lift and so does the humour when some timing
comes unravelled to produce a comical effect. Everyone even the pianist joins in. Firmly in English Xiao Xiong
says, “on the down beat” with one of his charming grins. The students work very hard and when I say hard
it’s no exaggeration but their efforts are paying off big time!

Since 2011 Ausdance SA has delivered 3 skill set programs to a range of metropolitan and regional participants. The
beauty of the skill set is that it caters for all genres of dance, from the community level to advanced dance training for
schools and dance studios. The following individuals have completed the skill set.
Annisa Carstensen – The Studio Arts Centre, North Adelaide
Volume 3 July 2013
The skill set was a wonderful experience.
It was a comfort being around like minded people with the desire to dance and teach. The dance
world can be insular, clicky and a private one. It's great to see this changing through the knowledge
sharing and networking experienced in the skill set. Participating in each skill setter’s classes enabled
us to experience a plethora of dance styles and teaching approaches. The result being fellow
participant Erin Hawking joining The Studio Arts Centre to teach Contemporary.
I have a lot more confidence with safe stretching and new skills to correct students with minimum
physical contact and how to go about this appropriately. The skill set helped concrete my thoughts
about pursuing teaching as a full time career. I have since commenced a post graduate teaching
diploma at Adelaide University to teach dance in schools.
Cheryl Fischer – Dance Circles, Mid North Region
The skill set has enabled me to start a hobby business since retiring from social work. I have set up a
range of classes around the Mid North region, catering from children to adults, across a range of
dance styles. I have also gained work with the Active After Schools program delivering dance.
I am now confident teaching children from 4.5years, a new age bracket for me. The advice on establishing a dance business has given me a steady start, feeling confident about insurance, policies,
procedures and having a strong business and teaching plan.
Jeanette McCann - Freelance teacher, Adelaide
I thoroughly enjoyed the skill set; it gave me many opportunities to network, make new friends and
share my passion, teaching skills and cultural dance knowledge. I have since joined the Ausdance SA
Dancers in Schools team as a cultural dance tutor. Ausdance SA has provided me with a great deal
of support and opportunities through their Rundle Mall show performances and Choreolab.
Rebecca Payne - Freelance teacher, Adelaide
Since completing the skill set I have become an Ausdance SA Dancers in Schools tutor, Active After
Schools dance provider and have started my own business. I found the safe dance, the child safe
environments and arts curriculum components very worthwhile for my work in schools.
I am now a master trainer for a new program ‘DANCEPL3Y’ and I also introduced a new dance
program ‘GROOVE’ to skill set participants and now have it listed through Ausdance SA as a schools
workshop. Since the skill set I have enrolled at UniSA in the Masters of Teaching. The skills learnt
through the skill set such as lesson and unit planning was a great introduction for my further studies.
The skill set was a very worthwhile and positive investment for me! I would recommend this training to
anyone who wants to have their teaching skills and knowledge recognised and to pursue their career
in dance teaching!

musicians in August 2012, as part of Ade's Asialink Residency. The Ontosoroh team will welcome Ade's
long-term collaborator, set and costume designer, Justine Shih Pearson to Indonesia, on her first visit.
This immersive experience for both Australian and Indonesian artists will culminate in performances and
workshops in Solo and in Adelaide for the 2013 OzAsia Festival.
On behalf of the creative team, Ade would like to thank Arts SA, Australia-Indonesia Institute, Kelola
Foundation and the Australia Council through its Creative Partnerships with Asia initiative, for
supporting Ade and Peni's first international collaboration. Miuch gratitude also goes to Jacinta

Introducing Matthew Shilcock
- on the rise to extra-ordinary success

by Philip Channells
Matthew Shilcock is arguably one of the most interesting emerging dance artists to spring out of nowhere in South Australia.
He was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, (commonly known as ‘brittle bone disease’) and spent the first 14 years of his life
using a wheelchair. In and out of hospital for most of this period he claims to have broken more bones than Jackie Chan. With
every break, his body undergoes a very different process of healing and adapting to suit his environment. Despite this painful
and isolating background he is fast-tracking into an exciting dance career that has seen him already work with many
established artists in SA, NSW and in London through the Candoco International Artist Lab (2011).
For the past three years I’ve had the opportunity to work
with him through the Restless Dance Theatre Youth
Ensemble (SA), Accessible Arts’ Catalyst Dance
Masterclass Series (NSW) and more recently through his
JUMP mentorship program during which he is
developing his own movement vocabulary,
O s t e o g e n u i n e. One of 40 selected emerging
artists from across the country, Matthew is mid-way
through this national mentoring program which has
afforded him the opportunity to work closely with new
collaborators such as Tyson Hopprich (aka DJ TR!P),
Tim Standing (Daylight Breaks) and Sam Oster
(Silvertrace) and myself.
O s t e o g e n u i n e (Og) is a choreographic scoring system in its infancy stage of development that comprises movement
natural to his a-typical body. (Og) was inspired by Matthew’s relationship with Sydney-based artist Dean Walsh, who dedicated
his 2-year fellowship through the Australia Council for the Arts to the research of Prime : Orderly. Matthew said, “My fascination
with Prime: Orderly led me to want to work with Dean closer and O s t e o g e n u i n e was born from that.”
(Og) is movement exploration through four primary scores:
Structure – creation of sustainable and balanced forms in the body
Impact – action / reaction to external stimuli
Adaption – conscious changes made in relation to environmental influences
Adaptation – natural changes, in response to environment & circumstance.
With the support of the JUMP mentoring program Matthew is on a forward trajectory to success. I’m sure his investigation of
his unique physical background and the new relationships he’s forming through O s t e o g e n u i n e will equip him with the
necessary skills that will bare weight to his career and determine the difference between success and mediocrity.
“JUMP has given me the chance to work closely with my mentor to learn things I know nothing about. Without JUMP, there
would be no way I could begin O s t e o g e n u i n e ”, said Matthew.
It isn’t any wonder that his phoenix tattooed across his chest marks an extraordinary life-affirming turning point from which he
has risen himself. Matthew is an extra-ordinary dancer to watch out for.
